Rotorua Thermal Mud
| RotoruaNZ.com
The Rotorua Farmers Market showcases the freshest locally sourced products in the region. This vibrant little market provides growers and local producers the opportunity to sell directly to you. It’s held in the middle of the city every Sunday (weather permitting).
NZ may be famous for Merino wool, but that’s not all we’ve got. Surico Alpaca is Australasia’s largest producer of Suri fibre, all sourced from their herd of 150 friendly alpacas. Visit the farm to purchase their products and take the tour and a selfie while you’re there.
Head to Mamaku Blue for a delicious experience. Blueberry season starts January, so summer is the perfect time to book a tour of their berry orchard & winery. Visit the shop afterwards to sample locally made, award-winning wine, liquor, chutneys and jams.
Volcanic Hills Winery sits at the top of the Skyline Gondola where you can savour their selection of locally produced wines. Tours of the winery at the bottom of the hill can be arranged by appointment or join their Wine Lovers Guild for exclusive offers.
Clean with mud? It sounds strange but Rotorua’s thermal mud is an amazing cleanser, treating oily skin with its natural absorbing qualities. Pure Source produces a range of mud products sold throughout the region. Add this mud to your daily skin routine.

Itineraries A WHILE TO DISCOVER ROTORUA Navigate Nature Enjoy a scenic sea-kayak tour with Waimarino. You’ll love cruising passed the native bush on the shores of Lake Rotoiti. View classic kiwi holiday homes dotted amongst the cliffs and explore the quiet lake’s edge, abundant with birdlife, before parting the bush to enter a glow worm cave.. Not to mention the natural thermal pools where you stop for a soak! After the tour head to the infamous Whakarewarewa Forest (Redwoods) to get a bird’s eye view from the Redwoods Treewalk. This walkway is over half a kilometre long and traverses through the majestic 110 year old redwoods. The bridge sections gradually incline to a stunning 12m at its peak.
A Volcano Experience This unique experience lands you on the historic Mt Tarawera volcano with Volcanic Air. Take in the wonders from above before landing for a guided crater walk. The flight allows you to take in the stunning scenery of Lakes Okareka, Tarawera and Rotomahana, as well as White Island and Mt Ruapehu on clear days. Once you land you will be guided around the crater of Mt Tarawera by Kaitiaki Adventures before being driven back to Rotorua. For a fully blown volcano experience consider also catching a flight out to White Island where you can land and walk on an active marine volcano.

A DAY TO EXPLORE Dansey Scenic Reserve Rotorua has one of the most in-tact eco-systems in New Zealand. A cobalt deficiency in the soil of the Dansey Scenic Reserve means deer and pigs avoid the area allowing the forest to flourish. An element of luck also meant that in 1860 a railway was built to bring tourists to Rotorua’s famed pink and white terraces, so this section of forest was untouched to serve as a magnificent gateway. Today you can experience that journey yourself in your very own self-drive cruiser with Rail Cruising, or to get above the forest floor visit Rotorua Canopy Tours who operate a zipline and swing bridge eco-adventure up amongst these ancient trees.
Pure Adventure Adventure Playground got their name right. Their awesome trails for quad biking, horse riding or 4WD buggy tours culminate with gigantic views of Lake Rotorua. Stop at their shooting range on the way back to test your skills. Next stop is the Kaituna River. It’s world famous for its rapids and being home to the largest commercial rafted waterfall. Would you consider taking that plunge in a kayak?! Kaituna Kayaks offer tandem kayak trips down this legendary stretch of water. Ride shotgun over the 7m waterfall for an extreme rush – or if you want to learn some kayaking skills they also offer lessons.

Welcome to the North Island Lakes District. The 18 sparkling lakes and three major rivers dotted around Rotorua makes the area a water lover’s paradise. Take it all in while relaxing in a lake edge thermal hot pool or explore the lakes at length, discovering glow worm caves and fresh water springs by kayak or stand-up paddle board. Here are a few suggestions on some of the best lakes to visit for a dip:
Lake Tikitapu
Also known as the Blue Lake, Tikitapu is one of the most popular places in Rotorua for water sports. Whether you are keen to get out on top of the water, or want to swim or bathe amongst it, Tikitapu is the perfect choice. With crystal clear water and family friendly places for a picnic, catch some rays at the Blue Lake this year.
Lake Rotoiti
Lake Rotoiti offers plenty of safe places to take the kids for some time in the water. Dropping off gradually in depth, the less confident swimmers will have a blast

Rotorua’s Lakes playing in the shallows. Between the lake and the playground at the end of Tamatea St, the young ones will be entertained for hours
Lake Okareka A little less frequented than some other lakes in the region, Lake Okareka is another great place to get in the water. Renowned for its natural beauty, this lake is beloved by locals. Head to Boyes Beach where you and friends or family can set up for the day. With barbeques and picnic tables, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy the summer and early autumn sun.
Lake Tarawera Lake Tarawera offers it all; history, natural beauty and a perfect spot for swimming and water sports. It’s even one of the best places in the country for astro-photography. Catch the water taxi out to Hot Water Beach - a special lakeside location where spring water trickles down a small stream and into the lake. At this extraordinary hot spot you can create a hot sandy hole to soak in or build a rock wall to create a private steamy spa. Explore | 13
