With almost ten years of unbelievable success, graduates from MDS go on winning prestigious awards, and are working in some of the top animation companies in the world. Developed in 2000, our Diploma of 3D Computer Animation is New Zealand’s most established and technically robust 3D animation qualification. No other school in the country matches the success of our graduates. Grads from this top qualification often choose to then specialise in game art, up skill into high-end 3D through the MDS Graduate Diploma of Advanced 3D Productions (second year), or move into film and R&D areas. You will learn to channel your creativity using the ‘tools-of-the-trade’ (Maya, Photoshop, After Effects) to produce visually compelling bodies of work grounded in contemporary industry techniques and production processes. Tutors don’t just teach. They mentor and guide you into achieving what you probably never thought possible. Core skills you will develop on the Diploma cover the foundations (and specialisations) of 3D – Modelling, Animation, Texturing, Lighting and Rendering. A significant amount of time is spent in production where you get to utilise these core skills and create high quality material. In doing so it’s possible to ascertain a specialisation that best befits your creativity and skill set. Also covered is a six-week stop motion animation project (introducing the dynamics of a production and post-production environment), and life drawing. Your study time is made up of a mixture of tutor driven high-end tutorials, practical projects and self-directed learning. student work by Rick Xu

Great ideas based on good insight have always been the basis of successfully marketed products and services, but now in the context of a fast changing world – and with the emergence of social media and consumer generated content in the digital space -these great core ideas are more vital than ever before. Media Design School’s Diploma of Creative Advertising is New Zealand’s premiere creative advertising course. Past students and graduates regularly win awards including Axis, NAB, and Crowbar (Singapore). This is an ideas school, based entirely on the incubation and development of great ideas. Its content and the medium through which these ideas are expressed is advertising, but the skills gained are lifelong and transferable across many disciplines. We want to teach you to be flexible and nimble, and to do that we need you to be intensely curious about people, technologies and trends - all of which must translate into a passion and confidence to ‘connect’ with others, from co-creatives right through to the consumer. Our tutors are highly experienced industry professionals who will help you to tap into the creative pool that dwells in your mind by guiding you through a rigorous 40-week program that has been designed to stretch your imagination, stamina, grit and determination to succeed. The course will be very much what you make of it. One of the main assets is its close ties to the ad industry and the involvement with its senior creative people, which means it operates very closely to ‘real world’ standards.

This is a unique, award-winning, and successful qualification with international recognition and acclaim. services and facilities At Media Design School we care about your dreams and are here to support you all the way from creative to industry. We want to make sure that you have all that you need to produce outstanding work and that you are having a great time while you’re here.
Classes & Gear Depending on your qualification, class will run betweenfour and eight hours a day, Monday through Friday. While you are in class you will have your own computer (excluding Creative Advertising) with fully up-to-date, industry-standard software.
After Hours Labs Each of our qualifications requires a considerable amount of self-directed study. To achieve this requirement, we provide fully functioning after-hour computer labs, which hold all the necessary software and licenses. These labs are available for your use from 8am until 9pm daily (5pm Fridays), 10am-4pm on Saturdays and 12pm until 4pm on Sundays.
Student Lounge Our Student Lounge overlooks Queen Street and boasts lots of sunshine and fresh air. You will find it a great place to relax, refuel and rejuvenate for your next spell of creativity.
Mentoring Tutoring Staff at MDS are equipped with a wealth of knowledge in their specific industries and an abundance of passion for passing that knowledge on. Tutors are available to you outside of class time and within business hours for one-to-one mentoring, feedback and career advice.
Student Representatives Each class has an elected Student Representative who attends monthly meetings run by MDS’ Academic Support Manager. Also in attendance are representatives from the Marketing and Technical Support departments. This is a great forum for ideas, feedback, as well as organising events and working together.
Recruitment The Marketing Department at MDS offers a recruitment brokering service between our Industry contacts and our talent. We keep in touch with alumni via email with jobs that come through us and also run CV writing and interview workshops for students prior to graduation.
Blog The MDS blog www.itswhatyoumakeofit.com is a great initiative run by the Marketing Department and to which students and tutors often contribute. It’s What You Make Of It is where you can find information about recent student work, graduate work and achievements, and industry news. 20
Graduation Your time at MDS will culminate in a Graduation ceremony (held bi-annually). This is not only an opportunity for you to receive your Diploma but for the School, your family and your community to congratulate you on your outstanding achievements. Excellence and Industry awards are also presented on the night.
Industry Integration Throughout the year the school will invite guest lecturers to present to your class on various topics related to your chosen industry. Our industry partners will also invite you out for field trips. You will receive live briefs, giving you real-life experience to add to your portfolio. An industry panel will also be involved in the assessment of your final piece of work.
Industry Only Show Twice a year we put on an Industry Only Show, where our industry partners are invited to view student work and meet our graduates. This is a fantastic opportunity for graduating students to display their high-standard work to the decision makers of their industry and to form contacts of their own.
Industry Panel The MDS Industry Panel is an invited group of four-six industry representatives who communicate with the school in reference to industry trends, hardware and software developments and curriculum content. The Panels also view your final portfolio work at the end of each course, providing feedback and in some cases grades for selected criteria students’ are judged on. This feedback is invaluable as it allows you to see just how your work relates to what is going on in the real world.
Alumni MDS turned ten in 2009 and with over 2000 students to have come through our doors and graduated, we are setting up an Alumni-only site. This will be a central place for grads and past staff to get back in touch, post and hear about job opportunities, offer guest lectures and tutorial material, or simply hear about what’s up in the MDS Alumni world.
Reseller MDS is also a reseller of the most current software that you may want to use and it is available to our students at educational prices. You can now buy the different CS4 suites, Autodesk Maya and even Wacom tablets. 21

International Students If you are applying to study from a non-English speaking country you will need to provide results of an English language test such as IELTS or TOEFL. Depending on the qualification being applied for, an academic score in an IELTS or equivalent English language test of 5.5 for diploma qualifications and 6.0 for graduate diploma qualifications is required to study at Media Design School. A transcript of your results (or certified copy) should be included with your application. Visit www.ielts.org for further information.
All photocopied documents (results, transcripts, certificates, etc.) must be certified as true and correct copies. Documents that have not been certified will not be accepted.
Portfolio requirements If you are applying for Graphic Design, Digital Media, 3D Computer Animation, Creative Advertising, Visual Effects & Motion Graphics or the Art stream of Game Development you will need to put forward a portfolio of relevant visual work either in digital or hardcopy format. Your portfolio should include a range of items that may include illustrations, sketches, art, photography, creative writing, digital images, videos etc. The items in your portfolio may have been produced on previous courses or in previous employment, although often the items will be purposely developed for the portfolio in question, in your own personal time.
Please note that test results may be re-confirmed. All photocopied documents (results, records, passports, etc.) must be certified as true and correct. Documents that have not been certified will not be accepted.
If you are applying for Graphic Design, Digital Media or Visual Effects & Motion Graphics and you do not have a current portfolio, you may choose to complete a Media Design School brief (contact us on enquiries@mediadesign. school.nz).

Notification will be given within five working days as to the status of your application.
I’m accepted, what happens next? If your application is successful you will be given an “offer of place”, which will be confirmed when you pay your Registration Fee of $250 (for domestic students) or $500 (for international students). You will then need to pay your full fees (as invoiced).
