Fast Facts The Great Lake is the size of Singapore. It's average depth is 110m, it's deepest point is 186m. It is 46km long and 33km wide. The shoreline is 193km long. It has an area of 616km2. The lake's volume is 59km3.
Geothermal history Lake Taupō sits in the caldera of a volcano which began erupting 300,000 years ago. The caldera formed from a collapse during the Oruanui eruption approximately 27,000 years ago, remarked as the most violent eruption in history, generating 430km3 of ash and deposit covering much of the Central North Island. The eruption responsible for the shape of the modern caldera occurred around 180AD (The Hatepe or Taupō Eruption). It was recorded that ash from the eruption has been found in Greenland and Antarctica, and at the time of the eruption, Ancient Romans and Chinese experienced dark red skies. You can still experience this geothermal history today – visit one of the many geothermal areas in the region, naturally heated hot pools, or dip your toes in hotspots scattered around the lake, just look for the steam!

“Stunning... Brilliant natural canvas, great sightseeing area in such a beautiful place" - TripAdvisor May2019
By boat or kayak, visit Mine Bay's must see Maori rock carvings •••••
One of New Zealand’s most extraordinary cultural artworks, the Māori rock carvings tower 14 metres above the water at Mine Bay and is one of Taupo’s most popular tourist attractions. In 1976 Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell's grandmother asked him to create a likeness of her ancestor, Ngātoroirangi, on a totara tree in Taupō. She wanted to create a permanent connection for her family to their land, but he wasn’t able to find one. Instead, Matahi went out onto Lake Taupō, and it was here that he found a large rock alcove, where he had a vision of a tattooed face. Taking shape over four years, marae-taught carver Matahi created the work of art with a team of four artists, Jono Randell, Te Miringa Hohaia, Dave Hegglun and Steve Myhre. Wearing nothing but safety goggles and speedos, the carvers marked out the artwork using chalk, string lines and spray paint and then sculpted it by hand.
The spectacular carving takes the face of Matahi’s ancestor, with each part of the artwork having its own story and meaning. The smaller carvings portray tupuna (ancestors) and kaitiaki (guardians) of the local Māori tribe. The carvings can only be seen from the water, and there are plenty of ways to make your way out there. Choose from a number of scenic cruises across the lake - by steam boat, catamaran or sail boat - or make it a true water adventure with a kayaking tour (either guided or unguided).

“The power and awe of this special place hits you straight away.”
Huka Falls
- TripAdvisor 2019 •••••
New Zealand’s most visited natural attraction and a must see during your stay in Taupō! The Huka Falls is an impressive set of waterfalls on the Waikato River that drains Lake Taupō. Named from the Māori word huka, meaning ‘foam’, they are a visual feast of power and you can find them situated in Wairakei Tourist Park.
Viewing the falls
What causes the falls? The Waikato River, normally up to 100 metres wide, narrows to just 15 metres, which is what causes more than 220,000 litres of water to thunder through and over the 11-metre-high waterfall into the frothing blue-green pool below. It’s enough water to fill one Olympic sized swimming pool in 11 seconds! While it is not the highest waterfall by any means (the main fall is just over six metres), it’s the sheer volume and speed at which the Waikato River is forced through the narrow chasm which makes Huka Falls an absolute spectacle. credit where it's due: lovetaupo.com
There are various viewing points to admire the falls, each providing different angles. The main access is across the main bridge and the various lookout spots are very user friendly, with most pathways suitable for wheelchairs. Wairakei Tourist Park is also a walker's and mountain biker's dream, so you can get there from Spa Thermal Park along an easy walking track, or by bike from Spa Thermal Park on the Rotary Ride (a Grade 2 trail).
How to get there The falls are a 5-minute drive north of the town centre, just follow the signs along State Highway 1. In the main carpark, there is a visitor kiosk (open 7 days) with information on how the falls were created and about Mighty River Power’s role in regulating the flow rate.

os¡ te ¡ ri a An osteria in Italy originated in 13th century Venice and was originally a place which served wine and simple food. The name evokes the hospitality of ancient local inns which date back to Roman times, a place to eat, drink and be merry. Our modern-day osterias retain this ambience but have evolved over the years to be more sophisticated venues for food as well as serving more varieties of wine.

Catch & Cook! The only way to taste trout is to catch one yourself. If you’re fortunate enough to catch a trout while you’re here, most restaurants in Taupō will happily cook your catch for you. Make sure you check with them in advance, and you'll need to take your fishing licence with you. Trout is great on the barbecue, smoked, and whipped up into a pate!

Venture in to the volcanic loop South of Taupo, an entirely new playground – unspoilt, raw and natural – rich with volcanic mountains and alpine landscapes awaits you. Turangi is the gateway to the Volcanic Loop. Sitting at the Southern end of Lake Taupō, it is a vibrant destination for outdoor lovers, with so many ways to experience its amazing countryside, including white water rafting, kayaking, mountain biking, bushwalking, hunting, and fly fishing – just to name a few. The Central Plateau mountains: Mount Ruapehu, Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe, are the most dominant and breath-taking features of the North Island. credit where it's due: @Trouthuntingnz 40
The Volcanic Loop Highway surrounds this stunning scenic area and is the best route to access everything in the Central Plateau. You simply must experience Mount Ruapehu on your loop adventure, home to Whakapapa and Tūroa ski fields – the largest and most developed ski area in New Zealand. And while you’re here, take on the renowned Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Approximately one million people visit Tongariro National Park each year, and while the ski fields draw significant crowds in the winter, there are actually more visitors in the summer, due to the increasingly popular walking and hiking trails.

Natural and cultural history
Tongariro National Park encompasses 79,596
At less than 500,000 years old, the landforms of Tongariro National Park are, in geological terms, relatively ‘young’. The first activity from Mount Tongariro was thought to be about 260,000 years ago, with the earliest of Mount Ngauruhoe’s eruptions around 2500 years ago.
hectares. Mount Ruapehu has recorded more than 60 eruptions since 1945. Mount Ruapehu has five individual peaks, including the highest point in the North Island at 2797m. The three volcanos are part of the Pacific Ocean’s ‘Ring of Fire’. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is 19.4km long.
The Pacific and Indian-Australian tectonic plate boundary is almost totally responsible for the existence of New Zealand and the three volcanoes in Tongariro National Park are a direct result of the power generated by the movement of those forces. The peaks were gifted in 1887 to the New Zealand people by the local Māori tribe, Ngāti Tūwharetoa, and they sit within the oldest national park in New Zealand. It is the fourth national park established in the world, and the first to be gifted by a country’s indigenous people.

Cold mountain springs, herb fields, lava flows, active craters, steam vents, and emerald coloured alpine lakes are just some of what you can experience with spectacular views.
