THE SIMPLEST BABY BOOK IN THE WORLD WORDS BY MARYLENE VESTERGOM So, you’re having a baby? Just hearing the news may bring on a case of a panic attack. Or maybe you’re going to your tenth baby shower, and friends and family are just too eager to offer parenting advice. Or perhaps you’re overwhelmed by the self-help books, which may not be easy to understand. After all, you just want the facts, and if someone can give you the crib notes in bullet points – perfect. And if it includes pictures and illustrations, now you’re talking. Well, author Stephen Gross felt the same way. “As a new dad, I didn’t know much about raising kids and didn’t have a strong support group. I found the information out there – books, websites, blogs, videos, etc. – all too dense, overwhelming, and not simple enough for today’s needs.” So Gross, along with a host of experts including moms, dads, nurses, doctors, nannies and The Simplest Baby community – researched and curated the best and the most essential tips and wisdom into The Simplest Baby Book in the World.

Your grandmother may have had Dr. Spock, your mother may have sworn by the What to Expect series, but now YOU have your very own illustrated book, written like a Tweet or an Instagrammable post – the perfect “grab-anddo” guide with all the homework

done for you – distilled into the essentials. “Being a gay parent gives me a unique perspective on parenting, and it ultimately brought me to question many of the assumptions and expectations that exist in many traditional families that can adversely impact women,” says Gross. So, in case you think this book is only for moms, Gross ensured ûϯû ¿¯¿ö »æýÜ¿ Ķ â¿ öÐáðÜà solutions and clever workarounds for everyday baby issues by highlighting them with a Daddy Hack symbol. For instance, if sweet dreams are an issue for you and your baby, an inexpensive way to create a white-noise device is by recording a vacuum, TV or radio static, or a washing machine on your phone. You can also use one of the various music apps ûæ Ķ â¿ ĐÏÐûà âæÐöÃȨ As for tips partners can implement to make life easier, Gross suggests: 1. Know that there is no such thing as a perfect parent 2. Understand that breastfeeding is not for everyone 3. Share parenting

responsibility and work 4. Lose the fear and ask for help 5. Stop the guilt and stop trying to live up to expectations. No matter what stage you’re at Ðâ ûÏà ð¯óÃâûÐâÍ »Ē»ÜÃȣ ĒæýɚÜÜ Ķ â¿ The Simplest Baby Book in the World will answer your questions and provide solutions. This “grab-and-do” guide will be at your side every step of the way – whether you want to know what foods can be choking hazards or want an infographic illustrating how to child-proof each room of your house. So, next time you’re invited to a baby shower, or you overhear your friends offering parenting tips to a parent-to-be, give them a copy of The Simplest Baby Book in the World and quote the words of author Stephen Gross, “Don’t Panic – You Got This.”

pet contest! THE INSPIRATION OF THE PET LIBRARY BOOK SERIES WORDS BY LOCAL AUTHOR MICHELLE DA SILVA Our family had been thinking about getting a dog, but we weren’t sure if we were ready for one. A friend of mine told me that she’d read online about a place – I can’t recall the exact country – where you could borrow a pet to “try it out.” We didn’t end up getting a dog (adopted two cats instead), but # ϯ¿ áĒ пï Ìæó ûÏà Ķ óöû BÃû Library story! I wanted to write about a little girl who desperately wanted a pet but whose parents didn’t like pets. The tale was only too familiar to me. How often had I heard my daughter’s friends grumbling about how their parents wouldn’t let them have a pet? Any pet. Their parents told them that pets were “too much work... too much trouble”. And so, my heroin Audrey BÜýá Đ¯ö ºæóâȨ ÃÌæóà # ÃďÃâ Ķ âÐöÏÿ ¯ ¿ó¯Ìû æÌ ûÏà Ķ óöû ºææÛȣ ó¯â¿ 8ðÃâÐâÍȣ I knew that I was writing the beginning of what would become ¯ öÃóÐÃöȨ ÌûÃó # Ķ âÐöÏÿ ó¯â¿ Opening, I sent out a few queries to some traditional children’s book publishers but couldn’t place the story with any of ûÏÃáȨ ýû # ºÃÜÐÃďÿ Ðâ LÏà BÃû Library and started work on A Hare Raising Tale (Book #2) and Something Fishy (Book #3). and those of my characters. The sibling rivalry between the twins (Nick and Naomi), two of Audrey’s close friends in the books, came to life naturally. And Audrey’s quirky ways had me laughing out loud as I wrote. For me, that’s the magic of storytelling and what I truly love about writing: making characters come to life on the page. I started to think about selfpublishing but wasn’t sure that I was up for the task. Most writers have a day job that pays the ºÐÜÜöȨ æó ýöȣ Úýöû Ķ â¿ÐâÍ ûÐáà ûæ write is always a challenge in itself. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY MAKES A DIFFERENCE WORDS BY MARYLENE VESTERGOM Did you know, according to the 2019 participACTION Report Card on Physical Activity for Adults, three of the biggest positive effects physical activity can have on Canadians’ lives as we enter our 60s, 70s and 80s: increased mobility, independence and cognitive wellness. There is no question, as we age, our bodies take a hit. According to the participACTION study: along with “slowed reaction time, there is decreased muscle and bone strength, which directly reduces balance.” Dr. Greg Wells, a performance physiologist and a senior associate scientist at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto, says keeping the body limber as one age can only reap dividends. And it doesn’t mean you have to go to the gym. cityparent.com

“Exercise, whether it’s going for a walk around your neighbourhood, raking leaves or even playing with your grandchildren etc., keeps your DNA young. We have caps at the end of our DNA called telomeres, which are like aglets at the end of a shoelace. The length and strength of these telomeres increase and are maintained in people who exercise consistently. So, a 55-year-old runner has telomeres that are the same length as a 25-year-old, proof that regular exercise protects our DNA.” Most importantly, Wells wants people to know: “15 minutes of walking every day is enough to decrease risk from breast cancer and colon cancer by 24–40%. It doesn’t have to be hard exercise, and it doesn’t have to be very long – just 15 minutes a day will

have tremendous gains over time.” The good news: we can rewire our bodies and minds by being active. “It’s simple, we just need to move every day. The fact is 85% of our population doesn’t get enough physical activity to prevent a chronic disease. You don’t need to worry about hitting heart rate targets – you simply have to move.” Being active means building stamina. As we age, stamina can help us perform daily tasks such as walking up a set of stairs, grocery shopping and performing household chores. The key is regularity. Wells also points out that cardiovascular type exercises, including a brisk walk, cycling, or a yoga class, help make our heart, lungs, and blood better but

don’t forget resistance training. Whether you’re carrying your groceries, gardening, clearing your walkway from snow, anything that will put stress on our muscles æó ºæâÃö ûϯûɚö öðûÐĶ »¯ÜÜĒ challenging our muscular-skeletal system is helpful. “We traditionally think that aging is when our muscles get smaller, bones get weaker, and our brains stop working as well as they did when we were younger. However, a lot of research suggests these are not really a symptom of aging so much as a result of physical inactivity. So, what we think of aging is really a disease of being less active or not active enough.” We’ve heard it before – use it or lose it. When it comes to slowing the aging process, Wells, says the way we age is in our control. November 2021 | CITY PARENT

FINANCIAL LITERACY MONTH: LET’S START WITH OUR KIDS WORDS BY GAURAV KAPOOR As a kid, my parents taught me values that prepared me for success – and saving and planning was a priority for them. Their dedication instilled values and a öÃâöà æÌ »æâĶ ¿Ãâ»Ã ûϯû óÃá¯Ðâö today. This is what inspired the creation of Mydoh, a money management app and Smart Cash Card that enables parents to help their kids build good, long-lasting money habits.

RESEARCH SHOWS THAT INTERACTIVE ACTIVITIES ARE SIX TIMES MORE LIKELY TO HELP STUDENTS LEARN Life has drastically changed over the past two years, causing a dynamic shift in spending, and saving. We’ve all had to adapt to new digital spending platforms. Rather than going in-store, people prefer to shop online. Spending money has never been easier, which makes learning about Ķ â¯â»Ð¯Ü ÜÐûÃó¯»Ē ûϯû áý»Ï áæóà important, especially for our children. Financial literacy starts with our kids Research shows that interactive activities are six times more

likely to help students learn. Like any skill, the best way to learn something is by doing it every day. This is especially true for one’s Ķ â¯â»Ð¯Ü ÜÐûÃó¯»Ē ¯â¿ ð¯óÃâûö ¯óà integral to the everyday learning process for kids. A 2020 survey of 15-year-old students found that ûÃÃâö ĐÏæ û¯ÜÛÿ ¯ºæýû Ķ â¯â»Ãö with their parents scored 33 ðæÐâûö ÏÐÍÏÃó Ðâ Ķ â¯â»Ð¯Ü ÜÐûÃó¯»Ē than those who did not. Did you know that by age three, children can grasp basic money concepts? By age seven, money habits are already set. It’s clear that learning ¯ºæýû ðÃóöæâ¯Ü Ķ â¯â»Ã ¯û ¯ young age is an asset for the next generation.

æÌ Ķ â¯â»Ã Ðöȣ û¯ÜÛÐâÍ ¯ºæýû áæâÃĒ within the family is necessary to set your kids up for future success. Today, it has become easier for parents to teach their kids stronger money (spending and saving) habits and have fun while doing it. All it takes is a few taps on their phone, using real-life experiences such as chores, tasks, and allowances. My daughter is under four years old, so all I do is show her how the app works and start talking to her about money. While the experience might not make a huge difference at her age now, it does contribute to instilling important values for the future, ¯â¿ ûÏà º¯öлö æÌ Ķ â¯â»Ð¯Ü ÜÐûÃó¯»ĒȨ

Parents are the key No matter what your starting point or your own understanding

Technology use at its best According to recent research from MediaSmarts, parents report that

about 36 per cent of their 10 to 13-year-olds spend three hours or more per day using digital devices for reasons unrelated to schoolwork or learning. The ºÃâÃĶ û æÌ ûûÏâæÜæÍĒȣ ¿ÃďлÃö and digital learning tools is that we can use them at any time, to enhance learning with interactive experiences. We’ve tapped into that potential with Mydoh Play, which makes learning about money easy for kids with fun facts and trivia. Scouts Canada

SCOUTS ARE MAKING A #PROMISETOTHEPLANET Sunday, Nov. 7, Daylight saving time begins. What if you used that spare hour to do something sustainable? Scouts Canada has compiled a list of 10 ways to make a difference. In essence, sustainable development is about creating a better future for all by improving the environment’s health and raising the standard of living for all. 14

CITY PARENT | November 2021

The goal of Scouts Canada’s eightweek Around the World Challenge is to get kids thinking about sustainability and getting involved in the effort. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Scott’s globally are among the most prominent contributing youth group involvement groups. Efforts by the organization to inspire families to build

sustainable habits are outlined in 10 actions that community members can take within their spare time to positively impact the environment or society, each related to an SDG. 1. “Mental Health and Wellbeing” The importance of kindness cannot be overstated; it can make someone’s day and even leave a lasting impression. You can

improve your mental health and the mental health of others by doing random acts of kindness. 2. “Zero Hunger” – Food insecurity affects millions but reducing food waste will enable them to have equal access to food. Consider a meal made entirely from food scraps by taking chances and thinking outside of the box. Making soup or crispy cityparent.com

chips using a vegetable peel, turning broccoli stems into a slaw or using bread ends for a crunchy coating or toppings are easy ways to repurpose vegetable waste. 3. “Responsible Consumption & Production” – Give old belongings a new purpose by upcycling them rather than throwing them away. You can create art with broken items, transform old jeans into rag óýÍö æó û¯Ûà ͯó¯Íà ö¯Üà Ķ â¿ö ¯â¿ óÃĶ âÐöÏ ûÏÃá ĐÐûÏ öæáà ð¯Ðâû ¯â¿ hardware. 4. “Clean Water & Sanitation”Canada is also one of many countries that lack clean water. Make sure your Member of Parliament knows access to clean water is a priority for all Canadians. You can tell your elected representatives what matters to you by phoning or emailing them. Collective voices »¯â Ðâķ ýÃâ»Ã »Ï¯âÍÃȨ 5. “Life on Land” People are putting a great deal of pressure on pollinators, such as bats and bees, whose vitality is vital to plant life and food production. Make habitat for solitary bees and bats by constructing a bee hotel. cityparent.com

6. “Life Below Water” – Water is vital to the survival of life on Earth, providing oxygen, food and diverse habitats, but human activities pose severe threats to their survival. Please take a look at local rivers, lakes, or ocean shorelines and clean them up. Your child can then conduct a ö»ÐÃâûÐĶ » ÃđðÃóÐáÃâû ¯â¿ öÃà ÏæĐ plastic and trash affect water. Two sealable containers should be Ķ ÜÜÿ ĐÐûÏ Đ¯ûÃóȣ ÌæÜÜæĐÿ ºĒ ûÏà waste in one, and watched how it affects the other 7. “Climate Actions” – Take action on climate change by hosting a family campout on a

cool evening in your living room or backyard. Play climate charades themed around environmental harm and those that help it. Set up a tent or blanket fort and prepare a meal without electricity. 8. Inequality is reduced through education: it creates awareness, breaks down barriers, and creates allies. – We suggest you begin by reading the 94 Calls for Action of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Decide how you can be a more vital ally with your family and friends.

9. “No Poverty” – Collect and donate toys, clothing, school supplies, furniture, and kitchenware to organizations that support homeless and transitioning individuals. 10. “Quality Education” – Build a Little Free Library to promote neighbourly collaboration and remove barriers that prevent people from accessing books is an excellent example of quality education. Make sure your neighbours know about the location through your local community groups. November 2021 | CITY PARENT
