The colourful geothermal pools, steaming geysers, bubbling mud and majestic volcanoes everywhere you look is what makes Rotorua's landscape so unique. A living museum of volcanic activity, Rotorua’s geothermal wonders have been drawing visitors since the 1800s. From the moment you arrive, you’ll be greeted by wafts of sulphur from geothermal hotspots. And they’re a sight to see – creating kaleidoscopes of colour, geysers of steaming water gushing from the ground and pools of mud bubbling and belching. Full of flora and fauna, lakes, forests and geothermal sites, Rotorua’s natural beauty sets the scene for unforgettable experiences and will keep you busy sightseeing for days. One of the best things about Rotorua? 22
All these unforgettable adventures and encounters are just minutes from the city. Dominating the region at a height of 1,111 metres is the dormant volcano Mount Tarawera. Its violent eruption in 1886 saw four terrifying hours of rocks, ash and boiling hot mud bombard the surrounding settlements. Whilst destroying the Pink & White Terraces (the 8th wonder of the world), the eruption created a spectacular 8km long volcanic rift. The eruption was New Zealand’s greatest natural disaster, but the sight atop Mount Tarawera is breath-taking.

Our Bar … Your Bar A Māori cultural experience is not complete without trying hangi – traditional Māori food cooked in an earth oven. Used for hundreds of years, hangi (‘earth oven’) is the traditional Māori cooking method; digging a pit in the ground and heating stones in it with a large fire. Volcanic rocks are often used because they withstand high heat without chipping or crumbling. Baskets of food are placed on top of the stones and covered with wet cloths/sheets which are then covered in dirt. The heat converts the water from the cloths into steam and because it cannot escape, it heats and cooks the food. Typically, the food used is a selection of meats including shellfish, and kumara, potato, corn and pumpkin, taking approximately seven hours. The overall result is a rich, succulent flavour unlike anything else.

From city to village to white sandy beaches Useful Information
Welcome to the Bay of Plenty!
Important Numbers
It’s easy to see why the Bay of Plenty has long been a traditional kiwi holiday destination. From the bustling harbourside city of Tauranga, to the charming beachside villages of Whakatāne and Waihi, there really is ‘plenty’ for everyone to see and do in this stunning part of New Zealand.
Tauranga
There’s no doubt that the spectacular coastline stretching 125km - is one of the region’s best features, with an abundance of white sandy beaches that can be enjoyed all year round, thanks to its pleasant climate. And while the relaxing, beach-vibe is a magnet for locals and tourists alike, that doesn’t mean there isn’t something for the more adrenalin-filled adventurer too.

Public Transport
Tauranga means ‘safe anchorage’ in Māori.
The Eastern Bay of Plenty was one of the first parts of New Zealand to be occupied by Māori over 1000 years ago. And while Captain James Cook formally named the region in 1769, European settlers didn’t arrive until the early 1830s.
Buses
Captain James Cook named this region the ‘Bay of Plenty’ because he observed, from afar, many Māori villages with well-tended gardens. Whakatāne is the ‘kiwi capital of the world’. The region’s white sandy coastline stretches for 125km. NZ’s most active volcano - White Island - sits 49km offshore from Whakatāne
It’s hard to believe that Tauranga once struggled to grow its population, where there was little over 1,000 residents remaining due to the Land Wars of the 1860s. But flourish it did, thanks to it becoming an export port for the Bay of Plenty in 1950 - creating many jobs for the city and surrounding towns. Also contributing to its success was the abundance of resources and rich soil that has enabled the Bay of Plenty to produce much of New Zealand’s Kiwifruit and Avocado exports. The region is now the fifth largest in the country and nearly 300,000 residents call the BOP (as it’s fondly known) home.
Public buses in Tauranga are called Bay Hoppers and the routes include all major shopping, dining and tourist destinations. For more information visit www.baybus.co.nz
Taxis You can easily catch a taxi (cab) in Tauranga, Mount Maunganui and Whakatane.
Rental Cars You can hire modern rental cars at both Tauranga and Whakatāne airports (plus other locations around Tauranga’s CBD).

Mount Maunganui It hasn’t been voted one of the world’s top 25 beaches for nothing! This stunning stretch of white sand at Main Beach is the perfect place for all types of water activities and sun bathing. It also certainly helps that it also has an epic surf break, suitable for beginners to the more experienced board riders.
Ōhope Find out why this has been voted as New Zealand's most loved beach... just over the hill from Whakatāne. Popular year-round with crystal clear water, rolling ocean waves and plenty of warm white sand, it’s perfect for families who want to picnic and stay awhile.
Waihi Beach A little more low-key than it’s Tauranga counterpart, Waihi Beach is like stepping back in time to a simpler life. Dotted with kiwi ‘beach baches’ the way they used to be, you won’t want to miss a day in the sun here – where time seems to stand still for a while.

“ Incredible
VOLCANIC ADVENTURE
marine volcano tour! Absolutely amazing sights.”
Two unique islands of impressive and wonderful landscapes - the Bay of Plenty’s very own Beauty and the Beast. Sitting off Whakatāne’s coast are two very different islands, both remarkable natural environments – Moutohorā / Whale Island, a verdant wildlife paradise swathed in green, and Whakaari / White Island, a brooding, feisty marine volcano. Wildlife sanctuary Moutohorā Island is a conservation story testament to over 30 years of work by the Department of Conservation, local iwi and volunteers. The once barren, pest-infested island is now regenerated with native trees and plants, such as pōhutakawa, kānuka and kawakawa. Restricted access to visitors (only by approved guided tours) has allowed many birds and animals not usually seen on the mainland to flourish. The saddleback bird with its cheeky chatter is a major success story. Kiwis have also been introduced with evidence of their beach fossicking easily seen in the sand. The remaining vestiges of an ancient volcano includes a hot water beach where visitors can dig their own pool and soak, or paddle among beautiful surroundings before returning to Whakatāne. In contrast, Whakaari / White Island is a largely barren, rocky volcano rising from the deep ocean floor. Steam is often visible even 50km away on the mainland. After an 80-minute boat trip, the looming island greets visitors with the distinctive smell of sulphur, often accompanied by the sound of roaring fumeroles. Hard hats and gas masks are issued before visitors explore, each small group accompanied by two guides to cross the crater floor and see the island’s spectacular sights such as yellow sulphur chimneys, roaring fumeroles and the main active crater. Visitors can also explore the skeletal remains of the old sulphur-mining factory and hear some intriguing stories about the miners who lived in this unforgiving place. Then return to the boat for a swim and a packed lunch before the journey back, while watching pods of dolphins and sometimes the odd whale.
Daily tours to Whakaari / White Island and Moutohorā Island are subject to weather and sea conditions. Bookings are essential as the departure time varies.
