Alberta Culture Days in Medicine Hat “Alberta Culture Days, which is part of the Canada-wide Culture Days movement, is a three-day celebration of Alberta’s unique blend of peoples and passions and the importance of arts and culture in building healthy and vibrant communities. Now in its fifth year, Alberta Culture Days is spearheaded by the Government of Alberta and runs throughout the province on the weekend of September 27. The weekend includes activities of all sorts, from impromptu sidewalk chalk art exhibitions to black tie symphony concerts – Alberta Culture Days features something for everyone!” • http://ab.culturedays.ca/en/about Medalta Potteries National Historic Site, Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre, along with Miyawasin Centre, Medicine Hat Cultural Centre, MH Public Library and others, with the support of Medicine Hat Accommodation Association, Government of Alberta and theCity of Medicine Hat are offering some of the most engaging and interesting cultural opportunities in southern Alberta. The theme of the weekend here is Fire & Water – two of the elements that played the largest roles in the creation of Medicine Hat and, ultimately, Western Canada.

Fire Fire was certainly the formative element in Medicine Hat’s creation. For over a century, the fuel under Medicine Hat’s earth fed the flames which turned soil into brick, and from brick into homes. Fire creates the vessels from which you drink and eat. Medalta – as an official Host Celebration Site for Alberta Culture Days – will be celebrating fire with fire dancers, a public dance, engaging pottery firing activities, free museum admission and lots of children’s activities (bouncy castles, pedal tractors and more).

If you’re looking for a weekend away, Medicine Hat has a cultural scene that will keep you happy and busy for days.

Water Through fascinating exhibitions, art walks for all ages, live music and public programs, the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre, along with the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program (TREX) and the Medicine Hat Public Library, are celebrating water, its role in the creation of our community and the influence it still exerts over all of us. “From its pristine sources in the Canadian Rockies to its final destination in Lake Winnipeg, the water that flows through Medicine Hat in the South Saskatchewan River provides not only a unique ecosystem for the prairie but sustains our communities physically and creatively.” • http://www.esplanade.ca/riverwater/ All official Culture Days activities (listed on page 8 of this guide) are being offered at NO CHARGE. These activities are engaging, interesting and enriching and everyone is encouraged to participate.

Medalta is the centerpiece of a 150-acre Canadian National Historic Site in Medicine Hat, Canada. The iconic factory and beehive kilns, set against the dramatic clay cliffs of the South Saskatchewan River, inspire artists, visitors, academics and students. Today the factory is a state-ofthe-art contemporary ceramic artist’ studio facility and industrial museum and archaeological dig site. Within the museum is a working pottery where Retro Medalta pottery is made for sale in the gift shop. Medalta is pushing the relatively young field of industrial archaeology forward while using its production capacity and heritage & contemporary gallery spaces to tell the stories of how industry opened up the Canadian West. Visitors, artists and students are welcome year-round. VISIT WWW.MEDALTA.ORG OR CALL 403.529.1070 FOR INFORMATION ON RATES, DIRECTIONS AND MORE

Education

(Yuill Family Gallery & Artists in Residence)

Education over the years has made a fundamental change. Long gone are the methods of lecturing and note-taking. Today, engagement and hands-on experimentation is the key. And Medalta is at the forefront of that change.

Artists are experimenters, looking at new ways of using existing technologies or developing new technologies to solve their own technical problems. Artists today are not primarily focused on the final product. For every piece in an art gallery, there are 100 piled in the corners of studios. It is about the process; the experiments which yield new information. Experiments like these take place every day in Medalta’s contemporary ceramic artists in residence studios. The results of these experiments – often stunning, always intriguing – are displayed in Medalta’s Yuill Family Gallery. This gallery is always opening new exhibitions featuring interesting works of art from our community and around the world.

Medalta’s education programs are based on the Alberta Education Curriculum which means that a field trip to Medalta is not just fun – it’s educational too! Teachers and parents appreciate the fact that core education objectives are being met and students appreciate the opportunity to get their hands dirty through working with clay! Field trips to Medalta are rich, rewarding experiences for everyone and nearly every classroom comes back year after year.

Medalta Pottery Gift Shop The difference between owning a beautiful item made thousands of miles away and owning one made in the community you live near is greater than just the distance. When you can actually get to know the producer, it becomes personal instead of just financial. It gains a much deeper level of meaning when you know the item in your house was made in or near your community. That deep, personal connection happens every day at Medalta. Skilled workers hand-craft iconic pieces of Medalta pottery in an open studio – one you’re encouraged to visit – which are sold only meters away. The clay for these pieces comes from within 100 miles and is mined by Plainsman Clays Ltd., which has been operating locally for decades just a couple blocks from Medalta. In a time when everything seems to come from somewhere else and authenticity seems so hard to find, it is nice to know that at Medalta, our craftspeople are still creating beautiful, high-quality pieces for you. Everything in our Gift Shop is Made Here Now.

The Esplanade is where arts and heritage come to life in Medicine Hat, where the stories of our great collective culture are told through art exhibitions and collections, artifacts, heritage exhibits, music and dance, theatre and more. A marvel of contemporary Canadian architecture on traditional Blackfoot territory just steps from the South Saskatchewan River, the Esplanade occupies an eminent position on downtown’s elegant First Street South. From its rooftop terrace, you can see Saamis, the shoreline escarpment which is the setting for the story of how Medicine Hat was named.Inside, visitors are delighted to discover a vibrant art gallery, a prized museum, an intimate studio theatre, a dynamic education studio, expansive public archives, a 700seat main stage theatre and many volunteers and staff who are eager to tell their versions of our city’s tale. The Esplanade is also the repository for much of our community’s history; the Esplanade Archives, Art Gallery and Museum care for more than 1,000,000 documents and photographs, an impressive Art Collection and more than 25,000 artifacts. Visit www.esplanade.ca or call 403.502.8580 for more information

Where did the name “Esplanade” come from? In the late 1800s, the streets in downtown Medicine Hat had different names. First Street SE (the location of the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre) used to be called “Esplanade Road.” The street names were changed to their current monikers in 1914, but downtown signage now includes the original names . Esplanade (which means “pathway near water”) is actually a popular name for large buildings near water, like resorts, condominiums, hotels and theatres.

Archives Vignette: Life Along The River As compliment to the Museum and Art Gallery exhibits, the Esplanade Archives has curated a short photo and postcard vignette contrasting the two extremes in which the South Saskatchewan River is viewed. To the one side are six images of historical floods, the damage they have caused, and the challenges they have created; to the other are eight colourized postcards, from the 1910s and 1920s, portraying the South Saskatchewan as peaceful and picturesque.

Kathy Mann: Water Paths Art Exhibition August 24, 2013 - October 12, 2013 Esplanade Art Gallery Public Reception with the artists Downtown Art Walk | Alberta Culture Days Friday September 27, 7 PM Kathy Mann works out of her home studio in Medicine Hat, in pastel and oil. She was accepted into the Federation of Canadian Artists in 2005 by a juried process and is a Signature member of the Pastel Artists of Canada; her work has been shown in numerous national exhibitions of both organizations. Her paintings and pastels are presented in Medicine Hat and area at Inspire Gallery and through several annual shows as a member in the Mad Hatters and the Hat Art Club. Her work was selected by jury for exhibition at the Calgary Stampede Western Art Gallery in 2010 and 2011 and the Richeson International Landscape75 exhibition in Wisconsin, USA in 2010. Her work is held in numerous private collections across Canada and in Kenya.

River/Water Art Exhibition August 24, 2013 - October 12, 2013 Esplanade Art Gallery Public Reception with the artists Downtown Art Walk | Alberta Culture Days Friday September 27, 7 PM From its pristine sources in the Canadian Rockies to its final destination in Lake Winnipeg, the water that flows through Medicine Hat in the South Saskatchewan River provides not only a unique ecosystem for the prairie but sustains our communities physically and creatively. This exhibition features contemporary and historical works inspired by water from the Esplanade Art Collection, the Glenbow Museum and the Mendel Art Gallery, along with paintings, video and installation works by a range of prairie artists.

Canada’s Waterscapes September 16, 2013 – February 1, 2014 Esplanade Heritage Gallery Opening Reception Alberta Culture Days Sunday September 29, 3-5 PM The Esplanade Museum arranged with the Canadian Museum of Nature to host the national travelling exhibit “Canada’s Waterscapes” from September 16, 2013 to February 1, 2014. In a colourful, engaging and enlightening manner it informs people about watersheds – what they are, how they work and why they are important. As informed citizens Hatters will be better able to make the decisions necessary to better utilize our most precious resource.

Incorporated into the exhibition are regional historical photographs spanning over 130 years from the Esplanade Archives, including a striking large-scale City and river panorama, and images of several past ‘century’ floods like this year’s, which bring to vivid life the river’s place in our human history. River/Water illuminates the South Saskatchewan River’s many changes through the seasons and the decades, and how it has nurtured people’s hearts and minds and the growth of prairie river communities like Medicine Hat. www.medalta.org/CultureDays | 7

Family Day @ Medalta Saturday, September 28, 2013 10:00am – 4:00pm MEDALTA (713 Medalta Ave SE) Raku firing is an ancient Japanese method of firing pottery. It involves extremely high heat and works incredibly fast. The results of raku firing are beautiful and unexpected, making each piece one-of-a-kind. For Culture Days, Medalta is offering guests the chance to participate in the raku firing process and take home their very own piece of art! You will be able to glaze a piece (which will influence the final product) and give it to an experienced local potter, who will fire it in one of our raku kilns right before your eyes! As you wait for it to cool off (it will quickly reach temperatures over 2,000 degrees F), you will have the opportunity to tour our museum where you will learn the history of industrialism in Western Canada through the lens of major clay production. There will be bouncy castles and pedal tractors for the kids as well as homemade, wood-fired pizza from our very own outdoor wood-fire pizza oven. This is a great way to connect with your family, engage with our local artists and gain a deeper appreciation of Western Canadian heritage.

After your brief, fun lesson, you’ll have the moves to keep up with the music. This is an all-ages event and everyone is welcome!

Tom Willock: Immersed in Waterton Artist talk and reception (organized by TREX) Sunday, September 29, 2013 2:00pm – 3:00pm Medicine Hat Public Library (Honor Currie Room) Immersed in Waterton is a solo exhibition of works by photographer Tom Willock which features eighteen traditional silver gelatin black-and-white prints from two of his earlier series titled The Elements of Wilderness and Images of Waterton Glacier International Peace Park. The photographs express the power of the vastness and beauty of this breathtaking mountain park which straddles the Canada-U.S. border in southern Alberta. The subjects depicted in the images range from frozen cascades to reed-filled ponds and from groupings of delicate maple leaves to forests dense with lodgepole pine. Willock captures a sense of place with each photograph and explores our inherent connection to nature. The images are intimate and intuitive records that are infused with our sense of belonging. Everyone is encouraged to attend this reception to meet former local artist, Tom Willock, during Alberta Culture Days.

Canada’s Waterscapes exhibit reception Sunday, September 29, 2013 3:00pm – 5:00pm Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre (Heritage Gallery) Explore some of Canada’s beautiful waterscapes in this fun, new exhibition. Discover the amazing diversity of life that depends on our aquatic ecosystems. You can follow an imaginary Whooping Crane’s ‘diary’, listen to frog calls, and even create your own ocean sounds! From the Great Lakes to our seashores, we are a nation connected by water. Visit Canada’s Waterscapes and find out how you can help protect our most precious resource. The City of Medicine Hat is in the centre of one of Canada’s few true deserts. We receive less than twelve inches of precipitation a year and are home to cacti and rattlesnakes. As in any desert area, water is a primary concern and people here are well aware of their dependence on the South Saskatchewan River which bisects the community. Please be our guest during Alberta Culture Days and help us celebrate Canada’s waterscapes through this Museum exhibition opening. www.medalta.org/CultureDays | 11
