what’s the truth about best before dates?
We’ve all had that moment when you reach into the fridge for the container of yogurt, jar of pizza sauce or bottle of mustard and notice that the “best before” date on the package has passed. Does that mean you need to toss it in the garbage? No, not necessarily.
Best before dates appear on most food products that have a durable life of 90 days or less. There are some exceptions, including fruit and vegetables.
You should be aware that there is a key difference between a “best before” date and an “expiration date.”
Simply put, a best before date indicates the timeframe when a product will be at its tastiest and freshest. After that date, the product may still be edible, but might not look or taste quite as good.
By contrast, an expiration date is the last day that something can safely be consumed. Expiration dates only appear on a small number of products, including infant formula and meal replacements.
It’s important to note that best before dates only apply to products that have been stored properly, such as refrigerating dairy products and avoiding extreme temperatures for pantry items.
Other products, such as canned goods or dried pasta, may also have best before dates, but those are not actually required, and they’re usually a year or more out from the packaging date.
An unopened container of yogurt might be safe to eat days or even weeks after the best before date if it has been properly refrigerated. But a month or more after that date, maybe not.
When you do open the package, look for signs such as a funky smell or the presence of mould. By doing this instead of immediately tossing the product out, you can help reduce food waste.

simple ways to beat thesummer heat
Whether you bask in tropical days of a heat wave or dread hot temperatures each summer, you should know how to stay safe during extreme heat. Hot days are expected to become more frequent and intense
across Canada in the future. Here’s what you can do.
get informed
Tune in to local forecasts or sign up to receive heat alerts on your phone so you know when to expect the heat. If it’s available, check the
Air Quality Health Index in your area since air pollution is often worse on very hot days.
don’t wait for thirst
Feeling thirsty is not a good sign of how hydrated you are, especially in hot weather, so be sure to drink water before you feel thirsty. Try leaving a glass by the sink as a reminder, and up your fluid intake by eating fruits and vegetables with high water content like watermelon or grapes.
keep your home cool
If you find yourself in an overheated home, activate the air conditioning if it’s available.
If you don’t have air conditioning, close your curtains or blinds during the day to block out heat from the sun, and avoid using your oven to cook. If it’s safe, open your windows at night to let in cooler air.
14 INFO YOU CAN USE 4Rent.ca June 17–July 1, 2023
If it gets too hot in your home, relocate to a cooler area of the home like your basement or visit an airconditioned space like a library or cooling centre.
be friendly
Try to plan regular check-ins with family, friends and neighbours on hot days to help each other find relief. Head to an air-conditioned space such as a home, the local library or the movies.
Extreme heat poses health risks for everyone, especially for young children, older adults and those of us with breathing difficulties or other health conditions. It’s smart to stay connected to give and receive support.

hacks
Camping is the unofficial Canadian summer pastime. Pitching tents, cooking meals and spending time with family and friends under the stars brings us closer to nature. But how do camping habits impact Earth? Here are some eco-conscious hacks that will preserve the fun – and the planet – during your next trip
rent, repair or borrow
Preparing camping gear is an important step in the planning process. This year, instead of spending money on new equipment, consider buying used or renting, borrowing or repairing what you already have. If you have friends who camp, there’s a high chance they have gear you can borrow – sharing is caring and eco-friendly.
The longer you keep a product, the less impact it will have on the environment. A little TLC spent on bringing new life to existing camping tools will help protect the planet for future generations.
shop local and sizzle sustainably
Don’t grocery shop ahead of time; instead, consider buying fresh food at your destination. Purchasing fresh, locally grown produce from farmers and distributors near your destination supports the community, is better for the environment and is more likely to reduce food waste.
And don’t stop at produce - the best camping mornings start with bacon. To sizzle sustainably, look out for the Carbon Zero logo on
foods like Maple Leaf Original Natural Bacon packs.
say no to plastic to preserve nature’s beauty
Instead of buying plastic water bottles, bring reusable ones and fill them up at your campsite. Some sites have water refill stations, or you can filter and boil your own from nearby natural resources.
Limit single-use containers and bring reusable cloth trash bags with you to collect your waste. Recycling and composting where you can goes a long way towards preserving nature’s beauty.
Eco-conscious camping is all about reducing our environmental footprint. Have fun, take care of each other and respect Mother Nature. ■

BY CHUCK RESNICK
move containers of fuel or hazardous materials
Gas-powered items such as lawn mowers that are not emptied of fuel cannot be moved by your moving company. This is in accordance with Ontario’s Health and Safety Act and Hazard Materials Act. The law prohibits us from transporting these types of goods.

Moving animals takes special care, and movers are not willing to take responsibility for pets during a move. You are best to arrange for them to be somewhere else on moving day, and then ease them into their new surroundings yourself.
provide insurance coverage for all items
Many movers, including our company, have their own guidelines about this. Securing plants takes a level of special treatment that we are not prepared to offer. If customers need advice on how to move plants, we can help them find companies that are equipped to do so. In our experi-
When we see items that are too big and bulky for us to handle, we will let you know. Upright pianos, for example, are incredibly heavy and usually require heavy-duty dollies and a truck with a lift gate. We can definitely help you with any size of piano. Massive wall units can also present challenges. We can help you find the right firm to move those specialty items, if required.
When you hire a moving company, it is important to understand what services the firm can and cannot provide. At Two Men and a Truck – Canada, we pride ourselves on accommodating our clients in every possible way. But there are some requests that pose problems. There are 10 common issues that most movers won’t do, or are forbidden to do by law. 4
move personal valuables
It makes sense that small valuables like jewelry, stocks, bonds and cash are items you should transport yourself.
Ontario’s Conditions of Carriage requires movers to insure items at least 60 cents per pound. If our coverage does not include antiques or works of art, we can arrange it through our Insurer as long as these items are itemized upfront. Your homeowner insurance policy may also have a rider for goods in transit. 4Rent.ca June 17–July 1, 2023

rearrange your furniture
Sometimes people ask us to rearrange their furniture at their destination, which adds to the time estimated for your move. We are happy to provide you with this service.
to cause a delay, the move continues on as planned but will likely extend longer than your estimate.
load pre-packed boxes, items into a storage pod
install major appliances
We are neither plumbers nor electricians. If you require installation of your major appliances, arrange to have those professionals help you during your moving week.
stop the clock because of a change on your end
We get paid from the time we leave our facility until the time we return. If you change the parameters of your contract or something unexpected happens on your end
We do not do “load only moves.” If someone else is driving the vehicle and the goods are not under our control, we can’t take responsibility for the condition of the goods at their final destination.
All of the above help ensure that your possessions arrive at the other end in one piece, with the safety of you, your family and the movers in mind. And, that’s our job!

quick tips to cut back on kitchen waste
With prices going up, it’s extra important that we don’t waste food. Here are four ways you can cut back on waste in the kitchen.
schedule a regular pantry purge
No matter how big or small your kitchen is, you likely have a few dark corners of your pantry where items get pushed to the back and forgotten about. It’s a good idea to regularly sort through your cupboards to see what you have on hand.
When you do stock up on pantry staples, make sure you move anything you already have on the shelves to the front, so you use up those items first.
whip up a pot pourri meal
Not sure what to make for lunch or dinner? Before you head out to the store, take a look in the fridge to see what you already have. Maybe you can make a veggie stir fry with those loose carrots,
celery stems and lonely zucchini. Or chop up that leftover chicken breast into a chicken salad sandwich or use it as a topping for a pita pizza.
Looking for more ideas? There are websites and apps where you can enter the names of ingredients you already have and get recommendations for recipes to make.
pack or freeze leftovers
Making big batches of food is a great way to save money, particularly if you buy large-sized packages of food for bulk-rate savings. Eat up what you can over the next day or two for lunches or an easy, heatand-eat dinner. Whatever’s left after that, freeze in individual containers for a quick homemade meal instead of making something new.
understand food labels
Many people mistakenly believe that a best before date on a food package means that they should throw it out after that date has passed. Unlike an expiry date, which does mean you shouldn’t consume food after that day, best before dates refer to a product’s ideal freshness period. But, if stored properly, most food is perfectly edible beyond the best before date on the label.
In fact, you might be able get some deals at the store by buying products that are approaching their best before dates. There are also apps where retailers and restaurants sell off products that are about to hit their best before date for a steep discount.
