HONEY, I SHRUNK THE CAR The Coming Of The Compact SUV 12

The ‘crossover’; basically a car with the handling and ride style of a hatchback but the height and brawn of a 4x4, is still steadily increasing in sales in the UK. Their popularity is a no brainer for many – they combine the practicality and feeling of security of the bigger version while remaining economic to buy, cheaper to run and more flexible for urban driving, which is what most of us use them for. The larger SUV style car has been in vogue amongst celebs and fashionista’s for some time, but given their running costs and the disdain with which many urbanites treat these ‘Chelsea tractor’ drivers, it was clear that something new was required. It’s a competitive market, with virtually every manufacturer giving their take on this new version of the family drive. The Japanese manufacturers were quick on the uptake, and their original model, the Nissan Qashqai, was a trailblazer in the market as a reliable, infinitely driveable family car with beefy looks and plenty of space, and is still well loved by critics and owners alike for its value, reliability and sense. The marmite style of the Juke raised some eyebrows a bit later, it’s rounded face and froggy ‘eyes’ gaining it fans and detractors every where it went.

style air bumps on the front, rear and side panels. For a fairly chunky car, fuel consumption is very economical, at between something like 60 and 80mpg. Quirky interior styling, good storage inside and a good boot make this a different, fun, family bet. The Skoda Yeti will perhaps feel more familiar to hatchback drivers as this is somehow car like but with adaptable space and surprisingly driveable four-wheel drive in the Outdoor spec. As always with the Skoda, you get the VW engine but at considerably less cost. The Audi Q2 is expensive, but looks, feels and drives expensive too. Lots of tech, style and good looks and a clever ability to only use the required engine capacity makes for Audi’s trademark class and build quality in a roomy but not bulky offering starting at a cool £20,000.

We also like the Kia Sportage for its handsome good looks and sporty feel, and like all Kia’s, comes with their trademark 7 year warranty as well as being packed to the gills with equipment, including alloys, air con and mobile connectivity. Its also a good bet according to a 5 star NCAP crash test rating. It’s not our favourite in terms of performance, but is an improvement over older models and perfectly adequate for most. The Dacia Duster has caused a bit of stir, based more on its entry level price than any astounding entry to the market, but is worth a look for the budget conscious. True, the basic models come with literally no spec at all, not in Diesel, and not even with a radio, so it will cost a bit more if you want to jump to any of those. It’s actually a pleasant enough drive, based on its Renault / Nissan B0 platform, and has enough guts and personality to make up for it’s lack of gadgetry. Next is the Citroen C4 Cactus. Citroën have really upped their game in recent years and this compact SUV is no exception – light, quirky and affordable with some customisable features including the bubble wrap

Renault Captur is based on the ever popular Clio, managing to capture its essence while evolving it into a surprisingly stylish bulkier version. We think the removable and washable covers are particularly family friendly, and its pretty fuel efficient too. At the upper end of the market, its definitely worth looking at the Audi Q3. This is a beefed up A3, with all the drive quality and specifications you’d expect, plus the chunk and superior drive position of an SUV. Somewhat ironically, Mini also have an offering here, the Countryman, a slightly podgier version of its little brother, but actually, this is a spacious, fun option with the typical Mini drive and high spec interior. Pricey as Mini’s can be, but certainly a head turner.

Custom Cars As the plethora of magazines, websites, hints, tips and videos on YouTube testify, customising cars and custom car kits are an increasingly popular hobby the world over. With a huge amount of after sales in car finishes and accessories, customising and kit cars have become a large, addictive motoring genre, which can suit most budgets and is a hobby which can be taken as far as you fancy, from small changes to a whole custom build. Street cars or race cars can be modified to improve both styling and performance, depending on your intended final use of the car. Customisation can take all sorts of forms, from paintwork, decals and accessories all the way to engine replacement, with full body kits available. If you prefer, you can take the road of a full kit car to truly create the vehicle of your dreams. You may choose to undertake the work yourself, or employ one of a select few engineers who will fully consult with you and discover exactly what you are trying to achieve whilst creating a beautiful professional finish. Planning your customisation carefully and thoroughly is absolutely crucial, as it can be a very time consuming and expensive hobby, and of course you want to get the perfect result without having to undo any important technical work. Decide which aspects you want to customise:

>>> Engine Of course the engine will go a long way towards improving the performance of your custom car, making it faster, more reliable and more pleasant to drive, but unless you really do have all the information at hand and the skills to use it, this really is a job best left to the professionals. You can also modify braking systems and exhaust systems, again improving performance and reliability.

>>> Upholstery / Interior Adding in a new, custom designed interior, be it a restoration of the car’s original interior or a full design job, can really add luxury and comfort. Modern gadgets can be quite intriguing in classic cars, and a striking interior will definitely stamp your personality on your car.

>>> Exterior / Paint / Bodywork There are many ways in which you can customise the exterior of your vehicle. Custom paint and decals in striking and bright colours are very popular in the custom world, as are body kits to add shape and definition. You can also customise tyres, mirrors, plates and more, all of which will completely alter the image of your vehicle. A custom show is an excellent starting point for inspiration. Do talk to those in your chosen supplier as to what finishes are available, and the practicality and longevity of your chosen work.

COVID CAR CARE POST LOCKDOWN GUIDE With people self-isolating and staying at home during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown, cars may have sat idle on the driveway or at the roadside for many weeks. Plus, with some MOTs postponed to a later date, due to the six-month extension of 16

certificates from 30th March 2020, it is your responsibility to ensure that your vehicle is roadworthy and safe to drive before hitting the road. Here are a few areas to look out for.

Under pressure to perform

Go out on a charge

If a car has been stationary for a prolonged period of time, tyre pressure can be lost. Therefore, to top it up to the recommended levels, which can be often be found on the driver’s side door frame or in the handbook, you can use a home tyre inflation kit, or if it is safe to do so, you can visit a nearby petrol station forecourt that has an air machine. As well as running at the right pressures, tyres must also have the correct tread depth (i.e. 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre), and be free of any defects, bulges and cracking.

If you haven’t used your car for a while, the battery may have gone flat, with the same fate applying to plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles (EVs). If you don’t have the option of jump starting the car, and don’t have vehicle recovery at your home address on your breakdown policy, it is still possible to pay for it, or alternatively portable battery chargers and boosters to recharge the battery can be purchased. Once you have started the car, it is recommended that you go out for a 20 to 30 minute drive to allow the battery to charge up again. 17

If the battery has lost charge, it may also be worth checking the date on it, as batteries over five years old will generally be more susceptible to failing and might be worth replacing.

Keep it fluid It’s good practice with routine maintenance to check that all the vital fluids are topped up, such as oil and screenwash. For the oil, the level should sit between the two marks on the dipstick, whilst the latter should be equal to the “max” or “maximum” line.

Tax it or risk a fine If you have been self-isolating during the past few months, and declared your car as “SORN”, i.e. off road, you will need to visit the GOV.UK “Tax your vehicle” website to re-tax your vehicle according to the current bands. If you drive a SORN car, other than to go to a pre-booked MOT, you can be fined £80, with a maximum penalty of £1,000 if the case were to end up in court.

With MOT certificates extended from the 30th March according to the latest rules, motorists can tax their vehicle using their existing MOT certificate. It’s also worth bearing in mind that, as of 27th May 2020, test certificates will be reminding drivers that, if a vehicle fails its MOT, the six-month exemption will no longer be valid.

Stay covered Your car insurance may have also expired whilst the car was off the road, so before heading out, it’s worth just double checking that it’s still valid, and that you can drive legally. If it has expired, or the agreement didn’t renew automatically, you can get quotes online or over the phone from insurers when shopping around for a new policy.

Cleanliness is key Stationary cars, whether on a driveway, or when parked at the roadside, can gather dirt, grime and dust. Therefore, front and rear screens should be cleaned and be free of smears for maximum visibility, and all mirrors should also be wiped down.

At the same time, you should also check your front are rear number plates are clearly visible.

Check your lights are working Although we’re now getting used to the longer days of sunlight, the nights will soon start to draw in again, so it’s important to make sure that all of your front and rear lights are working before setting off. This includes the fog lamps.

Keep an eye out for wildlife Static vehicles can provide an ideal nesting spot or home for some wildlife, so it’s worth giving the car a once over to ensure that no small animals are stowed away in the wheel arches, or have made the engine bay their home.

Heading out… When you start the car up for the first time, and all the necessary checks have been made, let the engine run to allow the oil to circulate, and if it’s convenient to do so, it’s advisable to go on a short drive, ideally on different types of roads, to be able to move through the gears, get the engine up to temperature and to recharge the battery.

There is a difference, and increasingly, that difference can affect the projected values of a classic car in the UK. Conservation is gaining popularity over a full strip down, ground up restoration for many owners. Although for many years, the aim has been to rebuild and restore a classic car into a shining, new version of its previous self, preservation works in order to conserve as much of the cars original body and parts as possible, retaining the character it has developed through years of use. Restoration will mean new parts, chrome work or upholstery, where preservation works to repair and carefully enhance the original car with its faults and history on proud display.

If you don’t have those, it may be worth contacting your marque owners club to find out if there is any way to trace former owners and try to build up a picture of the cars past history. If your classic car is British, try contacting the British Motor Heritage Trust, as you may be able to apply for a Heritage Certificate which will confirm the cars original authenticity, factory spec and any other info held. If you happen to own a British classic, such as a Mini or Rover, you can apply to the British Motor Heritage Trust for a Heritage Certificate that will confirm the exact specification of your vehicle when it left the factory.

Of course, for many owners, a shiny, reliable and day to day car is the end goal, and sometimes it just isn’t possible to preserve a real antique in all its original beauty, but estimates suggest that a beautifully preserved example with original paint colours and workmanship may well just have the edge in terms of value.

It is a fascinating hobby, preserving vast parts of motoring heritage with many sub genres depending on your interests. Most people end up collecting a particular field, or items corresponding to their favourite marque – as with any collectable, value is directly linked to desirability and rarity.
