The stunning Great Lake Taupō is a volcanic crater that owes its beauty to a very violent and traumatic history. Located in one of the most active geothermal and volcanic regions in the world, Lake Taupō sits in the caldera of a volcano which began erupting 300,000 years ago. The caldera formed from a collapse during the Oruanui

eruption approximately 27,000 years ago, which threw out 750 cubic kilometres of ash and pumice. The Oruanui eruption was followed by another (the Taupō eruption) just 1,800 years ago, one of the largest ever recorded in the world. It felled great forests, burned trees 30 kilometres away and covered 20,000 square kilometres with pumice. It was recorded that ash from the eruption has been found in Greenland and Antarctica, and at the time of the eruption, ancient Romans and Chinese experienced dark red skies. You can still experience this geothermal history today – visit one of the many geothermal areas in the region, naturally heated hot pools, or dip your toes in hotspots scattered around the lake, just look for the steam!

Lake Taupō Hole in One

Rapids Jet

B O AT S , B O AT S , B O AT S

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that Lake Taupō boasts some of the best boating tours our country can offer. The first on that list is the iconic Rapids Jet. Their superfast jet boats – with 500-horsepower, 496 Chevy V8 engine connected to a Hamilton 212 jet unit – zoom down the Waikato River hitting max speeds of 90km/h, through white-water, and past impressive rock faces lining narrow canyons. It’s an exhilarating ride of spins, cheers and peals of laughter with the odd splash of pure Waikato blue. The pace might slow but the fun continues when you hit the lake on a private charter with Chris Jolly Outdoors. From cruising Taupō’s unspoilt bays, to fishing and clay target shooting - they can help craft the ultimate day out. With in-house catering options, including onboard bbq, plus a licensed bar, they can even help source the onboard entertainment - proving perfect for stag-dos and parties. If you’re wanting to take it one step further, the team can also organise fly fishing, hunting and hiking expeditions.

TA K E T H E C H A L L E N G E

If you didn’t catch the biggest trout, do you think you can hit a hole in one? Drop by Lake Taupō’s iconic floating pontoon to take a swing at a big prize of $10,000 cash. Try this unique golfing challenge right in the heart of Te Ika a Maui, boasting some of the country’s most beautiful views. Over 1200 winners to date, there’s an average of 1 hole-in-one every two weeks. With group bookings available, take on the competition and show off your skills. TA U P Ō B E E R G A R D E N

Getting hungry (and thirsty)? Swing by Finn’s Bistro & Beer Garden. Their fresh, modern pub-food menu includes all the classics and is the perfect spot to chill out in the afternoon or pick things up in the evening. There’s plenty of seating around the bar and in the afternoons, their beer garden means you can enjoy their huge selection of craft beer, lager and cider in the sun. Plus, there’s 12 big TV screens, so you won’t miss the big game while playing a game of pool or two.

Don’t have your own equipment? Don’t stress. Taupō has everything for those who are less experienced or just want to try it out while enjoying the natural beauty of the region. Take the hassle out of your trip by booking a bike tour (or hire) through FourB. They offer bike hire and guiding across the Great Lake Trail, Craters MTB Park and Huka Trails, and boast the biggest fleet of full suspension and hardtail mountain ebikes in Taupō. Based in Kinloch for the Great Lake Trail and Huka Falls Road for Craters MTB Park – hire and ride straight to the trail! They’re also the largest shuttle provider for the Great Lake Trail, accommodating up to 22 people and bikes in their two 11-seater vans, perfect for groups! STUNNING TRAILS

For the more seasoned rider, try the Great Lake Trails. Comprised of 3 sections – Waihaha, Kawakawa, and Whakaipo, each at 4-5 hours each – you can break up your trip depending on your experience and schedule. Ride the rim of a super volcano, enjoy spectacular views across Lake Taupō and Tongariro, and skirt sparkling waterfalls and beautiful beaches across a total 85km of trails.

If you’re a member of Bike Taupō, you can ride Craters Mountain Bike Park. You can also purchase a 7-day visitor pass for $10 via bikeTaupō.org.nz or FourB. With a variety of trails to suit everyone from kids to experienced riders, there’s around 50km of trails winding through exotic pine and eucalyptus plantations. The volcanic pumice soil allows for quick draining, so you can ride all year round. Predominantly grade 1-2, Huka Trails is an easy ride option that winds along the Waikato River, connecting Taupō town with Huka Falls, Aratiatia Dam, and Wairakei Tourist Park. The Rotary Ride (grade 3) is a great way to visit the Huka Falls from Spa Thermal Park. On your return, don’t miss a break at the super-cute Lil Something kiosk at the Spa Thermal Park. Popular with birdwatchers, you’re likely to spot kaka, kereru and falcon. The lake is also a popular swimming spot and boasts crystal clear waters. Further south, venture into the unspoilt, raw, alpine landscape of the Dual World Heritage Tongariro National Park. Recognised for its natural and cultural significance, the park is New Zealand’s oldest National Park and home to the most dominant and breath-taking features of the North Island: Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro and

Mt Ngauruhoe. The Volcanic Loop Highway surrounds this stunningly scenic area and is the best route to access all the points of interest in the Central Plateau. Millions visit Tongariro National Park each year, the ski fields draw significant crowds in the winter, with many more visitors in the summer, thanks to the increasingly popular walking and hiking trails. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing boasts cold mountain springs, herb fields, lava flows, active craters, steam vents, emerald-coloured lakes, and spectacular volcanic terrain scenery are just some of what you can experience on New Zealand’s best one-day hike. The 17km trek takes approx. 6-8 hours to complete.

Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Martin Grafetsberger

Truly rewarding and unmissable – the views are unbeatable, this once in a lifetime experience – unforgettable. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is heralded as New Zealand’s best oneday hike, Mount Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe with scenic, tussockcovered countryside. As you venture into the country’s oldest National Park, you enter a contrasting wonderland of stark and stunning volcanic terrain.

A N A L L- S E AS O N A DV E N T U R E

The Crossing sits within Tongariro National Park - formed in 1887 when the three peaks were gifted to New Zealand by Paramount Ngati Tuwharetoa Chief, Te Heuheu Tukino IV. The unique dual World Heritage status is due to its natural and Māori cultural signficance.

Possible year round, be aware the climbs can be steep and unpredictable, and snow only adds to the complexity of the challenge. The 19.4-kilometre journey should therefore not be taken lightly, in winter especially – the right gear, such as crampons, is essential. The walk takes approximately 6-8 hours, so be sure to wear the right clothing, suitable footwear and take plenty of food and water.

GETTING THERE

In the presence of active volcanoes you can experience some of the National Park’s special gifts; cold mountain springs, herb fields, lava flows, active craters, steam vents, and emeraldcoloured alpine lakes - just some of the spectacular views you will encounter. It’s these dramatic scenes and unique landforms that make the Crossing a world-renowned trek.

The walk starts at Mangatepopo Road and finishes at Ketetahi Road. With limited parking near to the access points, the best way to get to and from the hike is with a local shuttle service. There are plenty of shuttle operators to help get you there, including transport from Taupō.
