Message from the Principal Welcome to MMRTC! The Mediterranean Maritime Research and Training Centre is a DNV-approved maritime training centre which provides training to maritime pilots and conducts risk assessments and safety studies for local and foreign ports. MMRTC’s courses include Ship and Tug handling simulation training for harbour pilots, tug masters and ships’ officers on twin manoeuvring simulators complete with ARPA and ECDIS systems. MMRTC also provides hands-on training with experienced maritime pilots on various vessels entering Maltese ports. It also provides approved STCW courses which include ECDIS training, ship security training and other ancillary courses. We really believe in professional and continuous training. This is why we have invested heavily not just in training equipment and technology, but also in highly trained and qualified personnel. STCW Basic Safety Training
This course is designed to meet the basic training requirements for all persons intending to go to sea on merchant and fishing vessels and complies with STCW ’95. Prerequisites No prerequisites required. Class Limitations Class size is limited to 12 persons. Trainers The course will be delivered by experienced lecturers at MMRTC. STCW 3.27 Ship Security Awareness
The course provides participants with the knowledge required to enable personnel without designated security duties in connection with a Ship Security Plan (SSP) to enhance ship security in accordance with the requirements of Chapter XI-2 of SOLAS 74 as amended, the ISPS Code, and section A-VI/6-1 of the STCW Code, as amended. STCW 3.19 Ship Security Officer
The course addresses both accident prevention and accident investigation. It is designed to give a deep outlook of the security procedures implemented onboard ships and the ever growing awareness of security threats posed to the shipping industry that are dealt with in having adequately trained crew, including personnel directly involved with the day to day running of a ship in port. This is in compliance with the requirements of A-VI/5 of the STCW code. Prerequisites A minimum of 12 months of sea time Class Limitations Class size is limited to 12 persons. Trainers The course will be delivered by experienced lecturers at MMRTC. Certification MMRTC will issue Transport Malta-approved Certificate on the merit of full attendance and written assessment. Course Structure The aims of the course are to ensure that the delegates will: • Understand the duties of the SSO • Have considered the legal framework for safety • Understand the relationship between the ISM code, Safety Management onboard ship • Have an overview of the ISM code • Have considered the causes of accidents • Understand the process and limitations of risk assessment • Have considered the accident investigation process • Understand the importance of appropriate interviewing technique • Have considered factors influencing the effectiveness of safety committee meetings • Personal Survival Techniques (STCW A-Vl/1-1)
ECDIS STCW 1.27 Generic
Based on IMO Model course 1.27, ECDIS generic course is designed for all nautical officers and other personnel with navigational responsibilities. Candidates attending the course should therefore have experience in performing chart work and should be able to practice all usual tasks concerning standard navigational procedures and equipment. Candidates should have a clear knowledge about the functions and limitations of other navigational equipment. Based on the IMO 1.27 model, we have optimised our course so that it fulfills the basic requirements whilst also covering additional subjects that we consider pertinent to safe ECDIS operation. This is in compliance with the requirements of A-II/1 of the STCW code. Prerequisites ECDIS is about teaching candidates to use ECDIS in order to navigate safely. Therefore, MMRTC require trainees to have basic navigation knowledge and that they understand what a navigation watch entails. Class Limitations Class size is limited to 4 persons. STCW 1.01 Tanker Basic Training – Gas
This course is designed as per the STCW convention and is aimed for unexperienced persons embarking on Gas Tankers At the end of this course, candidates will have the relevant technical knowledge to serve on gas tankers and perform specific duties and responsibilities related to its cargo. This is in compliance with the requirement of A-V/1 of the STCW code. Prerequisites No prerequisites required Class Limitations Class size is limited to 12 persons. STCW 1.02 Specialised Tanker - Oil
The course provides specialist training in subjects appropriate to the duties of senior officers and any person with immediate responsibility for loading, discharging, care in transit or handling of bulk oil cargoes. Apart from nautical Officers, tanker terminal operators will gain more sound knowledge on cargo operations and safety procedures in compliance with the requirement of A-VI-1-2 of the STCW code. Prerequisites Basic Tanker Training (Oil & Chemical) or Minimum of 3 months sea service on a tanker Class Limitations Class size is limited to 12 persons. Security Training for Seafarers with Designated Security Duties
(PDSD)
This course aims to achieve the required standard of competence enabling the participants to contribute to the enhancement of maritime security through heightened awareness and the ability to recognize security threats and to respond appropriately. Those who successfully complete this course should be able to undertake security duties in connection with a Ship Security Plan to enhance ship security in accordance with the requirements of Chapter XI-2 of SOLAS 74 as amended, the ISPS Code and section A-VI/6-2 of the STCW Code. Prerequisites No prerequisites required Class Limitations Class size is limited to 12 persons. Trainers The course will be delivered by experienced lecturers at MMRTC. Course Structure The course aims to demonstrate sufficient knowledge to undertake the duties assigned under the SSP. This knowledge shall include, but is not limited to: knowledge of current security threats and patterns; recognition and detection of weapons, dangerous substances and devices; recognition, on a nondiscriminatory basis, of characteristics and behavioral patterns of persons who are likely to threaten security; techniques used to circumvent security measures; crowd management and control techniques; security related communication; knowledge of emergency procedures and contingency plans; operation of security equipment and systems; testing, calibration and at-sea maintenance of security equipment and systems; inspection, control and monitoring techniques; and methods of physical searches of persons, personal effects, baggage, cargo and ship stores.
