EDITORS NOTE
up front MOTHER’S DAY
As children, we’re given dolls to play with, make believing we are moms, leading us to dream that one day this will come true – this is where our story begins. Who is with me and thinks that being a mom is the most challenging job in the world? From the beginning and every period of their lives, we always wish for the next stage. We believe each step will be easier than the last, and yet we never learn. It never gets more manageable, but like the true warriors we are – we keep going. As we know, every phase has its pros and cons. A parental position is taken without any training, yet we naturally figure it out. Without realizing it, we are challenged and tested daily and experience every emotion we can. Does anybody notice that Mom’s need mom’s too! I look at it this way: if I can teach my kids anything about parenting, it would be that. (I think.) And then there’s the stress! How do we manage it, how do we keep sane? One out of five mothers are ready for a meltdown. It’s no walk in the park; however, we wouldn’t change it for the world at the end of day, and we couldn’t imagine life without them. Mother’s Day is a day where Moms can put up their feet, be catered to by the kids and treated like a queen by their spouses. I think it ended with my generation and the simplicity of raising a family that this one day a year just will not cut it. You want more
‘me time’ or what I would call ‘stress-free time’ at least once a week. How are you going to do this? Well, start with minimalizing your life, your home. You may be asking yourself, how are you going to do this, there’s so much stuff? It’s overwhelming, I know. I just downsized and I don’t know how I managed to get rid of a lot – and I mean a lot of stuff I didn’t need, like stuff I put aside and labeled “just in case”. Or there’s always sending your kids back to the days that playing outside till the streetlights came on, that when you came in for your bath and bed, you actually went to bed with exhaustion as a kid. Or you can read Diane Boden’s “Minimalist Moms: Living and Parenting with Simplicity” Published by Mango, Diane will humourlessly help you on how she did it by first telling you why you should. She will turn you into a decluttering warrior with helpful tools, advice, encouragements, and thoughts. The first place to start she writes, is in the bathroom. Really? I know, I thought the same thing. There’s no perfect time to start. minimalistmomspodcast.com Happy Mother’s Day, and remember, Que Sera, Sera, whatever will be will be! TWEEN | AGES 8-12
spending time
4 ACTIVITIES THAT YOUR TWEEN DAUGHTER WILL ENJOY DOING WITH YOU WORDS BY ORION LI FROM APRICOTTON If your typical day is consumed by school, extracurricular activities, and work, why not spend a quiet evening at home together? You will find activities that appeal to everyone on this list so that you can plan an enjoyable weekend with your daughter. The key to keeping your tween engaged is to try something that breaks up your everyday routine. Hiking In the spirit of responsible social distancing this winter, going on a snowy hike with your daughter is a perfect way to spend some quality time together. Not only is it an excellent excuse to escape the house and enjoy the fresh air, but winter hiking can be a great bonding opportunity for parents and daughters –whether that’s a snowball fight in the woods or just listening to the falling snow together. Baking Any parent and daughter with a sweet tooth, this one’s for you! Tackling a tricky recipe is a great way to take on a fun challenge with your daughter. If it’s a success, then it can be something
you take pride in adding to a family recipe box together… if it doesn’t come out of the oven quite the way you were imagining, then it’ll be a great memory to laugh about together. The fact that the whole family can enjoy the results is an added perk! Try an at-home workout. Being cooped up at home can make anyone start to feel
restless. Why not try a workout video with your daughter? Chances are, she might have a few recommendations for you to get started with together. With the wide variety of home workout videos, from yoga to HIIT, you’ll be sure to find something that helps you get rid of that extra energy as well as spend some quality time with your daughter. To get her excited about your workouts, you could buy her a sports bra like Apricotton’s Perfect Sports Bra.
Who knows, you both may find your new favourite pastime! Home project Is there an IKEA dresser that needs to be built? Does the garage need to be deep cleaned? Has your daughter’s bedroom seen better days? Working on any home improvement project can be a fun bonding activity for you and your daughter. Not only can you take pride in finishing a major project together, but you can share some essential life skills with her while checking an item off the to-do list. It’s a win for everyone!
This blog was co-written by Apricotton, an online tween and teen bra brand that designs bras with features specifically for growing girls. They’ve started a movement to guide girls and improve their confidence during puberty by offering older sister advice that empowers girls to achieve and feel their best during this sensitive life stage. HOMEWORK HELP FOR CHARITY With the prevalence of online school during the COVID-19 pandemic, a group of McMaster University students have sought to leverage their academic skills in the fight against COVID-19. The resulting initiative, Homework Help for Charity (HHC), aims to match volunteer tutors with K-12 students for accessible online tutoring sessions. Instead of having a fixed fee, students are asked to make a donation of any amount to a charity of their choice. HHC’s goals are to: 1. Help K-12 students by giving one-on-one help, something that online schooling has difficulty providing. 2. Empower K-12 students to be socially engaged with causes they care about. “As young adults, it can be easy to defer taking action to address social inequalities to ‘adults’ or ‘professionals’, but we realized this was a fl awed way of thinking,” says co-founder and co-president Dani Lee. “After recognizing the immense privilege we held as university students, we wanted to harness this power and contribute to bettering our society,” says co-founder and copresident Vivian Zhang. HHC began in Summer 2020 as just a small group of students talking about how they can best support their community in times of need. Now, almost a year later, they are comprised of a large team of volunteer tutors and executive members. Currently, they are partnered with Neighbour 6

to Neighbour, a charity that works to improve the quality of life of Hamiltonian families for mutual promotion. So far, HHC tutees have donated to charities such as the BC Cancer Agency, saying “My awesome dad died of cancer and my good friend’s mom, who was doing a fundraiser [for BC Cancer Agency] to raise over $1000, also died of cancer. I will donate more this month because I think both causes, Cancer Research and Homework Help for Charity, are incredible. Thank you for all that you and your student colleagues are doing! I am impressed by
your organization, generosity and tutoring talents”. Other charities that HHC tutees have supported include Kidsport Canada. One student says, “Kidsport is an organization that helps a lot of children and families, including my sister, get the chance to play their favorite sports and improve their skills.” The entire HHC team has learned a lot about community leadership through their work on this initiative. “There’s a lot that’s out of our control as university students, but what is in our control is what we do with the skills we have during this time
to empower people to advocate for themselves and others,” says Cynthia Gu, the head of HHC Marketing and Promotions. HHC’s trained tutors can provide feedback on essays, read with your little ones, assist with understanding math and physics, and much more! All you have to do is show us proof of your donation and we’ll pair you up with a tutor within 48 hours. You can sign up for a tutoring session on HHC’s website homeworkhelpforcharity.square. site/ HHC wants your child to soar academically while supporting causes you believe in! cityparent.com

road trip MUSKOKA
WORDS BY ANDREW HIND There’s a lot of uncertainty about the coming summer. What will be open, what events will go forward, how can we remain safe while still enjoying the season. One thing we can be sure of: as did last year, so too will people flock to Muskoka this summer. Here are four COVIDsafe, child-friendly locations excerpted and abbreviated from my new book Exploring Hidden Muskoka (Folklore Press). Hatchery Park and Falls Location: Hatchery Road, Utterson (the park is on the left, about one kilometre/.6 miles down the road) A century ago, dozens of sawmills operating across the region fouled lakes and streams with sawdust, destroying fish spawning grounds. In response to the crisis, the Ontario Department of Game and Fisheries developed cityparent.com
the Skeleton Lake Fish Culture Station, which operated from 1937 until 1992. The real highlight is found at the end of a short (though uneven) trail: an attractive 8-metre (26-foot) waterfall. Lookout Mountain Location: Lookout Road, Huntsville Huntsville’s Lookout Mountain offers panoramic vistas looking out onto Fairy Lake. It’s a great place to stop for pictures and a lunch. Now cast your mind back to the mid-19th century, when Muskoka was still wilderness not yet touched by settlers. At the base of this hill stood a trading post operated by Alexander Bailey, a Metis descended from fur traders who enjoyed excellent relations with Indigenous people of the region. Bailey once had these views all to himself.
Port Carling Locks Location: Highway 118 as it crosses the Indian River in the heart of Port Carling The village of Port Carling is known as The Hub of the Lakes. On any given day, dozens of watercrafts of every size, from jet skis to steamships, pass through the lock linking Lake Rosseau and Lake Muskoka. The process is exciting, so little wonder there are always eager onlookers. The lock dates to 1871 and is considered something of an engineering marvel. Many people don’t realize that there is a second lock. Built in 1921, the ‘Small Lock” is on the other side of the island. Take the brief walk around the island – there are pleasant views and informative signs – and, if its open, pop into Muskoka Lakes Museum.
Rosseau General Store Location: Rice Street (corner of Rice Street and Highway 141, Rosseau You’re going to need snacks and drinks at some point in your journey. Maybe some magazines to keep the kids entertained. Make sure you stop at the Rosseau General Store, a Muskoka landmark that has stood at the heart of its community for 140 years and is among the oldest continuously operating general store anywhere in Ontario. The store exudes nostalgic charm. The architecture speaks of another era, a time when horse and wagons rumbled along muddy roads and, if you listen carefully, the aged floorboards groaning underneath whisper tales of ages long past. Like the true general stores if yesteryear, it carries everything you might reasonably want to buy – browse for a bit. May/June 2021 | CITY PARENT

WALKING THROUGH COVID-19 WORDS BY MARYLENE VESTERGOM
“The toe bone’s connected to the foot bone, the foot bone’s connected to the ankle bone, the ankle bone’s connected to the leg bone.” Sound familiar? Well, considering each foot is made up of 26 bones, 33 joints, 107 ligaments, and 19 muscles and tendons, truer words were never spoken. And let’s face it, since COVID, we’ve been asking a lot of our feet.
UNFORTUNATELY, KIDS ARE NOT GETTING ENOUGH EXERCISE, SO THEIR FEET ARE WEAKER AND HAVE LIMITED PEDAL POWER AND/OR JOINT RANGE OF MOTION. Our favourite walking trails have now become mini highways of people seeking fresh air, exercise and mental wellbeing. This is all good, but that excessive and repetitive motion have many making a beeline to their foot doctor complaining of foot aches and pains. Peter Charbonneau, pedorthist at Cleveland Clinic in Toronto, has noticed an increase in appointments from kids and 10
CITY PARENT | May/June 2021
adults. “The most common affliction these days is metatarsalgia,” says Charbonneau. “It’s a painful foot condition in the metatarsal region, often referred to as the ball-of-the-foot. Over time, due to excessive pressure, the metatarsal heads become painful and inflamed.” There are also many other issues at play, says Jim Marando, chiropodist at the Niagara Foot Care Clinic in Grimsby, Ontario. “Unfortunately, kids are not getting enough exercise, so their feet are weaker and have limited
pedal power and/or joint range of motion. So not only is their foot impacted, but so are their lower leg muscles; they have weaker hip abductors/glutes and a weak core.” Getting the correct diagnosis and seeing your foot care specialist is key in determining the cause of the pain and accessing remedies. If the problem does not resolve with modified activity, you may have a “mechanical” foot issue. Conservative treatment involves unloading pressure to the ball-of-the-foot. This can be
accomplished with either off-theshelf footbeds or prescription orthotics that usually feature a metatarsal pad. Icing the painful area and strengthening the intrinsic muscles of the foot can also be beneficial. A few strengthening tips: • Scrunch a towel by using your toes and curl it towards you. • Roll your foot back and forth over a tennis ball. • With both feet or one on the ground, try to elevate your arch by forcing your large toe into the ground. • Heel or calf raises – going up on your toes to strengthen your arch and calf muscles. And like the tires on your car, the treads of your shoes are a tell-tale sign of wear-and-tear. Sean McGrath of New Balance Toronto suggests you check for overuse, thin or worn-out soles, and instead of opting to buy shoes online, try to visit a specialized shoe store to get the right fit. “We work with many foot care specialists, which allows us to ensure we can fit accordingly with prescribed orthotics. Running shoes are great for walking, but you want to make sure it has the right support.” And with summer in the air, if there’s one piece of advice foot specialists recommend, keep those flip flops for short distances – with little support, they’re not meant for long treks. Keep those for walks on the beach. cityparent.com
