The characteristic smell in the air is the scent of sulphur due to the many geothermal hotspots. There are 35 marae (meeting grounds) in Rotorua. Renowned as “Nature’s Spa of the South Pacific” due to the healing hot springs and thermal mud. Rotorua boasts 18 lakes (15 of them are fishable) and 3 major rivers.
Rotorua in Māori means ‘second lake’, its history dating back to 1350AD when Polynesian voyagers originally settled in the area by the canoe ‘Te Arawa’. The dynamic Māori culture lives on through the descendants of the Te Arawa tribe – sharing their culture, history, art, music and language in a variety of enriching encounters. Spending time on the water here is an obvious must-do, especially with 18 crystal clear lakes dotted around the region. You’ll appreciate their beauty even more when you realise that many of them are extinct volcanoes. Some are so remote and surrounded by protective forest, the only way you can see them is from the air. There are so many ways you can make the most of these lakes – from kayaking, sailing, paddle boarding, white water rafting, jet boating and more. Check out the surrounding rapids and waterfalls too. Only on Kaituna River can you raft the highest commercially rafted waterfall in the world (7 metres). 6

geothermal bathing bliss The soothing, geothermal water of Rotorua, known as ‘Waiariki’ or ‘water of the gods’ is considered a spa treatment by the many locals and visitors who come to experience the indulgence. Hangi One of the best ways to experience Māori culture is to try a hangi – traditional Māori food cooked in an earth oven. Used for hundreds of years, Hangi (‘earth oven’) is the traditional Māori cooking method involving digging a pit in the ground and heating stones in it with a large fire. Volcanic rocks are often used because they need to withstand high heat without chipping or crumbling.

Baskets of food are then placed on top of the stones and covered with wet cloths or sheets which are then covered in dirt. The heat converts the water from the cloths into steam and because it cannot escape, it heats and cooks the food. Typically, the food used is a selection of lamb, chicken, pork, beef, shellfish, kumara, potato, corn and pumpkin, taking approximately seven hours. The overall result is a rich, succulent flavour unlike anything else. Tasting a hangi is your must-do cultural experience in Rotorua.

Volcanic adventure Two unique islands of impressive and wonderful landscapes - the Bay of Plenty’s very own Beauty and the Beast.
Sitting off Whakatāne’s coast are two very different islands, both remarkable natural environments – Moutohorā (Whale) Island, a verdant wildlife paradise swathed in green, and White Island, a brooding, feisty marine volcano. Wildlife sanctuary Moutohorā Island is a conservation story testament to over 30 years of work by the Department of Conservation, local iwi and volunteers. The once barren, pestinfested island is now regenerated with native trees and plants, such as pohutakawa, kanuka and kawakawa. Restricted access to visitors (only by approved guided tours) has allowed many birds and animals not usually seen on the mainland to flourish. The saddleback bird with its cheeky chatter is a major success story. Kiwis have also been introduced with evidence of their beach fossicking easily seen in the sand. The remaining vestiges of an ancient volcano includes a hot water beach where visitors can dig their own pool and soak, or paddle among beautiful surroundings before returning to Whakatāne. In contrast, White Island is a largely barren, rocky volcano rising from the deep ocean floor. Steam is often visible even 50km away on the mainland. After an 80-minute boat trip, the looming island greets visitors with the distinctive smell of sulphur, often accompanied by the sound of roaring fumeroles. Hard hats and gas masks are issued before visitors explore, each small group accompanied by two guides to cross the crater floor and see the island’s spectacular sights such as yellow sulphur chimneys, roaring fumeroles and the main active crater. Visitors can also explore the skeletal remains of the old sulphurmining factory and hear some intriguing stories about the miners who lived in this unforgiving place. Then return to the boat for a swim and a packed lunch before the journey back, while watching pods of dolphins and sometimes the odd whale.
Daily tours to White Island and Moutohorā Island are subject to weather and sea conditions. Bookings are essential as the departure time varies.
