3 tips for a sustainable summer staycation
Thinking about a summer vacation but unsure where to start? This year, why not explore close to home and connect with nature. Here’s how to make the most of everything Canada has to offer with a more sustainable summer vacation.
go offline and get outside
For a truly refreshing and restorative staycation, disconnect for a few days without reaching for phones or laptops. Electronics can disrupt our circadian rhythm and natural sleep cycle. Consider morning salutations or meditation to connect with nature and set your intentions for the day.
There are 37 national parks and 10 national park reserves in Canada,
plus numerous provincial parks and local nature reserves to explore, meaning nature isn’t far from your doorstep.
“camp” from the comfort of home
Roughing it in the outdoors may not be ideal for everyone, but it’s easy to create a quality camping experience from home. Set up a tent in the backyard or a local campground, light some candles or a bonfire, and roast marshmallows and hot dogs using sticks fallen from nearby trees.
Try bringing food and snacks you already have in the fridge or pantry. If grocery shopping’s a must, consider carbon-neutral food options like Maple Leaf Natural Top Dogs. The Carbon Zero logo indicates a carbon neutral company to help
you identify planet-friendly options for your cookout.
support sustainable experiences
Looking for a new experience? Try visiting food festivals or fundraisers in your area. These provide the opportunity for you and your family to support the community while also cutting down on your carbon emissions since you won’t have to travel far.
If booking a hotel or rental property, ask your accommodation provider about their sustainability commitments to choose an option that aligns with sustainable tourism.
Make staycations the new vacations. The more we explore our neighbourhoods on foot, the smaller our carbon footprint. ■

4 ways to use local strawberries
Warmer weather is almost here and so is the best of our growing season. Local produce not only tastes better, it also supports Canadian growers, as well as reduces our carbon footprint. While there are many stars of our local growing season, strawberries are the favourite of many.
The small, unique and deliciously red berries from fields across the country are available for a short window, but pack a punch that keeps us coming back for more each year.
If you find yourself purchasing more strawberries than you know
what to do with this summer, here are a few ways to enjoy them:
take it outdoors
Strawberry skewers on the barbecue will be your new party trick. Lightly oil and grill strawberries to top a salad. Or soak them in rum or bourbon or a touch of vanilla extract or balsamic for a non-alcoholic option before skewering and barbecuing for a few minutes, flipping once for a deliciously warm topping for your favourite ice cream or cheesecake.
s’mores the way
For a sweet and tart twist on the summer classic simply add sliced strawberries to your usual s’mores
combo or take it to the next level with chocolate hazelnut spread and a few slices of banana, instead of the traditional chocolate combo. Marshmallow-dipped strawberries also make a great fireside companion. Melt marshmallows on the stovetop or use marshmallow fluff and dip a skewered strawberry in the melted marshmallow, roasting to perfection over the fire.
jazz up your jam
Making jam with local berries is a tradition, and while your stan-
14 LOCAL 4Rent.ca July 1–15, 2023
dard strawberry jam is delicious on its own, why not make a few new variations? Try adding a cup of prosecco to your standard jam recipe for a sparkling surprise or some fresh-chopped basil for a savoury spin on the classic favourite. Spread on a scone or add to a charcuterie board for an extra taste of summer.
savoury is the new sweet
A summer salad with strawberries – like a spinach salad with pe-
cans and a poppy seed or balsamic vinaigrette – may already be in your repertoire, but there are many more ways to use strawberries in a salad. Mix strawberries and fresh basil, drizzle with a mixture of olive oil, honey and lime juice and serve with grilled President’s Choice Halloumi. Strawberries, feta and mint is also a delicious combination and can be used like a salsa with fresh naan.
Local strawberries are now available at Loblaws stores across Canada. ■

what to do when there’s an extreme weather alert
4Rent.ca July 1–15, 2023 20 INFO YOU CAN USE
Canadians are used to extreme weather, from fog to blizzards to heat waves. Various levels of government keep track of these weather events and issue alerts so you know when to take extra care.
Though we all know the dangers of freezing temperatures, you might not realize that extreme heat comes with dangerous health risks as well. Here’s what you need to know:
what are the risks?
Heat illnesses include heat stroke, heat exhaustion, fainting, heat rash or cramps, and swelling of the hands, feet and ankles. These conditions tend to be caused by overexposure to heat or overexertion in the heat. If not prevented, heat illness can lead to long-term health problems and even death.
Older adults, young children, people living with chronic illness, social isolation or poverty, and people who work outdoors often have a higher risk for heat illness. If you take medication, consult with your family doctor or pharmacist about your level of risk.
Fortunately, most negative outcomes of heat illness can be avoided if you take appropriate action.
what to do?
• Stay hydrated.
• Check in with family and friends to make sure they’re okay.
• Reschedule or plan outdoor activities for cooler parts of the day.
• Dress in loose-fitting, light weight, breathable clothing
• Cool off in the shower or in an air-conditioned space.
what to watch for?
• Symptoms of heat illness include:
• dizziness or fainting,
• nausea or vomiting,
• headache,
• rapid breathing and heartbeat.
If you have any of these symptoms during extreme heat, move to a cool place and drink water right away.
Immediately call 911 or your local emergency number if someone you’re caring for has a high body temperature and is either unconscious, confused, or has stopped sweating.
While waiting for help, move them to a cool place, apply cold water to their skin and clothing, and fan them as much as possible. Find more information at Canada.ca/ health. ■

26 MOVERS 4Rent.ca July 1–15, 2023
move
Moving an elderly loved one can be tough. No one wants to upset that person and everyone wants the move to go as smoothly as possible. This can seem like mission impossible.
The children and families of the Baby Boomer generation – people born between 1946 and 1960 – are already helping their loved ones move into downsized or elderly assistance accommodations and often are not emotionally prepared for the task at hand.
Senior loved ones can be very set in their ways and often are not well equipped to express their emotional frustrations in a constructive way as moving day draws closer.
It all can seem like a daunting task.
Over the years, we have packed and moved many seniors and the important thing is to stay organized, be patient, calm and respectful throughout the entire moving process.
If you are moving a senior loved one into a retirement facility or a condo, you should first contact the management to find out what they are allowed to bring in, appropriate moving hours and if they have any tips specific to their facility to help smooth the moving process.
Remember the following:
organize, begin packing weeks in advance
If your loved one is moving from a large home to a one-bedroom condo, there will be more furniture than needed. Get a floor plan of the new space and help your senior plan the space with their favourite furnishings, then help them decide what to do with the left overs. If the item is a family heirloom and cannot be accommodated in the new space, suggest giving it to a close family member like a favourite grandchild.
sort before you pack
Seniors tend to collect things they don’t need or use. Be sensitive when suggesting to get rid of possessions. Ask if they use the item and if they would mind if you donated it to raise money for the Salvation Army, for example. Start packing early to avoid feeling overwhelmed as moving day draws closer.
pack, clean as you go
When helping sort and pack your senior’s belongings keep in mind that their eyesight and reduced mobility prevents them from doing regular chores and can result in poor housekeeping habits. Instead of commenting, offer to clean as you pack and try not to be judgmental.
you will need more time than you think
Allow enough time so your loved one doesn’t feel rushed. Sorting through years of stuff is difficult and sometimes emotionally painful. Allow your loved one time to say goodbye. If they take longer to clean out the desk drawer because they found a stack of pictures, let them take the time to walk down memory lane. This is a very important part of the process. Be patient and listen to their life stories, there will come a time you will be glad you did.
wrap small items in coloured paper
This prevents items like knickknacks from becoming lost or mistakenly thrown out.
label boxes on top and sides
Make sure to mark the top and sides of boxes as they’re packed and write in large letters to make it easier for your loved one to read.
Make sure to label boxes containing breakable or sentimental items as ‘fragile’.
pack all electronics in the original boxes
Otherwise, use low-static bubble wrap when packing these items.
use packing paper
When wrapping fine china and precious items, do not use newsprint because the ink can bleed.
seal with packing tape
This makes it easier to stack and protect your senior’s belongings.
use boxes designed for items you are packing
Invest in dish packs for dishes and wardrobe boxes for clothing. Wardrobe boxes make it easy for seniors to access their clothing on hangers.
check unwanted clothing before donating
It’s a good idea to sort unwanted clothing for donation prior to moving. Before donating any gently worn unwanted clothing, check pockets for valuables. Seniors often hide small valuable items like jewelry or cash in the pockets of suit jackets or shoes and forget where they hid it.
make your loved one’s new space feel familiar
Take pictures and colour samples of the inside of their current home. Try to decorate the new space and place objects in a similar way, so that their new space will feel like the old one. Be as detailed as you can, from arranging the bedroom furniture to placing family pictures on the bureau. This will help make the new surroundings feel like home. n

plant-based recipes
Many of us are now looking to incorporate plant-based eating into our meals. But this can be a daunting task, especially for meat-lovers looking to reduce their meat intake or for vegetarians living in a world of meat-eaters.
To help spruce things up in the kitchen when it comes to going plant-based, try some new recipes that everyone will love, like this delicious fusion of two of the best types of food – pizza and pasta. ■
Pizza Penne Skillet
Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 25 min Serves: 4
Ingredients:
• 2 cans crushed tomatoes
• 12 oz (375 g) penne
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• ¼ lb mushrooms, sliced
• 1 onion, sliced
• 1 red pepper, sliced
Directions:
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 1/2 tsp dried oregano
• 1/4 tsp each salt and pepper
• 1 pkg Gardein Meatless Meatballs
• 1 cup shredded vegan mozzarella
• 2 tbsp torn basil leaves
1.Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain, reserving ¼ cup cooking liquid.
2. While pasta cooks, preheat broiler. Heat oil in large ovenproof skillet set over medium-high heat; cook mushrooms for 5 to 8 minutes or until they start to brown.
3. Stir in onion, red pepper, garlic, oregano, salt and pepper; cook for 2 to 3 minutes or until starting to soften. Stir in tomatoes and Meatless Meatballs; bring to boil. Reduce heat to medium low; cook for 5 to 8 minutes or until sauce is thickened.
4. Add pasta and reserved cooking liquid to skillet; cook, tossing well, until pasta is well coated. Sprinkle with cheese.
5. Broil for 2 to 3 minutes or until cheese melts. Sprinkle with basil. Find more plant-based recipes and inspiration at readyseteat.ca.
