Taupō town is home to boutique shops, vibrant artworks and a range of eateries and fine dining restaurants. Further out, there are natural hot springs, and adrenaline activities including skydiving, bungy jumping and jet boating.

Mangakino A tranquil town on the edge of Lake Maraetai, Mangakino is a holiday spot where you can get back to life’s simple pleasures. Get up late and enjoy breakfast as you watch rowing teams practice on the mirror-like lake or the morning fog lifting from the hills. Spend the day swimming, boating or fishing at one of the four local reservoir lakes, exploring the beautiful Pureora Forest Park on foot or mountain bike, hiking or biking the Waikato River Trails, or playing golf at the local course.

Turangi Gateway to the stunning Tongariro National Park, Turangi is basecamp for world-class fly fishing for trout on the Tongariro River. There are superb grade two to four white water rapids for rafting, the Tongariro River Trail for biking and walking, and charming cafés, with great coffee and freshly stocked cabinets. Kinloch The picturesque village of Kinloch is an in-the-know hideaway perfect for a rejuvenating escape. Stunning nature trails, beaches and a charming village make Kinloch the perfect place for a family getaway or couples’ retreat. Tongariro National Park A diverse, awe-inspiring landscape born from volcanic eruptions and carved by ice age glaciers, Tongariro National Park is a place of natural wonders and spiritual significance. In 1894, it became New Zealand’s first national park, thanks to the generosity of the Ngāti Tūwharetoa people. Tongariro National Park holds dual UNESCO World Heritage Site status that recognises its Māori cultural and spiritual significance as well as its outstanding natural landscape. It is home to the 6

19.4 kilometre Tongariro Alpine Crossing – considered New Zealand’s best one-day hike – as well as many stunning short walks, day, overnight and multi-day hikes, and excellent skiing, snowboarding and sledding on Mt Ruapehu in winter and spring. Some of the clearest night skies in the world can be found in the Park. With rugged mountain peaks in the foreground, it’s a wondrous place to take in the glittering starscape. Regular shuttles and guides to the Park are available from Taupō town and Turangi.

attention to the changeable and sometimes severe alpine weather – always check conditions before setting out. The start of the trail is just over 1-hour’s drive from Taupō town, and 30-minutes from Turangi. Shuttles and guided tours depart daily and you can book your place through the Taupō or Turangi i-SITE. The Park is considered sacred to local iwi and as such ask you respect the sanctity of the maunga tapu (sacred mountains) by not touching waterways or climbing the peaks.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing has earned its reputation as New Zealand’s most impressive one-day hike. Trek across a cratered volcanic moonscape of dramatic contrasts – delicate alpine meadows, tussockland, turquoise mineral lakes, and native forest home to many birds and New Zealand’s rare native bats. Beginning at 1120m above sea level, the challenging 7-9 hour hike (19.4km one way) through the UNESCO dual World Heritage Park requires a good level of fitness and preparation, as well as close

Discover snow

Mt Ruapehu has the longest ski season in Australasia on New Zealand’s two largest ski resorts, Whakapapa and Tūroa. At Whakapapa, beginners can find their feet on the gentle slopes of Happy Valley, or for more experienced skiers there are more than 65 trails across 550ha of lift-accessed terrain to be discovered. Open year-round, sightseers can travel on the impressive Sky Waka gondola high above Whakapapa Ski Area, through the epic landscape of the UNESCO dual World Heritage Tongariro National Park to the

Knoll Ridge Chalet. Perched on the edge of Mt Ruapehu, the views are nothing short of spectacular. Tūroa Ski Area, just 2 hours from Taupō town and 1.5 hours from Turangi, offers the freedom of wide-open bowls, long linking runs, and back-country access, as well as a terrain park. Tukino Ski Field, the North Island’s only club field, offers alpine adventures like cat skiing and snow-shoeing in an uncrowded environment. Ski gear, day passes and shuttles can be arranged in Taupō town and Turangi. 9

Tongariro River Flowing north from the snow-clad peaks of Tongariro National Park, through the friendly town of Turangi, the pristine Tongariro River is the world’s best place to catch trout. Anglers come from around the globe to fly fish its pools and rapids, with threequarters of a million rainbow and brown trout spawning every year. The river’s twisting path through the varied landscape also makes it ideal for white water rafting. There are guided trips for all ages and levels of adventurousness — from 10

families looking for gentle excitement and a leisurely paddle through lush gorges, to adrenaline junkies looking for a thrilling, rapid-shooting ride. For those who prefer to stay dry, the scenic Tongariro River Trail is a family-friendly track for walking and mountain biking, with stunning views of the river, Mt Pihanga and Lake Taupō. The Tongariro River rises in Tongariro National Park, flows down through Turangi and enters Lake Taupō. You can access the Tongariro River Trail and many fishing locations from Turangi.

Whio on Tongariro River

Whio (native blue duck) The endangered whio (native blue duck) once thrived throughout New Zealand, but today this striking rare bird (as seen on our $10 note) is found only on the most pristine backcountry rivers of New Zealand, including the upper reaches of the Tongariro River. The award-winning conservation initiative Blue Duck Project has helped double the existing population of whio in the upper Tongariro. You can see this important work in person on a Tongariro River Rafting eco-experience, where you’ll float through 12

rapids alongside the shy, slateblue birds, check predator trapping lines and contribute to the whio’s protection with part of your trip price going directly to the conservation project. From November to March, the whio creche at the Tongariro National Trout Centre is your best chance to see this unique bird up close. Young whio, bred in captivity, go through a blue duck ‘boot camp’ in the centre’s fastflowing, tussock-lined streams and rapids providing the perfect learning environment for survival in the wild.

Junior anglers will enjoy visiting the educational Tongariro National Trout Centre and hatchery, where they can try their luck in the fishing pond. There are many experienced local guides and boat charter captains in the area, who are happy to share their favourite fishing spots, techniques and flies with you.

For decades, anglers have come from around the world to the Taupō region to enjoy the whizz-and-plop of a fishing line casting into a rushing river or lapping lake and the thrill of hauling in a shining wild trout. Since the introduction of brown and rainbow trout to Taupō’s waterways in the late 1800s, the region has become renowned as a world-class angler’s paradise, with Turangi as the gold standard for trout fishing in New Zealand. There’s great fishing in all seasons, from pristine backcountry angling on the region’s many

Taupō moana Love the inland sea At the heart of New Zealand’s central volcanic plateau sits the largest freshwater lake in Australasia, Lake Taupō. Moving between aquamarine blue and jade green, Lake Taupō is crystal-clear to a depth of 13 metres. It is home to one of the best wild trout fisheries in the world, more than 30 species of water bird, native fish and kōura (crayfish). The lake is a caldera created by the gigantic Oruanui eruption 27,000 years ago. Lake Taupō is a hub for many activities and attractions, including fishing charters, 14

scenic boat cruises, kayaking, waterskiing, paddle boarding and the extraordinary Māori rock carvings at Mine Bay. The Great Lake Trails — part of Nga Haerenga The New Zealand Cycle Trail — run around the western shoreline. The lake plunges to 186m at its deepest point. In the mornings, it can be shrouded in mist, which usually rolls back by midday to reveal the sparkling waters beneath. It’s known by local tangata whenua (people of the land) as Taupō moana, the ‘inland sea of New Zealand’.

Māori culture experiences Whether it’s foraging for flora and fauna in the wild with Kai Waho, relaxing with a traditional Māori massage, taking part in an interactive experience of traditional Māori songs and kapa haka (performance) with the Haka Shop, or discovering the giant Mine Bay Māori rock carving that tells the story of the great Māori high priest Ngātoroirangi, you will leave Taupō having connected with local people and local stories. Discover more about the heritage of local iwi Ngāti Tūwharetoa at the Taupō Museum, as well as viewing

a mighty 15 metre waka crafted from a single totara log. The annual Ngāti Tūwharetoa Taiopenga festival held each September includes kapa haka performances, craft stalls and poi demonstrations. You can also visit some of New Zealand’s most historic and significant Maori pā sites (fortified villages) where you can learn about the history of the famous Ka Mate Haka at Opotaka Historic Reserve or discover the site where the last major engagement of the New Zealand Wars was fought in 1869 at Te Porere Redoubt. 15

Waikato River New Zealand's longest river, the mighty Waikato, drains Lake Taupō, blasts through a narrow rock chasm to create the Huka Falls, then winds more peacefully northwards. From calm and scenic to turbulent waters, travelling the Waikato (meaning ‘flowing water’) by river float, scenic boat cruise, or jet boat is one of the best ways to experience its power and beauty. At Otumuheke, just north of Taupō town centre, you will find a natural thermal stream where you can soak under a waterfall on the edge of the Waikato River.

16

Discover almost 100km of riverside walking and biking trails on the scenic Huka Trails and Waikato River Trails. Journey through expansive landscapes of native bush and exotic forest, witness historic landmarks and pass over incredible swing bridges. At the Aratiatia Dam, just north of Taupō town, gates are opened several times a day to thunderously flood the steep canyon of the Aratiatia Rapids. This is where the famous ‘dwarf barrel’ scene from the movie ‘The Hobbit — The Desolation of Smaug’ was filmed.

Huka Falls

The most-visited natural attraction in New Zealand, Huka Falls roars with the sound of nearly a quarter of a million litres of water per second erupting from a natural gorge and thundering 11 metres into the Waikato River below. You can take a jet boat trip or river cruise up the Waikato River to the crystal-blue pool at the base of the falls until you feel the spray on your face. Pack a picnic and explore the trails in the area on foot or by mountain bike. Trails range from five minutes to two hours in length.

18

Local Māori call the falls Hukanui, meaning ‘big foam’ or ‘great body of spray’. The flow rate of water would fill an Olympic swimming pool in just 11 seconds. It’s caused by the Waikato River being forced to narrow as it passes through a hard volcanic canyon. This increases flow, causing water to burst out with great force as the gorge ends. The falls are just five minutes’ drive by car or bus from Taupō town centre, along a beautiful forest-clad road that passes the world-famous luxury resort, Huka Lodge.

There are few better ways to experience Taupō’s energy than soaking in its warm healing waters at one of the regions many mineral-rich thermal hot pools. Our local bike shop staff can advise you on the best experience and gear.

Great Lake Trails The Great Lake Trails – part of Nga Haerenga The New Zealand Cycle Trail network and one of New Zealand’s Great Rides – are an allseason journey of volcanic discovery skirting the rim of New Zealand’s largest lake. Weaving through lush native forest and wetlands, past waterfalls and beaches and over deep gorges, the trails lead you to elevated lookouts with spectacular views of snowy volcanic peaks and down to secluded swimming beaches and the crystal-clear waters of Lake Taupō.

The Great Lake Trails boast exhilarating downhills, fun switchbacks and cambered berms to deliver true singletrack heaven for intermediate level riders. The different sections can be ridden in one epic day or as a multi-day mountain biking adventure. The beautiful lakeside village of Kinloch acts as a riding hub to the nearby trails offering holiday home, luxury lodge and B&B accommodation. Off trails, enjoy the beautiful swimming beach, marina and quality food, craft beer and coffee on offer at the local café and store. 25
