MILK Magazine Design

Milk magazine features an all female cast of designers, illustrators and creators within each issue. The design needed to be clean and feminine, but not too whimsical as they do have some male readers. It needed to look well put together to appeal to other designers with a keen eye.

The interior follows a simple four column grid, with the main body text tinted at 80% black to add a bit of softness. Coloured tabs are used to announce the beginning of each new article, and are in colours that correspond to the visuals used. While sans-serif fonts are predominantly used, serif fonts are sometimes used on pull-quotes and informative lock-ups.

PUMA Annual Report

This annual report needed to incorporate Puma’s youthful and innovative style, reflecting Puma’s culture. The main concept was to create something that a person could easily extract information from, while looking young and innovative.

The Puma feel has been created using specific sport photography, the use of splatters (which is a youthful element that compliments the photography, and also resembles previous Puma marketing material), and the use of interesting, saturated colour.

LOGO DESIGNS Various

4

1: Fu Cuisine is a Chinese food company whose logo imitates the author’s stamp on Chinese art and has many lucky cues.

2: With Love is a small craft business that creates and sells handmade baby clothes, gift cards, handbags and more.

3: Devonport Food, Wine and Music Festival logo for this popular annual Auckland event

4: Banshee guitar products are made just for teenaged rockers who are looking to start playing the guitar.

DEVONPORT FOOD, WINE & MUSIC FESTIVAL Logo Development

The Devonport Food, Wine and Music Festival is an annual event held on Auckland’s North Shore. I knew that explicitly including the notions of food, wine and music into this logo would be too messy and may end up feeling a bit disjointed.

It is for this reason that I went with a flourish decoration, using aspects of the grape vine in the flourish. By using a slab serif font I was able to modernize the logo. The colours represent a more contemporary, saturated palette inspired by wine.

MOMOFUKU Recipe Book

The cookbook is to showcase recipes from the famous New York restaurant, Momofuku, and has been written by the restaurants famous chef, David Chang. The book has been designed to express that the information contained is contemporary, features Asian flavours, and can be followed easily.

I used a square page design as a lot of Asian patterns, furniture and food ware feature this shape. Each recipe has the ingredients on the left, and the method on the right. I separated these components with Japanese dots so the eye does not wander across. I used these methods to create hierarchy within the recipe, ensuring easy navigation for the reader.

EMILIANA TORRINI CD Cover Design

Emiliana Torrini is a half-Icelandic, half-Italian musician, singing in the genre of alternative pop music. Her music has been described as “delicate enough to leave you breathless, but so full of emotion that the hairs on the back of your neck tingle”. I wanted to illustrate this description on a CD cover design for a live performance.

I selected images of Torrini that rang true to her music – full of emotion and tales from her sometimes turbulent life. The absence of colour gives a snap-shot look, as this performance is frozen in time, and frozen on this album. The grainy quality of the images helps give a retro, classic feel and imitates the often smoky atmosphere of bar performances.

THE BODY SHOP Tee Shirt/Postcard Design

In a culture where appearance is everything, this Join the Dots design for The Body Shop is aimed at freckled females with a straight-up single-minded proposition: if you can’t fight ‘em, join ‘em. I made the colours soft and feminine and pen-tooled this illustration of an independent (but friendly) young woman.

Using different brushes in Photoshop helped to create this watercoloured look, which complements the soft tones. The text ‘Join the Dots’ is in a cursive, feminine hand-written font.

FU CUISINE Logo/Packaging Design

This packaging for fortune cookies has been designed to predominantly express that the product is a traditional Chinese recipe, but that it is also contemporary and appropriate for the modern New Zealander. ‘Fu’ is the name of the Chinese symbol for good luck, with gold being a lucky colour.

The text ‘Traditional Chinese Biscuits’ is in the font Fugu to create movement and emulate the strokes of a calligraphy brush. Wood is a spiritual material in Chinese culture, and gives a natural, crafted-with-care look.

ABSOLUT VODKA Advertisement Design

Much of Absolut Vodka’s fame is due to its long-running advertising campaign, which my design is an addition to. I chose to run with the tag line of Absolut Envy. The universal colour for envy is green, so I chose the Absolut Pears vodka variety and used green throughout my design.

I used a green, snake skin texture in the background, as snakes are also linked to the theme. Green swirls of light encapsulate the bottle in a cradle of protection.

WITH LOVE Logo/Stationary Design

With Love needed a new identity for their craft business, which creates and sells handmade baby clothes, gift cards, handbags and more. However, they hate the associations with the word ‘crafts’ and wanted to keep to a feminine, clean, shabby chic Cath Kidston inspired look.

The logo consists of two parts — the image of the thumbprint with the heart in its center (to echo the ‘made with love’ theme) and the business name in a handwritten typeface than almost looks like a twisty piece of thread. The business card includes a badge with the logo to wear.

THE SHINS Poster/Advertisement Design

The Shins are an American independent, underground rock band signed to SubPop Records. Their music has commonly been summed up as “fresh, immediate, and quirky with childlike enthusiasm, and I wanted to reflect this description in the gig poster design.

My idea was to create the poster with childlike, crafty look and achieved this by using paper textures, shadows and shapes in Photoshop. The hierarchy within the text means that our eyes are initially drawn to the band name, and then down the document to the tour information

Front

BANSHEE Logo/Packaging Design

The Banshee brand is aimed at teens looking to try their hand on the guitar. The logo incorporates elements of music and tattoos with an alternative feel. The design for their guitar string packaging is very illustrative but in a more mature, modern way.

Back

The typeface used resembles an old, rough typewriter which adds to the slightly grungy attitude of the text. Graphic elements such as the characters, skulls, crosses and posters have been repeated throughout other collateral belonging to the Banshee brand.

BANSHEE ‘Somewhere’ Booklet Design

The Banshee Somewhere guide has been created in order to teach fresh faced rockers the basics of the guitar, but in a nonpatronizing way. The guide features parts of the guitar, a bit of history, as well as some basic songs for the readers to try their hand at. Everybody’s got to start Somewhere.

The typefaces, illustrations and graphic elements are core pieces to the Banshee brand, and have been echoed throughout this guide to create resonance and harmony. All illustrations were created by hand and coloured in Photoshop to give that slightly rough look.
