EDITORS NOTE

up front

SUMMER SAFETY Hurray! In the last stretch of the school year, we see ourselves getting excited and preparing for the summer break and the hot weather. It is vitally important to teach our kids to stay safe while having fun. Pool openings, camps, sports, and other outdoor activities are all great things to look forward to, but can cause harm if not done safely. Hospitals see thousands of injuries each summer of children between the ages of 5 to 14. Start by preparing them to remember their sunscreen to protect their skin from sunburns which could ruin their plans for the following day. Always ensure they leave with water bottles to keep hydrated, especially on hot days and after strenuous activities, like riding their bikes or skateboarding. Speaking of bikes and skateboards, head injuries are the leading cause of an emergency trip to the hospital. It is imperative that they always wear their helmets and other safety gear. Take necessary precautions while riding bikes and sharing the road ĐÐûÏ ďÃÏлÜÃö Ɍ Ķ â¿ Üæ»¯Ü ºÐÛà ð¯ûÏö ¯â¿ ûó¯ÐÜö ĐÏÃóà available in your town or city. Buzz! Insect repellent is a must as well. Many illnesses are transmitted by ticks such as Lyme

disease and mosquitoes, including Zika virus and West Nile virus. Under no circumstances should you leave any child unattended in a pool. Children should always have an adult present, even if the child knows how to swim. The younger the child, the greater the risk, and it takes only a few seconds for an accident to happen – and in some instances, fatalities. May, July, and August have holidays we like to »ÃÜúó¯ûà ĐÐûÏ Ķ óÃĐæóÛöȨ #Ì Ēæý ºýĒ Ēæýó æĐâȣ make sure children are seated at a fair distance away from the actual lighting of the explosive. Always have an adult – not a teenager – practice this part of the event. To be extra safe, it’s best to go to a local park where the city or town has enforced safety precautions to assure everyone’s safety. Let’s not forget sparklers, one of the most entertaining things kids love to have fun with. Before lighting them, please remind your children to stay far away from any other child due to the harm it can cause. Keep safe this summer with these tips! Try to enjoy yourself in high stress moments, remember Que Será, Será, whatever will be, will be!

X8E H Z MARYLENE VESTERGOM There is no question coming home with a newborn is an exciting and busy time. But it also means a whole new set of responsibilities, including º¯ºĒðóææĶ âÍ Ēæýó Ïæáà Ìæó ûÏà baby and you. While newborns spend most of their time in their crib rather than crawling around the house – you and baby may still be exposed to hazards. So, start by making sure your home is safe for you. After all, you will have a special bundle of joy in your arms and ûϯû öÜÐððÃóĒ ķ ææóȣ ¯â¿ ûϯû Üææöà carpet that you used to trip over is the last thing you want to worry about or fall over with the baby in your arms. Instead, consider using nonslip pads under those area rugs or even removing them altogether. Toronto’s David Drutz of Kiddie Proofers has become an authority within the realm of »ÏÐÜ¿ ö¯ÌÃûĒ ¯â¿ º¯ºĒ ðóææĶ âÍȨ “You don’t want to go overboard, but parents have to understand ûϯû º¯ºĒ ðóææĶ âÍ Ðö ¯ºæýû ÍÐďÐâÍ parents peace of mind and, most importantly, making their home indoors and out safer.” And safer is the key. SafeHome.org, is an American organization that researches, reviews and compares the best in home safety product solutions. »ÏÐÜ¿ðóææĶ âÍ ðóû¯ýûÐæâö Ð⠯⿠around the home. Drutz says we still hear about those tragic accidents of untethered furniture or televisions, etc., falling on a child even today. Although there are many tools for today’s parents, from safety gates, cabinet and door locks, and more, getting a home consultation from a safety provider might ðóæďпà ûÏà öæÜýûÐæâö ûæ Ķ û Ēæýó needs as your toddler becomes increasingly curious and mobile. SafeHome.org shares the following tips on how to keep your newborn’s environment comfortable and safe from hazards:

Have a safe crib area – clear heavy objects, artwork, or mobile objects that could potentially fall on your child and cause an injury. Keep diapers out of reach – if you use disposable diapers, cover them with your baby’s clothing. If your child is able to reach and pick at the diaper, they could suffocate if they tear off pieces of the plastic liner and swallow them. Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors – in or near your baby’s room so you can be aware of any hazards in the nursery.

Beware of unintentional suffocation – while every parent wants their baby to feel warm and cosy when sleeping, use smaller blankets, or add one layer of clothing to your baby for bedtime. ÏÐÜ¿ðóææĶ âÍ Ēæýó Ïæáà doesn’t have to be a daunting task. According to SafeHome.org they suggest starting with one area of the house and gradually working your way to the others as you make progress.” For a room-by-room guide, see safehome.org/resources/ »ÏÐÜ¿ðóææĶ âÍɍÍýпÃȮ æó kiddieproofers.com cityparent.com

changing the narrative

THE STEM GAP IN CANADA IS REAL. HERE’S HOW GM AND GIRL GUIDES OF CANADA ARE TRYING TO CLOSE IT According to data from Statistics Canada, women make up only 34 per cent of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and computer science) bachelor’s degree holders and only 23 per cent of Canadian science and technology workers between the ages of 25 and 64. This creates further challenges for women because science and technology occupations, particularly in engineering and computer science, are among the highest-paying and fastestgrowing occupations in the country. It’s also a problem for these industries because Statistics Canada said numerous analyses have found that greater diversity strengthens innovation ¯â¿ ðÃóÌæóá¯â»Ã Ðâ ûÏÃöà Ķ ÃÜ¿öȨ So, why aren’t women pursuing education and careers in STEM? The research found there were “leaks” in the STEM pipeline, ĐÐûÏ ĐæáÃâ ÜïďÐâÍ ûÏà Ķ ÃÜ¿ö at various points between high school and entering the workforce. The data pointed to a loss of interest in the STEM curriculum, which was related to women not self-identifying as scientists, feeling isolated or out of place in STEM classes (due to being greatly outnumbered by male peers, or to unequal treatment by professors and/or peers), and having lower ¯»¯¿ÃáлɍöÃÜÌɍ»æâĶ ¿Ãâ»Ã ûϯâ men of equal academic ability. As a result, many women in STEM report feeling isolated and out of place by the time they do reach the workforce. 14

The Daniels Faculty at the University of Toronto is offering three programs this summer both in-person and online. Daniels Minecraft Program (Online – 8-14) uses your participant’s love of Minecraft to explore the fundamentals of design and architecture while building teamwork and communication skills. Daniels Design Discovery (Online – 15-18+) provides a comprehensive introduction to the discipline of architecture, giving you the opportunity to experience different ways of seeing, thinking, and making through the lens of design. Daniels Design Discovery (InPerson – 15-18+) is for anyone interested in a future career in design and is a great opportunity to experience the intensive studio culture that characterizes most architecture programs. nene.brode@daniels.utoronto.ca | daniels.utoronto.ca/outreach 28
