how to pack safely

Considering the importance our “stuff” has in making us feel comfortable in our surroundings, these items deserve special thought and care. Thinking ahead is the best thing you can do when it comes to making arrangements, packing, etc. Organization should be your mantra, efficiency your goal.

If you are doing the packing, look ahead to lifting, stacking and unpacking the boxes during your move. People often run to the grocery or liquor store to pick up cartons, and then use newspaper as cushioning. Although this approach can save you a few dollars, in the long run, you may pay for it in stress, time and broken items.

During the packing itself, be generous with whatever you are using to cushion your things, especially fragile items. People often cram too much in each box in an attempt to keep the number of cartons down. As good as that sounds, it can backfire, as too many items with not enough cushioning may shift during transportation and damage each other. In addition, someone will have to lift each box and place it into the moving vehicle.

Unlike newspaper, packing paper does not leave behind ink that then has to be cleaned during an already hectic time in your life.

Packing too many heavy items into one container can result in no one being able to pick it up, or worse yet, the box breaking from the weight. Common sense dictates that heavier items be packed in smaller boxes, and vice versa. And did I mention labeling?

Again, a little common sense goes a long way to success at the other end. When you pack the moving vehicle, remember to place the boxes you’ll need first, last – and label accordingly with the contents and which room it goes into. Even better, if you are driving to your next resi-

My apartment is a nonstop question zone. I have very limited space, yet still enough space to constantly be asking myself “Why did I buy this? And

this? And that!” I’ll admit, when I moved into my first apartment I got a little excited and, despite budget restraintes (zero budget), I went a little crazy with what I considered investments.

It’s not that all the items in my apartment are totally useless. It just took me some time to figure out they don’t all fit with my kind of lifestyle. Still, I like to think I’m not the only one to blame. Seriously,

Besides the fact I would actually like to be on good terms with my neighbours, a sound system is just not at all necessary for my tiny apartment. Let’s face it, the sound from my iPhone speakers reach from the kitchen to my bathroom just fine.

Everyone who owns a piece of exercise equipment knows they don’t use it half as much as they should. Then there’s the fact I’m constantly bumping into it when I get out of bed in the morning.

About 2/3 of the furniture I assembled from IKEA seemed a lot smaller online then in my actual rental. Now my bedroom looks like it could belong to Shrek.

luxury kitchen appliances

Kitchen appliances like a blender, Vitamix, and KitchenAid, I consider a luxury because you have to have the luxury of having a decent amount of counter and cupboard space to be able to use and store any of these items. Do you know how many different produces go into a Martha Stewart smoothie?

How many pillows can you fit onto one sofa? The answer is a lot! The pillows look great. The only thing is I’m

constantly looking for space to place all these pillows when it comes the time to sit on the only couch in my apartment. If you haven’t guessed yet – it happens a lot.

lounge chair

Summertime is so short. You better believe I invested in a state-of-the-art lounge chair to make the most of my balcony. The only thing is, the lounge chair is now the only thing that fits on my balcony. Any suggestions on where to store a lounge chair now that it’s winter?

vaccum cleaner

I really had the best intentions to keep my rental as clean as possible when I moved in. Of course, that meant I had to invest in the right cleaning appliances. The thing is when you have a small space, ends up your cutting edge vaccum cleaner doesn’t fit under any of the funiture and appliances which take up like 90 percent of your space. Just one more 12 pound item for me to store.

Now, I wonder how much I can sell these items on Kijiji for... ■

Closet space is at a premium in many homes and apartments. Many older homes were not built to accommodate large wardrobes, while rental properties are often designed to maximize living space at the expense of storage.

Closets vary depending on the size of the home, but many tend to be a minimum of 24 inches deep so they can store garments without the clothes brushing against the walls. Bedroom and hallway closets can be four feet in length or more. Walk-in closets are the largest options, but such spaces tend to only be available in modern homes or custom-built properties.

It is not always practical or possible to undergo renovations to create more closet space. Apart from moving to a new residence, homeowners or renters must evaluate the space they have and make some more efficient choices in how they utilize available areas.

The first step to more closet space is to eliminate unused items. Clothing that no longer fits or items that can be stored elsewhere should be removed from the closet. Donate as much as possible. Some organizations will even pick up donations at your convenience.

Replace existing hangers with slimmer, more uniform alternatives that more easily fit into your closet. In addition, remove empty hangers, which are likely just taking up space.

Bookends, bins, boxes and drawers can be used to contain items that don’t easily conform to closets. These may be purses, scarves, ties, and more. Don’t overlook the possibilities of hanging items on the wall inside the closet or on the back of closet doors.

Canada’s Food Guide wants us to eat together

Our food preferences and eating habits have evolved and so has Canada’s Food Guide. While still focusing on establishing healthy nutritional habits, the revamped version also puts an emphasis on how we eat.

Eating together is not only a great way to instill new habits and achieve our nutrition goals, it also allows us to find our passion for cooking, nutrition, and sustainability as a family. To help make the most of mealtime, it is also recommended that we put away our devices and enjoy quality time with our loved ones.

This is also a great opportunity to cook together. Getting the kids involved is a great way to teach good nutritional habits that can last them a lifetime. When working to establish new habits, try to set goals to help your family remain accountable and have fun tracking your progress along the way.

Setting goals to incorporate the new recommendations from the guide can be as easy as setting aside one day a week to meal-prep for the week ahead, planning a weekly dinner with friends or extended family, making the commitment to go meatless on Mondays or introducing new recipes to your repertoire.

The new food guide stresses the importance of the healthy plate, which is a very simple way to think about balance and portion size. The model is half vegetables while the rest of the plate is balanced out with whole grains and protein-rich foods. When it comes to serving healthy proteins, try new, sustainable alternatives. Why not try swapping out ground meats in recipes for black beans and crumbled tofu on taco night or chickpeas and lentils in chili or shepherd’s pie.

Try incorporating the new guidelines into your routine with this simple and quick one-pan puttanesca. We’ve swapped out the pasta for zucchini noodles, to squeeze some extra veggies onto your plate.

One-Pan Zucchini Noodle and White Bean Puttanesca

Ready in: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

Serves: 4

• 2 tbsp (25 mL) olive oil, divided

• 1 cup (250 mL) cherry tomatoes

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

• ½ tsp (2 mL) salt

• ¼ tsp (1 mL) freshly ground black pepper

• Pinch (0.5 mL) hot pepper flakes

Directions:

• 1 can (540 mL) no-salt added white kidney beans, drained and rinsed

• ¼ cup (50 mL) whole Kalamata olives, drained, pitted and sliced

• 1 tbsp (15 mL) capers, drained and rinsed

• 1 pkg (340 g) spiralized zucchini

veggie noodles

• 1/4 cup (50 mL) torn fresh basil

1. Heat 1 tbsp oil in large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add tomatoes; cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and golden; 2 to 3 minutes.

Set aside.

3. Heat remaining 1 tbsp oil in same skillet over medium-high heat. Add veggie noodles; cook, tossing and stirring often until tender-crisp; 1 to 2 minutes. Add tomato mixture; cook, stirring to coat, until heated through; about 1 minute. Sprinkle with basil.

2. Add garlic, salt, black pepper and hot pepper flakes. Cook, stirring often until fragrant; about 1 minute. Add beans; cook, stirring often until heated through; 1 to 2 minutes. Stir in olives and capers. Transfer to large bowl.
