Iconic Rotorua CONSIDER THESE EXPERIENCES Walk on Two Volcanoes Experience the journey of a lifetime with Volcanic Air. Fly by helicopter over the Rotorua Lakes District to land on two of New Zealand’s most iconic volcanoes, White Island and Mount Tarawera. White Island is a permanently active volcano. Walk around the crater floor on a lunar-like landscape. It’s a once in a lifetime experience. In contrast, landing on the summit of Mount Tarawera is awe-inspiring. The site of the eruption that destroyed the Pink and White Terraces and the panoramic views are breathtaking.

Conquer The World’s Highest River Rats Rafting and Kayaking offers something for everyone. From a gentle grade 2 scenic raft trip suitable for kids as young as five, through to full on grade 5 action where rafters will need to conquer the mighty Tutea Falls, the world’s highest commercially rafted waterfall. They also have plenty of kayaking options available, like freedom hire or guided tours on the local lakes – including an incredible paddle past cascading native forest out to a secluded beach to enjoy a hot pool only accessible by water.

A Taste of Adventure Whether you are after an adrenaline-filled quad bike ride, a stunning scenic horse trek or some fun with a gun clay bird shooting, Rotorua’s Adventure Playground is the place to be. For a more leisurely pace, you can be driven up the mountain on one of the 4WD buggies by an experienced and knowledgeable guide. All activities take in the spectacular scenery overlooking Lake Rotorua and the beautiful native bush set on Mount Ngongotaha. Go higher, see further and do more.

RailCruising Not many people are lucky enough to have ridden in the cab of a locomotive, but it’s this unique experience that inspired RailCruising. It’s the freedom of being in your own RailCruiser with nothing ahead but the unobstructed curve of the rail stretching before you and the clickety-clack of the rail underneath. The RailCruiser V3000 is the world’s first fully automated, four seat, self-drive hybrid rail vehicle. It even boasts comfortable seats, clear drop-down waterproof sides and comes with onboard heating.

Interact with deer, pigs, thar and wallabies, a variety of animals living wild around NZ. Get up close to friendly farm animals and native alpine parrots (Kea). Even come face to face with the pride of majestic African lions – closer than you will believe!

Rainbow Springs’ Kiwi Encounter is the largest and most successful hatching facility in NZ and has hatched over 1650 eggs since opening in 2004. This is the perfect place to see and learn about the cute national icon and a variety of other native creatures.

Horse lovers will love Rotorua’s horse trekking facilities. Horse Trekking Lake Okareka offers farm tours between Lake Okareka, the Blue and Green Lakes and Lake Tarawera, while treks with Farmhouse Rotorua provide panoramic views of Lake Rotorua and Mt Ngongotaha.

Over 40% of NZ’s native creatures are extinct due to predators (rats, possums, stoats, ferrets and cats to name a few). Canopy Tours are righting the wrong and have removed thousands from the forest. Learn their story on a tour and meet some of the cheeky wild native birds.

The award-winning farm show includes 19 sheep breeds, working dogs, sheep shearing and cow milking demonstrations. You can feed baby lambs and take part in a sheep auction before joining a farm tour with the chance to pat a variety of animals.

 Polynesian Spa

Geothermal Rotorua’s geothermal water, known as ‘Waiariki’ (‘water of the gods’), along with the mineral-enriched muds, traditional massage and indigenous herbs all play a special role in Rotorua’s spa culture. Whether you’re after a simple soak in a natural forest-lined thermal stream or a full day at a luxuriously-appointed spa complex, visitors will leave Rotorua feeling invigorated, refreshed and revitalised. Here are a few suggestions for geothermal bathing in the region:

Waikite Valley

Experience the ‘Living Waters’ of the Te Manaroa Spring - the largest single source of boiling water in New Zealand. This pure spring water cascades into a main settlers pool (35-38°C) and adjoining toddlers’ beach area as well as the sit ‘n’ soak pool (38-40°C) and the luxuriously tranquil garden and pergola pools.

Polynesian Spa

One of New Zealand’s oldest international spas and voted amongst the top 10 day spas on the planet. This iconic complex offers hot mineral bathing in a choice of four different bathing areas. Whether you’re after the 10 | RotoruaNZ.com

Bathing Bliss luxury of a private pool, the vistas of the indulgent lake spa or a large pool for some family fun, you will find it at Polynesian Spa.

Blue Baths

‘Mixed bathing in liquid light,’ the promise of pleasure used to entice visitors to Rotorua’s Blue Baths in the 1930’s, the first venue to daringly offer mixed bathing in New Zealand. The warm waters of the original Juvenile Pool is usually around 30°C whilst the two hot soak pools vary between 37°C and 42°C.

QE Health

Water from the Rachel Spring is alkaline and sulphurous, renowned for its softening effects on the skin and its relaxing properties. Enjoy the benefits for yourself at QE Health on the shores of Lake Rotorua.

The Squeeze

Catch a jetboat with NZ Riverjet to a true hidden gem. Disembark into knee-deep warm water to start ‘the squeeze’. Manoeuvre through narrow crevasses, climb boulders, and emerge in native bush. Soak up the atmosphere while relaxing in the thermal waters of a naturally heated bathing pool and waterfall. Geothermal Bathing Bliss | 11

Explore

Welcome to the North Island Lakes District. The 18 sparkling lakes and three major rivers dotted around Rotorua makes the area a water lover’s paradise. Take it all in while relaxing in a lake edge thermal hot pool or explore the lakes at length discovering glow worm caves and fresh water springs by kayak or stand-up paddle board. Here are a few suggestions of how to enjoy our lakes and rivers over the cooler months:

Lake Rotoiti – The Little Lake Lake Rotoiti translates as ‘the little lake’ but is ironically the third largest of Rotorua’s 18 lakes. Home to the Manupirua Hot Springs, which are accessible only by boat or kayak, this secluded little spot is worth the journey along the Southern Bays.

Lake Tikitapu – The Blue Lake Tikitapu (named after a sacred ornament believed to be lost in the lake) is a popular spot for water sports during the warmer months. There’s also a great short 12 | RotoruaNZ.com

Rotorua’s Lakes walk (5.5km) through native bush around the lake to some more secluded beaches. With information panels and labels along the way, this is a great way to learn about the flora, fauna and history of this area.

Lake Tarawera – Burnt Spear Lake Tarawera was named by a visiting hunter who returned to find his spears had been burned. Walk the 5-hour trail or take the water taxi to Lake Tarawera’s Hot Water Beach - a special lakeside hot spot where spring water trickles down a small stream and into the lake.

Lake Okataina – The Lake of Laughter One of the only lakes in the region that is completely encircled by native forest, Lake Okataina (or The Lake of Laughter) is surrounded many short scenic tracks. With impressive native forest, sandy beaches and cascading waterfalls to be found, this is a great area for tramping. Keep an eye out for the cute Tammar Wallabies, a pest in New Zealand that was introduced from Australia in the 19th century. Explore | 13
