On behalf of all members of Medicine Hat City Council, I’d like to say how gratifying it is to see the growth and expansion of Medalta in the Historic Clay District of Medicine Hat. In this, Medalta’s Centennial year, it’s the perfect time for everyone to visit and take a closer look at one of the industries that established Medicine Hat as an industrial center in Western Canada. Brick, pottery and sewer pipe formed the original backbone of this city in the beginning of the Twentieth Century and now we welcome visitors from all over the world looking to reconnect with this interesting past. Congratulations on achieving this important milestone and to the many businesses and residents who have worked tirelessly to present the Medalta story, we thank you for all your efforts and we take pride in this wonderful facility.

Not only should we be celebrating the great industrial heritage of our City, but also the vision of the Friends of Medalta, who have helped pave the way for this wonderful hub of arts and culture in the Historic Clay District. It is where we can come together to pass on stories and knowledge to our children and grandchildren so they can share our pride in the history of our City. Over the past 18 years I have had the privilege of serving as your MLA. I would like to commend the dedication of the volunteers putting in thousands of hours and raising millions of dollars to restore this industrial icon in Medicine Hat. It has been an inspiration to us all.

Greeting from the Chair, Friends of Medealta Society When Medalta Potteries began operations in 1912 as the Medicine Hat Pottery Company, no one could have imagined that it would one day be a leading centre for heritage preservation and contemporary ceramic art. The men and women who once worked in this factory probably didn’t think that the work they were doing had significance beyond their own lives. But it did. We have recently completed an archaeological dig which – as you will read on page 4 – has solidified Medicine Hat’s place as a leader in the emerging field of Historic Industrial Archaeology. That’s a rarity – especially in Western Canada, which is a very young region – and is something of which I feel all Hatters & Canadians should be proud. This work will significantly add to our museum and education programming, leading to a deeper level of understanding and connection to our heritage. The Shaw International Centre for Contemporary Ceramics is quickly building a reputation as a true international ceramic arts centre. We currently have two artists from the United States and one from Germany in our studios, along with artists from across Canada. Everyone who attends a residency at Medalta has an innovative spirit which contributes a great deal to the world we all share. These people are finding ways to reduce our carbon footprint through experimenting with new clay bodies and finding creative, useful ways to re-use and recycle old pottery. They’re reaching back out to the world in new and imaginative ways and helping us create better communities for everyone. Thank you to everyone who has been involved with Medalta over the last 100 years. Whether you want to hold your own event at Medalta, order personalized Medalta coffee mugs, attend a Shaw Centre Open House, Artist Talk or any of our interesting and informative workshops, we encourage you and your friends to become connected with us. In fall 2010, the Friends of Medalta Society contracted an archaeologist to conduct a scientific examination of Medalta’s original kiln room. The building – which is a century old in 2012 – was the original envelope for three dome-shaped, beehivestyle kilns, which were demolished in the 1960’s. The physical work of conducting the archaeological dig was completed in spring 2011 and revealed six kiln foundations in all: four circular downdraft kilns (commonly referred to as beehive kilns), one portion of a tunnel kiln foundation and one small muffle kiln, which was likely used as a test kiln. The project provided valuable information to the emerging field of industrial archaeology and spotlighted the need to have serious discussions about industrial archaeology’s place in academia. This is all fairly involved stuff for a museum and National Historic Site which was essentially an unknown, even within its own community.

It demonstrated, in a very systematic and empirical way, that facilities such as these which have been targeted for demolition across the country for decades do have value. In the case of Medalta, it validates all the work done by the Friends of Medalta Society over the past 26 years. With the scientific community beginning to look at and eventually use data uncovered here, it encourages the community to refocus on heritage preservation. Not for the sake of nostalgia (which is an assumed, and often misguided, way of addressing the issue), but for the sake of scientific advancement. Currently, there is relatively little information on industrial archaeology – especially in Canada. With this archaeological dig complete, Medalta has staked a claim among the earliest sites to contribute solid scientific data to this emerging scientific discipline. This data will serve as a baseline for further studies across the country and possibly into the United States. Scholars from across North America will be looking to Medalta and Medicine Hat to be leaders in this emerging field. One of the common mis-perceptions about the loose term “heritage preservation” is that it saves old sites in depressed parts of our communities which would be better off being re-developed. This project – and the entire Medalta project in general – shows specifically why heritage preservation is important. Heritage preservation isn’t about saving derelict buildings. It’s about providing opportunities for scientific advancement. Medicine Hat’s Historic Clay District holds over a century’s worth of important scientific data which, when uncovered, will continue to propel this community further into the future.

The Medalta International Artists in Residence Program is designed to serve artists at all stages of their careers. Students, emerging and established artists are able to work together in our open, spacious, semiprivate studios for a time between one month and one year. The purpose of this residency is to allow an artist the extended period of time to develop their work, all while becoming part of the Medicine Hat community. Throughout the year, this core group of eight artists further their explorations in our spacious, semi-private studios. Throughout the year, we host artists’ talks, studio open houses and other events to encourage our visiting artists to connect with the community. If you’re interested in attending one of these free events, upcoming dates are listed in the calendar in this program guide as well as online.

Artists have 24 hour access to all ceramic equipment such as slab rollers, extruders, ball mills, blungers and a digital ceramic decal printer. There is a soda kiln, a salt kiln, a large gas car kiln, 7 electric kilns, and a wood kiln. There is a waterfall spray booth, fully stocked glaze lab with task area ventilation, a plaster area, showers, washer and dryer, a resource library, kitchen and meeting room

historic CLAY DISTRICT Medalta Society and in 1995 it was named a Provincial Historic Resource.
A large part of Medicine Hat’s story is about the early industrialization of Alberta. That history begins with our community’s clay industries, including Hycroft China and the Medicine Hat Brick & Tile plant, in addition to Medalta. Hycroft China Hycroft China was founded in 1937 by Harry Yuill as Medicine Hat Potteries Ltd and quickly emerged as Medalta’s main competitor – both for customers and staff. As the story goes, one of Medalta’s best employees demanded a raise to 50¢ per hour or he too was going to leave for a similar position at Hycroft China. Lucky him, he got the raise he asked for. The factory changed hands several times, eventually being acquired by local businessman and Medicine Hat’s Mayor – Harry Veiner – in 1957, who operated it until it finally closed for good in 1989. In 1992 it was acquired by the Friends of
Although closed to the public, the Friends of Medalta Society plans to restore the facility, which sits within the 150-acre Historic Clay District – a National Historic Site in its own right. Medicine Hat Brick & Tile The Brick & Tile site is an important part of Medicine Hat’s heritage. With over a century of history dating back to 1886 it is believed to be one of the oldest continuously operating industrial sites in Alberta until the flood of June 2010 forced the plant to cease operations. In December 2011, the Medicine Hat Brick & Tile site was acquired by the Friends of Medalta Society from I-XL Industries Ltd., who had owned and operated it since 1929. The vision for the site includes tours of the historic brick plant, the re-creation of a soft mud brick interpretive site, which will explain the brick-making process as it was done in the late 19th Century, as well as residence facilities for visiting artists to Medalta’s International Artists in Residence program.

CERAMICS NOW Come down to the Shaw Centre International Centre for Contemporary Ceramics for this free day of workshops with our resident artists. POTTERY DANCE AT MEDALTA **** When Medalta employees weren’t working in the factory, they liked to get their dance on with what came to be known as Pottery Dances. These dances took place after hours, at Medalta. And they were fun! As part of our Centennial celebrations, we’re bringing this tradition back. ARTISANAL BREAD AND THE WOOD-FIRED OVEN Bread is a simple process. Mix flour with water, add a leavening agent (like yeast) and some salt; then knead, rest, form and bake. Simple and yet open to a myriad of interpretations. Artisanal breads, made with yeasted pre-ferments, then baked in a wood-fired oven, provide a richer, more complex crumb and crust. They also provide a satisfaction of feeding both the heart and the home. Red-Seal Chef and Artisanal Baker, Elizabeth Mahony, has been enlisted to provide a weekend introduction to the ease of making the perfect loaf. Elizabeth will guide the bread-lo(a)ver, through the use of three types of dough production: ■ The “straight dough” method ■ Poolish as a pre-ferment ■ Pate Fermente as a pre-ferment Each dough will be prepared and then baked in the form of a flat-bread and as a loaf in Medalta’s bread kiln: Pizza, Fougasse, Focaccia, Raisin Pecan, the Mighty Oat and Roasted Potato and Onion Bread. PICKLING WORKSHOPS In this workshop, participants will learn how to make delicious pickles from scratch with Joanne Smith of the Big Cook Cookbook. All ingredients will be sourced locally and will be stored in Medicine Hat-made Medalta crocks, adding an extra level to the term “locally made.” Joanne Smith is one of the authors of the bestselling Big Cook cookbook. And she writes a column for the Medicine Hat News. ALBERTA ARTS DAYS AT MEDALTA We have grown this event every year since it began in 2008 and this year is no different. Visitors to this Medalta Signature event will again be able to take in our annual Raku Fest where you’ll be able to choose a piece of ceramic work, glaze it yourself and have it fired so you can take it home that day. You’ll also be able to participate in short, interesting workshops and other activities as we celebrate arts & culture in Medicine Hat. Saturday, September 29

BLACK & WHITE GALA The second annual Fundraising gala & auction is one of four Medalta Signature events. In our first year, we received enormous support from the community with Rotary International acting as the title sponsor and a number of others graciously sponsoring the event. As we plan for 2012, we want to take the time to thank all the community sponsors who made this event such a success. When the dust settled on a very successful and exciting evening, we had raised nearly $50,000 which was directed towards our community, education and artistic programming. As we celebrate our Centennial in 2012, we’re looking forward to making this event even better. Silent auction items have already been donated by visiting Medalta artists and we’re working on some very exciting live auction items as well.
