festive lifestyle TIPS TO PICK THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS TREE Christmas trees are among the most recognizable symbols of the holiday season, and the popularity of trees is undeniable. Christmas trees are big business in Canada, where Statistics Canada notes cash receipts from Canadian Christmas tree producers totaled nearly $163.5 million in 2022. Annual spending on Christmas trees underscores how important they are to holiday décor. Christmas trees serve as the centrepiece in millions of holiday home décor schemes, so it’s important to pick a tree that can shine in that role. This holiday season, celebrants can consider these tips as they look for the perfect Christmas tree. Measure the area where the tree will be placed A large tree can be awe-inspiring, but also can stick out like a sore thumb if it takes up too much space. There should be enough room around the tree for families and their guests to sit around it. The home interior experts at Better Homes & Gardens recommend leaving a minimum of six inches between the top of the tree and the 10 CITY PARENT | December 2023

symmetrical tree. However, a tree that’s misshapen or already has some sagging branches won’t make for an awe-inspiring addition to a home decor scheme. Find the trunk (if you can) A trunk that’s visible through the branches indicates the tree does not have dense branches, which will be necessary if homeowners want to dress the tree with ornaments. If it’s hard to find the trunk because of all the thick branches and green needles, then the tree is likely pretty healthy.

ceiling. If a tree topper will be added, make sure the top of the tree is at least 12 inches from the ceiling. Measure the area before leaving to buy a tree so it can fit nicely into the room and the surrounding decor. Try the shake test Anyone who has purchased a freshcut Christmas tree is undoubtedly familiar with the shake test, which remains an effective way to measure the dryness of the tree. A slight shake

will produce some fallen needles. If the needles are brown and few and far between, then the tree likely is not overly dry. However, a lot of falling green needles indicates the tree is already drying out, which means it could shed quite a bit and lose its looks before Christmas Day. Pick a tree with a symmetrical look Trees are living things, so it’s unlikely that buyers will find a perfectly

Test the needles The home improvement experts at Lowes note that needles should be flexible but still snap when bent sharply. Avoid trees with needles that are already losing their colour and can easily be pulled off. A Christmas tree garners a lot of attention come the holiday season, which only underscores the significance of finding a tree worthy of being the heart of holiday decor. – Metro Creative cityparent.com

TRADITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH CHANUKAH CELEBRATIONS Come December, the holiday season has hit full swing. Celebrants of various faiths and backgrounds participate in holiday celebrations, which are unique to each faith. Although Chanukah is a relatively minor holiday on the Jewish religious calendar, it has enjoyed a greater share of fanfare in recent years. That popularity is perhaps due to the proximity of Chanukah to another major December celebration featuring a bearded fellow in a red suit. Chanukah isn’t mandated by the Torah and isn’t even mentioned in the Hebrew Bible. Rather, it was created by the ancient rabbis.

century. The four sides of the dreidel are marked with different letters, which in German are G “ganz” (all), H “halb” (half), N “nischt” (nothing) and S “schict” (put). This dictates whether the player who spun the dreidel gets all, half, or nothing in the collective coin pot, or has to put in his own. Yiddish is quite similar to German, and the letters on the dreidel also correspond to the first letters of the Yiddish phrase “nes gadol haya sham,” which translates to “a great miracle happened here,” a reference to the Chanukah miracle. Time at home Unlike other Jewish holidays, Chanukah is celebrated primarily at home rather than in a synagogue. This means that family time is a big component of Chanukah celebrations, which include singing songs, praying, and cooking foods.

CHANUKAH BEGINS ON THE 25TH DAY OF KISLEV EACH YEAR. IN 2023, CHANUKAH BEGINS AT SUNDOWN ON DECEMBER 7 AND ENDS ON THE EVENING OF FRIDAY, DECEMBER 15. Judaism is one of the world’s oldest and most influential religions. World Population Review estimates there were approximately 15.2 million Jews worldwide in 2021. Many likely will participate in Chanukah celebrations. Chanukah begins on the 25th day of Kislev each year. In 2023, Chanukah begins at sundown on December 7 and ends on the evening cityparent.com

of Friday, Dec. 15. Here are some Chanukah traditions. Lighting the menorah Participants will light a special ninepronged menorah, sometimes called a hanukkiah. It is practice to light one candle per night to recall the miracle of the sacred lamp oil that lasted for eight days during the rededication of the Temple. The ninth candle (shammash)

is used to light the others. Lighting the menorah has been a primary ritual for at least 1,800 years. Lit menorahs are placed in prominent locations, including front windows in homes. Playing dreidel There are various stories about the origins of the dreidel, but historians say the first mention in Jewish writings did not occur until the 18th

Giving gelt and gifts Gelt was the gift of coin that would be given out to independent workers come Chanukah as an end-of-year gratuity. Later it became a way to offer small tokens to children. Today’s gelt is typically discs of chocolate wrapped in foil to resemble coins. Many families also give gifts during Chanukah, particularly on the sixth night. But Chanukah gift-giving generally is not to the extent of giftgiving in other religions. Gifts may be monetary but also can include gifts of time. – Metro Creative December 2023 | CITY PARENT 13

THE HOLIDAYS AROUND THE WORLD WORDS BY MARYLENE VESTERGOM ‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. Well, a mouse might not be stirring, but behind the scenes, there’s been a flurry of activity getting ready for the big day with family and observing popular customs. For instance, many will be busy getting a tree and decorating it with lights and tinsel; maybe a few lights will adorn the house. Then there’s the baking and cookie exchanges, from shortbread to gingerbread houses dripping in royal icing. Stockings are hung, and letters to Santa Claus are feverishly written. Oh, and we can’t forget the presents. And after feasting on the traditional turkey and all the trimmings, it’s time to settle in and watch a few Christmas favourites like Elf, A Christmas Story, or A Charlie Brown Christmas. But what if we suggested you switch out the turkey for Kentucky 18 CITY PARENT | December 2023

Fried Chicken (KFC), or you decorate your tree with a spider for good luck, and instead of hanging a stocking for Santa to fill with gifts, you leave a pair of shoes under your bed? Sound weird? Well, the festive season is celebrated in many different ways around the world. Here are just a few. In Japan, a clever marketing idea can be traced back to 1974, with the opening of KFC, which started a tradition that thrives to this day. “Kentucky for Christmas” (Kurisumasu ni wa Kentakkii) is something that some 3.6 million Japanese families celebrate. What better way to get together with family than over a holiday bucket of KFC. Even Colonel Saunders gets into the spirit by appearing in a Santa outfit. Hanging an artificial spider and web on your tree is a tradition in Ukraine that dates back centuries and is thought to bring good fortune to the family. In Germany, the final ornament

to be placed on the tree looks like a pickle and the first child to find it on Christmas morning gets a special gift. Witches and evil spirits are believed to arrive in Norway on Christmas Eve. So, brooms are always put away before bed. While in Australia, starting Dec. 1st, Santa’s elves magically appear in homes. Think of it as the elf on a shelf. These elves act as Santa’s scouts, checking to see whose been naughty and nice, and report back to Santa every night at the North Pole. The next day, the elf is back in the house but never in the same hiding place. The hijinks of the elves’ game of hide-and-seek makes it fun for the kids, as they can’t wait to find him the next day. It’s no surprise, with the help of Santa’s scout elves, the kids are on their best behaviour – at least until Santa arrives. And speaking about elf magic, people living in Mobile, Alabama, decided to celebrate the season by

staging an Elfapalooza event. They attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of Santa elves. To qualify, strict elf attire had to be followed, which included pointy ears, a pointy hat, and a combination of green and red clothing. Although unsuccessful (that honour still belongs to a company in Bangkok, Thailand, that gathered 1,762 people dressed as elves), Elfapalooza was a huge hit and a fun and memorable way for a community to celebrate the spirit of the season. Who knows, maybe there are a few wannabe elves in your family, and you could start your own Elfapalooza. So, however, you decide to celebrate the holidays, remember the best part is being with family and friends. P.S. If you want to send your list to Santa and get a reply by Christmas, send your letters to Santa Claus, North Pole, Canada, HOH OHO by Friday, Dec. 8th. cityparent.com

family fun ALL ABOARD, THE PORTAGE FLYER CHRISTMAS TRAIN RIDE WITH SANTA WORDS BY ANDREW HIND Telling the story of a young boy aboard a magical train bound for the North Pole, the Polar Express has become a holiday classic. The experience isn’t confined to film. You can board an enchanted holiday train as well, in Huntsville, aboard the Portage Flyer Christmas Train Ride with Santa. There’s something magical about the Portage Flyer at any time of year. From 1903 to 1958, the historic train operated along the world’s shortest commercial railway, a mere one mile in length, linking Lake of Bays to Peninsula Lake. But Christmas magic is a special kind of magic, and on the weekend before The Big Day the train comes alive with holiday cheer. The excitement is palpable. Crowds gather at the rail station, moods buoyant. Smiles stretch cross little 20 CITY PARENT | December 2023

faces as they nibble on cookies and sip hot chocolate. Some sing along to carols playing from loudspeakers. Carrying upon the breeze, like the jingle of sleighbells, comes the clang of a bell and the blast of a horn. Anticipation builds. Then, the Portage Flyer chugs into view, her open cars decked out with thousands of twinkling lights. She looks like a scaled-up version of the little trains that circle under a children’s Christmas tree – festive, cheerful, promising a ride to some special destination. Everyone clambers aboard, nestling up close to loved ones. The train gently, slowly, pulls ahead. The frozen Muskoka River slides past. Ten minutes later, the destination, the purser’s cabin, comes into view. And it is special, indeed. For inside, Santa awaits.

Children jump into the Jolly Old Elf’s lap, whispering wishes, perhaps pleading their case to be added to the Nice List. Mom and Dad snap a few photos. Then, back aboard the train for the return trip, the evening chill warded off by the warm glow of Christmas spirit. Other Festiva Fare in Muskoka Yuletide cheer isn’t reserved for the Portage Flyer. Shop: If you’re looking for something to make your home merry and bright, Christmas Tyme, located in Huntsville at the intersection of Main & Brunel, is the place to go. It’s a one-stop shop for Christmas décor. Don’t forget to transform your purchase from merely a decoration to a special keepsake by getting it personalized. Christmastyme.ca

Stay: Deerhurst Resort, just a snowball throw east of Huntsville, is the perfect place to spend a winter weekend. Nestled into grounds that become a winter wonderland once the ground is blanketed in thick mounds of white, the resort offers comfort and class, with plenty of amenities and activities for the entire family. From Dec. 22 to Jan. 7 Deerhurst is further enlivened with sleighloads of special holiday events. deerhurstresort.com See: Santa makes additional appearances at SantaFest, a celebration of everything holly and jolly at Santa’s Village, in Bracebridge. Rides, a Christmas market, more lights than you can shake a candy cane at, fireside hot chocolate – it’s all here. santasvillage.ca cityparent.com

pregnancy NORTH YORK GENERAL HOSPITAL AND FOUNDATION’S NEW BOOK AUTHENTICALLY AND HUMOROUSLY NORMALIZES PREGNANCY AND BIRTH WORDS BY LORRAINE PELLEY North York General Hospital is going through a transformative renovation that, once complete, will reflect the renown care, services, and comprehensive programs it is known for. As one of the biggest pre- and post-natal facilities in North York, the Birthing Centre helps thousands of families bring their newborns into the world every year. Once completed, the $32 million renovation project will include private and accessible birthing rooms and facilities that meet the needs of all parents, with beautiful, inclusive lounges where family members can gather, and the most state-of-the-art technology to make the labour and delivery the best experience for new parents. It will be a warm, welcoming, and safe centre where patients want to be in and staff feel proud to be part of. As part of the fundraising efforts and to celebrate this monumental renovation, the North York General Hospital and Foundation developed and published a book What No One Tells You When You’re Expecting for expectant and new parents. Seanna Millar, President and CEO of the North York General Foundation, oversaw the development of this exciting book. The book talks openly and candidly about events, feelings, and bodily changes and functions that are part of pregnancy, labour and delivery, and post childbirth. It is designed to normalize all these events and bodily functions so parents of all genders and ages don’t feel alone about their pregnancy, labour, delivery, and newborn care experiences. 26 CITY PARENT | December 2023

The statements in the book were submitted by current and former family members and patients of the North York Birthing Centre. The hospital and foundation board members ran an open campaign on their website and social media platforms to reach out to parents to request participation. They also provided promotional materials to affiliate doctors offices and kept brochures, pamphlets and posters in

the hospital to invite patients to submit their comments for the book. The response they received from the community was overwhelming. As the board reviewed the submissions, they used the pattern they found in the statements to organize the content and create the chapters of the book. What No One Tells You When You’re Expecting has nine chapters covering a variety of topics including: pregnancy, birth, post-birth and recovery, feeding,

poop, sleep, life with a baby, sex and relationships, and feelings. All the comments and statements in the book are easily relatable to new and experienced parents. The pages are full of honest and candid comments like, “I didn’t expect my nose to blow up like a balloon while I was pregnant.” Throughout the book, doctors, nurses, and midwives also provide brief explanations of why certain functions or experiences occur so readers can fully understand what they and their newborn are going through. The pages are beautifully designed using vibrant colours and eyecatching illustrations by Illustrator Emilie Muszcozak, a well known Freelance Art Director and Illustrator in Toronto. The beautiful simplicity of the books not only creates a visually appealing book but is easy to read and navigate through. Those who have experienced having a baby will smile and laugh as they read the statements from other parents and realize their own experiences, while normal, are rarely if ever talked about. This book is not only a celebration of the renovations of the hospital, it is also a celebration of North York’s community. What No One Tells You When You’re Expecting is available in a free PDF format at WhatNoOneTellsYou.ca. Additional and future parent submissions are posted on this website as well. For those wanting a hard copy version of the book, it is available on Amazon. All monies from the purchase of the book go back into the hospital and foundation. cityparent.com

FEATURED | CAMPS COOKSMART Feeding your child is a big responsibility – teaching your child to feed themselves as they become independent is just as important. For parents who don’t have the time, skills, or patience to teach their children how to cook, relax – we’re here to help. COOKSMART was developed by a parent, Kathy Stewart, who as a nutritionist, understood that the best solution to creating long-term health starts by making smart food choices from an early age, especially with more exposure to vegetables and fruits. As a teacher, she recognized that building kitchen confidence by engaging children at their level to learn cooking skills was the smartest way to help our children become healthy adults. Our structured program helps children learn cooking and baking basics to create snacks and meals they will be able to replicate at home for themselves throughout their life. Join us for our online Holiday Baking and Gift making workshops or give your child the opportunity to really learn some hands-on skills at our in-person day camp programs! cooksmart.ca
