A PARADISE OF HIDDEN GEMS WAITING TO BE DISCOVERED

TONGARIRO NATIONAL PARK The Tongariro National Park is awe-inspiring with its spectacular scenery and unique status as one of the few dual World Heritage National Parks in the world. The three volcanoes – Tongariro (1,968m), Ngauruhoe (2,290m) and Ruapehu (2,797m) form the southernmost tip of the Taupö volcanic zone. Get up close to the active volcanoes on the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing hike, or enjoy one of the many shorter walks in the lowlands. The beech forest is teeming with bird life and rare native alpine plants can be found higher up. Within the park lies Whakapapa Ski Area, New Zealand’s largest ski area, where you can ski, snowboard or take a scenic chairlift ride to the country’s highest café at Knoll Ridge.

Mangakino, a small township nestled beside Lake Maraetai, is a haven for lovers of watersports such as boating, fishing, wakeboarding and water skiing. The surrounding forests provide opportunities for hiking and camping, and the Waikato River Trail is nearby for mountain biking adventures. For a peaceful getaway in an idyllic location, Mangakino is the ideal undiscovered gem.

MA-ORI ROCK CARVINGS The Mine Bay Mäori Rock Carvings on Lake Taupö form one of the most extraordinary contemporary artworks New Zealand has ever seen. Towering 14-metres above the deep water of Lake Taupö, the carvings have become one of the North Island’s biggest tourist attractions. When traditional marae-taught carver Matahi Whakataka Brightwell paddled past the rock alcove at Mine Bay in 1976, he had a vision of a tattooed face. His grandmother, Te Huatahi Susie Gilbert, had asked the young carver to create a likeness of her ancestor Ngätoroirangi to create a permanent connection for her family to the land. Sculpted over the course of four years and completed in 1980, Matahi led a team of four artists – Jono Randell, Te Miringa Hohaia, Dave Hegglun and Steve Myhre, to create the spectacular carved rock face we see today. Scenic Cruise

Kayak to the Carvings

The carvings are accessible by scenic cruise, float plane or sailing trip from Taupö’s Boat Harbour for under $50, or by kayak. The team at the Taupö i-SITE take bookings and are open seven days a week.

Bring a picnic and relax by the river, or get up close to the falls and feel the spray on your face from a jet boat or river cruise boat. For the adventurous, there are walking and mountain biking trails on either side of the river which vary in length and level.
