Themes
Intentionally or not, most weddings end up with a theme of sorts. Some may choose to go for a very obvious running theme, such a rockabilly style or vintage, while others develop a theme of their own around certain colours and touches. You may not want to go all out Lord of the Rings or Star Trek mad, understandably (we are not judging if you do!) but actually, deciding on a theme or concept for your big day can be very useful, as it will help making choices easier, and offer some obvious ideas to keep your day coherent and memorable. Choosing a solid theme will give you a focal point to begin making full on plans, and offers
6
a direction to target your research. The way to get the most from a wedding theme is of course to choose something which appeals to and showcases your personality; something which helps to tell the story of ‘you two’, the couple. Pinterest is a great starting point for ideas which you can adapt to suit yourselves, and is also an excellent way to collate ideas and begin to create a concept which is as individual as you are. There are things to consider when working on your theme. After all, an elvish style wedding isn’t going to work in a modern hotel, by the same token it might not be sensible to plan a 1950s extravaganza in a country house venue or
eastern style marquee. Aside from the venue, in order for a wedding concept to truly work, it needs to suit who you both are as a couple. A good idea would be to sit down and play some word association, writing down any central tenets of your relationship, your future plans, any cute in-jokes and more, which may well lead you naturally towards a cohesive idea. Perhaps looking at memorable trips or memories of outings or events will offer ideas, or a style of music or an era you are both drawn towards. Keep it realistic. Unless you have the venue of your dreams and an unlimited budget, it is
probably best not to get too carried away with the idea of a circus tent and the bride riding in on an elephant. Apart from the expense, this is a day you will look back on for the rest of your lives together and it may be that you might not appreciate the wackiest of themes in your golden years. If you plan to involve the guests in your theme, bear in mind that some may not appreciate the added expense and hassle of very specific clothing ideas, so do be prepared to be flexible.

Autumnal
For those planning an autumn wedding, this can make a truly stunning theme. Autumnal reds and yellows, with plenty of leaves and berries, touches of warmth and gold and a harvest festival of a feast for the wedding breakfast can bridge a lot of different ideas, encompassing a natural, rustic feel with luxury and depth of colour. Think bramble cocktails and rich, warm hues.
Christmas
Period From the roaring 20s to the sleek lines of the 1960’s, a period theme can give endless scope for ideas from fashion to food and accessories and everything in between. You don’t have to deck your bridesmaids out in flapper dresses, but an art deco theme can be elegant and sophisticated with a touch of the quirky. There are some fabulous vintage dresses available, and many collections feature the style if not the originality. Perhaps watch some old movies with a notebook and a bowl of popcorn, and let your imagination take over.
Although a festive wedding is not to everyone’s taste, an icy, frost shimmered wedding can give a subtle but ethereal effect or something altogether brighter and cheery. Berries and tartan, with bows, velvets and beautiful scarlets will make for a traditionally Christmassy event which should suit any venue, while icy crystals will work well with almost any colour palette.
Festival Fun
8
A truly lovely idea for a high summer wedding in a large marquee or for a garden wedding. Small touches such as tickets for invitations, chalk boards and pretty floral fabrics, wellington boots and flower garlands will give a wonderful outdoor feel. A large yurt or marquee with wild flowers, live music and an evening barbecue will make for a party no one will ever forget.
Tropical Bright’s
London Calling
A hip, mod style wedding is bang on trend right now, with fun, flirty 60’s dress, drainpipe trousers for the guys, some retro music and London style decorations will provide you with the backdrop for some beautiful black and white photography and bold makeup
English Afternoon Tea A theme to suit most venues, this one. Whimsical and romantic, or sharp and contemporary, a tea party enables you to express your personality as you prefer. For a summery, vintage feel, mismatched tea sets and crockery can be hired, and catering can be a classic salmon and new potato lunch, or perhaps a selection of cold cuts, cream cakes and of course cucumber sandwiches. Along with Pimms, champagne and a selection of cordials, this can be a pretty and delicate theme. If you prefer, artful patisserie, cocktails and a brighter colour theme keeps the afternoon tea feeling but adds a modern twist.
If you and your intended like the idea of a paradise getaway for you wedding but have limited funds or simply too large a family to accommodate, why not look at a tropical theme? Oranges, turquoise or hot pinks make for a bold and exciting theme, and you florist should be able to provide lots of ideas for exotic flowers, perhaps mixed with pineapples or other exotic fruit for table displays. Flamingo’s, birds of paradise, colourful cocktails and super salads will all help your day feel like a walk on the beach and transport you away from the mundane.
Black & White
Monochrome has been popular for quite some time, and with good reason. A coordinated, checkerboard style setting with elegant and sophisticated monotones has a timeless, expensive feel. Black and white movie star glamour from both guests and wedding party, with chic decorations and a glitzy feel, this is a perfect theme for the modern princess.

Vintage Style & Eco Friendly Weddings
10
Let’s face it, in the current climate; nobody can reasonably claim to be unaware of environmental issues, waste, food miles, and recycling. You might spend hours sorting your rubbish, cycle to work and upcycle your belongings, but did you know you help to keep your conscience clear when it comes to your wedding, too? With the current cost of a UK wedding averaging over £20,000, there are in fact more benefits to planning a ‘green’ wedding than just the feel good factor. More couples are choosing ecologically sound wedding themes, and there are now firms
specialising in helping to plan an environmentally friendly, cost effective occasion. The trend for retro, vintage style themed weddings ties in beautifully with this idea, allowing you to upcycle, reuse and make the most of every detail. Planning any wedding should be enjoyable, making for a day which you and your families will treasure the memory of for years to come, and a green wedding can be just that, with a little consideration and some thoughtful research. You don’t have to forsake a little luxury and unique touches. It might even set an example to your guests to go green in their own lives. If you want to try for yourselves, then your organiser and suppliers ought to be able to help, but here are a few simple tips in the meantime:
Upcycling / Vintage
Yes, for those of us whose parent married in the 70’s, upcycling our mothers dresses may not be entirely practical. Older dresses were often made of synthetic materials which have deteriorated, and styles may simply be too ‘out there’ but there are other vintage touches you can use. Some dress agencies now have vintage wedding wear available, and there are some fantastic dressmakers in our pages who will work with vintage fabrics, or re-cut a dress to suit your shape and style. Beautiful vintage jewellery is a neat idea, and you may be able to have a piece reworked by your jeweller, or perhaps turned into a stunning hair piece or comb.
Upcycling fabrics, jewellery and decorations means you can get some real sentimental value into the day too – consider upcycling old wedding fabrics into small purses for the bridesmaids, or put together some bunting for your marquee from no longer used family clothing and furnishings. Wedding stationers often have fantastic ideas for invitations, RSVPs and name tags created from recycled materials, and you could also talk to your florist about recycling glassware, charity shop china and homeware such as jars and bottles for your floral table decorations.
The Venue
Choosing a venue where you can hold the service, wedding breakfast and reception is a good start. Less travelling for all involved is obviously practical from a timing perspective, but of course will cut down on unnecessary fuel consumption as guests will not have to transport themselves. If that isn’t practical, then you can mention to your venue that you wish to keep the wedding green, and see whether they have any ideas!
Catering
Using fresh, local produce is a great idea. It will have travelled fewer food miles, be seasonal (and therefore at the peak of its freshness and condition) and help your local producers. Talk to your caterer about using good local meat, fruit and vegetables, or perhaps how they source wines.

Always the
Bridesmaid
12
Being chosen as a bridesmaid or even chief bridesmaid / maid of honour, really is an honour!
I’ve seen the film, the one with Katherine Heigl, where she gets to be the bridesmaid 27 times, and finally, happily, gets to dress all of the brides in the monstrosities they made her wear at the end for her own wedding. I even enjoyed it, and despite fitting into the ‘always the bridesmaid’ category very well, wasn’t offended by the sentiment. The thing is, choosing a bridesmaid is actually rather important to every bride, and being chosen as bridesmaid or even chief bridesmaid / maid of honour, really is an honour itself. I’ve also seen ‘Bridesmaids’, and don’t really recommend it as a guide for smart maid of honour behaviour. When it comes to choosing your wedding party, think carefully. Yes, it can be political – do you invite your oldest friend, sister, favourite cousin or the groom’s sister to be your maid of honour? Well, my advice is choose the person you need with you on your big day, the girl you can always rely on, who is organised, sensible, and knows you well. Planning a wedding can be emotionally exhausting, so choose bridesmaids who will be supportive and helpful when it all gets a little much! Flower girls are a great choice if you have young children in the family, but older bridesmaids will be a great help both with the little ones and to you on what will probably be a rather hectic day. Traditionally, the number of bridesmaids would likely reflect the family’s wealth and status much like ladies in waiting; but modern brides are free to choose as few or many as they would like. Bridesmaids duties vary, but traditionally she is responsible for ‘housekeeping’ duties on the day; attending the brides

hair and makeup, carrying small essential items, keeping veil and or train pristine and properly arranged. In the run up to the wedding, she will be a companion for dress shopping expeditions, giving honest but gentle advice. They may also be asked to help plan details of the reception, and of course a bridal shower or hen party. Bridesmaids can be a great help with tasks such as addressing invitations, or helping to choose favours. As chief bridesmaid at the wedding of my oldest friend, myself and the other bridesmaid also quietly worked together to keep family stresses at a distance to the couple, met and mingled with guests to give them some breathing space, and generally spent a lot of the wedding acting as female ushers along with the rest of the
wedding party. Bridesmaids are often responsible for the buying of their own dresses; and of course, much like Katherine Heigl’s eternal bridesmaid, probably won’t want to spend such a grand day with photographers, friends and family, in something they consider hideous. If you have more than one bridesmaid, choosing the dresses can be a rather stressful affair. Colour themes can prove tricky, as can certain styles. The best idea is probably to gather magazines and trawl the internet for eye catching themes and colour schemes, and then sit down with your bridesmaids to get some ideas of what they may like which will fit in with your ideas. Some brides choose uniformly matching
dresses, while other choose a particular colour but allow the bridesmaids to choose individual styles so they can decide on the most flattering cut. You could go Sex and the City style with contrasting colours, or if you prefer, choose a colour and allow the bridemaids to choose shades within a spectrum to coordinate but allow for some individuality. Jewellery makes for a very appropriate bridesmaid gift; because it means they can all have matching accessories, you can decide what will go best, and if there are slight discrepancies between the dresses, the jewellery will help to pull the bridesmaids together into a more coordinated look!

A Bride's Eye View There was once a scene in an episode of Friends, the one where Monica Geller explains to her brother that every girl dreams of her wedding, wandering round with a pillowcase on her head and dreaming of The Dress. Nice sentiment, but I am not sure just how many girls it applies to. Take me, for instance. I believe in the institution of marriage, I love my partner, I want to get married, but I wouldn’t say I’ve spent all my life dreaming of the wedding itself. Still, when my partner proposed, I was suddenly thrust into the world of wedding organisation, wedding politics, frills, lace and glitter. The wedding was free of any major comedic moments, punch ups or nail biting church gaffes, but the entire process was by turns funny, frustrating, exhausting, delightful and romantic. The Proposal: My 30th birthday, December. We took a trip to Madrid, which was freezing cold, but beautiful. We spent the day wandering around the Zoo at the Royal gardens, bundled up in unflattering bulk, with Rudolph-like noses and sensible shoes. Out of nowhere it seemed, himself asked me to close my eyes, dropped to one knee, and popped the question. Of course I said yes, and to the surprise of everyone, particularly me, a certain amount of blubbing ensued. We celebrated in a very expensive little restaurant in Madrid afterwards, which was just perfect; although saving a deposit for our first house did mean we couldn’t afford dessert! Decisions, Decisions… First step was a zillion wedding fayres, looking at an overwhelming array of dresses, flowers, venues and food; dragging my partner, mother, bridesmaids to be and anyone else who could face it along for the ride. We settled on a very nice local hotel for the reception, and after much wrangling, I finally agreed to a church wedding. In some ways I would rather have had a secular

We chose a church nearby to where we hoped to move, which fell through, that of course, is another story, but has meant we are now regularly attending church in a parish not too close to home. Of course, the interest in a traditional affair has only gone so far. Like many grooms, I’m sure, this has extended for the most part only as far as the venue, the suits, and of course the Stag Do of the Century. The guest list was a mammoth task. Much as we would have liked to invite the entire Home Counties, Auntie Maud’s neighbour and the cheerful fellow who works in the local corner shop, budget is fairly tight, and both of us preferred to keep the day for our nearest and dearest. My mother may not have spoken to several of her aunties in 15 years, but apparently I was risking the beginning of a new World War by not including them, or heaven forbid, inviting friends I see every single week instead.
mmm...
What drelsds I pick? shou
18
Once we had weeded through the list, we chose the invitations. The running colour theme was a nude champagne with black trimming, which of course led my ever vocal mother to rename them the ‘funeral invites’… The cars were booked, after a trawl through many quotes, and a long, cold day trailing down a muddy track to view the ones we wanted. I can only assume many couples plan their day like a royal visit – who knew the choices would be infinite? Music for the journey to the church, music for the journey to the reception, a choice of drinks….the list is endless.
The Dresses I think it is abundantly clear by now that I am not a frilly, layered dress type of a girl. Well, that was my assumption until I actually entered a bridal parlour. Suddenly, I was accosted by big, frill laden numbers with diamantes, pearls, flounces and beads. It didn’t take me long to get addicted to trying them on, and to the oohs and ah’s from accompanying relatives. I did eventually choose, and yes, it had frills. The bridesmaids were a challenge. Lovely as they are, one dropped out and the other two are chalk and cheese. Luckily, the perfect dresses were found quickly, fit beautifully, and suited both, although the shoes to match were a trauma all of their own! The Reception The table planning was much the same headache as the guest list. The politics are even more important here. If mum isn’t speaking to Auntie Mabel, then should mum’s neighbour sit at the same table with Auntie Maud? Has either of the bridesmaids been out with the best man? Do we put the permanently tipsy family member with
teetotaller Uncle Bert? Who knows? We didn’t quite thrown them all up in the air and pray for a good landing, and in the end, it all worked out beautifully. What, we wondered, to put on the tables? Flowers? Trivia? Sweeties? A book in case people need something to fend off sleep during the best man’s speech? Everyone wants their day to be memorable and unique, but this is a minefield. In the end, simple and elegant was the obvious choice, with lovely tableware and subtle flowers. The DJ was hired, and although the thought of agreeing the first dance song gave me chills; as we both have very different ideas on what constitutes a romantic song (I am right on this one, it is NOT Coldplay), he did a perfect job, keeping everyone flowing on to the dance floor with plenty of help from my ever willing bridesmaids. After all that organisation, we were slightly worried we would get the dreaded ‘bridal comedown’, but no, the relief of everything going so smoothly, the relaxation of the honeymoon and the satisfaction of knowing marriage really starts here has carried us through. Never again though!

Operation:
Get Gorgeous Big Day
It is never too soon to begin preparing for the big day, so here is our count down of body beautiful prep to get you in tip top condition for the big day.

12 Months: If you are planning to lose weight, now is a good time to start. Start early but gently, and you are less likely to lose motivation; where as charging full steam ahead into a fitness regime is unlikely to last the year. This also gives you plenty of time to tone up and get the dress sizing just right. Get into the habit of drinking lots of water and upping your fruit and vegetable intake, both of which will help your figure and be good for skin, hair and nails. Look at your skin care regime – if you have any skin care issues that need to be sorted, see a cosmetologist and make sure your regime is optimised for your skin. If you plan on any laser treatments or similar, a course of these can take up to 6 months to complete, so start researching now so that your skin will have time to settle down.
6 Months:
Diet Time!

Now is the time to think about your hair, especially if you want to grow it in preparation for an intricate up ‘do’ or long, flowing locks. Start researching styles and looking for a stylist – you will likely want your trial around 10 weeks before the day, so it would be good to get the length right, experiment with colour if you aren’t staying natural, and get a feel for trends and classic styles.
If you have started a fitness regime; take stock as to how well it is working, whether you want to up your game or you are nicely on track to be as fit and healthy as you require.

3 Months: Hopefully any skin complaints will now have settled and treatments finished, so check your regime and make sure your skin is clear. Keep up with a fresh diet and plenty of water, and don’t forget sunscreen to protect your skin. Book your hair trial now, and think about some deep conditioning treatment to keep your locks looking luscious. If you will be tanning for your wedding, it is advisable to book a trial run 6 or 8 weeks in advance to make sure you are happy with the colour and final result.

1 Months: Moisturise, exfoliate, and get gorgeous. Prepare your skin, especially elbows and knees so that your tan is perfect. If you plan to use holiday skin style lotion, a gentle, subtle tan, begin applying now so you can experiment with building the right depth of colour. Book your trial make up if you are using an artist rather than leaving it to the last minute, this will give your stylist time to ensure you are both happy with the final look.

Cut down on salt and heavy starchy foods for the final couple of weeks to leave you feeling cleansed and comfortable, and get plenty of rest to keep your mind and skin looking healthy and fresh.

Heavenly Scents
Of course brides pay a huge amount of attention to detail when it comes to their appearance, from tans, to bridal makeup, hair, and of course The Dress, but have you given much thought to the perfume you intend to wear?
come. Using scented candles and oils during the reception can add to this ‘scent aura’ affect, and there are some fabulously swanky scents available online to help you create the perfect impression.
Scent is a hugely evocative tool, allowing you to display your personality in a subtle and exciting way, one which creates an aura about you which will forever remind your guests of your special day, and will bring memories of your wedding to mind every time you catch a waft in years to
Personal scents are a different matter. Without getting into the complex layering used in perfume manufacture, they are created to offer an initial ‘top note’ burst of scent, and lingering, steady ‘drydown’, and then residual ‘base notes’ which cling close to your skin and create a base for the

higher notes in the perfume. Each person’s body chemistry responds differently to various ingredients and combinations. So if you do choose to try a new perfume, sample it properly in advance to give it time to warm to your skin and develop rather than just splashing it on on the day. Choose something which suits the feel of your day, whether it’s gentle white florals,

Florals are traditional, although modern gourmand (foodie) and spicy scents have their place too. If you are new to the world of scent and want to find out more about specific notes and niche house blends, www.fragrantica. com is an excellent starting point.
Here are our top picks for the big day: Estee Lauder Beautiful The Estee Lauder range has something for everyone, from deeply spicy and festive (think classic Youth Dew) to light and fresh. Beautiful is a fantastic bridal perfume, somewhere in the middle. This is a big, juicy white floral, with citrus notes in the top, and warmer, sweeter woods in the base. It smells expensive, feminine and romantic, with just a touch of zing from the citrus. A wedding classic.
DKNY Golden Delicious One of the latest versions of the DKNY Delicious range, Golden Delicious is an excellent choice for Spring brides. This is warmer than many of these apple scents, with a gentle white floral note accompanied by a touch of vanilla and wood. Good for those who want something fresh but interesting and not too fruity or heavy. Not a scent to make a bold statement but fresh, warm and unobtrusive.
Madonna Truth or Dare A good budget option, with excellent lasting power and projection especially for a ‘celebrity’ fragrance, Truth or Dare is a bold, ‘in your face’ tuberose and gardenia with a touch of vanilla. It is creamy, romantic, and slightly sombre, and would suit a white rose themed wedding. An expensive scent which conjures up old school glamour. Use this one sparingly though, as it is loud and distinctive with too many sprays.
25
Givenchy Amarige Amarige is another floral, but with deeper notes from a rich combination of white and yellow florals, with plumy and citrusy top notes and a warm, vanilla, amber and wood base. This is loud and punchy, but with an understated traditional elegance at the same time. Very much a love it or hate it scent, Amarige has many fans and is well worth a sniff, but sample well in advance of the big day to be sure.
Vera Wang Pink Princess Another ‘princessy’ scent, Pink Princess is a flanker to the very successful Princess line of scents and a more modern, fun alternative. A fruity floral, Pink Princess comprises of fresh and summery raspberries, zesty pink grapefruit and sweet marshmallow accompanied by honeysuckle and pink hibiscus for depth. This is an innocent, girly scent, fun loving and happy and would suit a pink, summery bride.
Dior Addict A heady, rich oriental with lots of creamy vanilla, gentle white flowers and a hint of spice. This is a long lasting, loud and confident vanilla, not a sugary sweet ice cream scent, and is well rounded and distinctive, with a touch of carefree riskiness making it perfect for an adventurous, grown up bride.
26
Nina by Nina Ricci Nina markets itself as a modern fairytale perfume, which would be just perfect for a fairytale wedding. This is sweet, also apple-y, but citrus apples with a rich, chocolatey praline note and might suit a younger bride with oodles of personality and some fun, princessy touches. Lasts very well, and is different enough to be distinctive.
Yardley Fragrances Finally, classic perfume house Yardley do an excellent range of soliflores (single flower scents), which would be perfect for younger bridesmaids or those looking for a heavy, rich English Rose.
Scent is a hugely evocative tool, allowing you to display your personality in a subtle & exciting way! 27

Traditions Ever wondered why we wear a ring or where the idea of something borrowed, something blue comes from? It seems an awful lot of these traditions are rooted in a time when wealth, family and fertility were the most important aspects of a marriage, when people married for position and heirs rather than love. Here is our run down on the ideas behind the customs and superstitions: Something old, something borrowed is a saying which dates back to Victorian times and refers to a variety of wishes for luck in marriage. Something old would be a link to the bride’s family and her old life, while something new signifies that she has chosen a new life and a new family, and represents luck and good fortune for the future. Something borrowed would usually be something worn already by another happy bride, to pass on her luck, while something blue is a tradition dating back much further. Blue traditionally represented purity and fidelity and would often be a ribbon worn by the bride, which has evolved, somewhat cheekily, into the blue garter which is traditional today. The silver sixpence of course is a symbol of wealth, worn in the shoe to encourage wealth and happiness in married life. When to marry has long been considered a source of luck. May is traditionally an unlucky month in the UK. In pagan times it coincided with a festival celebrated by unruly behaviour, and was considered an inappropriate time to marry. The Roman feast of the dead and festival of the goddess of chastity also fall at this time, which also suggested May was an unsuitable month, although the practice of marrying at the end of April to avoid this time no longer takes on much significance. The dress is the source of much ritual. As we all know, the groom should not see the bride in her dress before the event, as it was considered unlucky for either the bride or groom to catch a glimpse of
the future before it happened, and seeing the bride in the dress represented this future. There also seems to be a link back to traditionally arranged marriages, where the groom would not see the bride before the wedding as in fact the marriage was a financial and dynastic arrangement which should not be influenced by the appearance of the bride – this is also thought to be part of the reasoning behind the veil, dating back to the biblical story of Jacob who married Leah without realizing which sister she was. The colour of the dress has also long been significant, with white being bought into favour by Queen Victoria and symbolizing purity. The cake has been extant in many forms throughout history, and has taken on a ritual significance to the act of marriage. The cutting of the cake is the start of a joint future, and the top tier was traditionally kept to ensure fertility and to be eaten on the birth of the first child. Confetti translates in the Italian to sweets or comfits, but relates back to the tradition of scattering flowers, rice or grain to encourage both wealth and fertility onto the couple. Being carried over the threshold of the happy couples new home might have many explanations, from ideas of bad luck if the bride used her left foot first to the idea that in times gone by the husband probably abducted his bride and thus carried her into the house! The honeymoon is a very ancient ritual, with a variety of possible explanations. There is thought that as far back as ancient Babylon, couples drank a honey based drink to celebrate and symbolise sweetness and happiness. Again, in the times when a man might capture his bride, the moon, or month might be the period in which the couple hid from the bride’s father, and also have time away from the rest of the community, drinking honeyed wine to create a bond and hopefully guarantee fertility.

Tent Intensity
The wedding reception can be held in all manner of locations. You may have your heart set on a local venue or something alternative. It will need to suit your budget and be able to accommodate your guests and any special requirements. Hotels, pubs and outdoor areas are all among the locations used to stage your wedding breakfast and evening entertainment after the ceremony itself has taken place. A good option to investigate is marquee hire. Thanks to the skill of those who construct marquees and those who decorate them, whether this is all one service or you choose different providers, this type of covered outdoor space can make an excellent stage for your meal, a mobile disco or band, and any other form of entertainment you may be considering. Modern constructions provide all the amenities you could
30
possibly need, and are warm, well designed and comfortable.
Marquees provide ample protection from the elements, so wind or rain on the day need not spoil your big moment, obviously preferable to an open air gathering in unpredictable climes. Many marquees provide a specific atmospheric setting, with some fabulous eastern style themes. Novel shapes and decors can provide an interesting alternative to a more traditional, indoor venue. Their nature also means that you have more choice on size and layout than perhaps in an ordinary hall, and many marquee hire companies offer a bespoke service meaning that you can tailor make the space to suit your exact needs rather than having to rely on the constrictions of a fixed venue. In order to make sure you get the best marquee
important thing any wedding planners have to do- except for picking the right person to marry! The place should be beautiful enough to host this most formal of occasions, big enough to hold all your friends and relations, and have all the necessary facilities. for you in the ideal location, you should book as early as you can, as this is another aspect of wedding planning which generally happens very early in the process, meaning that if you leave it too late, you may end up with a venue that you are not entirely happy with. After all, there are plenty of other couples out there looking for wedding venues in which to stage their receptions so you are up against stiff competition. Choosing the venue is probably the single most
Size is important. It must be big enough, but it is also sensible to avoid wedding venues that are too big. The last thing you want is your wonderful wedding looking small in a space that is only half filled. It is necessary to find a balance between too crowded and too empty. Remember that there will be more people in the venue than just the guests – don’t forget the wedding singers, clergy, registrar, photographers, the drivers of the cars, catering staff, and all the other people who will be working to make your special day as wonderful as possible. Location is also something to think about,
31
Why not have a
especially if some of the guests will be travelling a long way. Country house hotels and similar venues that have accommodation on site solve any problems of this kind and it’s also nice for the guests to socialise together and enjoy the pre-wedding excitement, especially if the bride’s family are meeting the groom’s family for the first time. If you choose to have your marquee pitched on a site which doesn’t offer accommodation, then do consider choosing a location with does have suitable options nearby, and it is a thoughtful touch to provide your guests with a list of possible options should they decide to stay over. Avoid taking the venue’s word that the facilities are what they should be. Ask for references or search the internet for opinions on the place before putting down a deposit so you can be
32
absolutely sure that everything you need will be right there on your wedding day. Reputable firms will be happy to provide references and should have a large portfolio for you to view and decide on the best scheme. Should you decide to opt for a marquee, you can choose an Arabian tent, a huge tepee, or a more traditional style, so look around and see what’s available and above all, enjoy! Wet Weather Weddings Outdoor weddings can be stunningly beautiful, especially in the warmer months. There is nothing quite like a wide green lawn and a rose bower to complement a lovely white wedding dress and all the gentlemen’s crisp suits. Depending on the choice of wedding venue it can lend a superbly formal, almost Victorian air to the occasion or a relaxed and casual elegance. Some couples opt for a more natural, country style affair, with a pastoral feel which can be a delightful theme for an autumn or spring wedding. This idea can work very well, however of course
marquee for your reception! this is Britain, and the weather isn’t always on the side of the prospective bride and groom. For every wedding that enjoys a soft green spring morning or gloriously sunny summer day there is one where grey clouds threaten on the horizon for days before, only to dump inches of rain on the day when it’s least convenient, and the uncertainty of British weather means that planning an outdoor wedding can feel like a risky proposition. The weather is the last thing you should be worrying about on your wedding day, when there is so much to think about - will the wedding entertainment show up on time, is the food going to be suitable for absolutely everyone, whether or not the best man actually has the ring in his pocket as he should, and not least, the life-changing significance of getting married. So should you give up on the idea of the perfect, outdoor wedding? Not necessarily. The answer actually might be more interesting – you need in this case to have a well prepared ‘Plan B’ available, one which is organised enough to ensure you can make a snap decision on the day if the weather
does in fact rain on your parade. Marquee hire is always a good idea. If it’s sunny the drinks and nibbles can be served in there and if it’s not sunny, you have a place to walk down the aisle that’s under cover. There are plenty of practical, beautiful and ornate marquees available to choose from.

The Wedding
Breakfast A large part of choosing your venue and deciding on the fine details will rest on your choices with regards to catering. The meal is a very important part of the day, and likely a large factor in forming your guests memories and impressions of the whole experience. The usual wedding itinerary means a wedding breakfast for the guests, followed by champagne and the speeches, the giving of gifts to the wedding attendants and reading of telegrams. The reception then goes into a second stage as an evening event, with further guests arriving and music/entertainment. If you can, provide your guests with details of overnight accommodation at the venue or locally so that they can really let their hair down and enjoy your big day! Most smart venues employ a special events organiser who will help you to make the most of the day, and tell you exactly what is possible and within your budget. You will also be able to discuss menus, drink decisions and their capacity for numbers and entertainment. Choose a menu that pleases you, but remember that you do need to cater for all – ask for any dietary requirements to come back with the RSVP’s for your invitations and let your caterer know if they will need to have some ideas on standby. An experienced venue planner will be able to give you ideas as to what tends to suit the season – after all you probably won’t want a steaming casserole followed by apple crumble on a boiling day in August! Usually venues have set menus from which to choose your courses, or if you are using outside catering, they will make course or platter suggestions to suit, and can advise on what is a popular choice likely to be enjoyed by
all. A running fork buffet can be appropriate for a summer wedding, or you might prefer something very formal, as many people do, so discuss timing and your ideas with your coordinator at the venue to see what suits. Some venues suggest canapés at arrival – delicious little nibbles to consume with the welcome drink to provide a welcome distraction to lengthy photographic sessions; which is also a good idea if the venue is some distance from the ceremony, as it can take people time to filter in. A running buffet or fairly substantial canapés later in the evening are an ideal choice to stop the guests getting too hungry – again as it is a long day this will provide another dimension for your day guests, and don’t forget those who will be attending the evening only – don’t cater just for those who have been at the meal! A good tip is not to start the evening food too late – for those who have been with you all day, they may need to eat again early to soak up the celebrations, and those who are evening only guests may well have foregone a meal to reach you in time, so don’t leave it too late. Many venues now offer an evening hog roast or barbecue food which is an increasingly popular option, and there are many outside caterers offering similar who will be happy to help – these make an interesting change for perhaps the evening food at a summer wedding although of course the choice is yours. You can also hire chocolate fountains for dipping strawberries or marshmallows, or champagne or punch fountains for the grownups.
35
The meal is a very important part of the day, & likely a large factor in forming your guests memories & impressions of the whole experience. The same applies to drinks – it is acceptable to provide wine only and champagne for the toasts, but don’t forget that there needs to be non alcoholic options available. If you are inviting children, it’s a lovely idea to provide a kids option too – perhaps a fruity no alcohol cocktail. A useful idea is to leave some money behind the bar, and then when that is gone, the guests can pay for their own drinks. The seating plan can be a minefield, especially in today’s society with remarriages and step families. The sensible plan is simply to use your common sense and avoid any placements which are likely to result in awkwardness, and
36
don’t stick to traditional layouts at the cost of your guest’s enjoyment. If you know there will be difficulties, then involve your parents in assembling the plan as it will make them feel wanted and give you a better of idea of who not to place next to whom! Sometimes a children’s table can be very helpful for the older children and can also avoid any family difficulties arising from step family situations. Sometimes unlikely placements can be a good idea, mixing families and giving more available space for those who may not want to mix. This meal will probably be your first chance to relax and enjoy yourselves with your friends and family, so leave plenty of time to enjoy it!
37
Children at
Weddings
38
Quite often, the question of whether to include children at weddings can become a difficult one. Family expectations, venue limitations, sheer numbers and the ambience of the day are all factors to consider. Whether you plan a very sophisticated adult day or something a bit more family friendly is of course key, and while some people see the children as an integral part of what is mainly a family event, others will see noise and disruption instead! If you have your own children, then of course they will be included, but this doesn’t mean you have to open up the invites to anyone – it is perfectly reasonable to restrict this to children within both of your immediate families, plus babes in arms. Let people know there are budget and / or space limitations, and don’t feel guilty – this is your day, and besides, many of your friends may welcome the idea of a day out without their children in tow. It can be best to make exceptions for those with very small children, mums who just may not be able to leave a nursing baby behind for example. Which ever way you decide, make it clear on the invites. As a parent, some people assume invitations include the family, especially if it is something seen as a family event, so include names on invites. It is awkward, but if you are excluding children, it isn’t a bad idea to include a small line about it being a child free day. Certainly easier than a dozen querying calls!
HERE ARE OUR TOP TIPS FOR ENSURING THE DAY STAYS MAGICAL FOR THE KIDS!
Ceremony: Feel free to give those with small children a gentle and polite reminder before hand about feeling free to quietly step out with a crying baby. If you have flower girls or child ushers, do make sure to practice where they will need to stand and how you expect them to walk, as their expectations can be rather different! Keep those participating close to their parent so that they can step in unobtrusively if there are any issues. Kids meals: Do offer a child friendly menu option. A wedding is a long day, and an awful lot of children will turn their noses up at your beautifully presented terrine of chicken, but will happily tuck into a nugget (or goujon if you prefer!), keeping over hungry kids from decimating the evening buffet. A child friendly ‘mocktail’ in plastic cups is also a good idea. Seating: Seat families together. Kids tables look fun, but can be a nightmare for supervising adults, and if left unchaperoned can descend into a bit of chaos! There can be long periods of inactivity for small children at weddings, so making sure they are with parents or even a paid minder at this point should make things easier. Entertainment: A magician, some bubbles and confetti or even a simple colouring crayon station will keep kids occupied during the parts they may find dull, such as speeches, or consider non messy little kits such as drawing paper and pencils, dot to dots or similar as wedding favours to fiddle with at the tables. Bear in mind that when the music starts, the littlest children are often first to charge onto the dance floor! Join in and laugh for some wonderful pictures, and get your DJ to throw in some kid friendly tunes at the beginning to tire them out before the party really gets going!

Get Me
To The Church
>>>>>>On Time… Wedding planning will always be a complicated task. Ensuring the day goes off without a hitch requires excellent planning skills and a head for detail. From favours, entertainment and food to the minutiae of timing, table planning and more, there are plenty of options (infinite really) to consider. One vital issue that needs to be addressed is how you will get to the venue in which you are to get hitched. Whether this is a church, hotel, registry office, stately home or a more modest location, you will no doubt want to arrive in style. This may well require careful thought and some meticulous planning in place to ensure you get the best option for you and your venue. Don’t forget that you may need several journeys - for the Groom, the Bride and her father, and the bridesmaids. Will the mother of the bride also need transport? Will you then need transport from the service to the reception, and will that be for all the same people? If it is, how far is the reception venue? If you only have one vehicle but a 30 minute round trip, you may need extra vehicles to transport the wedding party, so think carefully. Thankfully, there are many options when it comes to wedding car hire and, providing you make your choice wisely, you are sure to be happy with the results. Many firms provide vintage motorcars of all sorts of types, from classic Rolls Royces to funky American classics. You could opt for a carriage, either closed or open topped, although if you are considering a traditional open carriage do remember that this may not be suitable if the weather is not at it’s best on your day. For this reason it is a good idea to check with your provider if they have contingency options should the heavens decide to open on your day, whatever time of year it may be. There are also some less traditional ideas, from London Buses to fire engines - whether you want something romantic and fairy tale themed or perhaps have a more zany idea in mind, there are a plethora of providers to choose from, so check out our ‘Arriving in Style’ transportation listings for further ideas, and remember, getting your big day off to a great start by choosing the best transport is important as this will set the tone for the rest of the events and means you will be in a good mood.
