The characteristic smell in the air is the scent of sulphur due to the many geothermal hotspots. There are 35 marae (meeting grounds) in Rotorua. Renowned as “Nature’s Spa of the South Pacific” due to the healing hot springs and thermal mud. Rotorua boasts 18 lakes (15 of them are fishable) and 3 major rivers.

Rotorua in Māori means ‘second lake’, its history dating back to 1350AD when Polynesian voyagers originally settled in the area by the canoe ‘Te Arawa’. The dynamic Māori culture lives on through the descendants of the Te Arawa tribe – sharing their culture, history, art, music and language in a variety of enriching encounters. Enjoy a hangi (traditional Māori food cooked underground), cultural performance, traditional massage or visit a Māori carver or weaver. You are sure to experience the best of Māori hospitality.

is no ere th tomorrow Whizz down a hydroslide, roll downhill in a giant bubble, hunt, fish, jet boat, zipline or head off road – Rotorua will challenge you and offer you thrills in ways you never thought possible. Spending time on the water here is an obvious must-do, especially with 18 crystal clear lakes dotted around the region. You’ll appreciate their beauty even more when you realise that many of them are extinct volcanoes. Some are so remote and surrounded by protective forest, the only way you can see them is from the air. There are so many ways you can make the most of these lakes – from kayaking, sailing, paddle boarding, white water rafting, jet boating and more. Check out the surrounding rapids and waterfalls too. Only on Kaituna River can you raft the highest commercially rafted waterfall in the world (7 metres). 6

For even more thrills check out the Wairoa River, cascading through boulder-strewn canyons with some of the finest white water and big drops. Have a go at the region’s world-famous mountain biking trails, relish the spectacular scenery of the lakes, forests and geothermal landscape, and discover the rich cultural history. Rotorua Canopy Tours Fly high above native forest from a bird’s eye perspective, swooping between treetop platforms perched above the canopy of an ancient forest.

This is a three-hour guided zipline eco-tour through one of the most pristine magical native forests in New Zealand. You’ll navigate a 1.2 kilometre network of ziplines, swing bridges and treetop platforms up to 22 metres high in the canopy. The tour is an authentic, personalised, small group experience. The team of quintessential kiwi guides bring the forest to life, getting to know every customer, and ensuring each has the experience of a lifetime. You’ll be educated, enthralled and inspired by their conservation enterprise. Every ticket includes a contribution towards the Canopy Tours vision of restoring the Dansey Road Scenic Reserve to a pre-human eco-system. Thousands of possums, rats and stoats that destroy the native flora and fauna have been removed by the project.

Farm experience A living museum of volcanic activity, Rotorua’s geothermal wonders have been drawing visitors since the 1800s. From the moment you arrive, you’ll be greeted by wafts of sulphur from geothermal hotspots. And they’re a sight to see – creating kaleidoscopes of colour, geysers of steaming water gushing from the ground and pools of mud bubbling and belching. Full of flora and fauna, lakes, forests and geothermal sites, Rotorua’s natural beauty sets the scene for unforgettable experiences and will keep you busy sightseeing for days. Unwind at the end of your day with a soak in one of the many healing waters of the 20

geothermal hot springs. Rotorua sets the scene for unforgettable adventures and encounters only minutes from the city. Dominating the region at a height of 1,111 metres, is the dormant volcano Mt Tarawera. Its violent eruption in 1886 saw four terrifying hours of rocks, ash and boiling hot mud bombard the settlements and surrounds. Whilst destroying the Pink & White Terraces, (the 8th wonder of the world), the eruption created a spectacular 8km long volcanic rift along the length of the summit. The eruption was New Zealand’s greatest natural disaster, but the sight today atop Mt Tarawera is breath-taking.

geothermal bathing bliss The soothing, geothermal water of Rotorua, known as ‘Waiariki’ or ‘water of the gods’ is considered a spa treatment by the many locals and visitors who come to experience the indulgence. The mineral rich muds, traditional massage and indigenous herbs have created a spa culture that is unlike anything you’ll see elsewhere. There are two types of mineral waters used for health purposes in Rotorua: ‘Rachel’, alkaline, sulphur water, and ‘Priest’, free-acid water. Here’s why you need to try a spa pool while you’re here…

Boosts blood circulation While you’re taking a soak, your body is absorbing the minerals from the water, increasing your hydrostatic pressure and getting your blood pumping. That way your body doesn’t feel so stiff and tired either.

Relieves stress The heat from the pool goes deep into your muscles, relaxing them and releasing body tension. By removing the tension from your body, it lets your mind relax and helps you sleep better.

Soothing chronic pain Rotorua’s Rachel and Priest waters have been used to manage rheumatic diseases for many years. Along with soothing the muscles, the heat loosens the skin from the bones and muscles, helping you move more freely.

Heals skin conditions The sulphur in Rotorua’s waters makes collagen, keeping skin healthy and smooth. It also helps with dry scalp, arthritis and other medical conditions.

Eases nasal congestion and digestion The heat and steam rising to your sinuses is great for clearing the nose, and the saltwater helps with digestion problems.

Hangi One of the best ways to experience Māori culture is to try a hangi – traditional Māori food cooked in an earth oven. Used for hundreds of years, Hangi (‘earth oven’) is the traditional Māori cooking method involving digging a pit in the ground and heating stones in it with a large fire. Volcanic rocks are often used because they need to withstand high heat without chipping or crumbling.

Our Bar … Your Bar

Baskets of food are then placed on top of the stones and covered with wet cloths or sheets which are then covered in dirt. The heat converts the water from the cloths into steam and because it cannot escape, it heats and cooks the food. Typically, the food used is a selection of lamb, chicken, pork, beef, shellfish, kumara, potato, corn and pumpkin, taking approximately seven hours. The overall result is a rich, succulent flavour unlike anything else. Tasting a hangi is your must-do cultural experience in Rotorua.

Incredible

marine volcano tour! Absolutely

amazing sights.

Volcanic adventure Two unique islands of impressive and wonderful landscapes - the Bay of Plenty’s very own Beauty and the Beast.

Sitting off Whakatāne’s coast are two very different islands, both remarkable natural environments – Moutohorā (Whale) Island, a verdant wildlife paradise swathed in green, and White Island, a brooding, feisty marine volcano. Wildlife sanctuary Moutohorā Island is a conservation story testament to over 30 years of work by the Department of Conservation, local iwi and volunteers. The once barren, pestinfested island is now regenerated with native trees and plants, such as pohutakawa, kanuka and kawakawa. Restricted access to visitors (only by approved guided tours) has allowed many birds and animals not usually seen on the mainland to flourish. The saddleback bird with its cheeky chatter is a major success story. Kiwis have also been introduced with evidence of their beach fossicking easily seen in the sand. The remaining vestiges of an ancient volcano includes a hot water beach where visitors can dig their own pool and soak, or paddle among beautiful surroundings before returning to Whakatāne. In contrast, White Island is a largely barren, rocky volcano rising from the deep ocean floor. Steam is often visible even 50km away on the mainland. After an 80-minute boat trip, the looming island greets visitors with the distinctive smell of sulphur, often accompanied by the sound of roaring fumeroles. Hard hats and gas masks are issued before visitors explore, each small group accompanied by two guides to cross the crater floor and see the island’s spectacular sights such as yellow sulphur chimneys, roaring fumeroles and the main active crater. Visitors can also explore the skeletal remains of the old sulphurmining factory and hear some intriguing stories about the miners who lived in this unforgiving place. Then return to the boat for a swim and a packed lunch before the journey back, while watching pods of dolphins and sometimes the odd whale.

Daily tours to White Island and Moutohorā Island are subject to weather and sea conditions. Bookings are essential as the departure time varies.
