4 steps to save on back-to-school
If your child is gearing up for post-secondary, you know that this school year is looking a bit different. Whether your teen is moving onto campus or staying home for online classes, managing their finances is always a top concern. As a parent, you can help by sharing these important tips:
create a plan for the year
Having a financial plan in place before classes begin can help keep track of spending habits while staying within a budget. A plan can reduce any unnecessary spending, keep savings in good shape and help prepare for any unexpected costs.
save on furnishings
Setting up a home workstation in your house or furnishing a first offcampus home can be a major drain on the pocketbook. Whether your child chooses to buy new or used, research is the best way to save. It’s faster than ever to compare prices online, and they won’t regret the legwork when they’ve got more fun money for the year.
save on groceries
Food is one of the biggest costs students incur throughout the year, but your child can hit the ground running with a shopping strategy. A few go-to meals will help them build grocery lists faster and hav-
ing a list can help them save a ton of money at the store. Loyalty programs are a smart addition to any strategy, and you’ll be surprised how fast the points rack up.
get a first credit card
While it may seem intimidating, now is likely a good time for your child to apply for their first credit card. Credit cards can help establish a credit rating, which could come in handy later in life. Thanks to online statements that detail spending categories, a card can also be a useful budgeting tool. Cards like the PC Financial Mastercard award points on purchases that can go towards essentials like groceries or household items. ■

investments, giving your home a fresh new look and feel is easy and affordable.
for the bedroom
When it comes to the space where you spend at least a third of your
life sleeping, creating a sense of calm and security is key. Crisp new linens or throw pillows in bold or cheerful colours can revitalize the whole room. Adding candles and new artwork or photographs on the walls are simple ways to freshen

up the aesthetic while showcasing your personality.
for the dining room
Remember how much you loved setting a festive table during the holidays? Keep this indulgence alive to give your dining room an extra oomph, and encourage your family to use this space throughout the year. Splurge on some really nice table linens in colours you love and make a fun DIY centrepiece
with elements from nature – check online for tutorials and ideas.
for the home office
After a couple of years working remotely, most of our office spaces could use an upgrade. Get a new calendar that you’ll love looking at, whether it’s photos of dogs or inspirational quotes, and change up your picture frames to reflect more recent memories.
Since the key to any office is great electronics, consider your
current needs. With the right device, you can easily take your workstation to another room or even outside. Try the LG gram 17” ultra-lightweight laptop designed to meet the heaviest demands of our data-rich world. An immersive 16:10 display and long-lasting battery life will take you through the day.
Wherever you choose to work, take some time to make sure your space is set up ergonomically and that your chair and monitor are positioned to eliminate strain on your eyes, wrists and back. ■

how to cut down your commuting costs
Whether we’re headed to work, school or other commitments, sky-high gas prices and inflation mean many of us are facing regular trips that are more expensive than ever.
While there’s not much you can do about prices these days, there are a few steps you can take to save on your commute. Here are some ideas:
plan your trips
If you know you’re heading into the office, you can plan errands around your in-office day(s) and stop at destinations like the grocery
store, bank or pet store, on your way home. Running your errands on days when you’ll already be out driving can save you time in your schedule and may even save you money at the gas pump.
try out alternative transit or carpooling
In good weather, you may try riding a bike to work to avoid filling up at the pump and enjoy the health benefits at the same time. But in the later fall and winter months when that may not be an option, try carpooling with colleagues – this can help you save on gas, and give you
some great company to enjoy the ride with.
take advantage of apps
As long as you use them hands free, mapping or GPS apps can help you find the most efficient – and therefore cheapest – route. You can also try telematics – a usage-based program that follows your driving habits over time and tailors your insurance premiums accordingly. Apps like these, such as Aviva Journey, are a simple way to reward yourself with cash saved for staying safe on the road.

5 budget-friendly tips to upgrade your home
Upgrading your home to be energy-efficient and eco-friendly doesn’t mean you have to compromise your budget. With a little creativity and a green mindset, you can upgrade your space in ways that are good for both the environment and your wallet.
optimize your lighting
Ditch the old incandescent bulbs and try some energy-efficient LED lights. LED lights are not only brighter, but they also last longer, making them a cost-effective lighting solution. Embrace natural light by opening up your curtains or blinds during the day to give your space a sunny and inviting ambiance.
upcycle and recycle
Instead of buying new furniture or décor, explore the world of upcycling and repurposing. Embrace DIY projects by giving life to old furniture. You can transform outdated and worn-out furniture with a refinish or repaint. Get creative and repurpose everyday objects into unique and functional pieces. Look for inspiration online and in
second-hand stores for affordable and sustainable ways to refresh your home’s style.
DIY composting
You can start your own composting system to reduce food waste, and create nutrient-rich soil for your garden. Try setting up a compost bin in your backyard, or use indoor composting methods. By composting, you can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and produce valuable compost that enriches soil, which is great for your plants or your garden.
Use eco-friendly cleaning products
Make the switch to eco-friendly cleaning products to reduce the use of harmful chemicals in your home, and minimize their impact on the environment. You can look for non-toxic cleaning supplies or biodegradable solutions that don’t contain harsh chemicals like chlorine and phosphates. Did you know you can also make your own cleaning solutions? Use ingredients like vinegar and baking soda, or even lemon juice. These options are not only safer for you, but they are safer for the environment.
make use of benefits and credits
Take advantage of government programs like the Climate Action Incentive payment (CAIP).
This program provides families and individuals with quarterly payments to offset the cost of the federal government’s pollution pricing. With the extra little cash in your wallet, you can use this to reduce your car -
4Rent.ca August 12–26, 2023 24 TIPS
bon footprint and implement more eco-friendly upgrades. You can make progress in upgrading your home on a budget using these government payments, and contribute to a greener future.
You may be eligible for the CAIP if you live in a province with federal pollution pricing: Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Is-
land. Those last three provinces are new to the program this summer, so residents there will be getting three payments this year. Residents of New Brunswick will follow suit and receive their first payment in October 2023. The exact amount of the quarterly payments varies by region – you’ll get more if you live outside a major urban centre. You don’t need to apply; you just need to file your taxes every year.

moving to university/college residence or new home requires smart
organization & planning
BY CHUCK RESNICK
For many university or community college students, a new school means a new place to live.
Moving away from home for the first time can be a stressful change. However, taking a few painless steps can make the transition to the new “home away from home” go more smoothly.
Moving children to their university or college of choice for the first time can leave parents and their student children physically and emotionally drained, if unprepared. It’s easy to get frustrated when faced with packing and condensing belongings which will ultimately have to fit in a small room shared by one to three other people.
Here are seven tips for parents and students to make the process easier:
don’t over-pack boxes
Remember, the heavier the item, the smaller the box.
Use original packaging for large electronics when possible – the safest way to transport electronics like a computer, TV, mini-fridge or a microwave is to use the original packaging. If it’s not available, wrap the electronics in anti-static bubble wrap.
try to condense
Go through the new student’s belongings before packing. Reduce the amount of items to move to start the school year clutter-free.
use the right supplies
Shop around for competitive prices on supplies. Avoid using old shopping bags, laundry baskets or topless boxes to transport belongings. Items can get tossed around during the move and if loose items fall out, people can get hurt. Also, beware of using grocery store boxes – they stored food and may carry bugs.
pack similar items together
Label the boxes so they are easily identified. This will help the student prioritize unpacking without making a huge mess.
start early
Don’t wait until the last minute to collect boxes and moving supplies. Start packing non-essential items immediately, such as seasonal clothing. Clearly label all boxes so unpacking is easy.
recycle
Buying reusable supplies like high-quality containers is good for parents’ wallets and for the environment. Most corrugated cardboard boxes can be easily folded and stored during the school year. Plastic storage bins with lids are also a good option. The containers parents buy this year can be reused and recycled throughout their student’s university career. ■

managing back-to-school jitters
After a summer off, going back to school, homework, exams, and the unknowns of teachers and classmates can all be sources of anxiety. Add to that the uncertainty of hybrid learning models, pandemic protocols and the fact that many kids have been learning remotely for so long, the thought of going back to school can quickly become overwhelming.
Help your kids manage backto-school jitters and set them up for success with these three simple tips:
rest their minds and bodies
Sleep is restorative, and it can be one of the most powerful ways to improve mental and
physical well-being. When kids are well rested, they can think more clearly, make better decisions and reduce anxiety.
Long summer days can mean later bedtimes, so start to ease them back into an earlier schedule and make sure they’re getting a good night’s sleep. That way they’ll be in a good routine and ready for early-morning start times once the school year begins.
focus on the positives
If your child is feeling a bit anxious, try to shift their focus from the things they’re worrying about to the things they’re looking forward to. Maybe they’re excited to see old friends again, buy new school supplies or get involved in an after-school activity.
Being prepared can also help ease anxiety, so find things you can do together like setting up a workspace, organizing supplies or planning lunches and snacks. Not only can these activities be fun, but they can also help kids feel more proactive and less overwhelmed.
teach them stress management
Learning how to cope with stress in times of adversity is a valuable life skill for kids. Here are some simple techniques you can teach

your child: breathing techniques –get them to focus on their breathing and take deep breaths as they count to 10; visualization – have them close their eyes and picture something that makes them feel happy and calm, like a place or person they love; journaling – encouraging them to write their thoughts down on paper can help them sort through their feelings when they’re overwhelmed.
