up front

JANUARY 26 IS “BELL LET’S TALK” Now more than ever, our communities are inundated with stigmas — the general lack of understanding of mental illness. Those who seek therapy most likely do so because of the impact caused by individuals who need therapy, too. Those who are ignorant of their own needs may not realize how their actions or words can effect others long-term. Through my research, it seems that everyone has some form of a dividing issue, or has inherited behavioural issues. We know so much more today than our ancestors, so it’s time to create a stigma-free world. The toughest and most challenging stigmas are created right in our homes by friends, neighbours, relatives and coworkers. When these issues have been established over time and become ÃâûóÃâ»Ïÿȣ ûÏÃĒ »¯â ºÃ ¿ÐÌĶ »ýÜû ûæ óÃáæďà and overcome. As a society, we attach stigmas to individuals and groups that are viewed negatively and often shame them for perceived shortcomings and differences. It is those individuals who need the most empathy and help to understand underlying issues. Social stigma often surrounds mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder or posttraumatic stress disorder. Depression sufferers are often stereotyped as lazy, while those with anxiety are deemed

spineless, but psychologists say that people with psychological issues want to lead normal, healthy and happy lives. According to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), there are seven things we can do to help reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. 1. Be informed. Get to know mental illness, addiction and other substance-use disorders. ƵȨ -âæĐ Ēæýó ¯ûûÐûý¿Ã ¯â¿ ºÃϯďÐæýóȨ EÃķ ûû æâ Ēæýó ýðºóÐâÍÐâÍ ¯â¿ öæ»ÐÃûĒɚö Ðâķ ýÃâ»Ã æâ Ēæýó ûÏÐâÛÐâÍȨ 3. Use your words wisely. We shape others’ attitudes through our words. 4. Teach others. Inform others of facts and dispel myths. 5. Look for the good. Addictions and mental illnesses are only a part of anyone’s overall picture. 6. Help others. Offer support, encouragement and dignity to all. 7. Include everyone. Discrimination against anyone with these issues is against the law. Whether you have children or not, a recommended read is, “The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read (and Your Children Will Be Glad That You Did)” by author Philippa Perry, a psychotherapist for the past 20 years. We wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year. Cheers to 2022 and remember, Que Sera, Sera, whatever will be, will be. Mary Racioppo Editor-In-Chief, City Parent

CBC’S NEW ANIMATED SERIES TAKES KIDS DEEP INTO THE OCEAN TO LEARN ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE WORDS BY LORRAINE PELLEY A new Canadian children’s animated series became available in December on CBC Kids and the CBC streaming service, CBC Gem. Big Blue is a lively and entertaining series that follows siblings Lettie and Lemo, along with their quirky submarine crew and a stowaway magical ocean fairy named Bacon Berry as they travel deep in the ocean to explore their world, unravel mysteries and address climate change issues. Throughout each episode, ďÐÃĐÃóö ĐÐÜÜ ÍÃû ûæ ÛâæĐ ûÏà Ķ ďà main characters as they work together to navigate their submarine around their ocean world and befriend other marine life. Designed for school-aged children between ûÏà ¯ÍÃö æÌ Ķ ďà ¯â¿ âÐâÃȣ ûÏà öÏæĐ premiered on Dec. 4, 2021 and is guaranteed to bring joy and laughter to its viewers while teaching them how to protect the earth.

Where traditional programs have had predominantly Caucasian characters addressing important issues about climate change, the Ķ ďà á¯Ð⠻ϯó¯»ûÃóö Ðâ ÐÍ Üýà are Black-Canadian youngsters. By representing a more diverse audience, Big Blue is showing their BIPOC viewers how valued and important their role is in protecting the planet. The show’s creator is one of the few Black children’s animators in Canada and one of the most prominent animators in the industry. Gariba was born and raised in Ghana. His love for

drawing grew while watching his two older siblings draw pictures. ÌûÃó Ķ âÐöÏÐâÍ ö»ÏææÜ ¯û ƴƺ Ēïóö of age, Gariba moved to Canada to pursue his post-secondary education in animation at Sheridan College. During his nine-year career, Gariba has gained a massive online following on his social media pages for his unique designs and illustration style. He was named one of Animation Magazine’s 2020 Rising Stars of Animation and one of “15 Young African Creatives Rebranding Africa” by Forbes Magazine. He created Big Blue four years ago when GURU Studios was looking for new pitch ideas. Although he is not a climate activist, Gariba is like most

Canadians, invested in doing his part to reduce climate change. The show’s main characters, Lettie and Lemo, are based on his two older siblings, while the young ocean fairy, Bacon Berry, is based on, and named by, his younger sibling. The show’s producer, GURU Studios, is a highly reputable, award-winning Canadian production company that is also involved in other highly popular shows such as PAW Patrol, True and the Rainbow Kingdom, ¯ 4Ãûķ Ðđ æóÐÍÐâ¯Ü öÃóÐÃöȣ ¯â¿ Disney’s Junior and Hulu. HOW TO AVOID BRACES AND IMPROVE YOUR CHILD’S ORAL HEALTH WORDS BY DR. MANDEEP JOHAL We are witnessing one of the most important health trends in human history and yet it is going seemingly unnoticed. We know that braces are expensive – they can cost anywhere from $3,000 to $10,000 per child! It is estimated that about 50 percent of children require ºó¯»Ãö ûæ Ķ đ Ìýâ»ûÐæâ¯Ü ðóæºÜÃáö

such as crowding teeth. Instead of spending thousands of dollars on treatment, what if we tried an alternative route to preventing crowded teeth to begin with? My journey started when I noticed my three-year-old son’s baby teeth were crowded, which was alarming as baby teeth are supposed to have space between

them. The search for why this happened and how to prevent future adult teeth from crowding led me to help many patients who were in situations similar to my son’s. One way to prevent teeth crowding and other severe dental issues is by improving tongue posture. The correct resting position for your tongue is pressed against the roof of your mouth with your lips sealed, rather than the tongue hanging and resting at the bottom of the mouth. The tongue is a powerful muscle and acts like natural braces during childhood, helping to develop the upper jaw properly. This allows enough room for the teeth to erupt and decreases the chance of narrow jaws and crowded teeth. Proper oral resting posture also allows for nasal breathing, which is the way we were biologically designed to breathe — not through the mouth. Mouth breathing dries out the mouth and lowers the pH of our oral microbiome. This is important because saliva acts to neutralize acids and harmful bacteria in the mouth. The risk of cavities is much higher in those who breathe through their mouth rather than their nose. Along with an increased risk of cavities and crowded teeth, mouth breathing can be detrimental to children in so many ways. Over time, chronic

mouth breathing contributes to the narrowing of the airway, which leads to snoring, sleep disordered breathing, sleep apnea, and overall poor sleep quality. In fact, many children are misdiagnosed with ADHD, when it is often an airway disorder and poor sleep impacting the child’s behaviour and development. Mouth breathing also leads to enlarged tonsils and adenoids, bad breath, gum disease, fatigue, trouble focusing, and poorer quality of life. If you have noticed that you or your child is a mouth breather, you may be wondering what to do next. The answer is to see a myofunctional therapist who will help re-educate the tongue and orofacial muscles for proper oral posture and function, breathing, swallowing and speaking through different physical therapy exercises. Correcting tongue posture and breathing issues early Ðö âæû æâÜĒ ºÃâÃĶ »Ð¯Ü ûæ æâÃɚö health but can prevent years and thousands of dollars’ worth of orthodontic work in the future. Raising awareness and sharing information is vital. Prevention is ÛÃĒȥ Hû¯óû ïóÜĒ ¯â¿ Ķ â¿ ¯â ¯ÐóĐ¯Ē dentist who can help children and babies as young as one month old. THE UNLIKELY ART OF PARENTAL PRESSURE WORDS BY MARYLENE VESTERGOM

Parents want the best for their children. That’s a given, and they will move heaven and earth to help their kids navigate bumps in the road. After all, parents want their kids to lead successful and purposeful lives. But there are times when well-meaning parents can exert unhealthy pressure — the kind that affects their child’s mental well-being and performance. Before you think you need to ease off the gas, Chris Thurber, Ph.D., and Hendrie Weisinger, Ph.D., authors of the book “The Unlikely Art of Parental Pressure”, say, “Pressure itself isn’t bad — the issue is how pressure is applied.” The Unlikely Art of Parental Pressure is peppered with Ķ »ûÐæâ¯Ü öûæóÐÃö º¯öÿ æâ óïÜɍ life experiences and anchored with extensive research. With humourous touches from the authors’ own parenting experiences, the book quickly transforms into a helpful guide offering step-by-step solutions. Each chapter reveals opportunities of self-discovery as parents tackle a most challenging vocation — parenting. “Pressure is instinctive,” says Thurber, “just like gravity is an ýâ¯ďæп¯ºÜà Ìæó»ÃȨ #û óÃķ ûûö the love a caregiver has for a child, but I don’t think anyone gets anywhere when they’re told to stop pressuring their kids. Pressure is an instinctual byproduct of wanting your child cityparent.com

to be happy, healthy and, in an evolutionary sense, to survive and to prosper. We focus on how parents apply pressure, not how much.” As an example, Thurber öýÍÍÃöûö ûÏà Ķ »ûÐæâ¯Ü öûæóĒ æÌ ûĐæ fathers at their daughter’s last soccer game of the season. One father reminds his daughter that how she performs will make or break her soccer career. The other father reminds his daughter that it’s not just the number of goals, it’s also assists that matter. “What characterizes unhealthy pressure in this example is the framing of that child’s behaviour and the desired outcomes as very high stakes and very narrow. When parents describe a door-die situation, that actually impairs performance rather than enhances it.” By contrast, Thurber says, “Healthy pressure can demand the same high standard, but outcomes are framed as opportunities, rather than makeor-break situations. Healthy kids Üïóâ ûÏÃóÃɚö âæ öÐâÍÜà ¿ÃĶ âÐûÐæâ æÌ success.” If there is one thing that Drs. Thurber and Weisinger want to stress, it’s that there’s no such thing as parenting perfectly. “After all, life is not like those television sitcoms, and not everything gets resolved at the end of those 30 minutes. Parenting is something you try to do a little bit better than you did the day before. But a lot of it goes unrecognized,

underappreciated, and yes, it’s full of missteps, and that is the nature of human parenting.” The Unlikely Art of Parental Pressure is a book every parent should have on their bedside table.

If you are motivated to change even a little bit, then this book is Ìæó ĒæýȨ #ûɚö ûÏà Ķ óöû öûÃð ûæĐ¯ó¿ö understanding the differences between unhealthy and healthy pressure while helping guide kids to be the best they can be. January 2022 | CITY PARENT

WHY I’M SICK OF APPLAUDING SLEEP DEPRIVATION WORDS BY AMANDA JEWSON, CANADIAN SLEEP EXPERT AND FOUNDER OF BABY’S BEST SLEEP Yesterday I got off a call with a soon-to-be client. She was a brand-new mom and her baby was eight-weeks-old. The refrain was familiar, “What have I done? Why didn’t anyone tell me? I’m not coping.” It was sad. What’s ö¯¿¿Ãó Ðö ûÏÐö Ðö âæû ûÏà Ķ óöû ûÐáà I’ve had this call — this week even! My clients have been clear, no one has prepared them for how challenging not sleeping is and the fact that for some, without interventions, they could be not sleeping for some time. What’s more, the support system around new parents applauds the sleepless nights that come with new parenthood. We make jokes that our new parent friends will never sleep again and we read blogs espousing the normalcy that infants wake several times overnight (this is normal) and the accolades we give new parents for doing it all (this is ûæđлɂȨ 8Ï Ē¯ ɌɬûÏÃóÃɚö ¯ ð¯â¿ÃáлȨ Some babies are only just meeting Íó¯â¿ð¯óÃâûö Ìæó ûÏà Ķ óöû ûÐáÃȣ others aren’t ready yet. The idea that new parents can do it all or are superhuman is toxic. And I know from personal experience. Hands up if you’re the person in your group that can ‘do it all’? Hands up if you’re the person who loves to ‘multi-task’? Hands up if you take pride in never saying no AND NAILING it in the end? This was me. For a long time. I have always been complimented 12

CITY PARENT | January 2022

on my work ethic. Bosses, teachers, family members and friends would always comment on my work ethic and would say things like, “If you can’t do it, no one can!’ And I believed them. I was that person. From the time I started working, especially in my teaching career, I’d take my work home and stay up to 10 p.m. making the BEST lesson plan or creating a new program. Didn’t have enough going on at work? I’d sign up for a course, professional development or create a new club at school. Not enough? I’d sign up for 5Ks and 10Ks to train for. Not enough? Why not learn sewing, and yoga and.. and... and. Then I had kids and for a long time, I was coasting around being that busy mom. I landed my dream teaching job when my Ķ óöû ¿¯ýÍÏûÃó Đ¯ö Ìæýó áæâûÏö old. I received accolades for my parenting and work ethic. I was applauded for having a small child

and working. People were wowed that I pumped three times a day at work and taught. But guess what? I was exhausted. To my core.

WE’RE MEANT TO HAVE TIME NOT WORKING. WE’RE MEANT TO HAVE EIGHT HOURS OF SLEEP. AND DOING THESE THINGS DOESN’T MEAN YOU’RE LAZY, OR BAD. YOU’RE RESTING I started to have panic attacks. Randomly. My hair started to fall out. I was worried about EVERYTHING. I

was getting sick all the time. But on the surface, I was doing ÃďÃóĒûÏÐâÍ # ýöý¯ÜÜĒ ¿Ð¿ Ɍɬ# X H GOOD at being busy. What the heck was going on? âûÃó ɌɬáĒ ûÏÃó¯ðÐöûȣ ĐÏæ basically nudged me into a couple of ideas: 1. The business was a way to mask feelings (spoiler alert, they always bubble up!) ƵȨ # ϯ¿ȣ " ȣ " ûæ Ķ â¿ Đ¯Ēö ûæ rest (really. She lovingly read me the riot act when I didn’t.) ƶȨ â¿ ûÏÐö Ðö ûÏà ÛлÛÃó ɌɬûÏà way I was living my life was destroying my physical health. The short story is that I got it together. The long story is that it’s still a process of unlearning the lessons we tell parents (mostly mothers). I am writing this today because I still see so much busy. So many parents doing it all. Moms bragging about giving birth while holding their cell phones writing work emails. I worry (I don’t judge) about those comments. We’re meant to rest after having a baby. We’re meant to have time not working. We’re meant to have eight hours of sleep. And doing these things doesn’t mean you’re lazy, or bad. You’re resting. And if you don’t make it happen for ĒæýóöÃÜÌ ɌɬÃöðûЯÜÜĒ ¯ö ¯ áæá ɌɬÐû ĐÐÜÜ âÃďÃó ϯððÃâȨ Heed my words. Keep your hair. The Child is the Teacher – A Life of Maria Montessori By Cristina De Stefano This authorized biography looks at Maria Montessori’s unpublished diaries and letters. IDVKLRQ Ž W WHEN AND HOW TO BUY YOUR DAUGHTER’S FIRST BRA WORDS BY MELODY LAU As a parent, you often wish time could slow down or freeze altogether, especially when it comes to hoping your children will grow up a little slower. One day you’re celebrating your daughter’s Ķ óöû öûÃðö æó ÏÃó Ķ óöû ¿¯Ē æÌ school and the next, you’re taking her bra shopping. Whether you feel excited, anxious or unsure of what to expect from this new journey, bra shopping with your daughter will be an important parent and daughter experience — strengthening your bond and preparing you both for future adult conversations. Here are some questions that may linger before and after your discussion with your daughter ¯ºæýû ÏÃó Ķ óöû ºó¯Ȩ When should I initiate the conversation with my daughter? Although the average age for ÍÐóÜö ûæ ÍÃû ûÏÃÐó Ķ óöû ºó¯ Ðö ƴƴȣ your daughter may need one at a younger or older age. Around this age range, it’s not strange to bring up a conversation about bras even if you notice her body isn’t experiencing any changes yet. It’s likely her classroom or friends are already discussing bras, but we recommend you keep your conversations light and casual. For example, it’s always great to share your personal experiences, such

It’s important to normalize the conversation and give her the ability to ask any questions without making her feel embarrassed about her body changes. Is there anything I should do to prepare my daughter before our shopping trip? On the day before your shopping trip, your daughter may have some questions or concerns about bra shopping in a public mall. You can ask her if she wants to bring a friend or another family member along to support her on her journey. Robert Land Academy

CANADA’S ONLY 3#.#L EZɖ#4HB#E PRIVATE SCHOOL Uncertainty and change surround the upcoming school year. Not only are parents worried about the health guidelines for their children, but many are also deeply concerned about their child’s academic preparedness for a new grade. COVID protocols, social isolation and online learning have not worked well for many students and increasing numbers of boys have become disengaged from school and lost in video games and u tube videos. Underly-ing issues that may have been present before have now emerged as major obstacles to learning. Robert Land Academy is ¯ âæâðóæĶûȣ ðóÐď¯ûÃȣ áÐÜÐû¯óĒ inspired boarding school for boys established in 1978 and located on 168 acres in rural Niagara. It offers a highly structured living and learning environment for boys in grade 5 through 12 with 30 CITY PARENT | January 2022

24/7 adult supervision focused upon the special needs of boys in furtherance of their academic, physical and per-sonal growth. It is a program designed to redirect behavior rather than merely accommo-date it, paving the way towards the achievement

of positive goals and personal ÌýÜĶÜÜáÃâûȨ With three distinct programs to meet the needs of boys at different stages of age and devel-opment, it offers proven results rather than rhetoric. It boasted a unique safety record

dur-ing the COVID outbreak of no single student case contracted at the school as well as over a decade of recording 100% successful placement of graduate at universities and colleges throughout Canada. With a wide variety of sports and activities coupled with a vigorous academic program, Robert Land Academy offers both safety and accountability. For years it has provided a restreaming program to enable graduates to get back on track with academic level credits through the development of core literacy and numeracy programs. The results of which have been to maximize post-secondary options and opportunities and to record year after year of outstanding results in university placements. Now is the time to act.
