THE PERFECT BLEND OF LEISURE AND ADVENTURE
Lake Taupo is the size of Singapore
220,000 litres of freshwater thunder down Huka Falls every second
The region is home to New Zealand’s first ever National Park, created in 1887
Lake Taupō is actually a caldera, and has erupted around 28 times since it formed
2 The Ultimate Guide
With humbling views of New Zealand’s largest freshwater lake, striking volcanic landscapes, fantastic fishing spots and the famous crystal blue Huka Falls, Great Lake Taupō is truly blessed with world-class natural attractions.
Visitors to the region will discover pristine green countryside, spectacular mountain scenery, peaceful native bush, and some of the largest pine forests in the Southern Hemisphere. With a blend of natural beauty, diversity, and experiences, Taupō is the ultimate adventure playground.
The boutique-style town centre is packed with gourmet food options, from casual cafes to upmarket restaurants, and boasts art and craft galleries great for whiling away a relaxing day out. Accommodation near the lake is plentiful, with lots of recreational activities to keep everyone busy. Taupō is also widely known as the events capital of New Zealand, with a busy calendar that keeps the town buzzing throughout the year.
Venture out of the main centre and discover beautiful bays and welcoming townships with their own unique flavour. Follow the lake around to the west and enjoy Acacia Bay and Kinloch or take in the captivating beauty of the Western Bays. Head southwards and experience the rewarding adventures waiting for you at the southern lake. Admire the township of Tūrangi, gateway into the striking Tongariro National Park region.
From the sedate to the sensational, a leisurely cruise on the lake or a thrilling
white-water adventure, you’ll soon love Taupō like the locals do.
Geothermal History
The stunning Great Lake Taupō may look peaceful and serene now but in fact owes its beauty to a rather violent and traumatic history. Located in one of the most active geothermal and volcanic regions in the world, with many fault lines crossing the area, Lake Taupō sits in the caldera of a volcano which began erupting around 300,000 years ago. The caldera itself was formed from a collapse during the Oruanui eruption approximately 27,000 years ago, which threw out 750 cubic kilometres of ash and pumice.
This eruption was followed by one of the largest ever recorded volcanic eruptions in the world. The Taupō eruption, around 1,800 years ago, felled great forests and burned trees 30 kilometres away. This devasting eruption covered 20,000 square kilometres with pumice. It was so large that legends say the ash blocked the sun for days following, and ancient Roman and Chinese texts report people seeing dark red skies.
While the volcano has since calmed down, you can still enjoy the region’s geothermal history today. Visit one of the many geothermal wonderlands in the region, dip your toes into one of the hotspots scattered around the lake, or take a soak in a naturally heated, mineral-rich hot pool. Just look out for the steam!

TAUPŌ’S BUCKET LIST ADVENTURES Must See - Must Do
Māori Rock Carvings
One of New Zealand’s most extraordinary cultural artworks, the Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings are a sight to see, whether by boat or by kayak. Towering 14 metres above Lake Taupō’s deep waters, these contemporary carvings by artist Matahi Brightwell have become one of the North Island’s biggest tourist attractions. It’s also a favoured spot among locals for parking up to enjoy some fishing or water sports.
Aratiatia Rapids
Adventure further down the Waikato River and discover the stunning transformation of the Aratiatia Rapids. Three times a day in winter and four in summer, nearby Aratiatia Dam opens its gates and sends thousands of litres of water coursing down. Get there early before the dam gates open while the gully is peaceful, and watch it transform into churning, raging rapids before your eyes. The whole family will love this unique experience.
Waikato River Float
On a hot summer’s day, you can spot hundreds of visitors and locals alike gently floating down the Waikato River in rafts, inflatable rings, boats, and kayaks. Grab your floaty or inflatable and soon you too can be enjoying the peace and serenity of the river. Park a pick-up car at Hipapatua Reserve, drive to the Gates Park Carpark and hop in at the calm river opening straight over the field. Wear a life jacket and be careful not to miss the exit and end up going over the Huka Falls!
Huka Falls
Vivid blue waters and thundering cascades make Huka Falls a mesmerising, memorable experience. This breath-taking 11 metre waterfall erupts from a natural gorge, barrelling into the Waikato River below. It’s also the most visited and photographed natural attraction in New Zealand – you’ll know why when you see it for yourself. Every angle provides a spectacle, with multiple viewpoints to look out from. And you’ll hear the falls well before you see them, as nearly a quarter of a million litres of water plummet down the waterfall every second.

Huka Falls
The Taupō region is full of amazing experiences to discover, but if you’re short on time or looking for the quintessential Taupō adventure, here’s a few to add to your must-do list.
Pureora Forest Park
From day trips to overnight stays in a Department of Conservation hut, Pureora offers great walks as well as cycle trails. Waihora Lagoon (730m / 15 mins) is a short, familyfriendly walk threading through tall rimu and kahikatea trees to the namesake lagoon, a small and serene rain-fed lake surrounded by swamp forest. Rimu Walk (1.7km / 1hr) is an easy loop walk taking you from the end of Kakaho Road through dense rimu forest rich with birdlife.
Mount Ruapehu
Hit the snow in winter or see the sights in summer! For snow bunnies, the Whakapapa and Tūroa ski fields provide the largest commercial skiing and snowboarding area in New Zealand. There are terrains to suit all skill levels, plus dedicated areas for sledding, tobogganing, and tubing.
Head to the top of Whakapapa on Sky Waka, New Zealand’s longest gondola, during summer or winter. Take in awe-inspiring views of the World Dual Heritage National Park or enjoy one of the various scenic walks.
Trout Fishing
Did you know that Lake Taupō provides some of the best trout fishing in New Zealand and even the world? The trout are not allowed to be sold, so the only way to taste a brown or rainbow trout is to catch one yourself. There’s nothing more relaxing than chartering a boat on the pristine lake or fly-fishing in a crystal-clear river. If you’re fortunate to catch one, some Taupō restaurants are happy to cook your catch for you – just be sure to call in advance and remember to take your fishing licence with you.

With free entry and complimentary honey tastings, the whole family can encounter live beehives and learn about the important role of bees in our lives. You can also enjoy delicious ice cream or drinks in their beautiful gardens.
With its picturesque lakeside location and a whopping 18 holes, Taupō Mini Golf is a great way to spend some time challenging yourselves to get a hole-in-one. This spot has been popular with locals and visitors alike since it opened in 1992, and the well-manicured gardens are the perfect setting to hit a few balls and enjoy a memorable experience.
The Craters of the Moon geothermal walkway wanders through a weird, other-worldly landscape featuring bubbling craters and steaming vents. A 45-minute walk traverses the unique landscape around this cratered valley, which is part of the largest geothermal region in New Zealand. Feel that heat of the Earth under the wooden boardwalks as you explore a valley hissing with clouds of steam and bubbling cauldrons of mud, right beneath your feet.

Wharewaka Point
This bustling new suburb is a favourite among families, and Wharewaka Point caters to all with a playground, lake access, and undercover barbecues. This pleasant reserve has plenty of space and is situated seven kilometres from the town centre. It sweeps round to Five Mile Bay, another popular swimming spot.
Kinloch
Well worth the 15-minute drive from central Taupo, Kinloch is a beautiful place to enjoy lunch by the lake and a swim. There’s a small playground for the little ones, and a café and general store selling takeaways and ice creams, great for those hot summer afternoons.
Lakefront
With picturesque views, picnic tables, reserves, and plenty of open spaces, the lakefront is always a favourite picnic spot for locals and visitors. Having recently undergone extensive redevelopment, the lakefront is more pedestrian friendly than ever, and the long stretch of lakefront means even in the crowded summer season, you’ll always find a spot.
Acacia Bay
Whether you choose North Bay to picnic while the kids enjoy jumping off the jetty and the swimming pontoon, or set up camp at South Bay by the boat ramp, Acacia Bay is a huge family favourite. Sprawl on a blanket, take in the sun, a picnic, and a swim.
Taupo Marina
Watch the boats cruise past while you relax on the origins of the Waikato River. The marina has a café where the boats berth, and you can access a beautifully grassed area via Ferry Road, complete with picnic tables and stunning views across the lake to the mountains.
Lake Rotopounamu
A jewel of the district, Rotopounamu is a small but stunning lake, cradled by native forest. This hidden gem is southwest of Turangi off State Highway 47, and is dotted with inviting beaches. Bring your swimming gear, set up your picnic and spend the day in this tranquil haven. The Lake Rotopounamu Track circles the lake and is a special favourite among nature lovers, birdwatches and families.

WORLD FAMOUS IN NEW ZEALAND
Tongariro National Park
This stunning area of natural beauty is famous for its rugged volcanic scenery, epic hikes, and all-season adventures.
Breathtakingly unforgettable
Recognised for both its natural and cultural significance, the park is home to the most dominant and breath-taking features of the North Island: Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro, and Mt Ngauruhoe. Year-round, tackle the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s best one-day hikes. At 17km and taking approximately 6-8 hours, the trek takes you around active craters, lava flows, steam vents, and emerald-green alpine lakes.
No matter the season, you’ll find plenty of great things to do in New Zealand’s oldest National Park. Here is just a sample of activities to get you off the beaten track and out into this beautiful dual World Heritage area.
If you like sightseeing with a difference, look to Forgotten World Adventures. Their awardwinning tours have a unique twist: travel by rail cart through one New Zealand’s most breathtakingly remote locations. Enjoy the enriching sense of escapism and quality time with friends and family while you learn about the region’s rich pioneering history. Forgotten World also offer jet boat tours down the historic Whanganui River, and multi-day tours including helicopter rides.
A trek to remember
Planning to take on the awe-inspiring Alpine Crossing? The trek can be steep and unpredictable, so be sure to wear proper clothing, suitable footwear, and bring plenty of food and water. The Crossing is possible yearround but take care during winter months as snow adds to the complexity of the challenge –crampons are essential.
The famous hike is one-way, starting and ending in different locations. If you have your own car, book parking and shuttle transport with Tongariro Transport Hub. They can arrange shuttle drop offs and pick ups for your hike, with the best option being to leave your car at the end car park at Ketetahi and take a shuttle to the starting point. Tongariro Transport Hub also offer eco-tourism activities spanning hiking, paddling, and mountain-biking in and around the Tongariro National Park.
42 The Ultimate Guide
Forgotten World Tunnel
The area is also popular among mountain bikers, with trails for all abilities. In particular, the 42nd Traverse is one of the most loved trails in the North Island. Following an old logging trail, the 46km track covers some of the most remote landscape in the country, with a backdrop of the park’s mountains.
Après adventure
Schnapps Bar in National Park Village is the perfect place to relax after a big hike or ride, or party après ski-style after a day snowboarding or skiing on Mount Ruapehu. Chill out with panoramic views of the central plateau mountains, and great meals on offer. There’s also an 18-hole mini golf course - fun for all ages with some of the best views going!
