how to navigate your

finances with confidence

T

he hot housing market, rising inflation, the ongoing pandemic, and an increasingly complex and digital financial marketplace can sometimes make money decisions feel overwhelming. You may be surprised to learn that just feeling more confident can actually help you make better choices. Here are some simple, practical things you can do to boost your financial confidence when it counts.

shop around

Compare products and services from different providers to better understand your options. Whether you’re considering credit card options or renewing your mortgage,

you don’t have to stick with the same bank where you have your chequing account if you can get a better interest rate or product for your needs elsewhere. Make an informed decision about your options by using unbiased financial tools such as the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC)’s online credit card comparison tool and mortgage calculator.

just-in-time knowledge

Major life events – living as a couple, buying or selling a home, having children, getting divorced – can involve the most important and complicated financial decisions. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never budgeted for a wedding or saved for a

child’s post-secondary education before. The best time to brush up on your knowledge is while you’re planning for these milestones.

have a plan

Whether you’re stressed about debt, saving for retirement or want to build your financial resilience in case of an emergency, a plan will give you peace of mind. You don’t need to be an accountant or financial planner to set goals and track your income and expenses. Try FCAC’s budget planner, financial goal calculator or credit card payment calculator, which are all free and easy to use. resolutions that are achievable all year long

T

he start of the year is a great time to re-evaluate our lifestyle habits. This includes the food we eat, so we can make sure that we’re nourishing our bodies. While it can seem hard to get started, try these simple and achievable resolutions for the new year.

incorporate more whole grains

While many of us grew up eating white bread at home, whole grains are the more nutritious alternative. In fact, whole and multi grains are better sources of fibre and nutrients like iron, folate and selenium. Look for bagels, English muffins and sliced breads in tasty whole grain varieties.

rethink dieting

The new year is synonymous with hopping on the dieting bandwagon, trying out whatever is trendy (but not necessarily better for us). While you may see fast results, studies show people who go on restrictive diets usually end up gaining more weight back than they lost over the long run. Instead, focus on making better choices everyday, like choosing whole grain breads versus muffins or having fruit for your midday snack.

Research shows that cooking at home is an effective way to improve diet quality, lose weight and prevent diabetes.

choose sustainable ingredients

As you’re reassessing the impact of your food on your body, take some time to think about the planet too. Look for food from local sources and companies with brands that have strong sustainability practices.

cook more meals at home

Many of us grew tired of our own cooking during the pandemic, and with much of the world reopening and the indulgences of the holidays, it’s been tempting to rely on takeout and restaurants more. But research shows that cooking at home is an effective way to improve diet quality, lose weight and prevent diabetes. So, search for some new nutrient-dense recipes you can cook yourself and get back in the kitchen. ■ — News Canada January 27–February 24, 2024

TECH

14

3 ways W

hether you’re looking to catch up with old friends, keep up with your kids’ lives or do just about anything these days, it often seems like you have to embrace technology. Even if that makes you want to hide under a rock, it’s never too late to brush up on your digital skills. Here are three ways to boost your technological know-how.

ask around

Don’t be shy, chances are your friends have similar tech questions as you. Bringing up your questions with friends can reveal gaps in each other’s knowledge that complement one another – and you might be able to teach each other

4Rent.ca

to become more tech savvy

something new. If you are patient and ready to listen and learn, your friends and family will likely be more willing to show you the ropes of a group chat app, how to order something online or how to change the settings on your email inbox.

learn to keep safe

Some of us avoid taking advantage of tech tools because we’re nervous about getting scammed or making some costly or embarrassing mistakes. While the internet, social media and other tech tools are not entirely without risk, once you know what to watch out for you can keep yourself safe. So, get informed through reputable sources and take precautions like setting secure passwords and not clicking on links or attachments.

practice

Many of us learn best by doing, and many of our skills get rusty without practice. So, grab your device or go online and see what you can figure out. Start small. Look through the settings on your cellphone and check out legitimate resources online for tips and support. ABC Life Literacy Canada is one non-profit organization that has a variety of resources designed to help adults at any stage get started with digital technology, including free online courses. By taking a few simple steps to engage with technology, you’ll be up and running in no time. Find more information and free resources at abcconnectforlearning.ca. ■ — News Canada

how to find

family history info for free F

amily history is a world many of us would love to explore. However, a mistaken belief that it’s an expensive hobby requiring pricy subscriptions or trips to a special library are holding back many would-be genealogists. Fortunately, you don’t necessarily need to pay for the information you need. The Canadian census is one of the best tools available for research into family history. And you can find it all for free. Nearly all the available Canadian censuses are freely accessible through Library and Archives Canada, and the censuses from 1825 to 1926 can be individually searched using an online database. You can learn many things from the census. But remember that every census is different because the questions change from census to census, as do the possible responses people could give. These changes reflect how Canadian society has transformed from one generation to the next.

In general, since 1871 you should be able to track your ancestors by the following information: • age • sex • marital status • country or province of birth • religious denomination (after 1951, questions about religion have only been asked every ten years) • ethnic origin • occupation • education The earliest censuses might be missing certain information since weather or environmental disasters could make it impossible for all the information to be collected back then, or original records may have been lost to fires or water damage. Family history can teach us so much about how our lives came to be. While it’s not always easy to find the information you want, finding free resources like the census can sure make it easier. The census is a great place to start. The 2021 Census starts on May 3. Find more information or complete your census at census.gc.ca. ■ — News Canada

4 ways to practise

whole home safety P ractising whole home safety includes having proper protection against the threat of smoke, fire and carbon monoxide (CO). However, just over one in three Canadian residents who experienced a residential fire had a working smoke alarm in their home, according to Statistics Canada. First Alert, a fire safety brand, shares the following safety tips to help you protect the moments that matter most with your family:

prepare a home emergency kit

Being prepared in case of an emergency includes having an emergency kit on hand. In addition to basic necessities such as a first-aid kit, water, a flashlight and medical supplies, make sure your kit includes batteries, a multi-tool, blankets and non-perishable food.

install and maintain your alarms

Proper smoke and CO alarm maintenance and replacement are essential to help keep your home and family protected. The National

4Rent.ca

January 27–February 24, 2024

Fire Protection Association recommends installing alarms on every level of your home, including the basement, and in every bedroom. Test your alarms regularly by pressing the test button and waiting for the alarm to sound. Replace the batteries at least every six months, or make maintenance easier with a two-in-one smoke and CO alarm such as the First Alert 10-Year Battery Combination Alarm, which means you don’t have to replace the batteries or deal with late-night chirps for a decade.

equip your home with fire extinguishers

Beyond smoke and CO alarms, having fire extinguishers is an important element of home safety.

Place fire extinguishers on every level of your home, as well as in common spaces like the kitchen and garage. When selecting a fire extinguisher, look for devices designed to combat common household fires caused by wood products, grease and electricity.

create and practise a home escape plan

In the event of a home emergency like a fire, it’s important to have a home escape plan. Together with your family, identify two exits out of every room and designate a meeting spot outside of your home. Practise your plan at least twice a year to help ensure every family member remembers what to do. ■ — News Canada

moving? how to find the right neighbourhood

T

he search for the perfect house begins with the search for the perfect neighbourhood, which can be daunting. Searching for something so open-ended and with so many variables can be an overwhelming task, but it doesn’t have to be. You just have to know where to start your search and where you can take it from there. Get ready to find that dream neighbourhood. Search yourself. You can’t really know what to look for in a neighbourhood until you know exactly what you want. Make a list, take your time. Write down the things that really matter to you. Decide priorities. Order your list from most

Search the stats. While you hunt at street level, make sure you take your research to a bird’s-eye view at the same time. You would be amazed at the kinds of things you can learn about a neighbourhood just from its census data. How old are people there? How many kids are in the neighbourhood? How much are the average monthly costs to live there? What languages are spoken in the neighbourhood? Combine your research with your street-level hunting and you’ll soon find yourself walking through the perfect neighbourhood for you and your family. Find more information at www.statcan.gc.ca/census. ■

Search the streets. Don’t underestimate the importance of this step. You really can’t know a neighbourhood until you’ve walked its streets at several different times of day. Get a feel for the level of traffic and noise, decide if you’re okay with it. See how the streets feel. Are they lit enough at night? Would it be nice to go for a run through your neighbourhood? 5 tips for

dealing with inflation F our in 10 Canadians report that money is a daily concern for them, and one third of low-income Canadians admit to worrying about money almost constantly. With inflation at its highest level in more than 30 years, it’s more

important than ever for us to become financially literate. Here are 5 money saving tips to help keep you afloat.

build a budget

The first step towards financial security is to create a budget

that you can stick to. Your budget should track all of your income and expenses, including food, housing, transportation and entertainment. If your monthly expenses exceed your income, you’ll either need to cut back on spending or find ways to bring more money in.

TIPS

Hold off on purchasing bigger ticket items until they go on sale. Most retailers have recurring sales promotions on certain items a daily indulgence that makes you happy, look for other small ways to cut back that can add up to big savings.

avoid high-interest payments

cut back on frivolous spending

It’s become a bit of a cliché to advise people to stop buying takeout coffees to save money. And it’s true: with tax and tip a coffee can easily cost $5 to $10. But don’t make yourself miserable. If that cup of java is

Credit cards are a handy way to pay for things and can even earn you cash back or other rewards. But the interest rate on credit cards is very high, often 20 per cent or more. And, if you don’t pay off your full balance monthly, the interest is charged from the date of purchase. If you can’t pay your credit card bills in full, see if you qualify for a line of credit. These have much lower interest rates so you can start paying down your debt.

use coupons

Using coupons is a great way to lower the cost of staple items such

as groceries, diapers, personal hygiene products or to splurge on an occasional fast-food treat. In addition to the printed coupons that come in the mail or newspapers, there are numerous online resources for coupon clipping.

shop on sale

Hold off on purchasing bigger ticket items until they go on sale. Most retailers have recurring sales promotions on certain items. A sales associate may be able to let you know when the next cycle will start. And make note of upcoming seasonal sale periods such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday. MOVERS

avoid common

packing mistakes

M

BY CHUCK RESNICK

ore than four million people moved residences in Canada last year, many of whom did the packing themselves. For some, it works out fine; others have problems resulting from a lack of foresight, poorly packed boxes and inexperience in loading moving trucks. Here are a few tips to help you avoid finding damaged items at your destination:

purchase boxes from your mover

The most common packing mistake we see are people getting free boxes at the grocery or liquor store and then putting too much weight in them. For example, using a large box to pack books and magazines may make it too heavy to lift, and the box might break during the move due to the weight. Use this rule of thumb: the heavier the item, the smaller the box. Be choosy about your boxes; free boxes from a grocery store that have been used to ship produce could contain insect larvae that may transfer to your belongings.

be realistic about how many boxes you need

Depending on how long you have lived in your current location, you will most likely underestimate

your boxes requirement. Often, we hear of renters who think 40 or 50 boxes will be enough, and then realize they need upwards of 80 boxes, two days before moving day.

…embrace exercise this winter

Staying active is important for our health, but it can be tough to begin and to keep it up – especially when it’s cold or snowy outside. Speak with a health-care professional for the right advice if you have a health condition like arthritis, and consider low-impact and joint-friendly exercises that improve endurance, strength, balance and flexibility. Indoor options can include swimming, using a stationary bike or doing yoga. Find more tips through Arthritis Society Canada’s accessible videos. arthritis.ca/living-well

own and need more support. If feelings of stress or worry are long-lasting and are having a negative impact on your daily life, know there is help. You can access free mental health support at anytime from

It’s no easy feat to find the job that is right for you. So, dig in deep and consider your ideal work-life balance, what you find meaning in and what benefits you want and need. For instance, if you cherish having evenings free, a nine-to-five job might be right for you. But, if you prefer a rotating schedule that involves helping others and building meaningful relationships, you might consider a career like nursing. Indigenous Services Canada is hiring nurses right now. canada.ca/nursesforfirstnations

…finally quit smoking

When it comes to smoking, it’s common to need a few tries to quit.

And that’s okay. It’s continuing to try that will get you there in the end. If your resolution is to quit smoking, know that it’s possible and that there are plenty of free quit-support services available to you. There is more information and advice from real people and their success stories online. canada.ca/quit-smoking

…stick with a beauty routine

Go back to basics and make your skin routine right for the season. Limiting hot showers, drinking enough water and using a moisturizer according to your skin type – thicker for drier skin and lighter for oily skin – will help keep your skin healthy and glowing all winter long. You can find up-to-date information on many health-related topics from established Canadian health experts at online resource Care to Know. caretoknow.ca

… upgrade your skills

One of the best ways to learn something new is to go through mentors, support groups and trusted sources. If, for example, you want to learn how to use new digital tools at the office or become more tech-savvy around the home, non-profit organizations like ABC Life Literacy Canada offer free resources and workshops that cover a wide range of digital topics.? abcconnectforlearning.ca ■ — News Canada January 27–February 24, 2024
