The dos and don’ts of off campus living during a pandemic h, living away from home for the first-time. No parents, roommates, and a pandemic – wait a minute – what? Yeah, we didn’t see that coming, either. This year isn’t an ordinary one, and that means the way that you’re going to be living with your roommates this year is going to look a little different and will require communication and a plan. So, what are the best practices when living in a housing accommodation with others during a pandemic? Here are our suggested do’s and don’ts: DO: Ensure that everyone is on the same page about the importance of socializing only with your household. If this is going to change, it’s important that everyone is made aware. DON’T: Have guests over that don’t live in your household. It’s not worth the drama, trust us. Yes, we know the person you matched with on Tinder is a snack – FaceTime them. DO: Keep a tidy home and make sanitizing and disinfecting part of your daily habits. DON’T: Share a hand towel; germs, even on clean hands, live here. Wet towels act as a breeding ground. Make sure each roommate has their own set. DO: Respect boundaries and the space. With less time at parties and

gatherings, and more time at home, it’s imperative that you’re not encroaching on communal spaces or creating an uncomfortable environment that doesn’t fit everyone. DON’T: Forget to make hand washing regularly part of your new norm. Yeah, singing happy birthday twice is annoying, but so is putting yourself and others needlessly at risk. DO: Use headphones when you’re studying, on a Zoom class call, or working in a communal space. Your roommates don’t need your background noise. DON’T: Forget that there’s a good chance your roommate is on camera. You don’t want to be the star in a TikTok video that goes viral for doing something outlandish. DO: Establish quiet hours. Your roommates are likely to be your best friends for the next few months, and while that means there’s a good chance you’ll get up to shenanigans, that doesn’t mean it’s a party 24/7. Establish hours set out for down time to ensure you’re all getting some rest. MAKE A TO-DO LIST: Keep a list of your deliverables and commitments. Trying to keep it all in your head is a recipe for disaster. Every day, get clear on your “focused five” – the top things you wish to complete that day. Checking things off this smaller list will give you a feeling of accomplishment and momentum. Write these down in a notebook, calendar or planner to keep on track.

USE A CALENDAR: Connect your tasks to the time you wish to spend on them. Time is abstract, so we need ways to help make it more concrete. Seeing time represented visually in a calendar is helpful for everyone. Write key tasks – not just appointments – in your calendar. Let your calendar serve as your roadmap for the day.

SET REMINDERS: When in deep focus, you may find it difficult to pull your attention to a scheduled meeting or phone call. This is the perfect time to set a reminder. A visual, or even better, auditory notification is useful for any commitment you might forget.
