how your T taxes could be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic 4Rent.ca

February 13–27, 2021

his year’s tax season is unique and could also be very confusing, especially with several measures introduced by the government to assist those who had to stop working or have been laid off. Though most benefits are taxable, many weren’t taxed at the source (meaning the government didn’t hold back an amount of money to go towards your taxes), so that money will be calculated and owed when you do taxes this year. To help you

11

THE VIEW

Though most benefits are taxable, many weren’t taxed at the source, so that money will be calculated and owed when you do taxes this year.

prepare your taxes, here are some insights from Lisa Gittens, senior tax expert from H&R Block:

The amount owed will depend on your 2020 marginal tax rate, taking into account all other income earned that year. Your marginal tax rate is the amount of tax you would pay on an additional dollar of income and is based on the rates of tax applied to a given level of income, both federally and provincially.

CERB

CRSB

For those who received the Canada Emergency Response Benefit, the government will be issuing a tax reporting slip for 2020 outlining the total amount of funds received. This must be reported as income on 2020 returns, and since no tax was deducted at the source, dues may need to be paid on these amounts.

If you are self-employed without a paid sick leave program, you may be eligible for the Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit, which provides $500 per week for up to two weeks if you were unable to work due to illness or were required to self-isolate. This benefit is available from September 27, 2020 to September 25, 2021. The

deadline for applying for any oneweek period is 60 days after the end of that period. Tax is withheld at the source for the benefit so any amount received through the CRSB is taxable.

CRCB If you have had to miss work to care for a family member due to COVID-19, you may be eligible for the Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit. This benefit is also available from September 27, 2020 to September 25, 2021. As with the CERB and the CRSB, the CRCB is taxable and subject to a 10 per cent withholding tax. If you are concerned about preparing your own return, an H&R Block tax expert can give you added confidence and peace of mind. ■ — News Canada February 13–27, 2021

id you know that if you place an item in your bin that can’t be recycled, it can cause significant problems in the recycling process. Throwing these things in

the garbage isn’t always a solution either. To help you do your part for the environment, check out these items that don’t belong in the recycling bin and learn what you can do with them.

17

INFO YOU CAN USE

plastic furniture, storage bins and toys Although they’re made of plastic, bulky items like tables, chairs and toys don’t belong in the recycling bin. Most communities have specialized depots that collect these items. If your community doesn’t offer this service and the item is in good condition, clean it thoroughly and donate it to a local not-for-profit or a friend.

batteries Although batteries don’t belong in your municipal recycling bin, they can and should be recycled. Many batteries contain materials that can be harmful to the environment and wildlife if they end up in landfill, and the salvaged materials from old batteries can be used to manufacture new products like bikes, stainless steel water bottles and small appliances. To recycle your old batteries, Call2Recycle offers convenient battery drop-off locations across Canada.

paint cans Paint is considered a hazardous waste material in many provinces and should not be disposed of through the regular waste stream. But empty paint cans can be recycled in many communities. Check with your municipal recycling depot or local paint store for information on how to dispose of your old paint.

household items

black plastic takeout containers Optical sorting machines at recycling plants can’t detect black pigment, so they are unable to sort black

plastic items. That’s why it’s very important not to place your black plastic takeout containers in the recycling. Put these containers directly in your garbage.

Common household items like pots and pans, drinking glasses and metal and plastic coat hangers should not be placed in recycling bins. If you’re moving or doing a renovation and are getting rid of items in good condition, be sure to donate or sell them. Anything that’s broken or damaged should be put in the garbage. More information on battery recycling can be found at call2recycle.ca. ■ — News Canada February 13–27, 2021

10 THINGS

BY CHUCK RESNICK

your move wil not do

When you hire a moving company, it is important to understand what services the firm can and cannot provide. At Two Men and a Truck – Canada, we pride ourselves on accommodating our clients in every possible way. But there are some requests that pose problems. There are 10 common issues that most movers won’t do, or are forbidden to do by law.

1

move containers of fuel or hazardous materials

experience, most customers move plants themselves.

Gas-powered items such as lawn mowers that are not emptied of fuel cannot be moved by your moving company. This is in accordance with Ontario’s Health and Safety Act and Hazard Materials Act. The law prohibits us from transporting these types of goods.

move items larger than we have the ability to do

Moving animals takes special care, and movers are not willing to take responsibility for pets during a move. You are best to arrange for them to be somewhere else on moving day, and then ease them into their new surroundings yourself.

3 2 6

move live plants

Many movers, including our company, have their own guidelines about this. Securing plants takes a level of special treatment that we are not prepared to offer. If customers need advice on how to move plants, we can help them find companies that are equipped to do so. In our

4Rent.ca

5

moving animals

February 13–27, 2021

When we see items that are too big and bulky for us to handle, we will let you know. Upright pianos, for example, are incredibly heavy and usually require heavy-duty dollies and a truck with a lift gate. We can definitely help you with any size of piano. Massive wall units can also present challenges. We can help you find the right firm to move those specialty items, if required.

move personal valuables

4

It makes sense that small valuables like jewelry, stocks, bonds and cash are items you should transport yourself.

provide insurance coverage for all items Ontario’s Conditions of Carriage requires movers to insure items at least 60 cents per pound. If our coverage does not include antiques or works of art, we can arrange it through our Insurer as long as these items are itemized upfront. Your homeowner insurance policy may also have a rider for goods in transit.

23

7 8 10 9 rearrange your furniture

Sometimes people ask us to rearrange their furniture at their destination, which adds to the time estimated for your move. We are happy to provide you with this service.

install major appliances

We are neither plumbers nor electricians. If you require installation of your major appliances, arrange to have those professionals help you during your moving week.

stop the clock because of a change on your end

We get paid from the time we leave our facility until the time we return. If you change the parameters of your contract or something unex-

pected happens on your end to cause a delay, the move continues on as planned but will likely extend longer than your estimate.

load pre-packed boxes, items into a storage pod

We do not do “load only moves.” If someone else is driving the vehicle and the goods are not under our control, we can’t take responsibility for the condition of the goods at their final destination. All of the above help ensure that your possessions arrive at the other end in one piece, with the safety of you, your family and the movers in mind. And, that’s our job! Visit twomen.ca to find a location near you. ■

the importance of sticking to your

new year’s resolutions during a pandemic

A

new year is here, which can mean that many of us will be making resolutions or goals. Research shows us that people who set goals and make resolutions regarding sustainable better lifestyle habits are more likely to achieve success than those that don’t make such resolutions. While there is still a pandemic going on, a great resolution to set for 2021 is to make a goal around planning for future medical care. One way to do this is with Plan Well Guide, an accessible free online tool focused on helping Canadians think

ahead and make a plan should serious illness occur. When it comes to planning during a pandemic, it may be helpful to be aware of recent evidence regarding advance care planning interventions. Research shows how thinking ahead and preparing in advance regarding serious illness will significantly improve people’s mental well-being, as well as improve the mental well-being of a substitute decision-maker. Imagine how helpful it would be to both you and your family if you already have plans in place for life-and-death decisions. As the pandemic continues, some of us may need help to stay on

track with our plans or resolutions. Here are some strategies to help stay motivated: • Set small goals each day • Prioritize time each day, not just for work, but also for self-care • Give yourself a break; it’s alright to not always be productive and you don’t have to be perfect To help you stick with your resolution to plan regarding serious illness, there are additional tools available at planwellguide.com, including nudges and email reminders. Your future self and your family will thank you for taking the time to prepare in advance. ■ — News Canada

5 garden-to-table herbs to try

H

erbs are the perfect way to freshen up your garden and dinner plate. A few minutes is all it takes to pick up some herbs at the store and start an edible garden that will add a seasonal kick to your meals. “Herbs are easy to grow, require little maintenance and are equally at home on an apartment balcony as they are in a backyard garden,” says Sonya Palermo, gardening expert. “I love that I can pick up some topquality potted President’s Choice herbs with the other ingredients for a mouth-watering dish while I’m at my local grocery store.”

parsley This herb tends to grow well in containers as well as in the garden. Whether it’s Italian or broad-leaf parsley, it’s best to plant towards the end of May to avoid late-season frost. It pairs well with all red and white

meats and tastes especially good with cucumber, avocado or carrots.

chives This easy-to-care for herb grows abundantly without maintenance and the taste is sure to impress the young gardeners in your family, who can snack on it during cool summer evenings. Chives’ peppery flavour is the perfect finish for steak, chicken or lamb and they go marvelously well with potatoes, green peas or radishes.

rosemary This is an excellent choice for container gardening since it appreciates its own space. Be sure to avoid overwatering and provide appropriate separation from other plants to keep the leaves free of mildew. Lamb, pork, beef and turkey are great candidates for a few sprigs, as are squashes, leeks and sweet potatoes.

mint Another easy grower, mint is best raised in a planter on your patio or in a submerged pot in the garden since it proliferates easily. Maintain your mint by thinning regularly and nipping buds. Lamb, chicken and salmon are all sensational with it, but pairing with watermelon, asparagus or snow peas will really blow you away. There’s also nothing like fresh mint in your mojito on a hot summer day.

thyme Another low-effort herb to plant, keeping in mind that thyme likes alkaline soil and full sun. Many people will use this plant as a fragrant ground cover. With a little pruning in the spring and summer, yours will turn out great and its nuanced flavour and aroma will pay dividends in the kitchen. Try it with pork tenderloin or get creative with honey lemon thyme cocktails.■ — News Canada
