summer glamping tips and tricks

Camping is a rite of passage for many Canadians. For some of us it’s more of a nightmare. If you’re not too keen on the discomforts of camping, you can add a little bit of luxury and go glamping with minimal effort. Here are some tips to make your excursion more enjoyable:

glimmering light

More than looking pretty, some twinkling lights can also help you prevent mosquito bites and find your way around the site. Try placing citronella candles in glass jars at convenient intervals. Or poke holes in a pattern into clean tin cans and add tealights or short pillar

candles. It’s a fun craft that sparkles with beautiful patterns in the night sky. You can keep Bic’s newest EZ Reach Lighter on hand to help set the mood. The extended 1.45-inch wand helps keep your fingers away from the flame, even when lighting tough-to-reach places like tea lights and kindling.

sweet dreams

Camping isn’t known for providing a great night’s rest, but a few simple upgrades can help you sleep like a log. Bring a foldable cot or air mattress to lift your body above the hard bumpy ground without taking up too much space in your vehicle. Add a cushy mattress topper, soft and cozy bedding from home, and a

couple of comfy pillows and you’ll be all set for a restful slumber.

fine food

There’s no doubt camping has some classic meals and snacks, from trail mix to hot dogs, freshcaught fish and s’mores. But with a Dutch oven or sturdy frying pan there’s plenty more easy and creative food to be had. Why not step it up with fresh pancakes, peach cobbler or an aromatic stew? A little bit of prep at home can go a long way on the fire. You can also treat yourself with gourmet goodies like fancy chocolate for your s’mores, or unexpected additions to your trail mix, such as dried mango or candied nuts. ■

simple steps to refresh your kitchen

Acomplete kitchen renovation can be hugely expensive when you factor in the cost of replacing the appliances, flooring and countertops. But there are some DIY options to spruce up the busiest room in your home that won’t break your back or your budget. Try wallet- and work-friendly updates to these areas:

cabinet colour

Replacing your cabinets is pricey and messy. But you’ll amaze yourself with how much personality a fresh coat of paint can add to your kitchen. Brighten up dark doors to create a bright, clean and airy feel. Take plain white cabinets and drawers, and paint on a layer of mahogany sophistication. Feeling bold? Paint with a bright accent colour like red or blue to really let that part of your kitchen pop. Switch out the hardware to a new metal and you’ll end up with completely new cabinetry.

the lighting

The great thing about swapping your lighting setup is that it will enhance all your other DIY choices. Go with a central hanging light for a classic feel, or a set of track lights to put the spotlight exactly where you want it. Many kitchens have an unused light fixture in the ceiling, so you can even add a second set of lights without having to worry about rewiring or tearing into the ceiling.

your faucet

DIY that makes an impact doesn’t have to mean everything but the

kitchen sink. A new faucet is easy to install, and it can make a surprising difference to the feel of your kitchen. Look for one that matches form with function: a pull-down faucet will let you more easily keep the sink pristine, and if it uses Del-

ta’s Touch2O technology, you can turn it on with a tap anywhere on the faucet and avoid messy handles during meal prep. A timeless design with a modern feel can fit into just about any kitchen. Find more information at deltafaucet.ca. ■

5 fun summer ideas for kids and parents

The warmer weather means it’s time for exploring and adventures, especially after spending so much time cooped up indoors. Here are a few creative ways to do family favourites this summer:

take a neighbourhood tour

Try rediscovering an area in your city or town and experiencing it with new eyes. Look for self-guided walking tours online where you can learn about its history and neat facts. Or make a scavenger hunt game out of it, getting everyone to try to be the first to spot some graffiti art, a purple car or a special landmark. Whoever wins can get an extra scoop of ice cream when you visit the local parlour at the end of the day.

check out a drive-in attraction

Who says drive-ins are old school? They’re making a comeback as a safer way to enjoy activities that typically involve crowds in closed spaces. Look for a theatre near you screening the latest Hollywood release or an old classic. Other drive-in options now available include comedy shows and concerts. Pack some cozy blankets and your favourite snacks for a budget-friendly family evening.

camp under the stars near or far

Camping is super popular this summer, but there should still be a few openings left at a national or provincial park that’s a bit further afield or less in demand. Or save

yourself the trip and camp out in your own backyard — the kids will have just as much fun and it’ll be less work for parents. Plan fun activities, like camping charades, crafts with nature and glow-in-thedark bowling.

enjoy the journey on a road trip

See new places in a safer way with an in-province day trip that’s all about the journey. Schedule stops at outdoor landmarks or attractions and plan to stop at fun lo-

cal takeout spots that you pick together as a family. Save money by getting more out of your gas with a high-efficiency fuel like Synergy Supreme. Available at Esso stations, the premium fuel helps keep your engine three times cleaner for more kilometres per tank compared to gasoline meeting minimum Canadian government standards in portfuel injected engines. Actual benefits are based on continuous use and may vary depending on vehicle type, driving style and gasoline previously used.

visit a new community park

Spend an afternoon at a park you don’t normally go to, pointing out any new trees, plants and birds to your kids. You’ll be surprised how exciting a different playground or sport facility can feel. You can even bring activities for the kids and your laptop to get some work done on a weekday afternoon for a break in your usual routine. ■

what to do with your kitchen scraps

Many of us are trying to live a more sustainable life. Reducing waste and reusing what we have are cornerstones of helping to create a healthier planet. At the same time, it’s important to evaluate how we follow these principles to make sure they are not doing more harm than good.

Kitchen scraps are an important example of this. For many farmers, the best thing to do with food waste or leftovers is to feed it to their pigs. These animals eat outrageous amounts of just about anything, so it’s an economical and seemingly environmentally friendly solution to prevent waste in your kitchen.

But overall, feeding any animal kitchen scraps is not the safest

choice for their health. Not only can it lead to overfeeding and weight issues, but it could also potentially expose your animal to harmful diseases. For pigs, the risk of contracting African swine fever (ASF) is especially great.

ASF has not been found in Canada yet, but it’s been present in countries across Africa, Asia and Europe. A virus that cannot be contracted by humans, it’s highly contagious and deadly for pigs. It can survive for months in fresh, frozen, cooked or processed pork products. If contaminated food is fed to a pig it could start an outbreak, even from trace amounts of the virus.

Safer uses for food scraps include:

• Composting (as long as it’s stored far from your pigs) – there’s

always a need for nutrient dense soil

• Making broth by simmering leftover bones and veggie scraps on the stove

• Freezing them, if your garbage collection is rare or inconvenient or until you have enough to cook with

• Getting creative – extra meat scraps from butchering can make sausages, chili or meatloaf to use up less desirable bits of meat

To avoid harm to your pets or livestock, always practice good biosecurity and follow regulations in your area.

Find more information about measures to prevent African swine fever at inspection.gc.ca/asfbiosecurity. ■ — News Canada

The best way to ensure that situation is for all parties to communicate effectively.

From the mover’s point-of-view, having a contract that is clear and agreed upon is the number-one way to achieve success.

In Ontario, service agreements with moving companies come under the umbrella of Consumer and Corporate Affairs. When we provide you with a written quote in person, by law, we cannot charge you greater than 10 per cent over the amount stipulated in the contract – unless you change the conditions of the move.

At Two Men and A Truck® – Canada, we price by the hour, whatever it takes. If you call and ask to have 100 boxes moved, and we show up to find 200, of course we have to charge more than what we agreed upon. That is considered a change to the conditions of the move.

Moving takes time, and there are many unexpected situations that

might cause a delay and make your price go up. For example, the person who moves out of your apartment building before you may be running late, and the elevator is tied up longer than you planned. For the mover, the meter is running the entire time.

Sometimes customers neglect to tell us that they are giving a large furniture item to a friend or relative and want us to drop it off on the way. This is a change to the conditions of the move and will cost more. The most common glitch is that the key to the new home isn’t available when it should be, and someone has to drive somewhere to get it. We bill from dock to dock, so anything that increases the time also ups the price. When one of these unexpected happenings occurs, the mover will pull out a form called “Revision to Estimate” to explain the change, and everyone signs it.

Occasionally, we get college or university students asking to quote on moving them from or to separate addresses. This is do-able, as long

as they understand they pay for our crews’ time. It may well be more cost effective than hiring movers separately to have a number of students belongings all on the same truck.

We hire our own staff rather than casual or day labour. Our employees are trained professionals who are bonded and insured.

Make sure you hire a reputable mover whose crew members are covered by Workers’ Compensation and who has a bona fide phone number linked to their office to call if and when you need to especially on moving day. When all is said and done, customers should check with reliable sources to ensure they are hiring a bona fide professional firm.

At Two Men and A Truck® – Canada, we use the latest in technology when it comes to hardware and software to help us with estimating. A contract lets you and your mover know where you stand. Read it carefully and ask any questions you have. An informed consumer is always a happier one. Visit www. twomen.ca. ■

4 ways to use local strawberries

Warmer weather is almost here and so is the best of our growing season. Local produce not only tastes better, it also supports Canadian growers, as well as reduces our carbon footprint. While there are many stars of our local growing season, strawberries are the favourite of many.

The small, unique and deliciously red berries from fields across the country are available for a short window, but pack a punch that keeps us coming back for more each year.

If you find yourself purchasing more strawberries than you know

what to do with this summer, here are a few ways to enjoy them:

take it outdoors

Strawberry skewers on the barbecue will be your new party trick. Lightly oil and grill strawberries to top a salad. Or soak them in rum or bourbon or a touch of vanilla extract or balsamic for a non-alcoholic option before skewering and barbecuing for a few minutes, flipping once for a deliciously warm topping for your favourite ice cream or cheesecake.

s’mores the way

For a sweet and tart twist on the summer classic simply add sliced strawberries to your usual s’mores

combo or take it to the next level with chocolate hazelnut spread and a few slices of banana, instead of the traditional chocolate combo. Marshmallow-dipped strawberries also make a great fireside companion. Melt marshmallows on the stovetop or use marshmallow fluff and dip a skewered strawberry in the melted marshmallow, roasting to perfection over the fire.

jazz up your jam

Making jam with local berries is a tradition, and while your stan-

dard strawberry jam is delicious on its own, why not make a few new variations? Try adding a cup of prosecco to your standard jam recipe for a sparkling surprise or some fresh-chopped basil for a savoury spin on the classic favourite. Spread on a scone or add to a charcuterie board for an extra taste of summer.

savoury is the new sweet

A summer salad with strawberries – like a spinach salad with pe-

cans and a poppy seed or balsamic vinaigrette – may already be in your repertoire, but there are many more ways to use strawberries in a salad. Mix strawberries and fresh basil, drizzle with a mixture of olive oil, honey and lime juice and serve with grilled President’s Choice Halloumi. Strawberries, feta and mint is also a delicious combination and can be used like a salsa with fresh naan.

Local strawberries are now available at Loblaws stores across Canada. ■
