History of

WHAKATĀNE Te hītori o Whakatāne According to oral tradition, more than 1000 years ago Tiwakawaka, grandson of Māui, was the first to discover New Zealand and settled his people at the site of Whakatāne’s town centre today. Several generations later came the mighty Toi, paramount chief and founder of many tribes that spread over much of the North Island. Toi’s people founded Kapu-te-rangi, one of the oldest known pā sites in New Zealand, which overlooks Whakatāne. Toroa, captain of the Mataatua waka (canoe), arrived around 200 years after Toi. Toroa moored near Kākahoroa, and the men climbed the hillside to Kapute-rangi, leaving a small group of women—including Toroa’s daughter, Wairaka, aboard their waka.

6

The outgoing tide soon threatened to carry them out to sea, however, so Wairaka called out, “E! Kia Whakatāne au i ahau” - “Let me act like a man!” – and against all custom and tradition, she and the other women steered the canoe to safety. Whakatāne had its name. Toroa’s people intermarried with the existing residents, and from these unions descended the tribes of Ngāti Awa, Tūhoe, and Te Whakatōhea, who remain the guardians of the land to this day.

On the water Kei runga te wai

Whakatāne is a fantastic all-round fishing destination. A variety of game fish can be caught here, as well as snapper, kingfish and many more. For land-based ocean fishing, Matatā and Thornton beaches are popular for surfcasting, while Ōhiwa Harbour offers great family fishing from the boat, wharf or shoreline. The nature sanctuary of Moutohorā/Whale Island offers excellent diving and snorkelling, particularly around Seafire, a ship sunk to create an artificial reef. Or take a nature walk, eco-adventure or guided kayak around the island. If all this isn’t enough, how about learning to paddleboard or taking a jet-boat down the Rangitāiki River?

Arts & culture Ngā mahi toi me te ahurea

Whakatāne enjoys a vibrant arts and culture scene. Music, visual arts, dance, sculpture, traditional Māori art and everything in between can be found here, culminating in the popular Summer Arts Festival. Te Kōputu a te Whanga a Toi – Whakatāne’s award-winning library and exhibition centre – is a must-see. At its heart is the museum, where you’re invited on a voyage of discovery traversing the unique pre-Māori, early-Māori and European settlement of the District. Whakatāne was originally known as Kākahoroa, one of the first in Aotearoa to be settled by Māori. You can visit sites recalling the pre-eminent ancestor, Toi-kai-rakau, and the later voyagers of the Mataatua waka (canoe) including the story of how Whakatāne was named. Grab a guide to our historic places from the Whakatāne i-SITE and follow the history through Whakatāne. Another great cultural treasure is the Mataatua Wharenui, which has now been restored to its original majesty after 130 years of travelling the world. The ancestral carvings and legends of Ngāti Awa are brought to life through guided tours and a world-class digital light show that details the incredible story of ‘The House that Came Home’.
