Grants, bursaries, and financial aid
Are you really ready for post-secondary school?
ongratulations! You worked hard throughout your high school years to earn the grades you needed to get into the college, university or trade school of your dreams. But are you financially ready for life after high school? According to Statistics Canada, 2023/2024 tuition fees for an undergraduate degree averaged $7,076, and the fees only go up every year.
And that’s just for tuition. You’ll also have to factor in the cost of textbooks and other course materials, student fees, school supplies and essential tools like a laptop and a cellphone.
If your parents (or grandparents) opened a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for you, chances are you’ve heard about the Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG). Offered by the government of Canada, the basic CESG is available to any Canadian resident who opens an RESP. The grant matches 20 per cent of the first $2,500 contributed to a child’s RESP each year, up to a lifetime maximum of $7,200 per child. That works out to an extra $500 paid directly into your RESP every year, invested alongside your own savings.
There are other ways to help offset the costs of attending post-secondary school.
Many schools offer admission scholarships based on academic, artistic or athletic achievements. You may also qualify for bursaries or other financial aid directly from the school, or from charities and foundations. One example is the CST Foundation which offers awards of up to $7,000 annually to students entering post-secondary education for the first time.

BUDGET BEAT Get saving
3 budgeting tips for post-secondary students
Back to school is an exciting time for post-secondary students, but it can also be a source of financial stress.
Here are three tips to help you make a financial plan for campus life and beyond.
MAKE A BUDGET
It may not sound riveting, but budgeting is the best way to manage your finances.
First, you need to determine your short- and long-term goals. These could include things like reducing your weekly expenses or paying off your student loan.
Then, you need to evaluate your “needs” and “wants.” You need a place to stay, food and clothes. But you may also want to take a road trip with your friends for March break. A budget will help you determine what you can and can’t afford or help you save for a specific objective.
Finally, list your income, savings and expenses. Consider all costs, from big ones like tuition to small ones like your daily coffee. Enter this information in a tool such as the Budget Planner developed by the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada. Adjust amounts in each category to balance your budget.
KEEP TRACK OF YOUR SPENDING
Sticking to your budget is not always easy. Keep your receipts and bills, and compare your budget to what you spend at the end of each month.
If there are important differences, figure out why. Were there big-ticket items, like new furniture, that won’t be repeated each month? Consider setting spending limits to help you reduce costs if you tend to overspend in certain categories regularly.
GET READY FOR THE UNEXPECTED
Keep in mind that unexpected expenses will occur, from additional books to travelling home for holidays. That’s why it’s important to build an emergency fund.
It may sound out of reach, but you can start by putting aside even a small amount on a regular basis to deal with unexpected circumstances. Knowing that you have this buffer will help relieve financial stress and set you up for success.

SPACE SAVERS Dorm design
5 ways to maximize your
rganizing a messy or cluttered closet makes it easier to find your clothes, creates space and makes the whole room look neat and tidy. Here are some closet storage ideas, tips and tricks to help maximize space in your closet.
USE SHELVES TO OPTIMIZE SPACE AND ADD DECOR
“Adding wooden or wire shelving to your closet is a great way to increase storage for items like shoes and other non-hangable items,” says Katie Linnen, storage and organization merchant for The Home Depot Canada. “Wire shelves are perfect for letting things like linens breathe, while wooden shelving is sturdier for heavier items. Installing adjustable shelving systems provides maximum
versatility to display accessories, and keep your totes and bins organized.”
HANG THINGS THE SMART WAY
Hang your garments efficiently with a few of these tips. Use two rods at varying heights to hang twice the number of items. Use the highest-level rod for long items like coats and dresses. Smaller hangers and specialty hangers can be used for ties, scarves and belts to keep them organized and accessible.
USE BASKETS AND BINS
Baskets and bins are an effective way of storing smaller items like jewelry, linens, pajama pants, accessories and other items that don’t require hangers. Bins can be stacked and hidden in shelving to keep your closet looking neat and organized.
KEEP YOUR SHOES TIDY
Store your shoes with one from each pair facing in opposite directions to help maximize space. Put them in shelving or cubbies or get a shoe rack to keep them organized. There are also shoe storage solutions that can be mounted to your door or wall, angling downward to give you a clear view of what’s on the rack or
closet space
shelf. Shoe boxes are great for keeping dust at bay but are usually bulkier and take up more space. Rods can even be installed on your wall to hang your high heels from, creating a cool and organized look.
USE DRAWERS TO ORGANIZE LARGE AND SMALL ITEMS
Drawers are a great option for storing towels, pants and anything else that’s foldable. Plus, they slide away neatly for hidden storage but still give you access when needed. You can even use the top of the cabinet as another storage area. ●

September marks the beginning of a new school year for millions of students. A new school year contains a host of challenges for every student, but some, particularly those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), may face steeper challenges than others.
ADHD is common in both the United States and Canada. The Centre for ADHD Awareness Canada indicates between 5 and 7 per cent of Canadians have the condition. Such figures are disconcerting, particularly when considering the adverse effects of ADHD on academic performance. In fact, a 2019 study published in the Journal of the American
ADHD is common in both the United States and Canada. The Centre for ADHD Awareness Canada indicates between 5 and 7 per cent of Canadians have the condition.
Neurodivergence at school ADHD
Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry found that ADHD was associated with substantially lower performance in school independent of socioeconomic background factors.
The stakes are high regarding ADHD and academics, so as a new school year begins, students and their families can familiarize themselves with the condition to ensure it does not interfere with their efforts to do their best in the classroom in the year ahead.
WHAT IS ADHD?
ADHD is described as “a chronic condition of the brain that makes it difficult for students to control their behaviour.” Such characterization explains why the link between ADHD and poor academic performance is so strong. The AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) notes that students with ADHD often have trouble getting along with others and, if they have issues with attention, they can have difficulty learning.
BEHAVIORAL SYMPTOMS OF ADHD
The AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) notes that ADHD includes
three distinct groups of symptoms: inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Students with inattention may daydream and have a hard time paying attention, often do not seem to listen, may be easily distracted from work or play, and may not follow through on instructions or finish tasks. Students with hyperactivity may be in constant motion, exhibit difficulty staying seated, frequently squirm or fidget, talk too much, and be incapable of playing quietly. Students with impulsivity may frequently act and speak without thinking, run into a street without first looking for oncoming traffic, be incapable of waiting, and frequently interrupt others.
It’s important for parents to recognize that students with ADHD will not necessarily have all the symptoms. Symptoms are classified by the type of ADHD a person has, and a physician will indicate that upon diagnosis. ADHD cases are usually determined to be inattentive only, hyperactive/impulsive or combined ADHD, which includes symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.
ADHD can affect students both academically and socially. ●

BACK TO SCHOOL CHECKLIST A healthy start
Top 4 things to think about for back-to-school
etting ready for the new school year can be quite a task. It involves more than just buying new clothes; it’s about setting the stage for a successful year through planning and organization, ensuring health and safety, and establishing routines.
To help you transition smoothly from vacation mode to a back-to-school mindset, here are the top four things to consider as you prepare for the upcoming academic year.
STOCK UP ON SCHOOL SUPPLIES
Start shopping for school essentials such as stationery, lunch boxes and school bags as early as possible. This will give you time to snag those sweet deals and help you avoid the last-minute rush at stores.
GET YOUR EYES TESTED
Given that vision plays a crucial role in academic success, the Canadian Ophthalmological Society emphasizes the importance of ensuring good eye-health before getting back to school. Therefore, getting your child’s eyes tested and taking necessary actions should be on every parent’s to-do list before school starts.
DO A THOROUGH TECH-CHECK
In today’s digital age, technology and education go hand in hand. Therefore,
ensuring that any required devices such as laptops and tablets are in good working order and updated with the latest software should be a priority before getting back to school.
However, Dr. Vivian Hill, a Canadian pediatric ophthalmologist, urges kids to take precautions during digital/screen time use such as limiting near-screen time (closer than 30 cm), following the 20/20/20 rule (for every 20 minutes that you spend on the screen, look at least 20 feet in the distance for at least 20 seconds) and committing to regular outdoor time like walking to school, or during recess and lunch breaks.
GET BACK INTO THE ROUTINE AT LEAST A WEEK PRIOR
Start adjusting bedtime and wakeup times at least a week before school begins. This helps ease the transition and ensures everyone is well-rested and ready for the first day. Establishing a consistent routine early can reduce stress and make the return to school smoother.
By taking care of these essential tasks before the school year begins, you can set yourself and your family up for a successful and stress-free academic year ahead. ●

The best times to shop around for deals
hen you’re in the market for a new or used car you don’t buy the first one you see. It’s important to shop around and do your research to find the best deal. But what is the best time of year to do so? Here are the top three times of year to get the best bang for your buck:
BACK TO SCHOOL
For many Canadians, the back-toschool season means the end of summer, a time when kids grab new pencils for the upcoming year and parents head back into their routines. It is also the time when telecom companies offer the best deals to entice students and parents to upgrade or purchase new plans and save money. If you are in the hunt for a new phone and plan, take advantage of the season and head to your local mobility store or search online for their latest deals.
HOLIDAYS
A time of year for family, friends and celebrations for many, it is also known as the most important shopping season of the year (and for good reason). From clothes, coats, cushions and counters, retailers across the country often offer their most competitive deals of the year. Beginning in November until the end of the year, you will be hit with an onslaught of TV, radio and online ads letting you
know of the savings to be had. Don’t forget to stay organized and keep a list of deals as they come so you can take advantage and shop smart.
END-OF-SEASON
The end of a season is often the best time to shop around for deals because retailers typically need to make room for new merchandise. From clothing to accessories, outdoor gear and beyond, retailers offer deep discounts on seasonal items to clear out remaining inventory. Purchasing items at the end of the season can often mean higher-quality products at a fraction of the original price, maximizing the value of your purchase. Waiting to shop during certain times of the year offers numerous benefits, including access to discounted prices, increased purchasing power, strategic planning opportunities and the ability to capitalize on seasonal trends. By being patient and timing your purchases strategically, you can make the most of your shopping experience and save money in the process.● – News Canada
