Keeping hens at home seems to be becoming an incredibly popular hobby. Just take a look on social media and see how many people have taken off keeping a few birds for eggs, or tending to a flock of rare breeds. Adopting ex battery hens is also a possibility – several family members have committed to re-homing some of these poor girls and have grown very fond of their new creatures.

Keeping less than 50 birds means you don’t have to register as a livestock owner with Defra; however it is a good idea to make sure that you receive any health information, disease alerts and so on.

If the idea is something which tickles you, then do your research. Keeping livestock is a slightly different ball game to keeping other domesticated pets; and while chickens can be fairly low maintenance, all owners have a responsibility under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 to ensure that all welfare needs are properly met.

The first thing to consider is the space you have available. Chickens are sociable creatures and will need to be kept in a group. If you are considering keeping them for eggs, then you will need several

laying birds to provide enough for the average British family. A coop is essential no matter how ‘free range’ you’d like to keep the birds. They need it for a secure place to roost at night, away from casual predators. They are also fairly destructive in terms of garden space, so if you are a green fingered prodigy, you may want to consider a larger coop which can contain them for longer. A rough rule of thumb is around 50cmsq for each bird, plus a perch for roosting and a nesting box, and you must provide warmth and shelter from the elements too. Ventilation is important as chicken waste contains ammonia which can cause respiratory problems and damage eyes, although a well built home should also avoid drafty sleeping areas.

Exercise space is key, and this should ideally be enclosed with wire mesh fencing to avoid foxes. This should be checked regularly for any signs of wear or tampering.

There are a host of products on the market, from plastic, easy clean houses which tend to be on the small side but are easy to clean, to complex DIY wooden coop and run combos which provide excellent height but will need more maintenance.

Pet care expert gives tips on relieving Seasonal Affective Disorder

With one in three Brits experiencing symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), experts at leading pet food brand Webbox are warning that the change of seasons could also affect canines.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), also known as the ‘winter depression’ is a wellknown phenomenon across humans during the darker and colder months. As daylight decreases, the human brain produces more melatonin and less serotonin, creating a chemical imbalance which ultimately can have a substantial impact on mood, sleep, appetite, and activity.

A study by the UK’s leading vet charity, People’s Dispensary of Sick Animals (PDSA), revealed that a third of dog owners noticed a downward turn in their pet’s mood during the colder months. Half of the owners studied also reported that their pets slept for longer periods of time, while 20 percent noted that their pets were significantly less active.

In a response to the upcoming darker months, the experts at Webbox are hoping to educate pet owners on identifying and relieving the symptoms of SAD within dogs.

Camille Ashforth, Senior Brand Manager at Webbox, said: “Studies have shown that humans share a lot of the same brain chemistry with dogs, so it’s no surprise that our pets may also experience the chemical imbalance that causes SAD.

“Just as we can feel our moods drop when the seasons change, our pets can too. With the Autumn Equinox having just fallen, it’s important to keep an eye on pooches for the tell-tale signs of SAD.”

Common symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder in dogs:

• Grumpiness and irritability

• General fatigue

• Changes in appetite

• Reduced energy

Tips for reducing the effects of SAD in dogs:

1) Keep up your summer routine through the winter months

Camille Ashforth says: “Try to keep their daily routine up throughout the winter months. Whilst we do appreciate that windy walks in the rain may not be as inviting as those lovely warm summer strolls, it’s important to keep your dog stimu lated by new sights and smells.

“With less sunshine throughout the winter months, a daily walk may also be the only chance your dog gets to experience some natural sunlight, so try to get out during the day if you can.”

2) Encourage indoor activity

“It’s important to ensure that dogs frequently have opportunities for stimulation and entertainment, so make time to interact with your dog throughout the day.

“You could also invest in some sensory pet toys that will give your

pooch something to play with, even if you’re not at home.”

3) Improve your internal lighting

“You could even purchase special light boxes that are designed to replicate natural sunlight to help alleviate the effects of SAD. While these products are designed by humans, it’s something that could also have a positive effect on your pooch. “If you’d rather not disturb your current lighting situation, simply moving your dog’s bed nearer a sunny-side window could help them soak up the natural rays better.”

4) Look after yourself

“Many people agree that pets will often react to and reflect their owner’s moods, so it’s important that you look after your own mental health – especially if you’re worried about your pets’.

“Focus on your stress levels, and make sure that you’re not outwardly projecting any negative characteristics around your pet that they could pick up on.”

Perhaps a smaller pet is something you are interested in due to space constraints, or perhaps not having the time or mobility to give an animal the exercise it requires. What sort of pet would best suit you and your family? The Blue Cross gives this advice:

Gerbils

Fun to watch if they are living in the correct conditions. They are burrowing animals by nature and spend many hours digging for pleasure, making them much more fun to observe than to handle. Gerbils are quick and agile, and young children can find it quite difficult to hold them without squeezing too hard. If you have young children and wish them to be able to handle their pet, it may be better to choose a different species. As pets for adults, however, you will certainly find gerbils fascinating both to watch and to handle.

Hamsters

There are many different types of hamster. Only one type needs to live as a solitary animal, while all others need companions. They are by nature nocturnal animals and can become quite alarmed if disturbed in the daytime. For this reason they may be a disappointing companion for a child and may bite if disturbed from sleep, they are probably just waking up as your child is going to bed. With quite poor eyesight and easily startled by sudden movements, they make much better companions for adults than for children.

Mice

Small and quick and, for this reason, may not be suitable for young children. As with all small furry animals, there needs to be considerable parental interest as children can easily be distracted and forget the daily needs of their pets. Male mice have quite a strong smell of musk, but the females have far less smell. For this reason more attention needs to be given to the cleaning regime for males.

Guinea Pigs

Can make good companions for adults and children. They are fun to watch and have a varied vocabulary. Once you get to know your animals it is possible to tell when they are happy, sad, excited or angry. They are not happy just to be left in a hutch at the bottom of the garden, but need shelter from all extremes of weather and a run to enable them to graze freely, safe from predators. It is vital that they are with another of their own kind. Gentle by nature, guinea pigs can be a good first-time companion for a child as long as there is considerable parental interest. Consideration needs to be given to their fairly long lifespan, which can be up to seven years. If you are buying them for your children, please consider whether they will still be interested in seven years time. Many animals end up in rehoming centres such as The Blue Cross because children often reach an age when their priorities change.

Chinchillas

If housed and handled correctly, chinchillas make intelligent, happy and interesting companions. When you know them well and they are happy in their homes, they can be taught to do basic tricks in order to earn a treat! Consideration must be given to their long lifespan, which is approximately 15 years. It is vital to give extra thought if you are considering buying them as companions for your children – who may have grown up and left home by the time the chinchillas have reached later life. Chinchillas are nocturnal animals, and need a very large cage plus a dust bath (this is essential for their mental and physical well-being). They are enthusiastic dust bathers and do make quite a lot of mess! Chinchillas need to live with a companion – either a female with a neutered male, or litter-mates of the same sex (they will usually live harmoniously as long as they have been together since birth). As well as having a large cage for their accommodation, they need to be given exercise time out of their cage, and are responsive and lively animals.

Rabbits

Most people are of the opinion that rabbits are excellent pets for children. There are, however, many things to be considered before thinking of giving a home to these animals, especially

when you have young children. Rabbits are prey animals and need to be ready to run from danger at all times. Those rabbits kept only in hutches have nowhere to feel secure, and when a child tries to lift them from the hutch, the rabbit may try to scratch, kick or bite to get away from perceived danger. Children can therefore be disappointed when they find their rabbits are not keen to be picked up and cuddled. They do make good companions for children as long as their accommodation is correct and the handling is done with sensitivity and under adult supervision. The best kind of accommodation for rabbits when children are involved in their daily care, is a wooden Wendy house construction with an attached run area. This will give children the opportunity to sit quietly and wait for the rabbits to come to them. This way the animals will feel more confident as they will have all four feet on the ground and will be able to hop away should they wish to do so. It also means that the rabbits can still be given attention even during bad weather and the children will be able to groom them and watch them having fun. It is important that a rabbit has a companion of its own kind. Many people are of the opinion that rabbits and guinea pigs can live quite happily together, but this is NOT the case. They do not “speak the same language” and rabbits can sometimes inflict quite severe injuries on guinea pigs, especially in the spring. The approximate lifespan of a rabbit is between six and eight years, therefore careful thought needs to be given before taking on these animals.

Please be sure that when buying any small animal for yourself or your children you always use a reputable breeder. Make sure the animals have been sexed properly, and are of sufficient age to leave their mothers. Never buy animals from pet shops unwilling to spend time with you making sure you understand the commitment being taken on.

So what sort of pet would best suit you & your family?

Senior Pet Care

As we age, so do our bodies and our minds. Strength can weaken joints and bones and become stiff or sore; eyesight may suffer. It is not different from our pets. That energetic puppy or playful kitten will soon grow up, and as their health begins to change or decline, it is important to make sure you know how to look after them properly.

When we talk about senior, we mean at around 7 years or so in dogs and cats. In small dogs, the signs of aging can take quite a bit longer to show, but energy levels will begin to drop, behaviour may alter, and dietary needs will probably require some thought. Thankfully, these changes are usually gradual, but regular vet checks and health checks at home should mean you are aware before they start to cause your pet too many aches and pains.

What should you watch for?

Well, changes to routine are the best signs. Sleeping patterns, appetite and activity levels are the obvious ones. An older cat may sleep more, or be less anxious for food; dogs may struggle with clean toileting even when they have long been trained. Some dogs may consume less water, so check they are drinking and not becoming dehydrated.

Mobility can be impaired, as can energy levels. It may be that you notice your dog seems more tired after a long walk, and you may need to consider a gentler route more often. If cats are suffering with arthritis or joint pain, they may not perch in as many high places or leap into action at the sight of a toy.

Hearing and sight can also be affected, and you may notice these are no longer as sharp. Behaviourally, there may be some changes in reactions towards strangers, or even family members, which can indicate cognitive issues and should be monitored closely. Dogs can suffer from senility issues in later life in the same way humans can, so odd behaviours should also be monitored.

What can you do?

A soft, comfy bed is excellent for older bones, and should help manage draught exposure too which can be painful for arthritic joints. Regular visits to the vets to monitor for any lumps and bumps, eye and ear issues and weight are also a good idea. Teeth should be monitored closely in older pets; as these can decline quite rapidly in health and cause diet issues very rapidly. Sadly, some breeds do not have particularly long life spans, and regular monitoring means you will be kept aware of how long it is kind to keep them going.

Diet and weight

Like people, both cats and dogs who become more sedentary later in life can have weight issues caused by the same diet with less exercise. Less calories will be used, but they still need the usual, and some extra, nutrients. Changing to a suitable ‘Senior Care’ feed is a good idea, as these are usually balanced to provide the right amount of protein and fibre with less calories to suit your pets lifestyle. As always, although it is tempting to treat your pet, cats and dogs should not consume human food, which is often calorie dense,

lacking in suitable nutrition and contains far too much salt and sugar, so keep scraps to an absolute minimum if you must.

Have some understanding too. If your cat is grouchy some days, leave her be. Ramps can help senior dogs climb into vehicles or up sharp steps where needed, and if walks take slightly longer, consider breaking them down or taking a less strenuous route.

Your pet will soon grow up, & as their health begins to change or decline, it is important to make sure you know how to look after them properly.

Snakes for Beginners

For some folk, snakes are not the obvious first choice as ‘pet’. Not cuddly, no big doe eyed companionship, and a steady diet of frozen rodents is not for everyone, perhaps understandably so. Of course, history has long painted the snake as the bad guy (the bible, anyone?) and something to be feared, and they are not easy pets either, requiring time, money and knowledge, but these fascinating creatures can be both rewarding and educational as pets. They may take some time to get to know your scent and identify that you are not a threat, but usually once this happens most snakes are happy to be handled.

Is it for you?

Well, snakes don’t smell, or shed hair around your house. They don’t require twice daily walks, or constant entertainment, and usually are far from sociable, meaning you can easily keep a single snake. On the other hand, they can live for a very long time, and will require roomy accommodation, heat and light, and again, there is the dead rodent aspect.

Which snake?

For beginners, most experts would recommend a corn snake or a milk snake. Anything overtly large, venomous or a large constrictor is definitely not suitable for those new to keeping snakes for obvious reasons. It is essential to seek out an experienced breeder, because trapped wild snakes can be very difficult to handle, may have mites or disease, and can be picky about live feeding as opposed to frozen food. Corn snakes are usually a good bet and come in a variety of colours or ‘morphs’ as snake lovers call them.

Habitat

Speak to the breeder about how large your snake will likely grow. You will need a temperature controlled vivarium which is properly secure,

as snakes can be quite the Houdini and squeeze through the smallest of gaps. Because snakes lead fairly sedentary lifestyles, the vivarium doesn’t need to be huge – roughly half the length of the stretched out snake is a good rule of thumb. Snakes thermo regulate, meaning you will require cool and warm spots, with a heating pad which does not cover the entire base of the tank. Humidity needs to be regulated according to the breed, and rocks / shrubbery will provide some entertainment too. The tank will need spot cleaning a day or two after feeding, and a full clean every few weeks.

Feed

Pet snakes are usually fed on a diet of frozen rats and mice. These will need to be thawed before feeding, and perhaps warmed slightly in colder weather. They are fed roughly on a weekly basis, but check with your breeder as to the best feed and feeding schedule until you get to know your snake better. They will also need a regular supply of fresh water, in a heavy dish that can’t spill too easily.

Health

Some breeds, such as the Ball Python (named for his shy habit of curling his large body around a small head) can often go on hunger strike. Usually this will be self limiting, but if your snake starts to look thin or unwell, he needs to visit the vet. Shedding is usually done with the skin in a whole piece; if your snake sheds in sections, this can also be a sign of ill health. Take care to make sure all dead skin is removed, gently bathing around eyes and mouth if flakes are left behind. Most vets should be fine with treating snakes, but it is a good idea to find one who takes a special interest in exotics to ensure your pet can always access the best care.

Who’s a Pretty Boy?

The English Budgerigar has been kept in captivity for centuries, and is the world’s most popular domesticated bird.

It isn’t difficult to understand why. These friendly, brightly plumed little birds are actually parrots with the hooked beak and 2 toes on the front and back of their feet. They have a reputation for intelligence and affection towards their owners, and can live for 10 or more years under the right conditions.

In a range of blue, green and yellow shades, budgerigars have also been bred with crests and brighter, more unusual colour combinations. Find a reputable local breeder who has a good stock of healthy birds, or speak to a friendly pet shop who you know deals with good breeders. Both hen and cock birds ‘talk’, but hens tend to be slightly less friendly and harder to train. You can house budgerigars in pairs, although do bear in mind a mixed pair will probably breed. If you want a same sex pair, cocks are likely to have a better relationship, although 2 hens can work.

As with any captive animal, space is crucial, so make sure you have space for a roomy cage, and consider letting your budgie out to spread his

wings (with all doors and windows firmly closed, of course) and explore. Plenty of toys, a mirror and perches will help to keep the budgie stimulated and stave off boredom. Make sure the budgie is located where he will not be exposed to aerosols or any harmful fumes, which include fragranced candles or plug in air fresheners, and check to ensure your houseplants are not poisonous.

Keep the cage clean and away from draughts which can cause colds, and make sure your budgie has mirrors and toys to provide plenty of stimulation, as a bored, depressed bird can have quite serious health problems.

Food wise, speak to the breeder to see what they recommend, but a good quality budgie mix can be purchased from pet food specialists and should provide a varied diet and plenty of mental stimulation too. Millet sprays are available as a treat, but not too often as they are high in calories and can make your bird overweight. Grit should be provided for digestive purposes, and a cuttlefish is a good idea; they provide more interest and are a good source of calcium. Green food, such as an occasional dandelion leaf can be thoroughly washed and offered in small quantities for some variation.

These friendly little birds are social creatures, so, particularly if you have a single bird, do make sure to spend a good amount of time interacting with

them. Chat, let them keep you company when you are at home if they fly free at all, perhaps give them whistle! If you want a bird that is hand tame, you will need to talk to breeders who do a lot of socialisation at a young age, and continue this, gently, at home. Unless you don’t mind being woken at dawn by your budgie chattering, a light sheet or cover should be placed over the cage at night, which will keep your budgie feeling secure and stop him waking with the lark, as it were!

Missing Pets

Cats

If you have ever had a cat go missing you will know what an upsetting experience this is. Some cats do go wandering; although they are territorial creatures studies have shown that some cats have quite large territories, and when nature calls, some do stray.

Indoor only cats can sometimes escape – usually they will not go far having only a limited territory so make sure you check all nooks and crannies in your home and garden. A cat used to indoor space may well find the outside world a scary place, so search very carefully in case your cat is hiding in fear.

For outdoor cats, the reality is that they may often roam far and wide – many cats can have a territory of quite some size and may be used to spending large parts of their day away.

When do you actually decide your cat is missing? Well, you know your pet’s routine. Do they usually come running home at breakfast time, or perhaps

when you return home from work? If they break routine and you are worried, then it isn’t too soon to check.

The first place to search is inside the house. Cats can be very good at silently sleeping in small, dark places, so before you get your walking boots on, search the house carefully. Outside, take a torch and something containing their favourite biscuits or treats. Check outbuildings such as sheds and garages, as cars can often shoot in unobtrusively, and a neighbour might have missed them slinking in. Listen well, using the treats to create a noise, as a trapped cat can often be heard.

Check dark corners with the torch, as even if the cat remains silent, the torch may give away the glow in their eyes. If you live close to open fields or wooded areas, your cat may well have strayed too far on a hunting expedition, so it is worth search here too.

Please, please ensure your cat is microchipped –nearly all vets and rescue centres have a scanner and will be able to locate you if your pet is bought in to them.

If initial searches yield no results, the next step is to involve others. Put up posters, at eye level, and approaching regular dog walkers is a good idea as they may well have spotted the cat on their routine walks. It is also a good idea to check with the council and local vets and shelters to check if any cats matching your missing cats description have been found, and to make them aware to call you if they are in future.

Lastly, social media is an excellent place to look. Local interest pages are a good start, and most areas have a lost pet’s page which you will be able to post on.

Dogs

Losing a dog can be extremely traumatic – like losing any member of your family the sense of loss and grief can be overwhelming. Add in the feelings of worry as to where they may be, whether they are hurt, lost or frightened. It may be that your dog has escaped from an unsecured garden, or been scared outside and bolted; if that is the case, often they will range close to home and be relatively easy to find, so get out immediately and start looking.

Use your usual call or whistle, and check your usual walking routes. If you are unlucky and don’t find him quickly, contact your microchip provider, vet and any local rescue centres to be on the alert. It is also wise to get moving on photo flyers, which can be placed near your home, anywhere the dog is familiar with and hopefully, at the local vet and rescue centres.

Some pet insurance companies have plans in place if you think your dog is lost or stolen, so it is worthwhile giving them a call to see what they may be able to suggest.

Sadly, some 1750 dogs were reported stolen in the UK last year, figures which don’t take into account unreported thefts and are unfortunately on the increase. Pedigree dogs, especially smaller ones

Very sadly, some cats may have been hurt or worse, and never return, and some miraculous cases have trekked home after months or even years away, so keep searching and hope your moggy makes it home.

have become hot property amongst pet thieves, with some breeds commanding prices of £1,000 or more. ‘Designer’ breeds like Chihuahua’s, Staffies and Pugs are in particular demand, but many other breeds are also desirable, changing hands for far more sinister uses than simply selling on to a new owner. Dog fighting is on the increase, and some breeds are being stolen for use as bait dogs.

Most dogs are stolen whilst unattended in gardens, so make sure your outside space is completely secure and don’t leave your pets outside unattended for any length of time – it is far easier to be vigilant than follow up with a theft later on. Do not leave them tied up outside shops or alone in vehicles either.

If your dog is stolen, do report it to the police. Also make sure the loss is reported to the local dog warden and that of neighbouring councils. As with any lost dog, report to your microchip provider, all local vets and anywhere else the dog may be dumped or taken for treatment.

Good old British weather means we often have quite a diverse range of weather conditions throughout our winters, from gales and storms to heavy snow and driving rain.

In the summer:

If you usually stable at night and turn out in the daytime, it is definitely worth considering reversing the process in the height of summer, allowing for a cooler exercise period and shade / protection from the flies during the day. Do ensure there is a field shelter or tree to provide shade if your horse is outside all day, and don’t forget to provide plenty of cool water.

If you are entering any competitions and need to travel, try to leave early in the morning to avoid making the horses travel later in the day when the sun is hottest, as horseboxes can get very hot indeed, especially in traffic.

Corral away from standing water, as midges and other biters breed rapidly in wet areas in the heat, which can exacerbate sweet itch if your horse is prone.

Like humans, horses can burn.  Patches of white are the most exposed skin, so use a suitable sun cream.  Don’t forget to use insecticide in the stables to try and keep the worst at bay, and keep the mucking out up to date, with the muckheap at a safe distance from the stable.

Feed is important – a thin horse will suffer more in the cold, so make sure your horse’s diet is adequate.

Access to water is equally important, as standing water may well freeze in extreme conditions, so this must be checked very regularly in case the surface has frozen.

Protection for the weather is all important.  Horses do grow an extra layer of hair in preparation, and the natural pattern and condition of this hair helps insulate and repel moisture rather effectively.  Nonetheless, different breeds or senior horses may need extra warmth, so rugging may be advised.  You will need to check this, as horses overheat very easily, and sweating beneath them can cause hair loss and skin problems, so do check under the rug on a daily basis.  There are different varieties available for warmth or to keep water out –speak to your equestrian supplier about your horse and his needs.

Shelter is also important.  In the summer it provides shade, but a strongly built shelter can also offer protection from strong wind and driving rain for outside horses.  It will need to be mucked out regularly, and if it is used often, then clean bedding should be provided.

Keeping your horse comfortable whatever the temperature is important for health and welfare, and there are things you can do to make it easier.

Feed Guide

Equine feed is big business, and making sure your horse is in tip top condition is something of an obsession for most owners. Horses are creatures of habit, and as they naturally spend a vast amount of time grazing and chewing fibre, they have a natural, psychological need to spend a large proportion of their time chewing. Cereal feed is much faster to chew than hay or grass. This means that good quality feed must be paired with a good amount of roughage to prevent behavioural issues such as weaving or biting and of course keep the horse out of distress. The need to spend some 75% of their time chewing also means roughage is essential to avoid colic which could strike on a cereal only diet.

Chewing also acts to stimulate saliva, which is an important part of the horse’s digestive process and helps to avoid choke, so the majority of most horses calories need to come from fibre rather than grain. The saliva also helps to neutralize stomach acid and avoid possible gastric ulcers. Naturally moving slowly and grazing all day doesn’t use a huge number of calories, and grazing on hay or pasture keeps roughage moving through the digestive tract at a steady rate. This digestion also produces heat, allowing the horse to properly regulate their body temperature.

Every horse has different requirements, depending on his size, what sort of work he does and how he is kept. You also need to think about how much grazing time he has, and the quality of the forage, grass or hay you are feeding. If your horse spends the majority of his time turned out on good, lush pasture, then the amount of hay required will be less, whereas a horse spending a lot of time in stables will need very much more. A horse who changes activity levels will also need feed adjusting; be sure to do this gradually as changes in feed routine can lead very quickly to digestive issues, such as colic. This means it is a good idea to make sure you buy regularly and in quantity, as suddenly running out of feed means rapid change in diet.

Grass provides dietary fluids, whereas hay and cereal are very dry, so make sure that if the horse cannot be turned out to pasture you are adding succulent foods to the feed, apples, carrots and sugar beets. Water should be available in a clean water bucket (scrub this daily) and make it available in a position or fixed where it can be easily reached but not kicked over. Dehydration can be dangerous, so keep an eye on intake, and monitor his droppings to make sure they are not dry and hard as this is a good sign of dehydration.

HEALTHY HOOVES

The hoof of the modern horse is a complex structure made of keratinized (or cornified) tissue which surrounds a single toe on each leg. A complex bone structure is surrounded by the sensitive laminae, a layer of tissue which carries the blood to all parts of the hoof. Beneath this is the digital cushion, a pad of rubbery tissue which is the heel of the hoof and provides a shock absorbing cushion.

The horny laminae is the hard layer of hoof which has no feeling and is attached at the white line. The cornified layer is supportive and protective of the more delicate inner structure as well as providing grip, and the entire hoof, being comprised of a single digit responsible for bearing much weight over a small area, is an absolutely vital component of your horse’s health. Routine as well as emergency care is needed to keep your horse in tip top condition and with full mobility.

Maintenance care:

• Pick feet out each day with a hoof pick, and finish with a stiff brush to remove any smaller debris

• Get to know what’s normal for your horse in terms of temperature and digital pulse; any changes will alert you to potential infection, punctures or other problems

• Check shoes or unshod hooves for signs of damage or wear, overgrown or misshapen feet and whether a farrier is required

• Apply proper hoof oil every day or so during the warmer months to avoid cracks

• Have your horses seen by a farrier every 4 – 6 weeks

• Watch for lameness at all times, especially after a farrier visiting, who will need to be recalled if so. Biotin supplements can be given to horses susceptible to grass or sand cracks

• Check foot balance. This means the angle of the front feet should be approx. 45-50 degrees from the ground, and the rear at 50-55 degrees.

• Shoes should fit properly with no gaps, and the clenches need to be around 1/3 of the way up the hoof wall from the floor, straight and flush.

Hoof problems:

Laminitis

Laminitis is generally accepted to be symptom of digestive issues, and is a swelling or inflammation of the soft laminae tissues which is painful and can strike at any time. It can be triggered by grain or grass over eating, infection or trauma. Water

soluble carbohydrates in high amounts can be present in particularly lush pasture, and are a common cause. Symptoms include obvious pain, a reluctance to move or weight bear at the front, heel to toe walk and an increased sesamoid pulse. Laminitis should be treated as an emergency and a vet should be called straight away. The horse should be moved off of grass and into shavings or cardboard while waiting attention. Horses prone to laminitis should be on a properly regulated, high fibre diet, and need to be seen as regularly as necessary by your farrier.

Thrush

Horses can also be affected by thrush in the foot, a bacterial infection which can spread untreated to the delicate internal parts of the foot. It is usually caused by prolonged exposure to a damp environment such as wet fields or damp bedding. It cans cause lameness and a black, pungent discharge from the frog. The vet should be called out and will recommend treatment, which is usually regular scrubbing and the application of suitable eucalyptus oil or possible poulticing. Prevention is better than a cure, so make sure to keep your horses feet clean and scrubbed, with regular application of eucalyptus, especially in the winter months. If you field is prone to

waterlogging, ensure there is hard standing, and make sure bedding is dry and clean.

Seedy Toe

Seedy toe is a separation of the hoof at the white line, which starts at the toe and moves up the hoof wall as it grows, leaving a hole which becomes filled with dead tissue. It can happen due to laminitis or the toes becoming too long, and needs to be managed with regular farrier visits who will trim so that the hole can grow out.

Bruised Soles

Injury caused by impact or standing on a hard object can lead to bruising of the foot which can cause acute lameness and bruising. Movement should be restricted and standing should be soft, such as shavings or wood chip. Vets can prescribe anti inflammatories and should be called to check for any signs of possible infection or wounds.

Infection

Any lameness or obvious pain can be caused by infections in the foot, and the pus therein will need to be removed by the vet or farrier who will dig out and clean the infected area. This should then be poulticed to draw out any remaining infection before it begins to reach the leg. Your horse also may need antibiotics if the infection is severe.

Miniature Horses

The world of the miniature horse may be small, but it’s also charming. The British Miniature Horse Society characterizes the miniature as a perfectly scaled down version of a quality riding horse which measures less that 88cm at the withers. Height to weight ratio is not specific to breed but the perfect size equates to somewhere between Hack and Hunter. Although the size of an extremely small pony, miniatures retain their horse status with horse characteristics. These horses are not the result of dwarfism but are selectively bred, so that they are healthy and suitable for breeding themselves. Their small stature is combined with a friendly, curious personality, and they make good companionship animals, even being utilised as guide or assistance animals, but miniatures do retain their essential nature and so need the usual equine treatment. Nutritionally they have the same requirements, and their veterinary and general welfare is as important and time consuming of that of a full sized horse.

To be registered as a miniature horse by the BMHS, a foal must be bred from BMHS registered parents, although adult horses can apply for registration by assessment.

Miniature horses with their friendly nature and small size are frequently owned by those who may not be able to handle a full size horse or pony, so many are with very young riders or those with disabilities. Their tiny stature and good nature also makes them excellent companion horses for full sized horses.

They also make good competitors, being quick to learn, and very much enjoy dressage style exercise and being the focus of attention.

The BHMS has some excellent advice for those new to the hobby, especially when it comes to purchasing your first miniature horse. As with any such purchase, do ask your vet to take a look at the animal, to ensure you really are buying a properly healthy horse. If you are a very good judge of horseflesh but new to owning a miniature, this is probably still a good idea. Although miniatures are horses, it is a great idea to do some research and find out exactly what makes a good miniature to own. Try to see both parents if buying a foal which should give you an idea of your foals potential size and appearance.

Otherwise, common sense prevails. Look for an animal which is clean, not lethargic or low spirited, with a glossy healthy coat, clear eyes and nose. Feet should be properly trimmed, and will give you an indication of how well looked after the horse has been.

There are some very good breeders registered with the BMHS, and it really does make sense to make your first purchase from someone with the expert knowledge to guide you in the right direction.
