The Effects of Untreated
ADHD
ATTENTION-DEFICIT/HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER, often referred to as “ADHD,” is more common than people may realize. According to the organization Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD), a 2015 meta-analysis of 175 studies worldwide estimated that roughly 129 million children had ADHD at the time of the study. That’s nearly twice the population of the entire United Kingdom and more than three times the population of Canada.
Children aren’t the only people with ADHD, which can continue into and throughout adulthood if left untreated. Untreated ADHD can have immediate consequences on children, as the American Psychiatric Association notes that the condition can make it difficult for students to focus on tasks in school and compromise their ability to listen to teachers in the classroom. Each of those side effects can adversely affect students’ academic performance, potentially affecting their long-term futures as a result.
Untreated ADHD can produce some unpleasant and surprising con-
sequences outside of the classroom as well.
Untreated ADHD and substance abuse
A 2003 study published in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry found that stimulant therapy for patients being treated for ADHD lowered their risk for substance use disorder. People with untreated ADHD were three to four times more likely to develop substance abuse disorders than individuals who were receiving treatment for the condition.
Untreated ADHD and driving
Driving is a skill that requires drivers to be attentive and aware of their surroundings at all times. A 2009 study published in the Journal of the Canadian Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry found that the stimulants used to treat ADHD can make people with the condition better drivers. Such medications were found to reduce inattention, distractibility and impul-
siveness, each of which is a known characteristic of ADHD. Without such treatment, individuals with ADHD could be putting themselves, their passengers, fellow drivers, and pedestrians at risk each time they get behind the wheel.
Untreated ADHD and education
It’s no secret that the earning potential of college graduates is significantly greater than that of individuals whose highest level of education is high school. A 2006 study published in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry found that adults who self-reported ADHD were far less likely to have graduated college than those who reported that they had been diagnosed with ADHD (19 percent compared to 26 percent).
ADHD is a common condition across the globe. Seeking treatment for ADHD could have a profound and positive effect on individuals throughout their lives.

Dyslexia Questions about
LEARNING DISABILITIES affect millions of people across the globe each year. Though learning disabilities are often discussed in ways that highlight how they affect students’ performance in the classroom, the International Dyslexia Association® notes that the effects of a learning disability like dyslexia can reach well beyond the classroom.
According to the non-profit organization LD Resources Foundation, Inc., which is dedicated to helping individuals affected by learning disabilities, dyslexia is the most common learning disability. Answering some common questions about dyslexia can help people affected by it, including adults, get the help they need to overcome it.
What is dyslexia?
The IDA defines dyslexia as a language-based learning disability that causes people to have difficulties with specific language skills, particularly reading. Students with dyslexia may experience difficulties with oral and written language skills, including the writing and pronunciation of words.
What causes dyslexia?
The IDA reports that studies of brain images as well as the anatomy of the brain have indicated that there is a difference in the way the brain of a person with dyslexia develops and functions.
What are some symptoms of dyslexia?
The LDRF indicates that individuals with dyslexia may find it difficult and overwhelming to read, write and speak. The Mayo Clinic notes that signs of
dyslexia may be difficult to recognize before a child enters school, and symptoms vary depending on the age of the individual affected.
Young children affected by dyslexia may learn new words slowly; experience difficulty forming words correctly; have problems remembering or naming letters, numbers and colors; or find it hard to learn nursery rhymes or play rhyming games.
Signs of dyslexia may become more apparent once children enter school. At this point, kids with dyslexia may read well below the expected level for their age; have problems processing or understanding what they hear; find it difficult to find the right word or form answers to questions; have trouble seeing similarities and differences in letters and words; and have difficulty spelling, among other symptoms.
Difficulty reading; problems spelling; avoiding activities that involve reading; requiring an unusually long time to complete tasks that involved reading or writing; and mispronouncing names or words are some of the symptoms of dyslexia in teens and adults.
Can dyslexia be cured?
The Mayo Clinic notes that there is no known way to correct the underlying brain abnormality that causes dyslexia. However, various techniques have made it easier for individuals with dyslexia to do well in school and in the professional arena.
Learning disabilities like dyslexia can affect individuals throughout their lives. But early detection and treatment can help students and adults overcome the challenges of dyslexia and other learning disabilities.

EDUCATION GUIDE 2023 16
How much should a
backpack weigh?
BACKPACKS are handy tools that carry an array of gear. Students rely on them to hold books, while hikers and campers utilize backpacks to carry items such as food and beverages that keep them safe on trails. Even offi ce workers may turn to backpacks to carry laptops or other tools of the trade.
Backpacks are handy resources, but overstuffed backpacks may cause injury. Backpacks should only carry weight that people can handle, and there are guidelines that can help people safely utilize backpacks.
The weight of a backpack depends on the age of the person using it. Generally speaking, adults should not exceed 20 percent of total body mass when loading backpacks. That means a healthy person weighing 200 pounds should not carry more than 40 pounds in his or her backpack.
In regard to children, researchers indicate that a child’s backpack should weigh no more than 10 percent of what the student weighs. Those findings are based on a Spanish study involving 49 primary school-aged children. Therefore, if a child weighs 70 pounds, he or she should only carry up to 7 pounds in the backpack.
Individuals also should follow a few other backpack recommendations to alleviate injuries. It’s not a good idea to wear a backpack hanging from only one shoulder. A backpack should be worn on both shoulders, and ideally with a lumbar strap. This will help to
prevent muscular pains by providing well-rounded support.
A backpack with wide, padded straps can minimize pressure on the shoulders, back and collarbone. Backpacks made of lightweight material will not add much additional weight to what’s being carried. Another tip is for children and adults to pack the heaviest item carried in the backpack closest to the centre of the back to minimize strain.
Failure to follow guidelines may result in pain and injuries and have negative effects on balance, which may increase the risk of falls or other injuries.
Whenever possible, individuals may want to use trolley backpacks, which are on wheels. They can be dragged, alleviating the need to carry heavy loads.

head lice How to prevent
AS THE SCHOOL YEAR begins, parents may grow nostalgic about their own school days. Though thoughts of recess and field days may be the first memories parents think of, they no doubt also recall the less enjoyable parts of school, including annual tests for head lice.
Head lice screenings are no longer required by many school systems. However, head lice can still affect kids, so it’s important that parents recognize what lice is and how to prevent it.
What is head lice?
Head lice are small insects that are around 1/16- to 1/8-inch long. Despite their size, head lice have claws that allow them to cling to hair shafts and suck blood from the heads of their hosts.
How is head lice spread?
Much of the reasoning behind testing for head lice at school had to do with how lice spread. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, head lice are spread most commonly by direct hair-to-hair contact, though in rare instances they can spread through shared clothing or belongings.
How can head lice be prevented?
The CDC recommends various strategies to prevent the spread of head lice. Parents can keep a watchful eye on kids during play dates and educators can do the same during recess to ensure children aren’t engaging in ways that can spread head lice.
· Avoid hair-to-hair contact during play and other activities at home, school, playgrounds, and other times when kids gather in close contact.
· Don’t let kids share clothing, especially hats, scarves, coats, ribbons, and barrettes.
· Do not share combs, brushes, or bath towels.
· Disinfect combs and brushes used by an infected person by soaking them for five to 10 minutes in water that is at least 130F.
· Discourage kids from lying on beds, couches, pillows, and carpets that have recently been in contact with an infected person. Kids also should avoid stuffed animals that have been in contact with an infected person.
· Lice can survive for one to two days after falling off an infected person. So, any clothing, bed linens or other items worn or used by an infected person over the previous two days should be machine washed in hot water (no less than 130 F) and dried on the high heat drying cycle. Dry clean items that cannot be placed in a washing machine and store other items in a sealable plastic bag for two weeks before reusing.
· Avoid fumigant sprays or fogs, as the CDC notes that such products can be toxic if inhaled or absorbed through the skin.
Schools may no longer test for head lice, but kids can still become infested. Parents can emphasize various strategies to prevent infestations.

eyes checked?
BY MARYLENE VESTERGOM
THE ONTARIO ASSOCIATION OF OPTOMETRISTS (OAO) recommends children start receiving comprehensive eye exams as early as six to nine months. And don’t worry, as Dr. Gillian Pengelly of Underhill Optometry in North York, Ontario, points out, your child doesn’t even have to be taken out of their car seat or carrier. “At that age, we’re checking into the health of their eyes, and if they’re seeing properly and developing on track. We also look for conditions that could impair eye health or vision such as congenital cataracts, strabismus (misalignment or crossing of the eyes), and retinal issues.”
The OAO also recommends children between the ages of two and five get at least one check-up, and then from 6 to 19 get annual check-ups.
What is important is ensuring a comprehensive eye exam is part of your child’s wellness and prevention plan. Just like annual check-ups with your doctor or dentist, seeing your optometrist is a physical for your eyes and an integral part of your child’s good eye health. Pengelly says an annual eye exam is about prevention as undetected or uncorrected vision problems can cause children and teens to suffer aca -

EDUCATION GUIDE 2023 28
Think your child is too young to have their
demically, socially, athletically, and personally.
So, why are comprehensive check-ups needed?
“Kids might not even know they’re having a problem with their eyes or vision,” says Pengelly. “If their vision has always been a certain way, they’re not going to know that maybe that’s not what it’s supposed to be like – it’s not ‘normal’.”
“Vision is one of the most important senses for child development,” says the City of Toronto Vision Health for School-Age Children. “Research shows that 80 per cent of children learn through their eyes. However, one in four school-age children may have a vision problem that, if left undetected, can affect their learning and development.”
In some schools, vision screening programs are available. However, these are not the same as a comprehensive eye exam given by an optometrist.
Vision Screening versus Comprehensive Eye Test?
“Vision screenings are limited to the extent of what they can test and
can miss kids who need intervention. Unfortunately, these tests can give parents a false sense of security and are not a substitute for a comprehensive exam,” points out Pengelly. “A comprehensive eye test includes a general health assessment of the front and back of the eye that can help detect childhood eye diseases like congenital cataracts, glaucoma and on the rarer side cancers. The exam also tests their vision, eye muscle and eye coordination. So, is the child nearsighted or farsighted? Do they have astigmatism, or is one eye seeing better than the other? There’s also binocular vision, which is how the eyes move and work together. Can they bring and keep things into focus? And can they track objects properly?”
In Ontario, parents should take advantage of their OHIP coverage, as OHIP covers the cost of an annual comprehensive eye check-up for children 19 years of age and under. As well, if your child is in junior or senior kindergarten, born in 2017 and 2018, and glasses are required, the Eye See…Eye
Learn program will provide a complimentary pair of glasses at no cost per child, with an estimated value of over $300. These are provided courtesy of participating optometrists and their exclusive corporate partners Essilor Vision Foundation Canada and Modern Optical Canada.
The offer ends June 30th, 2023, and the next round starts July 1st, 2023, for children born in 2018-2019. For details on this program and to find a participating optometrist, visit optom.on.ca/esel.
Last word – has the digital world impacted the eyesight of children?
“What we can definitely say is that there’s been an increase in digital eye strain, dry eyes, tired eyes, blurred vision, frontal headaches which we would normally see in adults, and now kids are experiencing these symptoms,” says Pengelly.
The verdict is still out regarding the direct link between digital screen time and myopia. However, Pengelley says, “Parents can delay the onset of myopia by encouraging outdoor activity over screen time, especially limiting nonacademic digital devices and get your kids to spend at least two hours a day outdoors.”
Your eyes are your windows to the world – take care of them. Healthy habits mean healthy eyes.
