1. Introduction (Functional & Spatial Criterion) Our proposal for the new MNIR is born from two ambivalent relations. On the one hand there is a need to preserve and display the valuable fabric of the old Palace of the Post, and, at the same time to refurbish the building into a modern institution setting, a platform capable to bring together different entities in order to research, expose and debate upon Romanian History. On the other hand, there is a need to create a visible, active and well defined city node and at the same time a porous environment capable to attract urban fluxes. The core of the project lies in the interior covered courtyard, acting both as a public space and as a horizontal and vertical distribution space. The courtyard together with the foyer will be a no ticket space, encouraging an Est-West axis linking Calea Victoriei with the Old City Center area through a line containing the main entrance portico, the courtyard placed column replica and the secondary visitors accesses from the Postei street. L0_18 2. Museographic Proposal (Museographic Criterion) The museographic display will try to concentrate on rather histories than on History with capital ‘H’, on a continuously changing domain compatible to micronaratives. The visiting path starts with the Treasure collection, kept on the same spot of the Victoriei basement, as an enclosed and protected chest, and continues with the medals collection. From here the path goes to the main exhibition, starting with the copy of the frieze, on the terrace from the first floor. The exhibitions develop in a chronological sequence on the two upper floors, taking advantage of the circular path possible only at the first floor. Along this path the old aula and the central areas of Postei and Franceza wing will be the main spatial attractions, containing three key exhibitions: Spirituality and Funerary Practices, The Antiquity exhibition and the Medieval exhibition. As an iconic figure for the collection, the Thinker of Hamagia and his Wife, will take the main role of this layout, being placed in an elaborated scenographic setting of the restored double high aula. The existing side stairway in the Stavropoleos wing will finish the visiting L0_17 to the foyer through the gift shop. In the ground floor’s foyer, the city of loop by arriving back Bucharest and MNIR history exhibitions are placed as first impression exhibitions. In addition, in the Franceza street lay the three temporary exhibitions, capitalizing on the well preserved decorated rooms. In the center of this wing a street level display window will be visible from the as an interaction point for both visitors and passer-bies. 3. Restorative Proposal (Heritage Criterion) During its history, by several transformations and successive partitions, the old Post started to lose its initial clarity. Our approach begins with a process of selection of valuable and nonvaluable building elements, trying to regain atmospheric qualities by revealing the main spaces and volumes, displaying at the same time elements from the main construction periods. We focused ourselves on the clearing of the entrance foyer and the two ground floor lateral aisles, the first floor aula, the main volume of Postei street, and the second floor central volume of the 15 Franceza street. A special care we kept to restore and reveal the historic skylights in order L0_ to enrich and embellish the exhibitions. As a general principle we didn’t touch any of the existing roof metal structures conserving them as historical artefacts. We tried to have the same respectL0_ for16the old fabric by detaching as much as possible the new courtyard structures from the existing building. Regarding the facades we propose only conservation measures for both stone and plaster, and changing all plastic frames into wood ones similar to the initial geometry. 4. Urban Design Proposal (Urban Design Criterion) Because of the historic development of the city the typical western European plaza is hard to find in Bucharest, public space being made not by the power of consensus but rather by the power of individual additive gestures. As the rejuvenated Old City Center shows, there is a need for new urban spaces to have a dialogue and manifest as a community. So we cleared the old concrete building from the courtyard, covered it, opened the two portals and put several independent functions (cafeteria, restaurant, auditorium, cafe) in order to invite people to use the museum also as a meeting point. Letting free big open spaces calls for future events to take place. 5. Structure Proposal (Structural Criterion) The new structure is detached by the old one, being a 3 story high underground pit composed by 2 rigid concrete boxes and a rectangular regular 7.5m grid of square columns, concrete made in the basement and steel made until the top of the roof. The shape tries to unify the very heterogeneous silhouette of the courtyard both in plan and section, covering the courtyard with a network of beams a with a lowered canopy like roof towards the two portals from the Franceza street. The structure simulates a hipostyle hall, downscaling the space, and favouring frames over general perspectives. We also have chosen a grid due to lower costs, ease to build locally and functional practicality (for the basement storages levels) reasons. 6. Management Plan (Economic Criterion) Until completion of the building we imagine a 10 step plan in order to have a fully functional museum during the construction period. Having a working reduced ground floor area museum by Romania’s 2018 centenary is our first goal, by restoring interiors on Victoriei and the two lateral aisles, hosting the entire final administration surface, main entrance and foyer, and spaces for a downscaled collection that will turn into the temporary exhibition in the final step. Building concomitantly both the museum institution and the building while receiving revenues would be ideal for our 10 step scenario.

Until completion of the building we imagine a 10 step plan in order to have a fully functional museum during the construction period. Having a working reduced ground floor area museum by Romania’s 2018 centenary is our first goal, by restoring interiors on Victoriei and the two lateral aisles, hosting the entire final administration surface, main entrance and foyer, and spaces for a downscaled collection that will turn into the temporary exhibition in the final step.

FRIEZE KINGS AND QUEENS 1881-1918 THE THINKER

In order to provide the institution with a functional headquarters as soon as possible and especially to celebrate the Centenary of the Romanian Great Union (1918-2018) the groundfloor of Victoria’s, Franceza’s, Stavropoleos’s wings and the tezaur area (in the first basement) can be completed till 2018. This whole area will be refurbished and refunctionalized with the definitive functions. The spaces eventually dedicated to the temporary exhibitions can be used by 2018 to showcase some of the main items of the MNIR collections.

INNER COURT The new structure is detached by the old one, being a 3 story high underground pit composed by 2 rigid concrete boxes and a rectangular regular 7.5m grid of square columns, concrete made in the basement and steel made until the top of the roof. The shape tries to unify the very heterogeneous silhouette of the courtyard both in plan and section, covering the courtyard with a network of beams a with a lowered canopy like roof towards the two portals from the Franceza street. The structure simulates a hipostyle hall, downscaling and fragmenting the space favouring frames over general perspectives.

The frieze is placed on the terrace on top of the atrium, having a direct visual connection with the courtyard (the Trajan column), but the acces over there is allowed only by buying a ticket, while the column can be visited for free. The pieces are placed on suspended and single-standing panels, oriented on transverse direction who generate the connection between the courtyard and the old building. This is also the place where the main collection starts, the frieze becoming an important part in the curatorial path.

The exhibition is divided in three main subthemes: The Romanian Kingdom 1881-1914, WWI and The Great Union, the space being divided according to those themes. The separation is made at a perceptive level through panels which are defining the path and serve at the same time as racks for photos, maps and other documents from the collection. The collection has an easy to understand layout, free standing objects define the main focus points while in depth information and secondary objects lay on the partition walls, giving the choice to the visitor to accumulate succesive layers of information. This open plan favours multiple choice paths for the visitor giving each person the possibility to deliniate its own personal path.

A2 SOCIAL SPACE

The old aula accomodates three key exhibitions of the museum: Spirituality and Funeral Space, Metallurgy Production and deposition and The Social Space - object and context. The central point of the exhibition is the Thinker and his Wife, situated in the center of the aula, right under the newly refurbished skylight. The three exhibitions are organised in smaller areas, according to the subthemes of each collection. The exhibitions are also related to the ones preceding and following the aula, so that the visitors are offered several Competition alternatives of accesing the space and can have personal experiences of understanding the space and the collections. The Thinker can be seen at a first glance, being the focal point of a frontal perspective, but can be reached only indirectly through the adjacent rooms. The room is furnished with double function objects used at the same time as showcases and benches giving the space a warmer atmosphere. The old architecture of the building was used to generate some alcoves where important objects of the collection are put into the light and also the cursive has two functions, it protects the people and objects under it and highlights the Thinker.
