5 tips to get your family into a new routine

Adjusting to a new rou tine can be difficult, especially for children and pets. Whether it’s going back to school or starting a new job, change can cause anxiety and stress. However, with proper planning you can ease everyone in gradually instead of all at once.

1. Build a schedule as soon as you anticipate a change, so you can ease your family into a routine. Discuss the timetable and agree on a date to begin implementing changes slowly.

2. Your new schedule can only succeed if everyone is coop

erative and does what they are tasked to do. Set goals for family members that are real istic and attach a timeline, so everyone knows when they are to be met. This will ensure ev eryone is held accountable for their promises and the success of this transition. Set up fam ily meetings to celebrate mile stones and to keep everyone motivated.

3. Set phone reminders, place postit notes in main family areas, or use the end of a television pro gram to prompt an action, like a bedtime routine, dinner prep,

walking a dog or changing a litter box.

4. Introduce new people gradually. If you need a sitter, see if they are compatible with your child or pet. Make sure you are present the first few times a sitter is over, so kids and pets can build trust and respect.

5. If you have pets, practicing alone time is key as they need to time to understand you’ll come back. To avoid separation anxi ety PetSmart suggests practic ing leaving and coming back, all while gradually increasing the amount of time you stay away. ■

Moving an elderly loved one can be tough.No one wants to upset that person and everyone wants the move to go as smoothly as possible. This can seem like mission

Theimpossible.childrenand families of the Baby Boomer generation – people born between 1946 and 1960 – are already helping their loved ones move into downsized or elderly assistance accommodations and often are not emotionally prepared for the task at hand.

Senior loved ones can be very set in their ways and often are not well equipped to express their emotional frustrations in a constructive way as moving day draws closer.

It all can seem like a daunting task.

Over the years, we have packed and moved many seniors and the important thing is to stay organized, be patient, calm and respectful throughout the entire moving process.Ifyou are moving a senior loved one into a retirement facility or a condo, you should first contact the management to find out what they are allowed to bring in, appropriate moving hours and if they have any tips specific to their facility to help smooth the moving process.

Remember the following: organize, begin packing weeks in advance

If your loved one is moving from a large home to a one-bedroom condo, there will be more furniture than needed. Get a floor plan of the new space and help your senior plan the space with their favourite furnishings, then help them decide what to do with the left overs. If the item is a family heirloom and cannot be accommodated in the new space, suggest giving it to a close family member like a favourite grandchild.

sort before you pack

Seniors tend to collect things they don’t need or use. Be sensitive when suggesting to get rid of possessions. Ask if they use the item and if they would mind if you donated it to raise money for the Salvation Army, for example. Start packing early to avoid feeling overwhelmed as moving day draws closer.

pack, clean as you go

When helping sort and pack your senior’s belongings keep in mind that their eyesight and reduced mobility prevents them from doing regular chores and can result in poor housekeeping habits. Instead of commenting, offer to clean as you pack and try not to be judgmental.

you will need more time than you think

Allow enough time so your loved one doesn’t feel rushed. Sorting through years of stuff is difficult and sometimes emotionally painful. Allow your loved one time to say goodbye. If they take longer to clean out the desk drawer because they found a stack of pictures, let them take the time to walk down memory lane. This is a very important part of the process. Be patient and listen to their life stories, there will come a time you will be glad you did.

This prevents items like knickknacks from becoming lost or mistakenly thrown out.

label boxes on top and sides

Make sure to mark the top and sides of boxes as they’re packed and write in large letters to make it easier for your loved one to read.

Make sure to label boxes containing breakable or sentimental items as ‘fragile’.

pack all electronics in the original boxes

Otherwise, use low-static bubble wrap when packing these items.

use packing paper

When wrapping fine china and precious items, do not use newsprint because the ink can bleed.

seal with packing tape

This makes it easier to stack and protect your senior’s belongings.

use boxes designed for items you are packing

Invest in dish packs for dishes and wardrobe boxes for clothing. Wardrobe boxes make it easy for seniors to access their clothing on hangers.

check clothingunwantedbeforedonating

It’s a good idea to sort unwanted clothing for donation prior to moving. Before donating any gently worn unwanted clothing, check pockets for valuables. Seniors often hide small valuable items like jewelry or cash in the pockets of suit jackets or shoes and forget where they hid it.

make your loved one’s new space feel familiar

Take pictures and colour samples of the inside of their current home. Try to decorate the new space and place objects in a similar way, so that their new space will feel like the old one. Be as detailed as you can, from arranging the bedroom furniture to placing family pictures on the bureau. This will help make the new surroundings feel like home. n

Maintaining apartment buildings is important for tenant safety and well-being. Rentalhousing providers have an obligation to their residents to make sure that they are living in quality units that feel safe and comfortable. Maintaining an apartment building may seem straight forward and easy, but it takes a lot of planning, financial support and dedication from owners, managers, and on-site staff alike to ensure that their tenants live in quality homes. However, maintaining an apartment building is a communitywide responsibility. While rentalhousing providers are seen to have the biggest responsibility when it comes to maintaining an apartment building, the tenants also have a responsibility of supporting that maintenance by cooperating with management to ensure that buildings stay in a good state and repairs are conducted in a timely manner. Our buildings are homes to all of us, and we need to work together to keep them in good condition.

According to the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA), both the rentalhousing providers and the tenants have an obligation to maintain and repair the rental property. It is important to note that these obligations are true for any and all rental agreements.

The rental-housing provider has responsibilities that include repairing and maintaining the property and meeting property standards. The provider should always keep the building in good condition. Electrical, plumbing and heating systems should be always functioning, as should appliances, windows, doors, locks, lighting, garages, laundry rooms and other amenities offered. Walls, roofs, ceilings, carpets and walkways should be repaired as needed as well to withstand the test of time. In the case that something stops functioning due to wear and tear, the onus is on the provider to replaceAdditionally,it. the rental-housing provider needs to keep the property clean, which ranges from making sure common areas are tidy and clean to taking care of any pest issues. Property standards are outlined in municipal bylaws and provincial maintenance standards.

Rental-housing providers should also make sure that their building follows fire safety laws as outlined by local fire departments.

Finally, the provider should also maintain and not interfere with vital services, which include hot/ cold water, fuel, electricity, gas and heat (during specific months).

The provider needs to make sure that they are always supplying these services regardless of specific situations such as overdue rent.

tenant responsibilities

The tenant should keep their rental unit clean. As long as the state of the unit does not have an effect on other tenants, the cleanliness of their unit is generally left to their own judgement.

In case of damages that are not due to normal wear and tear, but due to damage by the tenant or their guests, the tenant will be required to pay for the repair or take care of it themselves.

The maintenance of the apartment building relies on the strong relationship between the rentalhousing provider and the tenant. It is great communication between the two parties that ensures the maintenance of the building. If there is a problem, the first thing a tenant should do is notify their rental-housing provider to help solve the issue. And rental-housing providers should do the same thing. If the tenant is not keeping up with standards, the rental-housing provider should ask the tenant to make changes as necessary to fix the problem.

Middle Eastern recipe you can make for lunch

Za’atar Haloumi Sandwich

Prep time: 5-10 minutes Cook time: 10 min Serves: 6

Ingredients:

• 12 oz (340 g) Haloumi, sliced into 1/4” slices

• 2 tbsp (30 ml) extra virgin olive oil divided

• 1 lemon

• 2 tsp (10 ml) za’atar

• 3/4 cup (175 ml) hummus

Directions:

• 6 tbsp (90 ml) olive tapanade

• 3 Roma tomatoes, sliced

• 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced

• 3/4 (175 ml) cup microgreens

• 1 loaf (12 slices) Stonemill Bakehouse Chia and Supergrain bread

1. Heat a grill pan over medium heat with olive oil. Add the haloumi, cooking on each side until you have nice grill marks. Do this in batches if needed so as not to crowd the pan.

2. Add a pinch of salt, pepper, za’atar and lemon zest. Before removing from the pan, add a squirt of lemon juice. Set aside.

3. For each sandwich, add two tablespoons of hummus on one slice of 4.bread.Add a tablespoon of olive tapenade onto another slice of bread. Layer the tomatoes, haloumi, red onions, and microgreens.
