“A great day, a great Māori cultural experience and the geysers, mud pools and steaming waters are magical. The power and awe of this special place hits you straight away.” - TripAdvisor 2019

Te Puia The centre for New Zealand's Māori culture and geothermal wonders. Since the beginning of time, the stunning Te Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley has been a place of powerful energies and natural beauty. Home to the magnificent Pōhutu geyser, Māori have been living here for almost 700 years. Nourished by those energies that continue to shape our people and our culture today. Te Puia takes its origin from that heritage with many of our guides linking directly to Rotorua’s earliest hosts. The stories they relay to our visitors have been told for generations, handed down through their individual families. Our guided tours feature the Pōhutu geyser, mud pools, hot springs and silica formations. Visitors will also see skilful artisans create timeless pieces in the arts of carving and weaving at the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute. Cultural performances are on offer at Rotowhio Marae, showcasing traditional and contemporary haka and waiata (song). Te Puia’s brand new Kiwi Conservation Centre is an exciting addition this Summer, housing three resident kiwi in state-of-theart enclosures open daily. And after experiencing our geothermal and cultural legacy first hand, Pātaka Kai restaurant serves delicious hangi buffet lunch and dinner with spectacular views of the valley!

The colourful geothermal pools, steaming geysers, bubbling mud and majestic volcanoes is what makes Rotorua's landscape so unique. A living museum of volcanic activity, Rotorua’s geothermal wonders have been drawing visitors since the 1800s. From the moment you arrive, you’ll be greeted by wafts of sulphur from geothermal hotspots. And they’re a sight to see – creating kaleidoscopes of colour, geysers of steaming water gushing from the ground and pools of mud bubbling and belching. Full of flora and fauna, lakes, forests

and geothermal sites, Rotorua’s natural beauty sets the scene for unforgettable experiences and will keep you busy sightseeing for days. One of the best things about Rotorua? All these unforgettable adventures and encounters are just minutes from the city. Dominating the region at a height of 1,111 metres is the dormant volcano Mount Tarawera. Its violent eruption in

1886 saw four terrifying hours of rocks, ash and boiling hot mud bombard the surrounding settlements. Whilst destroying the Pink & White Terraces (the 8th wonder of the world), the eruption created a spectacular 8km long volcanic rift. The eruption was New Zealand’s greatest natural disaster, but the sight atop Mount Tarawera is breath-taking.

Our Carvings Founded in 1986, we’ve grown from humble roots to become a trusted leader in the creation of handcrafted jade carvings. Our carvings are steeped in meaning and inspired by the art and culture of New Zealand. Working with many carvers across Aotearoa allows us to bring together the largest and most diverse collection of jade pendants, jewellery and art in the country. No two pieces of greenstone are the same, guaranteeing every carving is unique to you and your loved ones.

Pounamu – The Treasured Stone Pounamu is the traditional Māori name for greenstone or New Zealand jade. It is found only in New Zealand’s South Island, on the West Coast, created under our mountains and concealed in our rivers. The stone is deeply treasured by Māori for its strength, beauty and connection to the spiritual world. Pounamu carvings are thought to soak in the essence of the wearer and are often passed down through families for generations. Come and discover the beauty of pounamu on your trip to Rotorua. A Māori cultural experience is not complete without trying hangi – traditional Māori food cooked in an earth oven. Used for hundreds of years, hangi (‘earth oven’) is the traditional Māori cooking method; digging a pit in the ground and heating stones in it with a large fire. Volcanic rocks are often used because they withstand high heat without chipping or crumbling. Baskets of food are placed on top of the stones and covered with wet cloths/sheets which are then covered in dirt. The heat converts the water from the cloths into steam and because it cannot escape, it heats and cooks the food.

History and culture

Public Transport

Tauranga means ‘safe anchorage’ in Māori.

The Eastern Bay of Plenty was one of the first parts of New Zealand to be occupied by Māori over 1000 years ago. And while Captain James Cook formally named the region in 1769, European settlers didn’t arrive until the early 1830s.

Buses

Captain James Cook named this region the ‘Bay of Plenty’ because he observed, from afar, many Māori villages with welltended gardens. Whakatāne is the ‘kiwi capital of the world’. The region’s white sandy coastline stretches for 125km. NZ’s most active volcano - White Island - sits 49km offshore from Whakatāne

It’s hard to believe that Tauranga once struggled to grow its population, where there was little over 1,000 residents remaining due to the Land Wars of the 1860s. But flourish it did, thanks to it becoming an export port for the Bay of Plenty in 1950 - creating many jobs for the city and surrounding towns. Also contributing to its success was the abundance of resources and rich soil that has enabled the Bay of Plenty to produce much of New Zealand’s Kiwifruit and Avocado exports. The region is now the fifth largest in the country and nearly 300,000 residents call the BOP (as it’s fondly known) home.

Public buses in Tauranga are called Bay Hoppers and the routes include all major shopping, dining and tourist destinations. For more information visit www.baybus.co.nz

Taxis You can easily catch a taxi (cab) in Tauranga, Mount Maunganui and Whakatane.

Rental Cars You can hire modern rental cars at both Tauranga and Whakatāne airports (plus other locations around Tauranga’s CBD). 37

Mount Maunganui It hasn't been voted one of the world's top 25 beaches for nohting! This stunning stretch of white sand at Main Beach is the perfect place for all types of water activities and sun bathing. It also helps that it has an epic surf break, suitable for beginners to the more experienced surfers.

Ōhope Voted New Zealand's most loved beach, just over the hill from Whakatāne. Popular year-round with crystal clear water, rolling ocean waves and plenty of warm white sand, it's perfect for families who want to picnic and stay awhile.

Waihi Beach A little more low-key than it's Tauranga counterpart, Waihi Beach is like stepping back in time to a simpler life. Dotted with kiwi 'beach baches' the way they used to be, you won't want to miss a day in the sun here - where time seems to stand still for a while.

Papamoa Just down the road from the popular Mt Maunganui main beach, Papamoa has coastline that stretches as far as the eye can see.

Pukehina If you prefer your beaches more remote, Pukehina is half-way between Tauranga and Whakatāne, and boasts an extremely laid-back vibe next to an estuary harbour. Camera

Whakaari White Island

Pack up the kids and come on down to Blueberry Corner to spend the day eating yummy berries and enjoying Whakatāne’s favourite real fruit ice creams. The atmosphere is vibrant, whānau friendly and full of life. You can meet the newest member of our team, Āniwaniwa, our rainbow lorikeet.

Many are drawn to the fascination of the spectacular lunar landscape that is White Island, known to Māori as Whakaari, ‘to make visible’. At the northern end of the Taupo volcanic zone, lies New Zealand’s most continuously active volcano and private scenic reserve, an uninhabited island rising from the South Pacific Ocean only 48 kilometres from the Bay of Plenty coast. An active stratovolcano for at least 150,000 years, White Island is truly one of the most fascinating and accessible volcanoes on earth. To protect its birdlife and the pristine condition of this wonderland, White Island was declared a private scenic reserve in 1953, only accessible for guided tours by boat or scenic flights. To explore New Zealand’s only live marine volcano, is to visit a fascinating landscape that is quite surreal; a unique adventure to witness nature’s tremendous power, as you can walk right inside the main crater. Marvel at the spectacular turquoise waters of the crater’s lake, hissing steam vents, bubbling mud and fragile yellow and white sulphur crystals, alongside the remains of a factory, vestiges of sulphur mining from 1880’s to 1930’s.

HOT SPRINGS

The perfect place from which to explore the Eastern Bay of Plenty www.awakerisprings.co.nz

White Island is an impressive sight rising from the ocean. What you see as you approach is literally the ‘tip of the iceberg’ as 70 percent of this massive structure lies under the sea. Above sea level, the main crater makes up most of the island, reaching 321 metres high. The waters around the island are abundant with sea and birdlife. Renowned for multi-day game fishing, and as one of New Zealand’s best dive sites with amazing visibility and underwater steam vents.
