Whether we’re head ed to work, school or other commit ments, sky-high gas prices and inflation mean many of us are facing regular trips that are more expensive than ever.
While there’s not much you can do about prices these days, there are few steps you can take to save on your commute. Here are some ideas:

If you know you’re heading into the office, you can plan errands around your in-office day(s) and stop at destinations like the grocery
store, bank or pet store, on your way home. Running your errands on days that you’ll already be out driving can save you time in your schedule and may even save you money at the gas pump.

In good weather, you may try rid ing a bike to work to avoid filling up at the pump and enjoying the health benefits at the same time. But in the later fall and winter months when that may not be an option, try carpooling with colleagues – this can help you save on gas, and give

As long as you use them hands free, mapping or GPS apps can help you find the most efficient – and there fore cheapest – route. You can also try telematics – a usage-based program that follows your driving habits over time and tailors your insurance pre miums accordingly. Moving can be one of the most stressful events in life, so why should that be any different for your dog?
Here are 10 tips on how to prepare your dog:
10. never place them in moving trucks
Under no circumstances should you place your dog in the back of a moving truck. Even safely tucked in a well-ventilated pet travel carrier, the truck is almost always hot (even in winter) and of course, the doors are closed.
Dogs crave the attention of strangers and can create obstacles which will impede the move.
7. pack lots of treats
Have dog treats on hand for move day to keep him or her quiet. It’s also good way to get your dog to listen and obey. And, it’s a great idea to have water and nutritious human treats for your movers as well.
6. pack a separate box of your pet’s toys
Once at your new home, your dog may be frightened of the new surroundings, so, having familiar playthings ready will reduce stress levels.
5. let your movers know to expect fido
If your dog will be around during the move, let your movers know ahead of time. You’d be surprised how many men are afraid of dogs. Whether large or small animals, it doesn’t matter. Also, there are movers that are allergic to dogs.
9. make a doggy date
Your dog will most likely want to play with the movers and probably everyone else, so take him or her to a kennel, dog spa or have a friend or relative dog sit at their home, before the movers arrive. Those will be the best places for your furry friend; then you can devote your total attention to your moving activities.
8. give them space
If your dog must be with you during your move, keep your loved one outside or out of the movers’ way.
4. don’t ignore them
After the move you will be busy unpacking, so don’t ignore your dog. Take regular and long walks, if you can, to explore your new neighbourhood together or even short breaks from unpacking, to play. Time together will help your dog be better behaved during this change in everyone’s environment.
3. keep them hydrated
Don’t forget that your dog will be excited on move day and will need plenty of water. Exercise is
the best way to get your dog ready, more relaxed and calm for when the movers arrive. Depending on your dog’s age and size, draining his or her energy level may not be easy, so plan frequent walks. I know that a 30-minute walk barely makes a dent in our dog’s energy level.
2. use “mess” breaks
Make sure you let your pet out for “mess” breaks. Nothing will ruin your moving day experience more than a ‘surprise’ from your dog inside your new abode. Keep him or her on your property to avoid making a bad first impression on your neighbours.

Moving into new digs is a time to celebrate. Have the movers take a pictur of you, your family and your dog in your new home. What a perfect reminder of the day you just

A veggie twist on a family favourite
Want a healthier twist on a takeout favourite? Try this nutritious and delicious spin with cauliflower pizza, for those nights when you want a treat that’s as good for you as it tastes.
This kidney-friendly pie is perfect for those looking to limit their intake of sodium and phosphorus. It was developed by dietitian Hanna Kim for the Kidney Community Kitchen, a Kidney Foundation website that offers tasty recipes, tips and expert advice on how to make cooking fun, even if you have restrictions in your diet.
Try this pizza to prove cooking on a kidney diet doesn’t have to be boring. ■
Roasted Red Bell Pepper Cauliflower Pizza
Serves: 2
Ingredients:
• ½ head of cauliflower, stalk removed
• ¼ cup grated parmesan
• 1 tsp turmeric
• 1 tsp Italian seasoning
• ¼ tsp of salt
• 1 egg
Directions:
• ½ cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
• 2 red bell peppers
• 1 tbsp of olive oil + 1 tsp for drizzling on peppers and garlic
• 2-3 garlic cloves with peel
• 5 sprigs fresh basil
• 1 tsp cornstarch (or potato starch)
1. Preheat oven to 450°F. Wash and pat dry the bell peppers and place them and the unpeeled garlic cloves (this prevents the garlic from burning) on a baking sheet.
2. Drizzle on 1 tsp of oil and a dash of salt, then bake peppers and garlic for 30 minutes on the top rack until peppers look soft and brown.
3. While peppers bake, pulse cauliflower in food processor until it’s crumbly and a rice-like texture.
4. Line baking sheet with parchment paper, then spread riced cauliflower in a single layer and bake for 15 minutes in the same oven, on the rack below the bell peppers and garlic.
5. Check on peppers and garlic. Take out of the oven once ready and let cool for 10 minutes.
6. Peel and trim stems off peppers and peel garlic. Add peppers, garlic, olive oil and cornstarch to food processor and run on hitgh speed until mixture is finely pureed and smooth.
7. In a small pot, stir bell pepper sauce for 10 to 15 minutes on low heat until the sauce thickens; set aside.
8. Take cauliflower out of oven. After it cools, transfer to a clean cheesecloth or dishtowel. Squeeze out excess moisture and discard water.
9. In a large bowl, add riced cauliflower, spices, parmesan, salt and egg. Mix well.
10. Press dough into a circle onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper at ¼-inch thickness.
11. Bake for 30 minutes at 400°F until golden. Flip crust over and bake again for 10 more minutes.
12. Remove from oven and add roasted red pepper sauce, mozzarella and basil. Bake for an additional 5 to 10 minutes until cheese melts. Find more recipes at kidneycommunitykitchen.ca.

how to maintain our apartment buildings
Maintaining apartment buildings is important for tenant safety and well-being. Rentalhousing providers have an obligation to their residents to make sure that they are living in quality units that feel safe and comfortable. Maintaining an apartment building may seem straight forward and easy, but it takes a lot of planning, financial support and dedication from owners, managers, and on-site staff alike to ensure that their tenants live in quality homes. However, maintaining an apartment building is a communitywide responsibility. While rentalhousing providers are seen to have the biggest responsibility when it comes to maintaining an apartment building, the tenants also have a responsibility of supporting that maintenance by cooperating with management to ensure that buildings stay in a good state and repairs are conducted in a timely manner. Our buildings are homes to all of us, and we need to work together to keep them in good condition.
According to the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA), both the rentalhousing providers and the tenants have an obligation to maintain and repair the rental property. It is important to note that these obligations are true for any and all rental agreements.
rental-housing provider responsibilities
The rental-housing provider has responsibilities that include repairing and maintaining the property and meeting property standards. The provider should always keep the building in good condition. Electrical, plumbing and heating systems should be always functioning, as should appliances, windows, doors, locks, lighting, garages, laundry rooms and other amenities offered. Walls, roofs, ceilings, carpets and walkways should be repaired as needed as well to withstand the test of time. In the case that something stops functioning due to wear and tear, the onus is on the provider to replace it.
Additionally, the rental-housing provider needs to keep the property clean, which ranges from making sure common areas are tidy and clean to taking care of any pest issues. Property standards are outlined in municipal bylaws and provincial maintenance standards.
Rental-housing providers should also make sure that their building follows fire safety laws as outlined by local fire departments.
Finally, the provider should also maintain and not interfere with vital services, which include hot/ cold water, fuel, electricity, gas and heat (during specific months).
The provider needs to make sure that they are always supplying these services regardless of specific situations such as overdue rent.
tenant responsibilities
The tenant should keep their rental unit clean. As long as the state of the unit does not have an effect on other tenants, the cleanliness of their unit is generally left to their own judgement.
In case of damages that are not due to normal wear and tear, but due to damage by the tenant or their guests, the tenant will be required to pay for the repair or take care of it themselves.
The maintenance of the apartment building relies on the strong relationship between the rentalhousing provider and the tenant. It is great communication between the two parties that ensures the maintenance of the building. If there is a problem, the first thing a tenant should do is notify their rental-housing provider to help solve the issue. And rental-housing providers should do the same thing. If the tenant is not keeping up with standards, the rental-housing provider should ask the tenant to make changes as necessary to fix the problem.
