The Call of the
Classic Are you hankering for the open road, the wind in your face, the roar of an engine beneath you? Do you miss the days when British manufacturing really was great, and our biking industry was world famous? If so, then maybe a classic bike is for you. If you know your way around a bike then owning, restoring, repairing and, ultimately loving a classic could be just what you need. Make no mistake; this will be a labour of love. You may well be stuck on the roadside, in the pouring rain, trying to stick a spanner in the most inaccessible place on your machine. You will spend hours on the phone trying to track down an elusive part. You will be all consumed by your new hobby to the detriment of your relationship with family and friends, who may not be able to see quite the same beauty in that rusting piece of junk as you do. A whole new world will however open up to you. Perfect strangers will now come up and talk to you about your pipes or spokes; you will be offered roadside assistance by

fellow enthusiasts who will gladly take the rainlashing in order to get you and your ‘lady’ back on the road. You will need to devote time to your classic. The tinkering possibilities are infinite. The satisfaction of stripping, repairing and rebuilding a proper bike and then trusting your own work at high speeds is something that’s hard to describe. Even with the ever-reliable Japanese bikes from the 70s and 80s, there are plenty of options for modifying and improving them. One word of caution though: keep parts original otherwise it will affect the bike’s value. The classic bike enthusiast’s mantra is always ‘leave it standard’. Many classic motorbikes are owned by men, ahem, of a certain age, who are only now able to realise their dream of owning the bike that their teenage/ twenty-something dreams were made of. They can now enjoy their Yamaha TZ750 or the Kawasaki GPz750 to their hearts’ content without having to bankrupt themselves. They may be able to again buy an LC power-valve and relive their youth. They can show their sons exactly what they’ve been banging on about all these years when they said “they don’t make them like they used to”. The aficionados of the great British marques such as BSA, Triumph, Norton, Vincent and so on are well catered for with a plethora of racing and meeting clubs. With one of these old British
classics, the likelihood is you will spend many more hours in the garage than on the open road. This does not put off the hardcore though, who will regularly meet to swap parts and anecdotes. There is a very strong camaraderie in the world of vintage motorbikes, and many are members of racing clubs. Riding on the track is an excellent way to let your bike show its mettle, which is safer and more fun than on the highways. Plus there’s always the added bonus of having friends with spares close by to help you out with the inevitable breakdown. Only a true bike lover will understand the devotion of time and money given to a classic. They will tell you it’s all about the character of the machine, the fact that more skill is needed in riding them and the satisfaction of fixing it when it breaks. It really is the stuff of a Boys Own dream come true.

Track Days Track riding is excellent fun and highly addictive. Many riders see it as an opportunity to get their machine onto the tarmac and push it, and themselves, to their very limits. Getting the fastest possible speed is of course a huge thrill, but there is more to a track day than simply speed. A day on circuit also has the benefits of placing you in a properly safe environment to learn about your bike, how it handles and its limits. It will also be a fine test of your riding, giving you an opportunity to take the time to practice new techniques without street obstacles, slippery fuel on the road or too much other traffic should you run wide. If this is your first booked track day, take it easy. Start with the beginners group, as you can usually move up through the groups during your days riding and you will be able to get a real feel for the track and how it is run. There will be strict rules which you must adhere to, these are set for your safety and the safety of those around you, so make sure you listen carefully at the initial briefing and take note. If you do not, you may find you are asked to finish your days ride which would be a shame.
When you book, take the time to research requirements such as: • Clothing. Most tracks require a full one piece set of leathers, or a two piece firmly zipped together. Check for any helmet regulations, and if their website isn’t clear, do ring and ask, especially if you are travelling some distance to attend. No one wants to be turned away. • Start time. Arrive in plenty of time to be prepared so that you can take proper notice of the briefing without rushing and get a feel for the track and its organisers. • Flags. When you listen to the briefing, make sure you fully understand the flag system in place to avoid any mishaps later on. • Your sighting lap. It is your opportunity to feel out the corners and get a handle on distances. Use it wisely, concentrate and think your way round. • Speed. The track is definitely the right place to test your mettle, and that of your bike, but don’t get cocky. Stick to the overtaking rules explained in the briefing, and don’t race. • Home. Don’t forget to take some time out at the end of the day if you will be riding home – it can be easy to slip into bad track style habits out on the open road which with traffic and rather different conditions can be very dangerous indeed.

Track Schools & Race Schools There is a big difference between a Track Day and a Race School. There are a number of race schools around the UK at which you will experience new riding techniques and get to push yourself and your bike to new limits under the expert tuition of some of the very best riders in the country. Each Track or Race school will have its own philosophy, teaching techniques and objectives, but they all aim to achieve the same result whether on track or on road they are looking to make you a better, more competent rider. Very few of us have the skills to get the best out of the bikes that we ride. A Track School will narrow the gap between the ability of the bike and the ability of the rider. You will be amazed at what you

are capable of when instructed well in the safe environment of the track. Many of the same guidelines apply to attending a Track Day and a Track School, but you will receive full briefing packs from most schools so you will know what to expect. When looking for a Track or Race School you should do your homework. Check online and talk to friends and get recommendations. Choose a school which will give you the experience and the skills that you are looking to develop. Most of all – enjoy the experience.
Off Road Schools Riding off road is recognised as one of the very best ways to improve your handling skills. Many top riders from all sectors of motorcycle
sport and professional riding use off road training to develop their techniques. Off Road Schools are great fun in all weathers and if you have never spent a day off road before, you should really enjoy the experience. Many Off Road Schools operate up and down the country and they offer different courses, but most will provide a beginners course for those new to the country lanes and byways. Most riders who go to Off Road Schools do not have an off road bike so nearly all of them will hire a bike as part of the course. They will also provide the specialist clothing that you will need – or at the very least a robust set of water proofs. You may be thinking of taking up a manufacturer’s course – more and more of them offer courses to complement the more rugged bikes in their ranges. These can be very useful as they will be developed around the bike that you ride. By their very nature many Off Road Schools are situated in areas which
are ‘off the beaten track’ and so you may find that you will have to travel. Remember that you will have a very full and extremely exhausting day, so try to plan your off road experience accordingly – maybe staying nearby rather than having a long ride or drive to get to your chosen location. Many Off Road Schools encourage younger riders and you will find that many have an age limit of 10 or 11 years as long as they are tall enough to safely handle the bike.
