5 tips for dealing with inflation

Four in 10 Canadians re port that money is a dai ly concern for them, and one third of low-income Canadians admit to worrying about money almost constantly. With inflation at its highest level in more than 30 years, it’s more

important than ever for us to be come financially literate. Here are 5 money saving tips to help keep you afloat.

build a budget

The first step towards finan cial security is to create a budget

that you can stick to. Your budget should track all of your income and expenses, including food, housing, transportation and entertainment. If your monthly expenses exceed your income, you’ll either need to cut back on spending or find ways to bring more money in.

4Rent.ca November 25–December 9, 2022 8 INFO YOU CAN USE

cut back on frivolous spending

It’s become a bit of a cliché to ad vise people to stop buying takeout coffees to save money. And it’s true: with tax and tip a coffee can easily cost $5 to $10. But don’t make your self miserable. If that cup of java is

a daily indulgence that makes you happy, look for other small ways to cut back that can add up to big sav ings.

avoid high-interest payments

Credit cards are a handy way to pay for things and can even earn you cash back or other rewards. But the interest rate on credit cards is very high, often 20 per cent or more. And, if you don’t pay off your full balance monthly, the interest is charged from the date of purchase.

If you can’t pay your credit card bills in full, see if you qualify for a line of credit. These have much lower interest rates so you can start paying down your debt.

use coupons

Using coupons is a great way to lower the cost of staple items such as

groceries, diapers, personal hygiene products or to splurge on an occa sional fast-food treat.

In addition to the printed coupons that come in the mail or newspapers, there are numerous online resources for coupon clipping.

shop on sale

Hold off on purchasing bigger tick et items until they go on sale. Most retailers have recurring sales promo tions on certain items. A sales associ ate may be able to let you know when the next cycle will start. And make note of upcoming seasonal sale peri ods such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

the holiday season and annual parties are just around the corner

plan ahead so your holiday spending doesn’t spiral out of control

It’s always an exciting time of year, but that excitement can be dampened by worry if you’re facing a financial shortfall. Here are five ways you can prepare for the holidays without breaking the bank.

party planning

Instead of meeting friends at a res taurant or bar, consider hosting a lowkey potluck at home. You could even set up a rotation schedule for hosting key holidays throughout the year.

dress for success

Tired of wearing the same outfit to every party every year? Rather than paying full retail price, try thrifting or shopping at a consignment store. If you need a one-time fancy outfit, consider a dress or suit rental com pany.

gifts from the heart

Are you a painter, knitter, or have some other crafting hobby? If so, rather than buying presents for friends and family, make your own

gifts. Wherever possible, put a per sonalized spin on things.

And rather than having to buy gifts for all of your friends and fam ily, encourage them to join in on Se cret Santa exchanges.

charitable giving

There’s always a big push to make charitable donations over the holi day season. If you are able to donate to a registered charity, you’ll get a receipt that will earn you an income tax deduction in the spring.

set a budget

The only way you’ll know how much money you’re spending is to create a budget that tracks all of your expenses, big and small. Yet less than half of all Canadians have a budget. ABC Life Literacy Canada’s Money Matters program can show you how to create one. The program also of fers other free money management resources, including workbooks, ac tivities and workshops. working remotely? how to optimize your

Though social distanc ing has been in place for months now, perfecting our work-from-home setup continues to be a challenge for many of us. Here are a few surprising ways that you can streamline your routine

using your mobile phone from any where:

consider dark mode

Need to give your eyes a break?

While blue light blocking glasses can help, another option is to give your

eyes a rest by catching up on email from your phone using dark mode, which will help alleviate strain as you read.

get a stand

your setup

if you’re having to move rooms to accommodate other family mem bers’ schedules. That said, the quickly draining battery and con stant holding can be a pain. Look for a phone stand that has a builtin charger so battery life doesn’t

slow you down and you can dial in hands free.

Wi-Fi vs data

With home now acting as every thing from the boardroom to the movie theatre, it’s worth assessing

your internet plan to ensure you get good download speeds and a reli able signal. But Wi-Fi is only half the equation. Connect with an unbiased mobile expert like those at The Mo bile Shop virtually or in store to make sure your mobile plan is working optimally for you right now. If you have internet issues, you may want to consider an unlimited data mobile plan, so you don’t get dropped from conference calls.

use alarms and reminders

Have you dialed in late to a virtual meeting since working from your home office? Set up reminders and alarms on your phone to add extra security for important meetings and mix in reminders to walk the dog or check in with the kids while you’re at it. Our routine has changed, we can all use an extra nudge or two.

create space

Whether we’re at home or out of the house during the day, many of us need constant access to our mo bile devices, so juggling the needs of family members who may need to get connected for at-home learn ing can be tough. Accessories like noise-cancelling headphones and phone stands can be game-changers if you’re not able to spread out. ■

budget-conscious recipe for keeping the family warm this winter

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we work, shop and even the way we eat. More than ever, we are looking for easy and affordable reci pes to cook from home.

Make sure every dollar goes as far as possible by shopping at a discount re tailer, like Giant Tiger. Not only do they have a large selection of kitchenware, cookware and food storage items, they have a grocery department that offers budget-friendly food, without compro mising on quality.

We spoke with Jerry Dzikowski, Di rector Category Management Grocery, who recommends trying the following crowd-pleasing potato soup. Its ingre dients are easy to find, have a long-last ing shelf life and provide a delicious, hearty, warm meal ready to feed the whole family. As an added bonus, you can double the recipe for leftovers for a busy night. ■

Hearty Potato Soup

Prep time: 30 minutes Total time: 30 min Serves: 4

Ingredients:

• 6 cups peeled and diced potatoes (about 5 medium potatoes, cubed to about 3/4 inch)

• 1 1/2 cups chopped yellow onion (1 medium)

• 1 1/4 cups peeled and diced carrots (3 medium)

• 1 cup diced celery (2-3 stalks)

• 1 tsp dried tarragon

• 14.5 oz. low-sodium chicken broth

Directions:

• 1/3 cup butter

• 1/3 cup all-purpose flour

• 2 1/2 cups 2% milk

• 1/2 cup sour cream

• Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Optional: 1/2 cup cheddar cheese and ½ cup bacon or ham (extra to garnish), for a savoury twist

Optional garnishes: Cheddar cheese, bacon or ham, and slivered green onion

1. Combine potatoes, carrots, celery, onions and tarragon with chicken broth in a large pot and season with salt and pepper.

2. Cover pot and bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium and continue to cook about 15 to 20 minutes longer until potatoes are very soft.

3. Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan melt butter, add flour and cook for 1 to 2 minutes while whisking. Stir in milk, then cook and stir until mixture begins to lightly bubble and thicken.

4. Once potatoes are soft, add thickened milk mixture to potato soup mixture and stir. Add sour cream and mix well. Stir in cheddar cheese and bacon or ham until mixed in.

5. Top as desired.

the right movers

Hiring the right moving company can save you lots of work, stress and headaches in the long run. Industry professionals are accus tomed to handling all kinds of moves, from apartments to homes and offices to larger offices. We understand how to pack, mark and transport items of all shapes, sizes and levels of fragil ity. We appreciate the importance of what we do, because people’s “stuff” is so much more to them than a col lection of items. It represents their lifestyle, memories, emotional con nections and fun. Although many consumers move themselves and do a good job of it, enlisting professional movers is the choice of many others. However, you do want to be careful that the company you hire is above board and upholds strict standards.

How can you tell?

Do your research by asking ques tions. Is the company a member of the Canadian Association of Movers (CAM)? This organization exists to help people find reputable movers they can trust. To explore a compa ny’s reputation, you can also contact the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and your provincial government’s con sumer protection agency.

Visit Mover.net to learn more about what CAM has to say – the first three things listed are: ask three movers for estimates in writing; get the terms and conditions of your move in writ ing; and ensure you know how your goods will be protected for loss or damage. If a company representative does not know how to answer your questions or glosses over them, a red flag should go up.

Communication is the number-one factor in a successful move. At Two Men and A Truck® – Canada, we have a Consumer Bill of Rights, the only one in the Canadian moving indus try. We also have a list of questions to consider when consumers are think ing about hiring a mover.

Of particular importance are the fi nancial considerations. For example, does the company have a minimum charge, and how are you charged af ter that minimum is met? Will you be charged for fuel or travel time to and from their office to your home or business? Will there be a fuel sur charge or a stairs or long-distance walk charge if they have to park the truck some distance from your door?

Is there a deposit required, and what kinds of payment options are available? Do they offer free quotes? How do they arrive at a valuation that is covered by insurance? Does the

mover have advice for how you can reduce your costs? It is also important to ask if they employ full-time work ers or use temps and day labour, and whether their employees are covered by Worker’s Compensation. Are their movers trained in how to pack and move carefully and efficiently?

Ask how to contact the firm’s office during moving day, in case there are issues. If all the representative offers is a cell phone number, be suspicious. In fact, it’s a good idea to visit the movers’ office to make sure it exists. Remember, anyone can make any thing seem real on a website.

It’s best for everyone involved to have a moving contract that outlines what is expected. Read it and ask questions about anything you don’t understand.

Hiring a company you can trust makes for a more comfortable, less stressful and successful move. ■

3 tips to go big and save big on

holiday décor

Transforming your home into a winter wonderland can be an exciting time for the whole family. Filling your living room with festive knick-knacks, showering the outside of your house and trees with lights – it’s enough to give anyone that fuzzy, warm feeling inside.

Although holiday decorating can be exciting, the bills that come along with your efforts can be a rude awakening

come January. Use these simple tips to make the most of your decorations this year, without the sticker shock.

1. Reusability. Make things easy. Pick items that can be re-used year af ter year like a classic, beautiful, artifi cial tree that can be pulled out without any fuss. Same goes for other décor –investing in timeless pieces you love will pay off over time.

2. Sometimes less is more. Your house doesn’t have to look like Santa’s

workshop to feel festive. Pick a few items that really put you in the holi day spirit rather than going all out. Going the minimalist route will make your home look chic and help you avoid the slippery slope into over whelming.

3. Make a list, check it twice: Christmas puns aside, making a list before you go shopping is helpful for making sure you don’t forget any of those holiday essentials. ■
