Shooting i A
merican and European producers have ventured into Chile to shoot their films. From James Bond to Che Guevara, they traversed the Chilean land, finding here human resources, technicians and locations for their productions. In 2003, producer Robert Redford and director Walter Salles were in charge of bringing “The Motorcycle Diaries” into a film –a story about the journey of the medical student Ernesto Guevara, before he took part in the Cuban revolution. The production traveled five Latin American countries; Chile was among them. A team coming from Argentina shot for 24 days, using 21 Chilean actors in sequences varying from dance to chase scenes. Lautaro, Freire and Temuco in the south of Chile, Valparaíso in the central region, and Calama in the northern Atacama Desert, were the chosen locations to illustrate the passing of Che Guevara through the Chilean land. According to assistant director Samuel León, director Walter Salles “was pleasantly surprised with the quality of actors and the professionalism of the Chilean crew.” This wasn’t the first time it happened: for decades Chile has been chosen as a location for its privileged and untamed landscapes. Easter Island, Puerto Saavedra, Valdivia, Santiago, Melipilla, Valparaíso, Chiloé, Chillán, Arica, Antofagasta, Iquique y Punta Arenas has been selected for shootings.
However, during the last decade the local industry has been preparing to be in the condition to host foreign productions. This was the case with the 25th film of the James Bond saga, “Quantum of Solace”, a 230 million dollars production directed by Marc Forster, a part of which was shot in locations in the north of Chile –one of them was the world famous Paranal astronomical observatory. Even the poster image of the film is precisely a picture of the leads walking in the Chilean desert. Another privileged witness of the Chilean experience is the Academy Award winning Spanish director Fernando Trueba – “Belle Époque”, Best Foreign Language Film, 1993– who decided to shoot his last feature film in Chile. “El baile de la victoria” (“The dancer and the thief”) is not only based in the novel of a Chilean writer, it occurs in Chile and follows the wanderings of local characters looking for a place in the world. Starring Ricardo Darín (“El secreto de sus ojos” [“The secret in their eyes”]) the film was shot between September and November 2009, being nominated this year to nine Goya Awards, and becoming the Spanish candidate for Best Foreign Language Film in the Academy Awards 2010. All those who have shooting here agree in what Chile has to offer: unexplored landscapes, local talent and first-class professionals.

roductores de Estados Unidos y Europa han venido hasta Chile para filmar sus películas. Desde 007 hasta el Che Guevara han pasado por territorio chileno y acá han encontrado recursos humanos, técnicos y locaciones para sus producciones. En el 2003, el productor Robert Redford y el director Walter Salles fueron los encargados de llevar al cine “Diario de motocicletas” (“The Motorcycle Diaries”), una película sobre el viaje iniciático que realizó el médico Ernesto Guevara antes de sumarse a la guerrilla cubana. La producción se implementó en cinco países de América Latina, entre ellos Chile, donde un equipo que salió desde Argentina filmó 24 jornadas y utilizó a 21 actores chilenos en secuencias que incluyeron desde escenas de baile hasta persecuciones. Lautaro, Freire y Temuco en el sur, además de Valparaíso en la zona central y Calama en el desierto, fueron las ciudades elegidas para ilustrar el paso del Che Guevara por territorio chileno. Según Samuel León, asistente de dirección de la cinta, el director Walter Salles “quedó gratamente impresionado con la calidad de los actores y el profesionalismo de los técnicos chilenos”. No es primera vez que pasaba: desde hace décadas que Chile es seleccionado para filmaciones por sus paisajes privilegiados e indómitos. Isla de Pascua, Puerto Saavedra, Valdivia, Santiago, Melipilla, Valparaíso, Chiloé, Chillán, Arica, Antofagasta,
Iquique y Punta Arenas han sido localidades objeto de rodaje. Sin embargo, desde hace sólo unos años la industria local se ha preparado para estar en condiciones de recibir producciones extranjeras. Tal fue el caso de “Quantum of Solace”, la 25º película de James Bond, una producción de 230 millones de dólares dirigida por Marc Forster. Parte de su producción se filmó en locaciones en el norte de Chile, como el mundialmente conocido Observatorio Astronómico de Paranal. La imagen promocional de la cinta es precisamente una fotografía de los protagonistas caminando por el desierto de Chile. Otro testigo privilegiado de la experiencia chilena es Fernando Trueba, director español ganador del Oscar a la Mejor Película Extranjera por “Belle Époque” y que decidió filmar su última cinta en Chile. “El baile de la victoria” no sólo está basada en la novela de un escritor chileno: transcurre en Chile y sigue el derrotero de personajes de estas tierras que intentan encontrar un lugar en el mundo. Protagonizada por Ricardo Darín (“El secreto de sus ojos”) la cinta se filmó entre septiembre y noviembre de 2009 y fue nominada este año a nueve Premios Goya, además de ser la opción española de Mejor Película Extranjera para el premio Oscar 2010. Quienes filman en Chile concuerdan en lo que ofrece el país: paisajes inexplorados, talento local y profesionales de primer nivel.

Synopsis An uninhabited island lies across a fishermen’s cove on the south of Chile. Synopsis Lucía is a young woman who works as a sewer in a factory, and lives with her father in an old house in Santiago, Chile. Synopsis In Chile, at three thousand metres altitude, astronomers from all over the world gather together in the Atacama desert to observe the stars. Synopsis Iselsa and Cathy have been offered a dream: to be part of an innovative social housing project in Valparaiso, an old port on the central coast of Chile. They were chosen, together with 150 other families, to leave their homes on illegally possessed land and live in the heart of a middle class neighbourhood. As they struggle to ensure the construction of their homes, their new neighbours oppose them; they brand them delinquents – people of low morals who will put their homes and the neighbourhood at risk. From the windows of their homes, the middle class community observe the large blocks of buildings being constructed and wait in fear of their new neighbours. Over five years, the documentary records the achievements and setbacks of a social housing project which has won important international awards. “74 square metres” is the story of that social experiment from the perspective of these women pursuing the dream of a better life. During her quest, she decides to rebuild the family picture albums, stolen during the 1973 coup in Chile. This is the first time that a direct relative of the ex President wants to recover family memoirs, to look for personal gestures, photographs, unedited videos. A story of details, that until now have been invisible, that talks about the memories, identity and family. Synopsis Naomi Kawase is a well-known Japanese filmmaker whose films awe audiences all over the world. Él necesita descubrir quién es esta persona que cuenta historias tan íntimas y perturbadoras. Su narrativa lo inspira a viajar a Japón. Synopsis Towards the end of the seventies, the militants of MIR exiled in Europe, decided to return to Chile in order to support the fight against the military dictatorship. The ones who could would help through legal means, others through clandestinity. Many had children and couldn’ t return with them. So the idea of a community center to shelter these children was born. Project Home gathered 60 kids that were left to the care of 20 people who assumed the responsibility of their upbringing for the years to come. A fines de los años 70’, los militantes del Movimiento de Izquierda Revolucionaria (MIR) exiliados en Europa regresaron a Chile a luchar clandestinamente contra la dictadura. Muchos de esos militantes tenían hijos que no podrían llevar con ellos. Para esos hijos nació el Proyecto Hogares, un espacio de vida comunitaria que reunió cerca de 60 niños que fueron cuidados por 20 adultos llamados Padres Sociales.

Synopsis The mother left Chile for Venezuela, 26 years ago. Her two children never saw her again. The mother disappeared in the family silence. Her only physical legacy was a small library of books from Quimantú, (the national publishing company during Allende) which were forbidden during the Chilean military dictatorship. The children have grown up: the daughter is now an archivist and the son is a filmmaker. They will try to understand and repair, give a body to the voice they hear in the phone when her mother reappears, and cast away the spell of the phantasmal member of the family. La madre partió de Chile con destino a Venezuela hace 26 años y sus dos hijos nunca volvieron a verla. La madre desapareció en el silencio familiar. Su única herencia física fue una pequeña biblioteca compuesta de libros de la editorial nacional Quimantú, libros que fueron quemados y prohibidos durante la dictadura militar chilena. Synopsis A circus of homosexuals has been touring around Chile for the last 40 years, setting up in cities and towns with its drag queen show. The creator of the circus is the legendary comedian Timoteo. The circus has served as a refuge for a whole community, in which they not only perform as artists, but where they also carry on their day-to-day lives feeling the acceptance of the nomadic clan led by Timoteo. The documentary portrays the life of the comedian as the artists and circus workers try to support him at a crucial time: his health and his age have produced uncertainty about the future of the particular world he has created for himself and the members of his circus. Synopsis Even though I was only 7 years old I remember details of that night, the year 1985, in which my father received a phone call from Lima. It was about Sybila, my aunt, whom I hadn’t seen since our return to Chile. From that night on, her name to me was forever related with the words: prison, terrorist, Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path). Neither my mother nor my father ever explained anything. As the years went by I became a silent witness of the enormous efforts that my grandmother made in Santiago and my cousin Carolina in Lima, in trying to get Sybila out of prison. I only visited her once. I was afraid and didn’t know what we would have to talk about. I never saw her again until she reached Chile after she was finally liberated and expulsed from Peru after her 15-year sentence. Today Sybila lives a placid life in France. The place that she chose as her journey’s end is the place that I use to start this film. Ask and understand. Search and tell the tale of the search. The story involves different generations. “Sybila and I” is the tale of a family and a part of Latin American history today. Aunque sólo tenía 7 años, recuerdo detalles de esa noche de 1985, en que mi padre recibió una llamada desde Lima. Se trata de Sybila, mi tía, a la que no veo desde nuestro regreso a Chile. A partir de esa noche, su nombre se vinculó en mi memoria con las palabras: cárcel, terrorista y Sendero Luminoso. Ni mi padre, ni mi madre, me explicaron nada. Pasaron los años y crecí siendo testigo mudo, de los grandes esfuerzos de mi abuela en Santiago y mi prima Carolina en Lima, que luchaban por sacar a Sybila de prisión. Sólo una vez la visité en la cárcel, fui con miedo y sin saber de qué podía hablar con ella. No volví a verla, sino hasta que llegó a Chile, habiendo sido liberada y expulsada de Perú, tras cumplir una condena de 15 años. Hoy, Sybila, vive apaciblemente en Francia. Allí donde parece detener su viaje, yo comienzo a filmar este documental. Preguntar y entender. Buscar y narrar esa búsqueda.
