Honey I Shrunk the Car: the Coming Of The Compact SUV

The ‘crossover’; basically a car with the handling and ride style of a hatchback but the height and brawn of a 4x4, is still steadily increasing in sales in the UK. Their popularity is a no brainer for many – they combine the practicality and feeling of security of the bigger version while remaining economic to buy, cheaper to run and more flexible fro urban driving, which is what most of us use them for. The larger SUV style car has been in vogue amongst celebs and fashionista’s for some time, but given their running costs the disdain with which many urbanites treat these ‘Chelsea tractor’ drivers, it was clear that something new was required. It’s a competitive market, with virtually every manufacturer giving their take on this new version of the family drive. The Japanese manufacturers were quick on the uptake, and their original model, the Nissan Qashqai, was a trailblazer in the market as a reliable, infinitely driveable family car with beefy looks and plenty of space, and is still well loved by critics and owners alike for its value, reliability and sense. The marmite style of the Juke raised some eyebrows a bit later, it’s rounded face and froggy ‘eyes’ gaining it fans and detractors every where it went. We also like the Kia Sportage for its handsome good looks and sporty feel, and like all Kia’s, comes with their trademark 7 year warranty as well as being packed to the gills with equipment, including alloys, air con and mobile connectivity. Its also a good bet according to a 5 star NCAP crash test rating. It’s not our favourite in terms of performance, but is an improvement over older models and perfectly adequate for most. The Dacia Duster has caused a bit of stir recently, based more on its entry level price than any astounding entry to the market, but is worth a look for the budget conscious. True, the basic models come with literally no spec at all, not in Diesel, and not even with a radio, so it will cost a bit more if you want to jump to any of those. It’s actually a pleasant enough drive, based on its Renault / Nissan B0 platform, and has enough guts and personality to make up for it’s lack of gadgetry.

Next is the Citroen C4 Cactus. Citroën have really upped their game in recent years and this compact SUV is no exception – light, quirky and affordable with some customisable features including the bubble wrap style air bumps on the front, rear and side panels. For a fairly chunky car, fuel consumption is very economical, at between something like 60 and 80mpg. Quirky interior styling, good storage inside and a good boot make this a different, fun, family bet. The Skoda Yeti will perhaps feel more familiar to hatchback drivers as this is somehow car like but with adaptable space and surprisingly driveable fourwheel drive in the Outdoor spec. As always with the Skoda, you get the VW engine but at considerably less cost. The Audi Q2 is expensive, but looks, feels and drives expensive too. Lots of tech, style and good looks and a clever ability to only use the required engine capacity makes for Audi’s trademark class and build quality in a roomy but not bulky offering starting at a cool £20,000. Renault Captur is based on the ever popular Clio, managing to capture its essence while evolving it into a surprisingly stylish bulkier version. We think the removable and washable covers are particularly family friendly, and its pretty fuel efficient too. At the upper end of the market, its definitely worth looking at the Audi Q3. This is a beefed up A3, with all the drive quality and specifications you’d expect, plus the chunk and superior drive position of an SUV. Somewhat ironically, Mini also have an offering here, the Countryman, a slightly podgier version of its little brother, but actually, this is a spacious, fun option with the typical Mini drive and high spec interior. Pricey as Mini’s can be, but certainly a head turner.

The Facts: • Motor vehicle theft has been on a steady decline since 2000, but more than 48,000 vehicles were still reported stolen in the UK in 2021. • Despite a car theft taking place every 22 seconds, over 40% of motorists regularly leave valuables on show when their cars are unattended according to research by RAC Auto Windscreens. • Only 3% of motorists secure valuables in an in-car safe and just 13% put precious possessions in the boot. • This is especially worrying when research revealed that one in ten cars has contents worth more than £1000 – that’s over twice the value of electrical goods in the average British bedroom (£399). • A quarter of cars have Sat Nav technology, a fifth transport a laptop, one in eight containing iPods and portable DVD players and three quarters of motorists leave a mobile phone in the car. Whether it is your car itself or the items within, your car ius a target, and item of value of interest to thieves. With more than 48,000 cars reported stolen in 2021 and many thousands of thefts reported from cars, a decline in theft does not mean your vehicles and valuables are safe. So what can you do? Well, while it is true that built in immobilisers and alarms make a good deterrent, a valuable car or one with expensive items on display will still be quite a target. Modern cars make a satisfying thunk when locked – get into the habit of ensuring you hear the locking system every single time you leave your vehicle, even when it is in sight. Sometimes a fob can malfunction or the battery fail, so the lights flashing and sound of the locks engaging will confirm the car is truly locked. Do not leave any valuables in plain sight. Yes, your smartphone is probably locked and useless, but thieves don’t know that for sure, and if you leave

Apple products on display, who knows what other expensive items may be lurking ready to steal? Lock everything away, from paperwork to electronics if you are unable to simply take it with you. Ensure your keys are kept safely out fo sight, and never leave them in view on your homes windows or on a kitchen counter. Where you leave your car is another point to consider. At work, at home, out and about – always try to pick a well lit, populated area for parking. A monitored car park, outside your home and under a streetlamp will all help. Thieves prefer to operate in dark, unlit areas where they are less likely to be disturbed or identified via CCTV. It is worth considering installing motion activated lights on your driveway, and / or visible CCTV cameras as an extra deterrent. Security equipment is readily available and has come a long way from the basic crook locks of the past. Tracking devices are increasingly popular with good reason – for an upfront fee and usually a regular subscription, police will be able to track your car in the event of its theft, ensuring you recover your vehicle if not your valuables. Modern steering wheel locks are usually very easy to use, sturdy, and a relative inexpensive tool acting as a good visible deterrent and making it much harder to commit theft.

Money Saving Motoring Lets face it, we’ve all got enough expenses these days, and running an older car can at times be an expensive habit. Even a brand new off the forecourt model will lose value pretty quickly, and with the UK cost of living currently at one of highest points in history, expenses can mount. From major restoration work to every day running costs and the price of fuel, a few tips to save a bit of extra cash would help most of us. Despite what might be perceived as the expense of running a true classic, we are fortunate enough in the UK to have a situation in which there are in fact financial benefits to running something a little older. Firstly, we are all aware of the huge amounts of depreciation suffered by new cars, which usually lose between 20 and 40% of their value in the first year. Buying something 3 years old or perhaps slightly more will give you some of the same benefits as a classic, although many classics are the only cars where in fact value can increase rather than reduce. If your car was built pre 1977, then it qualifies as a classic, meaning you will have no road tax to pay, which can save over £200 a year and have quite an effect on your budget.

Insurance Insurance really does take a sizeable chunk out of the UK motorist’s budget. Current government proposals are suggesting a reclassification of classic cars to make any pre 1977 motor exempt from the requirement to take a yearly MOT test which may hold implications for rates of insurance on classic and veteran cars, but in the meantime, and perhaps after, there are distinctly advantages here to running a classic rather than a modern car. Specialist insurers will be much more informed about your car and it’s pitfalls, and a little judicious comparison between quotes and policy details can make all the difference. Discounts are sometimes also available to owners club members, so do check if you are a member whether you could save; in some cases the saving may well be more than the cost of joining, so it is definitely worth checking this. Given that many classic owners tend not to do a great deal of mileage, you will get further discounts by agreeing an imposed mileage limit. Do be aware that policies do vary in terms of depth of cover, so check the fine print an ensure you get a policy that offers a more than adequate level of cover.

Driving How you drive does have a fairly significant impact on how much driving is costing you. Smooth, even driving with gentle and timely gear changes makes by far the best use of fuel available. Even experienced drivers should be aware that motoring with a heavy foot is not good for fuel economy, so don’t cane the engine or push it to perform in lower gears. Try not to carry unnecessary loads. A toolkit or similar heavy load in the boot may be a convenience, but the extra weight will be costly. Shop around for fuel. It is easy to get into the mindset of just filling up or putting in a tenner (not that that would get you very far these days!) but actually fuel prices can vary by quite a bit. Supermarkets often have very good rates, and some also come with loyalty card points which can add up quickly if you do quite a lot of mileage.

Maintenance If you have any skill at all with a spanner, basic maintenance done at home can save you quite a bit. Routine maintenance can flag up problems long before they turn into costly repair jobs, so look out for your tyres, oil levels, fluids and gearbox on a regular basis. Keep to the tyre pressures guide in your manual, as underinflated tyres mean the engine has to work much harder, using more fuel. Also try to keep an eye on tread on a regular basis; as uneven wear will alert you early to any more serious issues with tracking or similar which may lead to a more costly replacement job than necessary. A clean car is much less vulnerable to rust and rot, both of which can be very expensive to correct and will have a detrimental effect on the cars future resale value, so spend a little time cleaning and polishing to keep the body work in spick and span condition, and you will likely save yourself plenty in the future. Garages obviously have overheads, and skilled labour is costly. Complicated work definitely needs an expert, but for routine, simple jobs, those that you can do yourself are worth attempting. Jobs like checking and changing filters and oil will be covered in your manual, and are not massively time consuming. Slightly more in depth jobs are also possible to cover at; but it is worthy asking for advice first to ensure you do not do more damage than good if you are at all nervous about your skill levels.

Upholstery Cleaning & Care Whether your car is a top of the range, brand spanking new beauty, or a more beloved classic, taking care of the interior surfaces is an important part of your car care, which can sometimes be neglected. Thinking about the sort of dirt which vehicle seating and carpeting can attract, there is of course a hygiene aspect to consider. Trapped food, bacteria and all sorts of nasties can lurk unwanted in the nooks and crannies of your car, creating germs and unwanted odours to linger. Looking after the upholstery properly will also prolong its life, helping you to maintain the value of your car and enhancing your comfort and making the drive feel, and smell, so much nicer. Car interiors tend to be designed as much for comfort as for appearance, which can make them much more vulnerable to dirt and damage. Modern materials are of course more dirt repellent than older fabrics, and have been created to stay cleaner for longer but will still be susceptible to spills and damp. Even luxurious, wipe clean leather will require help to keep it supple, shiny and dirt free. Obviously, cleaning upholstery is a bigger job than being careful in the first place, so it pays to ensure both you and your passengers take some care when riding in your vehicle. Don’t smoke, eat or drink in the car if you can avoid it, to stop any spillages, smoke

pollution or accumulation of sticky residues. Do try to vacuum and wipe down inside regularly; this way you will avoid the build up of grime which so often happens if it is left. Look at specialist products for the fabrics and materials in your car, and use them specifically according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Do check that you are using the correct product – modern interiors for example may look like leather but be manufactured from a different material which will not take too kindly to leather treatment. If you have purchased a used car with ingrained dirt and grime, or there has been a serious spill or damage to your upholstery, these simple tips probably won’t help you. Instead what you really must do is talk to a reputable professional. Particularly bad stains or smells will be almost impossible to clear without their help, and you also run the risk of inflicting more damage on your cars interior by doing the job incorrectly. A professional will be able clean thoroughly, efficiently and safely around the cars electrics, and usually will offer a much deeper and long lasting clean which will extend the life of your upholstery and therefore your motor, and mean that in future you simply need to keep up regular maintenance to keep the car looking good and smelling sweet.

CAR CARE With more people working remote, cars have been sitting idle on the driveway or at the roadside for many weeks. Here are a few areas to look out for: UNDER PRESSURE TO PERFORM If a car has been stationary for a prolonged period of time, tyre pressure can be lost. Therefore, to top it up to the recommended levels, which can be often be found on the driver’s side door frame or in the handbook, you can use a home tyre inflation kit, or if it is safe to do so, you can visit a nearby petrol station forecourt that has an air machine. As well as running at the right pressures, tyres must also have the correct tread depth (i.e. 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre), and be free of any defects, bulges and cracking. GO OUT ON A CHARGE If you haven’t used your car for a while, the battery may have gone flat, with the same fate applying to plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles (EVs). If you don’t have the option of jump starting the car, and don’t have vehicle recovery at your home address on your breakdown policy, it is still possible to pay for it, or alternatively portable battery chargers and boosters to recharge the battery can be purchased. Once you have started the car, it is recommended that you go out for a 20 to 30 minute drive to allow the battery to charge up again. If the battery has lost charge, it may also be worth checking the date on it, as batteries over five years old will generally be more susceptible to failing and might be worth replacing. KEEP IT FLUID It’s good practice with routine maintenance to check that all the vital fluids are topped up, such as oil and screenwash. For the oil, the level should sit between the two marks on the dipstick, whilst the latter should be equal to the “max” or “maximum” line.

STAY COVERED Your car insurance may have also expired whilst the car was off the road, so before heading out, it’s worth just double checking that it’s still valid, and that you can drive legally. If it has expired, or the agreement didn’t renew automatically, you can get quotes online or over the phone from insurers when shopping around for a new policy. CLEANLINESS IS KEY Stationary cars, whether on a driveway, or when parked at the roadside, can gather dirt, grime and dust. Therefore, front and rear screens should be cleaned and be free of smears for maximum visibility, and all mirrors should also be wiped down. At the same time, you should also check your front are rear number plates are clearly visible. CHECK YOUR LIGHTS ARE WORKING Although we’re now getting used to the longer days of sunlight, the nights will soon start to draw in again, so it’s important to make sure that all of your front and rear lights are working before setting off. This includes the fog lamps. KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR WILDLIFE Static vehicles can provide an ideal nesting spot or home for some wildlife, so it’s worth giving the car a once over to ensure that no small animals are stowed away in the wheel arches, or have made the engine bay their home. HEADING OUT… When you start the car up for the first time, and all the necessary checks have been made, let the engine run to allow the oil to circulate, and if it’s convenient to do so, it’s advisable to go on a short drive, ideally on different types of roads, to be able to move through the gears, get the engine up to temperature and to recharge the battery.

From major restoration work to every day running costs and the price of fuel, a few tips to save a bit of extra cash would help most of us.

Despite what might be perceived as the expense of running a true classic, we are fortunate enough in the UK to have a situation in which there are in fact financial benefits to running something a little older. Firstly, we are all aware of the huge amounts of depreciation suffered by new cars, which usually lose between 20 and 40% of their value in the first year. Buying something 3 years old or perhaps slightly more will give you some of the same benefits as a classic, although many classics are the only cars where in fact value can increase rather than reduce.
