Moving can be a consider able undertaking. While working professionals who are single or mar ried with no children may find it easier to move than those with families, it’s fair to say that anyone who is moving in the near future has some significant work ahead of them. In its Job Relocation Survey, the moving company Allied Van Lines found that people move for a variety of reasons. Fifty percent of the 3,500 respondents indicated they relocated for career advancement or money, and many more indicated they relocated because of a job transfer (12 percent), their companies moved (9 percent) and to be closer to family/relation ships (8 Regardlesspercent).of what’s motivating a person to relocate, and whether or not they’re relocating on their own or up rooting their families, various strate gies can make a forthcoming move go more smoothly.

• Ask what relocation packages cover. Relocation packages vary from com pany to company. The Allied Survey found that 54 percent of companies that offered such packages covered moving expenses, while 21 per cent gave new hires a lump sum of money to use as they deemed nec essary. • Inquire about relocation assistance. The Allied survey found that 63 per cent of companies offered reloca tion packages. That’s a considerable perk, as moving can be expensive, especially for those moving to dif ferent parts of the country. Asking about relocation expenses before be ing offered a job can be tricky, but some companies may mention such packages in their job ads or in their initial meetings with out-of-town candidates.

How to manage relocating

• Emphasize organization. Much of the stress associated with relocat ing can be traced to the logistics of uprooting oneself and one’s family. People who are unaccustomed to making lists may want to start, as doing so can help keep track of all the tasks that need to be completed before hitting the road. Various unique tasks, from cancelling utili ties to changing insurance policies, must be completed before moving, and it’s easy to lose track of what’s been done and what hasn’t. Main taining a to-do list and checking off tasks as they’re completed can sim plify the relocation process.

— Metro Creative for a new job sponsored trips to search for homes.

• Rent your first home. The Allied sur vey found that 31 percent of respon dents indicated the most challeng ing part of relocating for a job was finding a home, while 29 percent felt acclimating to their new community was the most challenging aspect of their relocation. Individuals who rent their first homes upon relocat ing can remove some of the pressure to find the perfect home, knowing full well their first home in their new community will be temporary. If possible, rent in a location that makes it easy to immerse yourself in your new community, which should make the adjustment easier. In ad dition, place items that are unneces sary for day-to-day life in storage. Having some of your possessions already packed should make your next move less stressful. Relocating for a job can be exciting and stressful. But there are ways to make moving go smoothly.

For many university or com munity college students, a new school means a new place to live. Moving away from home for the first time can be a stressful change. However, taking a few painless steps can make the transition to the new “home away from home” go more smoothly.Moving children to their university or college of choice for the first time can leave parents and their student children physically and emotion ally drained, if unprepared. It’s easy to get frustrated when faced with packing and condensing belongings which will ultimately have to fit in a small room shared by one to three other people. Here are seven tips for parents and students to make the process easier: don’t over-pack boxes

4Rent.ca August 19–September 2, 2022 14

Chuck Resnick organization & planning moving to university/college residence or new home requires smart

Remember, the heavier the item, the smaller the box. Use original packaging for large electronics when possible – the saf est way to transport electronics like a computer, TV, mini-fridge or a micro wave is to use the original packaging. If it’s not available, wrap the electron ics in anti-static bubble wrap. try to condense Go through the new student’s be longings before packing. Reduce the amount of items to move to start the school year clutter-free. use the right supplies Shop around for competitive prices on supplies. Avoid using old shop ping bags, laundry baskets or topless boxes to transport belongings. Items can get tossed around during the move and if loose items fall out, peo ple can get hurt. Also, beware of us ing grocery store boxes – they stored food and may carry bugs. pack similar items together Label the boxes so they are easily identified. This will help the student prioritize unpacking without making a huge mess. start early Don’t wait until the last minute to collect boxes and moving supplies. Start packing non-essential items im mediately, such as seasonal clothing. Clearly label all boxes so unpacking is easy. recycle Buying reusable supplies like high-quality containers is good for parents’ wallets and for the environ ment. Most corrugated cardboard boxes can be easily folded and stored during the school year. Plastic stor age bins with lids are also a good option. The containers parents buy this year can be reused and recycled throughout their student’s university career.

While it may seem complex, insurance is really quite simple: The payments (or premiums) of the many, pay for the losses of a few. Your premiums go into a large pool, if you will, at your insurance company. The claims of the few are paid from that pool. Because there are more people contributing to the pool than there are making claims, there is always enough to pay the claims – even large single claims like when someone is permanently disabled as a result of a car collision, or many smaller claims like those re sulting from a natural disaster. (The 1998 ice storm that hit parts of On tario, Quebec and New Brunswick re sulted in an estimated 700,000 claims for damage totalling $1.4 billion.) However, large disasters (such as the ice storm) do come close to emptying the pool. insurance for insurance companies Even when the pool comes close to emptying, there is another pool from which insurance companies can draw to pay claims. Some of your premi ums are used by your insurance com pany to buy reinsurance – insurance for insurance companies. Sometimes losses are so big – like those resulting from an earthquake – that there is no way an insurance company can cover the costs. Reinsurance is an extra layer of protection against large losses. annual replenishing Your insurance is an annual con tract, so the pool operates for only one year at a time. Your premiums and the premiums of others are based insurance works

on how much money the insurance companies think they will need to pay the coming year’s claims. Your premiums do not build up over the years – unlike the premiums for some types of life insurance. how premiums are calculated Within reasonable limits, some of which are prescribed by law, your premium is calculated to reflect the probability that you will make a claim – that is, that you will draw funds from the insurance pool. Those who are unlikely to draw from the pool pay less than those who are more likely to draw from it. Insurers take many factors into consideration to determine the like lihood that you will make a claim.

A common misconception is that a policy holder who has never made a claim should pay less, little or noth ing for insurance. While it is true that past claims history is important, a more reliable indicator of how like ly a person or business is to make a claim is the statistical group to which he/she/it belongs. industry earnings Insurance companies generally do not make money on the premi ums gathered from policyholders. In 2005, insurance companies paid more than $21 billion in claims while tak ing in $35 billion in premiums. The difference between the premiums and claims, in this case $14 billion, is used by the companies to pay sala ries and taxes ($6.2 billion in 2005), and to cover the overhead costs (such as electricity bills) of running a busi ness. It is also used to pay the admin istrative costs of settling a claim. insurance pays for… Insurance pays for only those types of losses described in your contract. It is very important that you read your policy and/or talk to your in surance representative about what you are covered for and what you’re not. Insurance will not pay for every problem that you may encounter, nor is it a maintenance contract. In surance is generally intended – and priced accordingly – to help policy holders cope with the financial con sequences of unpredictable events that are “sudden and accidental.” If, for example, you live on a floodplain by a river, flooding of your property in the spring is not sudden or acci dental; it is inevitable and, therefore, uninsurable.TheInsurance Bureau of Canada offers information for consumers to help make them aware of their insur ance needs and assist them in under standing the types of insurance avail able. They are the national industry association representing Canada’s private home, car and business insur ers. Its member companies represent 90 per cent of the property and casu alty insurance market in Canada. For more information visit ibc.ca. of the Insurance Bureau of Canada
