Lake Taupō

At the heart of New Zealand’s central volcanic plateau sits the largest freshwater lake in Australasia, Lake Taupō. Moving between aquamarine blue and jade green, Lake Taupō is crystal-clear to a depth of 13 metres. It is home to one of the best wild trout fisheries in the world, more than 30 species of water bird, native fish and kōura (crayfish). The lake is a caldera created by the gigantic Oruanui eruption 27,000 years ago. Lake Taupō is the hub for many activities and attractions, including fishing

charters, scenic boat cruises, waterskiing, kayaking, paddleboarding and the extraordinary Māori rock carvings at Mine Bay. The Great Lake Trail which is part of Nga Haerenga — The New Zealand Cycle Trail runs around the shoreline. The lake plunges to 186m at its deepest point. In the mornings, it can be shrouded in mist, which usually rolls back by midday to reveal the sparkling waters beneath. It’s known by local tangata whenua (people of the land) as Taupō Moana, the ‘inland sea of New Zealand’. 6

Tongariro National Park A diverse, awe-inspiring landscape born from volcanic eruptions and carved by ice age glaciers, Tongariro National Park is a place of natural wonders and spiritual significance. In 1894, it became New Zealand’s first national park, thanks to the generosity of the Ngāti Tūwharetoa people. Tongariro National Park holds dual UNESCO World Heritage Site status that recognises its Māori cultural and spiritual significance as well as its outstanding natural landscape. Enjoy stunning 7

walks and hikes, as well as excellent skiing, snowboarding and sledding on Mt Ruapehu in winter. Within the Park is the 19.4km Tongariro Alpine Crossing — considered New Zealand’s best one day hike. The alpine trek will take you through alpine meadows, tussockland and a cratered volcanic moonscape dotted with turquoise mineral lakes. Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu are officially active, though can be safely explored at times of low alert. Shuttles and guides available from Taupō and Turangi.

Discover snow At Mt Ruapehu, you can enjoy the longest ski season in Australasia on New Zealand’s largest ski fields — Whakapapa and Tūroa. There’s brilliant skiing, snowboarding, sledding and snow play for all abilities. Whakapapa has over 65 trails to discover, ranging from beginner to advanced. Beginners can find their feet on New Zealand’s best learner slopes at Happy Valley. The award-winning Knoll Ridge Café, accessible to sightseers via a new gondola opening in June 2019, is the perfect place for a hot drink while enjoying

breathtaking views over The Pinnacles and beyond. Tūroa is a favourite with those who enjoy the freedom of its wide open bowls, long linking runs and access to backcountry areas. Snowboarders will love the terrain park. A fantastic range of aprèsski options are on offer too. From on-mountain cafés to mulled wine in front of a lodge fire, a hot soak in a geothermal pool, or dining under the fairy lights of Taupō town. Daily mountain transport and gear hire is available from Turangi and Taupō town.

Home of adrenaline New Zealanders are renowned for going to extreme lengths to get an adrenaline buzz (this is the country where commercial bungy-jumping was invented, after all). Taupō is ground zero for every activity that a thrillseeker could wish to try. Set off on alpine adventures in majestic volcanic mountains, discover mighty rivers and the largest freshwater lake in Australasia (plus more than 20 other lakes), thundering waterfalls and ancient native bush, and all the adventure that comes with such a diverse and epic range of landscapes.

Hurl yourself from a plane to get the most boast-worthy views of the entire region — from the mountains across the lake and out to the coast. Leap from the highest water-touch bungy platform in the country and take a dip in the clear waters of the Waikato River. You can hurtle down snowy slopes on skis, snowboards or sleds, zoom across rivers in a jet boat, bounce through foamy rapids on a white water raft, race V8 supercars or roar along bush tracks in a quad bike. If you’ve got the nerve, Taupō has the test for it.

Lying on a volcanic plateau above an underground magma lake that stretches from Tongariro National Park in the south to Whakaari (White Island) in the Bay of Plenty, the Taupō Volcanic Zone is alive with geothermal activity. Immerse yourself in steam clouds and the mesmerising sound of bubbling mud pools as you meander through otherworldly walkways at Orakei Korako, Craters of the Moon or Tokaanu Thermal Walk. 40 minutes north of Taupō, you will find Wai-o-tapu — a wonderland of geothermal activity. Orakei

Korako, just 30 minutes drive north of Taupō town, is the closest you’ll come to seeing the legendary lost Pink and White Terraces, with its distinct candy-coloured hillside alive with active geysers, steaming terraces, gemstone coloured pools and New Zealand’s only geothermal cave. There are few better ways to experience Taupō’s energy than soaking in its warm healing geothermal waters at one of the many mineral-rich thermal baths around the region. For an interactive experience visit the Volcanic Activity Centre.

Huka Falls The most-visited natural attraction in New Zealand, Huka Falls roars with the sound of nearly a quarter of a million litres of water per second erupting from a natural gorge and thundering 11m into the Waikato River below. You can take a jet boat trip or river cruise up the Waikato River to the crystal-blue pool at the base of the falls until you feel the spray on your face. Pack a picnic and explore the trails in the area on foot or by mountain bike. Trails range from five minutes to two hours in length. 13

Local Māori call the falls Hukanui, meaning ‘big foam’ or ‘great body of spray’. The flow rate of water would fill an Olympic swimming pool in just 11 seconds. It’s caused by the Waikato River being forced to narrow as it passes through a hard volcanic canyon. This increases flow, causing water to burst out with great force as the gorge ends. The falls are just five minutes’ drive by car or bus from Taupō town centre, along a beautiful forest-clad road that passes the world-famous luxury resort, Huka Lodge.

local people and local stories. Discover more about the heritage of Ngāti Tūwharetoa at the Taupō Museum, as well as viewing a mighty 15m waka crafted from a single totara log. Tongariro River

Flowing north from the snow-clad peaks of Tongariro National Park, the pristine Tongariro River is one of the world’s best places to catch trout. Anglers come from around the globe to fly fish its pools and rapids, with threequarters of a million rainbow and brown trout spawning every year. The river’s twisting path through the varied landscape also makes it ideal for white water rafting. There are guided trips for all ages and levels of adventurousness — from families looking for gentle

excitement and a leisurely paddle through lush gorges, to adrenaline junkies after a thrilling, rapid-shooting ride. For those who prefer to stay dry, the scenic Tongariro River Trail is a family-friendly track for walking and mountainbiking, with stunning views of the river, Mt Pihanga and Lake Taupō. Nature-lovers can stop at the Tongariro National Trout Centre to get an up-close look at hatchlings and the iridescent rainbow trout at the underwater viewing station, or see the beautiful endangered native whio (blue duck). 18

Golfing paradise Set amongst beautiful lakeside locations and surrounded by rolling hills, native birds and mountain backdrops, golfing in Taupō is not only world-class but has the added bonus of breathtaking scenery. With its nine highly regarded golf courses — two of which are consistently ranked in the top 100 courses outside the US and top 12 courses in New Zealand, Taupō is considered a paradise for golfers. From the rugged tussockcovered hills and lakeside location at the award-winning Jack Nicklaus-designed

Kinloch Club course with its onsite luxury lodge and exquisite food and wine, to the lush countryside of the predator-free sanctuary of Wairakei, where you might even spot a dashing pheasant or wandering fallow deer. The smaller courses around the region all have unique charm, and if you don’t have time for a day on the fairways, but love to practice your swing, the Lake Taupō Hole in One Challenge could win you up to $10,000 if you manage to hit your ball into a hole on the floating pontoon on the lake.

World-class fishing For decades, anglers have come from around the world to Taupō to enjoy the whizz-andplop of a fishing line casting into a rushing river or lapping lake and the thrill of hauling in a fat, shining wild trout. Since the introduction of brown and rainbow trout to Lake Taupō’s vast, crystal-clear waters from the late 1800s, the region has become renowned as an angler’s paradise with Turangi as the gold standard for trout fishing in New Zealand. There’s great fishing in all seasons, from pristine backcountry fishing on the

region’s many tributary rivers in winter, to action along the river mouths and beaches in spring, excellent dry fly fishing through summer, and autumn migration runs up the lake tributaries, as well as lake trolling year-round. Junior anglers will enjoy visiting the educational Tongariro National Trout Centre and hatchery at Turangi, where they can try their luck in the fishing pond. There’s a wealth of experienced guides and charter captains in the area, who are happy to share their favourite spots, flies and techniques with you.

A spectacular way to experience the Park is the 85km Timber Trail, open to both walkers and cyclists. The trail weaves through and even above the forest canopy via suspension bridges. The Waihora Lagoon walk leads to a wetland that creates 21

stunning reflections of the swamp forest surrounding it. The river run mountains of the Kaimanawa Forest Park have long called to adventurers and hunters for its remote and massive expanse of native forest, shrubland and tussock grasslands. Love Mighty rivers Love Hobbitses Love Bungy Love Therm Lo W Waikato River The longest river in New Zealand, the mighty Waikato, drains Lake Taupō, blasts through a narrow rock chasm to create the Huka Falls, then winds more peacefully northwards. From calm and scenic to turbulent waters, travelling the Waikato (meaning ‘flowing water’) by river float, scenic boat cruise, or jet boat is one of the best ways to experience its power and beauty. At Otumuheke, just north of Taupō town, there’s a hidden bathing spot where a thermally heated stream joins the river. Ideal for a relaxing soak. 25

Almost 100km of walking and biking trails wind alongside the river, passing through native bush, exotic forest, historic landmarks, farmland, reserves, significant wetlands, and expansive lake and river landscapes. At the Aratiatia Dam, 15 minutes from Taupō town, gates are opened several times a day to thunderously flood the steep canyon of the Aratiatia Rapids. This is where the famous ‘dwarf barrel’ scene from the movie ‘The Hobbit — The Desolation of Smaug’ was filmed.

Eat, drink and shop The region’s pure waters and lush farmland produce ingredients of export quality, including specialities like mānuka honey, grass-fed Taupō beef, wild venison, and locally brewed craft beer. For trout enthusiasts, the only way to enjoy its unique flavour is to catch it yourself. Many local restaurants will be happy to prepare your catch for you — just call and book in advance. Taupō’s café culture is up with the big cities, and the chefs at the region’s luxury lodges prepare food that’s among the best in the world.

Taupō’s lakefront, pedestrianfriendly town offers a stressfree shopping experience infused with small town charm and a distinct boutique feel. There are fashion boutiques, homeware stores and art and craft galleries full of beautiful items. As you might expect in an adventure capital, there are outdoor stores to supply every sporting need, as well as maps, licenses and guides.
