The New Classics Technically, a ‘classic’ is anything 25 years old or more, and while many of us in the know have our fixed ideas about what makes a classic, for the younger generation those 80s hot rods and quirky numbers are often the cars of their childhood and very much worthy for restoration and rebuild. Many classic owners choose a model which reminds them of their childhood, something which rolled off the production line as a dream car which they can now afford to lovingly restore and rebuild. Others have a good old fashioned love of the history and engineering of cars built prior to their own birth, but as time moves forward, we are seeing more and more modern cars becoming coveted classics. Some see those built in the early 1990’s as being perhaps the last era of collectable classics to come; later than this and many marques become too generic with a lot of on board technology which will be too difficult for amateur maintenance.

As true vintage cars become older, along with their owners, keeping our skilled tradespeople in business is paramount, and that means adapting to welcome newer cars into the ranks of our beloved classics is important, if controversial. With owners club memberships dwindling, we need to encourage the next generation to indulge their classic car interest, and if that means classing 70s, 80s and even early 90’s motors in with the traditional stable of classic cars, then so be it. Let’s welcome the young and their hot rods at shows and events, and enjoy the fresh attitudes and new enthusiasm that will entail. For younger owners, this can mean embracing custom classics, and less general worrying about exact restoration. For the twitter loving, MP3 booming generation, custom is king, and maybe, on some of these newer ‘classics’, that is just fine.

1) Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk2 1984-1991 Of course the 1980s were the decade of the hot hatch, and the Golf GTI Mk2 did not disappoint. There are plenty still on the roads, and their iconic looks, reliability and fun, yet comfortable drive make them an excellent entry level modern classic for a younger collector looking to learn the field. 2) Ford Capri Mk III 1978- 1986 The final incarnation of Fords fabulous 70’s sports car ceased production in 1986, and although it was one of the most popular sporting cars in Britain during production, its ‘high risk’ image means there are far fewer of these on the roads. They tend to be more highly prized and therefore priced. It’s relatively hard to find one as a project, and owners are a

fiercely proud bunch, so there are quite a few on the roads in absolute mint condition. Its huge, sporty front end, moody styling and comfy bucket seats make this a quirky and sociable purchase. Brilliant fun to drive too – and the Eds first car! 3) Subaru Impreza MkI 1992 – 2000 More of a one to watch, this. With a combination of quirky (love it or hate it) looks, solid, durable build and low price, plus Colin McRae’s 1995 WRC performance, it became a favourite with young petrol heads all over the UK. A variety of special editions means these can be fairly limited and quite sought after, but as a restoration project they are an excellent choice for the younger enthusiast, providing a solid frame and reasonably priced parts.

hether your car is a top of the range, brand spanking new beauty, or a more beloved classic, taking care of the interior surfaces is an important part of your car care, which can sometimes be neglected. Thinking about the sort of dirt which vehicle seating and carpeting can attract, there is of course a hygiene aspect to consider.

well as appearance, and while the exterior is often simply about safety and durability, the softer surfaces inside are much more susceptible to dirt and damage. Modern materials are of course more dirt repellent, and have been created to stay cleaner for longer, but even luxurious, wipe clean leather will require help to keep it supple, shiny and dirt free.

Trapped food, bacteria and all sorts of nasties can lurk unwanted in your car, so some time spent on your car will obviously be beneficial to your health! Looking after the upholstery properly will prolong its life, maintaining more of the cars value, as well as enhancing your comfort and making the drive feel, and smell, so much nicer.

The first point to remember, obviously, is to take some care. Don’t smoke, eat or drink in the car if you can avoid it, to stop any spillages, smoke pollution or accumulation of sticky residues. Do try to vacuum and wipe down inside regularly; this way you will avoid the build up of sticky dust and grime which so often happens if it is left. Look at specialist products for the fabrics and materials in your car, and use them specifically according to the manufacturer’s

instructions. Do check that you are using the correct product – modern interiors for example may look like leather but be manufactured from a different material which will not take too kindly to leather treatment. Classic cars often have leather trim which will need careful conservation to keep it supple and fresh smelling. If you have purchased a badly used car, or there has been a spill or damage to your upholstery, these simple tips probably won’t help you. Instead what you really must do is talk to a reputable professional. Particularly bad stains or smells will be almost impossible to clear without their help, and you also run the risk of inflicting more damage on your cars interior by doing the job incorrectly. A professional will be able

to clean thoroughly, efficiently and safely around the cars electrics, and usually will offer a much deeper and long lasting clean which will extend the life of your upholstery and therefore your motor, and mean that in future you simply need to keep up regular maintenance to keep the car looking good and smelling sweet.

Selling your Classic Car?

We often focus in the directory on tips for buying a classic car, forgetting of course that at some point you are likely to be selling that same car. Unlike the modern car world, selling is a delicate area which needs consideration to make sure you get a good price and your car goes to a good new home! No matter how close to your heart you hold your classic, many owners only have both the time and space for a finite number of classics, and if a new project is beckoning, it may be time to sell an existing car to a new owner with more time to care for it. Sometimes classics are sold because the restoration has become too much to handle, or purely for financial reasons; but for most the sale is likely to be rather emotional, particularly if you have done much of the back breaking and intricate restoration work yourself. There are a variety of things to consider:

Valuation Like any collectable, values can fluctuate wildly based on scarcity, popularity, ease of maintenance and more. Online research will give a practical idea of a rough asking price for similar age and condition models, as are magazines and dealerships. Do realise that asking price and actual sale price are often quite different; rather like house prices, in order to allow for some negotiation. It is worth calling in a valuations expert to give you an idea of what the car is worth. Be prepared that if you have self restored, the final valuation may not measure up to your expectations; particularly if you have spent considerable time and money in the restoration process.

Preparation Like any sale, you will need to put some preparation into the car before you start seeing prospective buyers to ensure it is looking and running at it’s best, thus getting you the best possible value. Hopefully; it will already be in good condition, but if you are selling an unfinished project, or indeed one which was finished some time ago, then making sure the car looks at its best will get you better offers and mean those who look will be more likely to buy. A good clean and polish will help, whatever the car’s condition, and tidying up the interior and giving the trim a go over is also a good start. Be thorough, and don’t forget areas like wheel arches and mud flaps, as these will be a good indication to your buyers as to the condition you have kept the car in. Any car is probably going to be more sale worthy with a long MOT, and an oil change etc is also a good idea to give potential purchasers more value for their money. Don’t forget to make sure all your paperwork is in order.

How to sell You may trade the car in, commission a dealer to sell it for you, or you may prefer to offer it for a private sale. There is also the option of auction, but as many who attend these are looking for a real bargain, this may not get you the price you are looking for; and will also be subject to a commission for the auctioneer. Commercial and Agricultural Classics Over recent years we have seen quite an increase in interest in a field which is fast losing its status as a minor hobby for a select few special interest collectors – commercial and agricultural vehicles. It has always been a fairly niche hobby for a variety of factors – the most obvious being the fact that owning a classic commercial or agricultural vehicle is a less suitable hobby for many collectors who don’t have the space to keep one nor the opportunity to use such a vehicle. Not only this, but in the case of light commercial vehicles, small trucks and vans, corporate use has meant that not many have made it in restorable condition. Whether they have undertaken ‘dirty’ jobs or simply covered incredibly high mileage, many simply haven’t 62

survived. The sheer scale of these vehicles can make restoration a daunting proposition, and the fact that tractors and farm engines have usually been used on farms and the like until they are literally dead, often being repaired with all manner of bizarre materials over the years, makes the task even bigger. The expertise is also hard to come by – while many, many owners spent years tinkering with their motorcars, larger vehicles, steam engines and so on tend to require a lot of specialist knowledge and understanding. Add to that the fact that you don’t tend to drive past a tractor scrap yard or steam engine breakers very often means parts and components can be very scarce. A browse online reveals however that there is actually a

great deal of interest in the subject matter. There are several websites devoted to steam engines, the history of and current examples, e.g. www.steam-up.co.uk. There are corporate and agricultural vehicle manufacturers who have huge fan bases with photos of lovingly restored vehicles and stories of restoration for example the AEC Society who celebrate the firms building of London Buses from the beginning of the 20th century to 1979, and lots more besides. There are usually some excellent examples of commercial vehicles at the International Classic Motor Show at the NEC, from beautifully restored AA recovery vehicles to forces models. For more focussed event, try the Classic Commercial Show Donington possibly – see www.truckinglive.co.uk for more information on this and its sister show, Trucking Live. Also notable is the Great Dorset Steam Fair (www.gdsf.co.uk) which is a mix of national heritage, classic vehicles, music, rural demonstrations and family events. The show attracts more than 200,000 visitors annually and is a huge draw for

enthusiasts and families alike, so anyone interested in running or restoring a vintage vehicle that was once commercial or agricultural should go along and find out more. Last but most certainly not least is the Historic Commercial Vehicles Club who are the largest official organisation for enthusiast in historic vans, lorries, buses, military and steam vehicles and hold events and rallies such as the annual London to Brighton Run in May and the Tans Pennine Run in August where members and guests can see one of the greatest historic commercial displays in the world.
