Message from Honorable Alison M. Redford, QC Premier of Alberta On behalf of the Government of Alberta, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone to the Methanex Black and White Gala and fund raiser in support of Medalta’s Artistic, Community and Education programming. Since 1986, the friends of Medalta Society has striven to foster an understanding and appreciation of the Medicine Hat Clay Industries National Historic District, its importance in the development of Medicine Hat and its impact across Canada. By attending tonight’s gala and art auction, you are supporting exceptional artistic and cultural programming in the Medalta Potteries National Historic Site. Devoting your time and talents to this cultural treasure will have an enduring impact on this community and beyond. Thank you to all of the corporate sponsors, artists and volunteers who have contributed to make tonight’s Gala a memorable one, and to all of those in attendance whose community support of this event makes it such a success! Best wishes for an enjoyable Gala!

Alison M. Redford, QC October 26th, 2013

Greetings from the Board and Executive Director, Thank you for attending Medalta’s Methanex Black & White Gala. This is now our third year coming together to raise funds for our Artistic, Community and Education programs which expose thousands to Western Canada’s industrial heritage and some of the most creative minds in the world. This year – thanks in large part to your support of Medalta through the Black & White Gala – we have been able to introduce some wonderful new programs. Our First Annual International Cup Show received over 450 submissions from 10 different countries and was supported generously by the Medicine Hat College. This year we were also able to bring a group of professional South East Asian artists to Medicine Hat for a one-month residency in our contemporary ceramics studios at the Shaw Centre. The pottery we make was mentioned in a National Geographic Society series called “Canada’s 50 Places of a Lifetime”, while our pottery production, education programs and museum all continued to grow in popularity. Of course, like most of the River Flats neighbourhood, we were affected by this year’s flood. With luck, determination, and planning, our programming was essentially untouched. The museum was closed for two weeks while all hands were on deck, working hard to re-open our doors. We are thankful for everyone who contributes to making Medalta an important, one-of-a-kind cultural hub for our community. Welcome to the Methanex Black & White Gala. This is an evening to celebrate arts & culture in Medicine Hat and take an active role in moving it forward. Sincerely,

Dave Sherwood Friends of Medalta Society Chair

Methanex is pleased to be the title sponsor of the Black and White Gala at Medalta. As an industrial company that uses natural gas as feedstock, we recognize the significance of ensuring Medicine Hat’s rich natural gas-based industrial development is retained and retold for generations. The Medicine Hat clay industries formed one of Western Canada’s earliest and largest industries providing livelihoods for many of Medicine Hat’s early families. Thanks to the efforts of the Friends of Medalta and countless volunteers and staff, not only is the 150-acre site being preserved and restored, but it is advancing as a world-class cultural hub. Through field trips and education programming in the industrial museum, children, local residents and visitors can walk along the same path as the men and women who worked in the factories. We’re proud to help support Medalta as it continues to showcase the people and industry that helped make Medicine Hat!
