Why did you choose Calabria and what binds you to this land?

I came to Calabria about 4 years ago to follow the story of a judge corrupted by the Mafia. He was convicted of mafia association. He gave me his last interview. A good feeling developed between us. Shortly after the final sentence he committed suicide. To fully document the story, I decided to go to the funeral and discovered a beautiful land, a welcoming people, a tribal culture that fascinated me.

How many are the Calabrian mafia fugitives?

It is difficult to make an estimate of this kind. Those of important families are few except for Rocco Morabito Bruzzaniti who escaped from Uruguayan prisons. In total, no more than 20 people.

What differences with other Italian mafias?

The Ndrangheta has a family structure. Very different from the other mafias. It is able to fit into the institutions and think like a political party. It looks a lot like the South American narcos rather than the Italian mafias, because it makes you believe it has an institutional role, close to the poor and the needy and instead exploits them.

Why did you decide to be politically active in Calabria?

Because nobody wanted to be a candidate in San Luca. There was no mayor for 11 years due to the mafia infiltration. I decided to do it to give a signal of commitment. However, I come from political commitment. My generation was the last one to feel the influence of the movement of 1968.

You have been attacked by gangs?

Yes, on social media. But above all with complaints. They ask for money for the articles I write. My house in Archi, Reggio Calabria, was the object of vandalism but the investigations are ongoing.

Why do we still talk about the Mafia in the 2000s?

Because through the drug business it spreads over many economic and social sectors. It has become a multinational

What does the Calabrese mafia represent in business?

A very important slice especially in sectors such as construction, energy and tourism.

Who are the main bosses of the Calabrian mafia today and what are their names?

There are several and they are distributed in the territories. They range from Rocco Morabito to Giovanni Luca Nirta, from Antonio Piromalli to Carmine De Stefano.

How does their business?

Drugs, extortion.

How can we Italians of America, contribute to your journalistic battle?

They can do this by reporting the presence of Ndrangheta families in the territory. Report to me their commercial activities. Restaurants, pubs for example.

Someone has entered Klaus Davi’s home in Archi (Reggio Calabria). After breaking a stained glass window, unknown people taking advantage of his absence entered Klaus Davi’s house, in Reggio Calabria.

“I don’t even think about leaving my house in Reggio Calabria. I think instead the “Ndrangheta is experiencing a moment of difficulty. The state has dealt blows and the clans there are now forty-year-olds bosses who are struggling to impose themselves for lack of “criminal charisma”. What is completely missing here is the presence of politics and institutions. If whe talk about inequality, politics is never seen here. She’s missing. The left party said to start again from the suburbs? For the right party the mafia is of little interest, they only speak of migrants. Result: solitude and desolation but we do not give up”.

Klaus Davi is a 52 years old renowned Italian journalist and media expert. He was born in Switzerland to Italian parents and raised in Germany. Since 2014 he is reporting from Calabria. Ossigeno per l’informazione interviewed him about the aggressions, warnings and threats he suffers there to today, since he began to complete and spread his journalistic investigations on television. His work is in many ways original, moving around the territory to explore and highlight this great contradiction. Davi, observing things, listens and talks to everyone, he also gives a voice to people tied to the ‘Ndrine (clans) and attends their meetings. This close interaction above all challenges the pretence of the ‘Ndrangheta which attempts to remove itself from the limelight. Davi’s observations show unseen aspects, revealing that the scale of ‘clan values’, their unshakeable principles and their own family relationships are less solid and unshakeable than believed.
