Reduce, reuse, and recycle are the first three words Canadians learn when taught to protect the environment from plastics. All three of the “R’s” play an important role in sustainability, but reducing waste is more important than you think. If we focus on reducing our individual plastic use, we can avoid the unnecessary use of essential resources, including materials, energy, and water.We live in the age of disposable products and heavy plastic packaging. Although these products are often convenient, they can impact the environment. In Canada, we generate over 3 million tons of plastic waste a year, and one-third of that amount is from plastic packaging. While the COVID-19 pandemic has been difficult for everyone it has made almost half of Canadians more aware of the amount of waste they generate. Some simple ways to reduce your plastic waste include: choose products with less packaging Often products contain additional packaging used for advertising purposes. This packaging is not necessary and more often ends up in the waste. The persistent supply shortage shows that the root of the housing crisis is complex, and they run much deeper than what many of the proposed surface–level solutions can address. The real solution is more housing supply needs to be built, and it can only come from a concerted effort involving all sides, from governviders, investors, and residents. We need a comprehensive series of reforms and improvements designed to make it easier to build in Ontario. This includes everything from modernized zoning laws that make sense in today’s cities, to shortening and streamlining approval processes, and helping builders and investors better cope with rising construction costs among other things. All those things, as they stand, serve to make building harder and cause the supply gap in WorkingOntario.together with public oflutions that work well for everyone and create better cities for the future. Addressing NIMBY concerns by better informing the public on the implications of the supply shortage will also be crucial. The recently released Ontario Housing Task Force report provides a good blueprint for addressing those issues, but now we need to follow through. All of us have an important role to play. The Federation of Rental–Housing Providers of Ontario (FRPO) has launched the Let’s Build Ontario campaign to help come up with innovative and equitable solutions to Ontario’s rental housing supply shortage. Let’s Build Ontario is interested in hearing your thoughts, and the thoughts of every Ontarian renter impacted by the supply shortage. If you want to be part of the solution to the crisis, join the campaign and share your thoughts and ideas. One of them could help solve the housing crisis in the province for good! And if you like what you see, share the campaign with your family members, friends, neighbours, and colleagues. The more voices promoting new, fair solutions to the crisis the better. Solving a complex ly will require wide participation, especially from those that are more likely to be impacted by it. More supply is the only solution to Ontario’s housing crisis, and you could play a big role in securing it.
Ontario is in a housing crisis that has seen availability plummet and prices spike to record numbers. Finding a good, affordable home is becoming harder every day for many Ontarians, and renters are especially impacted. Before the COVID–19 pandemic, vacancy rates for purpose–built rentals in Toronto and the GTA –where half of Ontario’s renters live – dropped to below 1%. That is a critically low number that is the direct result of the supply gap in the province. Ontario is currently adding about 24,000 fewer purpose–built rental units than needed to the market each year, which will lead to a shortfall of more than 200,000 units by the end of the decade. Compounded by low turnover rates, that means lower availability and higher rent prices for Ontario renters. And if nothing changes, availability will continue to fall, and prices will continue to rise as the supply gap worsens.
