FINDING COMMUNITY Meet Elena Barragan. Growing up, Elena felt like her Hispanic heritage made her stand out for the wrong reasons. Having always enjoyed learning in school, she was placed into honors and advanced classes and consistently noticed something: she was the only Hispanic student in her class. As soon as she started taking classes at CCD, Elena quickly realized that the diversity on campus was unlike anything she had experienced at previous schools. She was in an environment where she could grow and interact with students from different backgrounds and similar goals as her. Elena plans to continue her education in Business Administration at a 4-year college when she leaves CCD. She hopes her journey will encourage others like her to continue their education.

Grants: Federal and/or state student financial aid that doesn’t need to be paid back. Loans: These need to be paid back but can help to cover the cost of your education. Work-Study: This allows you to earn biweekly paychecks as a student employee, which helps cover living and educational expenses. Scholarships: We give out $1,000,000 annually in CCD-specific scholarships. Start your plan at CCD.edu/Financial-Aid.
MAKING A LEADER Meet Emanuel Walker. He and his mother sought refuge in Denver after emigrating from Liberia in 2004. Unable to get the support he needed, Emanuel’s academic and financial struggles followed him from high school to his 4-year college in Oklahoma. Feeling defeated, he returned to Denver after his first year and was introduced to CCD. Since, he has found mentors and taken leadership opportunities, including becoming chairman of the State Student Advisory Council and president of CCD’s chapter of The National Society of Leadership and Success; they have not only made him more confident but have helped him realize his passion for technology and business. Emanuel hopes to one day use his degree in Computer Information Systems to support communities in Liberia.
