foreword Ease@Indian Manufacturing Dear Readers, I hope you all have started the journey of 2016 with innovative ideas, productive spirit and with accountability. MART’s mission is to revolutionize the reading habit of a manufacturer/ Engineer in our country. Last year we initiated several interactive sessions and conducted surveys among different users of the manufacturing industry and with their feedback we are redesigning our contents from the very first issue of 2016. Our main story talks about the impact of Mobile and Social Media in the Manufacturing sector, which is still at a very nascent stage, and proper awareness, can bring a lot of marketing and branding opportunities especially to our SMEs. I am sure that the articles featured here will give our readers innovative plans to use the social media and develop a broad customer network in the near future. The year starts with a lot of events specially designed to benchmark Indian manufacturing. Further complimenting Make in India campaign, the West Bengal government and the Andhra Pradesh Government are organizing their investment and business summit during the first half of this month. Andhra Pradesh is expected to offer a lot of facilities to the investors and the Chief Minister, Shri. Chandrababu Naidu proved his industry friendly policy during his last stint as the head of united Andhra. During his last tenure, several infrastructure projects were initiated which helped the state to bring a lot of industries. He is expecting to use his experience this time to ensure AP Invest meet is going to be a huge success! On the other hand Bengal Chief Minister, Ms. Mamata Banerjee is trying to sum up the hard work she had done last year with the Bengal Global Business Summit this year which is expected to receive a greater support from the industry leaders. Another big event to take off is Make in India Week scheduled from 13th to 18th of February at MMRDA Grounds, Bandra-Kurla Complex, Mumbai. An exhibition of most innovative products and manufacturing processes developed in our country is planned at Make in India Centre along with a sector pavilion and states pavilion. Undoubtedly it will take manufacturing to newer levels. Last year we witnessed complex market situations. Like its smaller sister models the machine tool manufacturer has also equipped this latest machine with a new compact MASTER® mill-turn spindle, which with 220 Nm achieves a 120 percent higher torque. With a diameter of 202 mm the length of the compact MASTER® spindle has been reduced by 70 mm so that it now measures only 450 mm. The interplay of the 150-

mm larger X-axis (-25 / +175 mm) and the 20-mm longer Y-travel of ± 210 mm brings an enormous gain in freedom for users. This enables, for example, the radial machining of workpieces with maximum diameters of 700 mm with 170-mm long tools (with the B-axis in a vertical position). With regard to other equipment features, the CTX gamma 3000 TC 2nd Generation is equipped with 36 tool pockets in its standard version. CNC Double Column Plano Milling Machine

The CNC Plano miller, having 6 meters long X axis traverse and 2 meters wide admit between columns, is capable of right angle machining , close pitch drilling operation, deep hole drilling, rigid tapping etc. Positioning accuracy: ±10 microns for 300 mm length, maximum being upto 50 microns over the entire length of 6 meters stroke of X axis. Targeted repeatability: ±10 microns.

Shenoy Engineering Pvt Ltd, the Bangalore based SPM manufacturers, have designed a double column vertical Mill/ Drill Machine which has a table of 6000x1500 mm, stroke of 6230 mm and admit between columns is 2000 mm. Apart from heavy vertical and right angle machining, using Ø250 mm cutter, this machine can perform heavy, close pitch drilling operations, using U drills upto Ø50 mm and rigid tapping upto M 48. In-built high pressure coolant facilitates quick chip evacuation. The heavily ribbed, 12 mtrs long, segmented construction of the bottom base is designed to carry weight of 15 tons. Precision ground LM guides & blocks facilitates rapid traverse upto 5 meters per minute, slow cutting speed is as low as 30 mm per minute. The X axis drive system consists of LM guides and Ø100 mm x 16 mm pitch, C3 class ground, preloaded ball screw and ball

nut. The X axis traverse is through a combination of 47 Nm servo motor and a 3 arc minute backlash planetary gear box. The feedback for X axis slide is through a rotary encoder, mounted on X axis ball screw end. Pre-tensing of ball screws for arresting the float, innovative anti-sagging mechanism, metallic telescopic guideway covers etc are the other feature. Targeted positioning accuracy is ±10 microns for 300 mm length, maximum being upto 50 microns over the entire length of 6 meters stroke of X axis. Targeted repeatability is ±10 microns. Cross (Y) axis, having 1,800 mm stroke, is bridge type construction and is resting on 2 columns. The axis feed rate is from 30 mm to 5000 mm through 36 Nm motor in combination with ground LM guides and blocks. The feedback is through linear scale.

Mounted on the Y axis is the ram type milling head – ram having 1000 mm stroke, sliding through combination of male, case hardened guideway strips and female turcite lining. The main, BT-50 spindle is powered by 18 KW spindle motor and has rotary encoder feedback system. The vertical feed of the ram is through 48 Nm servo motor with brake, in combination with timer belt-pulley & Ø 63 mm ball screw-box nut arrangement. The spindle can accommodating Ø250 mm cutter and is capable of speed upto 2500 RPM. Automatic arbor clamping & de-clamping is through Belleville spring stacks & hydraulic cylinder. The feedback system is through linear scale and counter balancing is through hydraulics. CNC controller is SiemensSinumerik 828D and the servo motors are Sinamic IFK7. Spindle servo motor is IPM8 series and the drive for spindle & axes is S120 series.

The machine is aesthetically designed and is having sliding door and modular type guard of an average height of 2 meters from the ground. The guard will also have transparent acrylic sheet for ease of viewing the machine and job. NORD DRIVESYSTEMS expands its latest series of slim twostage helical bevel gearboxes, adding a new smaller unit for output torques up to 50 Nm. Highly efficient helical bevel type units therefore now complement the lineup of worm gearboxes that is already available for small loads. Thanks to superior manufacturing quality standards, the gear units are highly resilient and withstand large forces on the output shaft. The short-term overload tolerance is 275%, which leaves enough time for the motor protection to kick in. Mechanical blockages usually do not cause damage, but the drive can start right up again

without service interruption. The new units are available for gear ratios from 3.58 to 61.88. They add a new size to the existing series that now comprises six sizes with output torques up to 660 Nm. NORD supplies the two-stage helical bevel gearboxes with hollow and solid shafts, single or double shafts, for foot or flange mounting, and in open or enclosed designs. All versions feature a very high power density, ensuring robust reliability and easy handling. By default, the gearboxes support reverse operation. 1957, a ship from Scandinavia carrying foreign timber for a cooling tower at Fertilizer Corporation of India, Sindri, caught fire, destroying its cargo. Mr. Swarup, who had by then become renowned as a timber expert in the country was asked to supply an equivalent quality of Indian wood to make up for this loss. After carrying

out a series of accelerated tests on several Indian timber species, a suitable wood was supplied to FCI. However this exposition gave the opportunity to Mr. Swarup to enter into the new prospective business of cooling towers. Initially, he established contact with Marley Cooling Tower company of the US and sought technological assistance

from it. In 1959, the company supplied its first cooling tower plant to Rourkela Steel plant. to all manufacturing units in India and around 40% of the current market size of the Indian machine tool industry. Industry reports have stated that nearly 80% of the SMEs are not IT and automation enabled. The operations are largely manual, using low-end solutions that are difficult to maintain. It is essential for SMEs to adopt automation. Indian SMEs need to be made aware of the payback results (return on investment), simplicity in operation, design, flexibility and maintenance. IMTMA will organize a Seminar on Automation in February this year which would address the needs of the industry as well as strengthen Indian SMEs. IMTMA will also organize a regional machine tool expo in Pune to make available the latest technology and innovations for SMEs in Tier II and Tier III cities of India. Regional council meets organized by IMTMA give opportunities for SMEs to undertake plant visits and witness the best practices followed by established industries.

Celebrating 120 Years of the Power Tool A Global Success Story of German Engineering

Every industry has drilling needs and finding an electric drill is inevitable. They are also indispensable in home needs and manual trades, in addition to being one of the most popular tools in use today, they are also the oldest. The electrically-driven drill was invented and developed by FEIN employees in Stuttgart in 1895, making it the first power tool in the world. FEIN’s new invention grew into a wide range of drills, including magnetic core drills. To mark the 120th anniversary of this indispensable tool, FEIN is telling the story of the electric drill.

Archaeological evidence has revealed that boring holes was one of the very earliest human activities. The simple hand drill was quickly improved with the use of a mechanical drive. For a long time, however, manual drills dominated until the development of small, reliable electric motors. By the late 19th century the technology had progressed significantly, and in 1895 a key turning point took place. Friedrich Heep and Jakob Wahl, two young mechanics at FEIN in Stuttgart, were looking for a faster way to drill hundreds of holes in steel. They took one of the new small electric motors, fitted a drill chuck to the spindle – and set to work. Without the engineering knowledge and business acumen of their employer Emil Fein, their invention would probably never had progressed further than a clever idea used within the company. Wilhelm Emil Fein, the son of the company’s founder, recognised the potential of the improvised electric drill. Working in partnership with Otto von Kellenbach, he developed the tool to the point where it

could be marketed. The two had developed the world’s first power tool. It was a key moment in the history of the company. In 1908 the workshop for the production of physical and electrical apparatus began specialising in the development of electric tools. Over 7 kilograms in weight and 50 watts of power: the first FEIN drill conquered the market. The world’s first electric hand drill was powered by 110 volts of direct current. It achieved 1200 rpm and had a power output of 50 W. It was able to drill around 4 mm into steel. However, the tool’s handling and shape were very different from today’s models. It weighed 7.5 kilograms and had to be held with both hands. A breastplate allowed the operator to lean his full weight on the machine to drive the drill into the material. The first electric drill was soon imitated by other well-known companies. In spite of strong competition, FEIN emerged as the innovation leader, continually improving its invention. For example, FEIN was

one of the first manufacturers to launch a drill with a lightweight metal housing. In 1901 the first drill with mechanical gear reduction appeared on the market. The reduced speed made it possible to drill larger holes in steel. FEIN unveiled the first multi-speed drill in 1903. The FEIN GMAS could drill holes with a diameter of up to 5 mm. The first angle drill was launched in 1908, again developed by FEIN. The motors were also continually improved, for example, to allow them to withstand overload. What’s more, FEIN focused on safety from a very early stage. The first model to feature an emergency stop switch (the FEIN N72) was launched as early as 1910. The distinctive orange of FEIN power tools was chosen by FEIN’s product development team in the 1920s, again for safety reasons. The aim was to develop tools that delivered more power but were smaller, lighter and easier to handle. Ergonomics, therefore, played an important role in the evolution of drill design. Designers experimented with different shapes of handles and housings,

with the available motor technology also influencing the size and construction of the drill. In around 1920 there were four basic types: the pistol shape, the spade shape, which had been developed by FEIN in 1919, the cross handle and the rod shape. The pistol grip from another manufacturer is still the most popular type today. FEIN achieved another significant weight reduction in 1933 when it became the first manufacturer to develop a motor housing made of insulating material. Another major advancement was the development of infinitely variable electronic speed control. In the late 1960s, FEIN launched the first drill with full wave electronics. Electronic control was gradually adopted in all drills. The increased development of this technology not only made drills more versatile and user-friendly, but also considerably reduced the unit costs (and still does today). The models in the BOP range are the most recent successors of the very first electric hand drill. One factor that was crucial to the success

of the power drill in the DIY sector was the development and refinement of storage battery technology. Initially, cordless drills represented a compromise in that they offered the flexibility of not being tied to a power socket, but less power. Over the last 30 years cordless drills have become established alongside mains-powered tools in professional applications too. The further enhancement of battery technology means that today, one in every two power tools shipped is a cordless model. The history of the electric hand drill is closely linked to the Industrial Revolution and the growing need to be able to process hard materials such as steel, rock, concrete and masonry efficiently. When it came to thick, solid or brittle materials, even the new electric drills were sometimes unsuitable for the job, which resulted in the rapid development of specialised drilling tools. In terms of power tools, these included hammer

drills, impact drills and core drills. Hammer drills and impact drills work on the same principle: the rotational movement of the drill is combined with movement along its axis. The key difference lies in the construction of the bit. In an impact drill the bit also moves in the direction of the axis, but in a hammer drill it does not. The bit on an impact drill is driven rhythmically into the material by a pneumatic striking mechanism, independent of the drill chuck. With a hammer drill, the bit vibrates. This means the impact drill has a much lower striking frequency but each impact has more force. Impact drills are mostly used to drill larger holes in very solid rock and concrete, while hammer drills are used for materials where an ordinary drill is unsuitable (such as concrete, reinforcements or natural stone). The striking mechanism can also be switched off if necessary. The first hammer drills were developed by FEIN in 1910 and the first impact drill in

1914. The impact drill achieved commercial success – thanks in part to its use outside of mining and heavy industry. For a long time, this name was synonymous with impact drills. Compact handguided hammer drills did not go into series production until 1952. Drilling accurate holes with a diameter of 14 mm or more in very hard and tough material is difficult, even for powerful drills. The solution is core drilling, in which a drill bit ‘cuts’ a circle into the material and the core falls out, leaving behind a precisioncut hole with minimal burrs. Unlike the electric drill, hammer drill and impact drill, core drilling has so far remained limited to professional use in industry and manual trades. This is due to the applications they are used for and the size and handling of the tools. Because of the high torques involved in core drilling, the tools need to be supported on a secure base. For tools specifically designed for drilling metal, the drill jig is secured by

an electromagnet. FEIN is the pioneer of this technique. As early as 1908 the company was producing heavy drills fixed by an electromagnet. As with hand-guided drills, the trend in core drills for metal is towards ever more safe, convenient and ergonomic tools. This can be seen in the FEIN KBM 32 Q and the FEIN KBM 80 auto, for example. In 2000 the FEIN KBM 32 Q was the first core drilling unit to weigh less than 10 kg. Its compact design and low power to weight ratio make it the ideal tool for assembly work. It was now possible to use a core drill on the work site itself. Improvements and innovations in handling are making the use of core drills safer and more user-friendly. Once again, FEIN is among the pioneers: the KBM 80 auto is the first core drill with fully automatic, digitally controlled drill feed, eliminating the need for manual intervention in the

The KBH 25 signalled another breakthrough in drilling technology: the world’s first hand-guided core drilling system for metal combines the advantages of a powerful hand drill with the benefits of a carbide drilling tool. Drills are used in a wide range of situations, from DIY to machine and plant construction. Therefore, the most important consideration when buying a drill is that the power rating of the drill should be matched to the application. 1. Power: High figures for the rated power consumption are not especially meaningful. The important data are the power output and speed under load. The bit and speed should be selected according to the material. 2. Robustness: Electric drills are subjected to high mechanical loads, so the workmanship of a tool is an important quality factor. A professional machine must be able to handle impact, dirt and being dropped. This demands an excellent standard of workmanship, for example, a barrel-type housing with shielded motor and metal gearbox head. 3. Ergonomics/Handling: The tool must sit comfortably in the hand even after prolonged use. This demands an ergonomically

designed handle and balanced weight. All controls must be easily accessible. The tool should also vibrate as little as possible. 4. Quality of results: In professional drilling, the precision of the drilled hole is the key criterion. The most important prerequisite for this is high concentricity. This is achieved through the precise construction and workmanship of the drill chuck, spindle and motor – which comes at a price. At Imtex 2016, FEIN will be launching the new economical magnetic metal core drilling machines that are durable and are suitable for twist drilling applications as well. Modern metal-forming equipment, such as transfer presses and progressive presses for large parts, which have mechanized components inside, demand more intelligent tool concepts that guarantee greater process reliability and efficiency. And that is not all: parts should only be allowed to tip over under certain, limited circumstances and the tool design must take account of the complex and inconvenient contours associated with mechanization, particularly in the shapes of slides and drivers. These stringent criteria have led to the development of new machine tool engineering and design methods. Only the hydraulic system is depressurized in the at-rest state. In contrast, the accumulator,

which is filled with nitrogen, has an initial pressure p = 170 bar, although this does not act on the hydraulic system when at rest. During the up stroke, the crown of the press acts on the driving cylinder (master). The volumetric oil flow generated by entry of the plunger into the master cylinder actuates and extends the working cylinder (slave), against the restoring force generated by the prepressurized gas inside. At the end of the working stroke, the excess oil is forced through the open compression space and into the gas-filled accumulator. The piston compresses the gas in the accumulator according to the volume of excess oil. The accumulator acts as an autonomous gas spring. The

master cylinder and the slave cylinder connected. To it are reset when the tool is opened by means of an integral gas spring. This system may be used in the crown of the press, i.e. with the installation position turned through 180°, with no further adaptation. The system in the master/ slave cylinder is characterized by simple and intelligent combination of the different properties of oil and gas(non-compressible / compressible). The master/slave system is used to implement an autonomous hydraulic system which is based on proven gas spring components and can thus be intelligently

If the employees were lucky, they walked away with raises, often tied to a ranking on some sort of rigid numerical scale. But today, with the widespread emphasis on teamwork, shared leadership, and an on-going struggle to find and retain qualified employees,

Step Two: Assessment A manager’s critical responsibility is assessing and giving timely feedback to teammembers on their performance. There are many benefits to doing this. Feedback on performance that is given as soon as possible has proven to be the most effective. It’s not fair or effective to tell someone how he is not doing well or did well weeks after the job is done. Let people know quickly so they can either address the error or replicate the success. Continuous assessment and feedback is the key to ensuring that there are no surprises, which of course

Take a look again at the objectives that you and the employee agreed to and documented at the beginning of the year. Look for any recommendations or letters you may have received from clients and peers during the year. It’s another great technique for reducing or eliminating surprises. Step Four: Appropriate setting Make sure that you have an appropriate setting in which to deliver the appraisal. The most commonly used location, a manager’s office, is often the worst place. It’s not neutral territory and no matter how much rapport-building you do or how long you’ve worked with the employee, it’s still “your turf.” A conference room is often best, but if that’s not available, find some other meeting room. Step Five: Deliver it clearly

Deliver the appraisal in simple language. Don’t use code or jargons, and don’t mince words. Don’t beat around the bush even if the appraisal is not as positive as the employee might have hoped. Step Six: Encouragement At the conclusion of the performance appraisal meeting, which also marks the end of one performance appraisal cycle and the beginning of the next, your job is to encourage. You want to motivate the employee to continue doing that which he does well and to improve in the areas where there is room for growth. This is the best way to make these meetings productive and positive. Even if the person’s appraisal has not been as high as he might have hoped, remind the employee that he is still valued and that you’ll support him in his development. done best in complex areas such as innovation and business sophistication while faring poorly in the more basic and more fundamental drivers of competitiveness such as health and primary education, higher education and training, technological readiness and labour market efficiencies

among others. The central government has already started work in order to make country further competitive. The Make in India initiative is a step towards increasing the manufacturing base in country so as to take advantage of India’s cheap labour. Another government initiative Skill India aims to provide essential employment skills to help India’s young and vibrant workforce and in turn raise the productivity. This will not only improve competitiveness but will also help to move the country up the value chain so as to ensure more solid and stable growth. The government needs to work on easing the prevailing labour market rigidities which obstruct the growth of labour-intensive industries. The archaic labour laws do not provide any flexibility to praise or reprimand the employees and are a hindrance to the growth of employment. “Make in India” in the manufacturing level: The government’s “Make in India” initiative aims to increase the share of manufacturing to 25% of GDP by 2022 from the current 12%. This is expected to result in the creation of 100 million jobs and drive social upliftment of unemployed youths. However, with no clarity on when GST will be implemented, one cannot expect large manufacturing investments to flow into India. There are still too many hindrances to conduct business in India.

With a virtual stagnation from 2010 to 2014, manufacturing in India continues to be crippled by issues such as shortage of coal, inability to acquire land and tax disputes. While the provisions under the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, 2013 are expected to drastically decrease time and cost to acquire land, it is necessary to rationalize the act and set up land banks that would assist projects involving acquisition of large land parcels. When developed countries like the United States are renewing focus on reviving manufacturing, “Make in India” is not just an initiative but a national imperative that is needed to keep pace with global growth. Transforming this vision to reality requires a concrete roadmap that will support not just the manufacturing of today, but also of the future. To ensure the country’s place as a global manufacturing powerhouse, the government, industry and civil society must work together to restore investor and public confidence in “Make in India”. Skill Development & Indian SMEs: 19 million students are enrolled in high schools and 10 million students in pre-graduate degree courses across India annually while 2.1 million graduates and 0.3 million postgraduates pass out of India’s non-engineering colleges every year. According to a recent UN report India has the youngest

population in the world with over 365 million people between 10-24 years. But despite the large pool of talent that is passing out every year, only 30% are employable; and the numbers are even worse in some sectors. The paradox of skill development is such that we are in a situation where students do not find enough jobs, and employers do not find enough employees. In order to fix the situation, we need to overhaul our education policies such that they, in addition to providing technical education, should also help the students to gain employability skills which help the students to become more productive and skilled. In this regard, companies should come forward and start their own initiatives towards skill development. For an instance we at TEMA have started “Learn While Earning” initiative to encourage students to undergo one year in-plant training to hone skills specific to the industry of choice and function. Start-ups & Indian Youth: According to the recent reports published by The Economic Times the current placement season at country’s premier engineering collages have seen new surge in hiring from the startups. Several IITs such as Delhi, Varanasi, Bombay, Kanpur, Guwahati and Roorkee, have reported 100% increase in the number of startups coming to recruit. In my opinion, graduates are not hesitant to join new startup companies as they offer good profiles and an equivalent pay

package. However, recent hire and fire type strategies employed by some start ups may make job seeking youths to pursue for relatively stable MNC jobs. Foreign Investments vs. Indian entrepreneurs: I believe that in the long run encouraging and sustaining Indian entrepreneurs is a more pragmatic strategy. But currently we need investment and technology support and hence inviting foreign firms to invest in India makes sense. The encouragement of Indian entrepreneurs should be a parallel activity. This is a prerequisite to guarantee smooth processing during manufacturing of frames and castings, given our high degree of automation.“ The combination of pullout protection and highest concentricity of the Safe-Lock™ system leads to low vibration and as a result, a very stable machining process. Due to the increased cutting depths and feeds, the metal removal rate can be increased significantly. And thanks to the improved runout accuracy of HAIMER shrink fit chucks, tool life is improved by up to 50%. The benefits of less than 3 µm runout, that the symmetrical Safe-Lock™ design provides, coupled with optimum balance and the possibility for easy length presetting were substantial reasons for MTU to switch to the HAIMER system instead of continuing to use Whistle Notch or Weldon tooling systems. While these other systems do in fact prevent tool pull out, both are unsymmetrical by design, hence providing insufficient runout and balance accuracy.

Through the use of a set screw the cutting tool is wedged against the opposite wall of the clamping bore. The holder pushes the cutting tool off center and thereby leads to excessive amounts of runout. Any such design also allows for significant radial play between the tool shank and the bore itself. That way the aforementioned holders actually push the cutting tool off center, thereby inducing excessive amounts of runout. As a result, the tools with a Weldon flat had to be exchanged early. It’s not a Cable, It’s an Antenna! Why would someone want a cable that acts like an antenna? After all, much research and development has gone into improving cable shields precisely to prevent this! As it turns out, there are several conditions in industrial communication systems where using a radiating cable as an antenna offers major benefits. The most common cases are for communicating to equipment moving along a track, replacing slip rings in rotating equipment, and providing a clear radio frequency (RF) signal where obstructions or plant-floor layout prevent a clear “Line-of-Sight” to transmit from a traditional antenna. What is a Radiating Cable? A radiating cable is a long, flexible antenna with slots to radiate RF signals that can be installed around corners, along monorail systems and through tunnels to propagate wireless data signals in situations that are tough or impossible for traditional antennas. Since the radiating cable antenna can be mounted within inches of where the signal needs to be received, it isolates the wireless signal from going to other machines that may be on the plant floor. And, the cable comes in multiple lengths to meet the needs of most applications.

In a typical coaxial cable, a metallic shield wrapped around the cable isolates the signals transmitted on the cable from the electromagnetic waves in the air around the cable. This helps to maintain a strong signal on the cable, and prevents that signal from creating interference with RF equipment nearby. Without the shield, the cable would act like an antenna, transmitting the signal it carries into the air, and receiving radio waves from other RF devices. For those who remember analog cable TV, we experienced this phenomenon when we saw “ghost” images on certain channels. Instead

of just receiving the video signal sent from the cable company along the coaxial cable, we were also receiving that channel’s over-theair broadcast of the same video signal as picked up by the coaxial cable working like an antenna. This was an unintentional use of radiating cable, and produced undesirable results. The same principle that gave us blurry television pictures back then is used to make a cable that intentionally radiates signals. This is called a radiating cable, or leaky feeder cable. The difference between radiating cable and poorly shielded TV cables is that the shield on a radiating

cable is designed with exacting slots that allow for the transmission of signals at a specific frequency. In this way, these cables are tuned to the RF equipment to which they are connected. The cable’s shield still works to block unwanted RF, but will allow signals of the correct frequency to emit from, and be received by the cable inside. That makes a radiating cable act just like an antenna. Placing RF Signals Precisely in Crowded Plants Another benefit of using radiating cables comes from the ability to place RF power very precisely. The use of wireless communication

equipment in factories is growing rapidly, which means that factory floors are becoming crowded with radio waves on all the common frequencies. For machine builders who need to use wireless, this creates a real problem. With a radiating cable solution, new machines can co-exist within the crowded plant RF space without adding to the cacophony. This is because radiating cable emits RF in one direction, and only needs as much power as it takes to link with another antenna at a relatively fixed distance. While the plant’s general wi-fi network is screaming to everyone who will listen, the equipment on the new machine can operate at a whisper. This benefit is especially important in rotating machinery which traditionally used slip rings to conduct communication signals from I/O on the moving part of the machine to a controller on the fixed part. Slip rings are expensive to install, require regular maintenance, and even still suffer from poor communication speeds due to noise on the rings and in the pick-ups that ride on the rings. Traditional wireless solutions can work, but often the motion of the machine will obstruct the wireless link, requiring higher gain antennas that result in greater RF “noise pollution.” Radiating cable is used in these applications to provide a clear, consistent path to the rotating antenna, without interfering with other nearby wireless systems. Flexibility Radiating cable also benefits from its inherent flexibility. Since it is a cable, it can follow almost any path to provide wireless signal in places where antennas just can reach. One of the early applications for radiating cable was to enable two-way radio

connectivity for emergency workers inside highway and rail tunnels. In the industrial setting, there are many hardto-reach places, whether those are actual tunnels or “RF tunnels” created by obstructions. An example of that would be a warehouse, where the metal racks and merchandise on those racks can cause obstruction and reflection issues for a traditional antenna. Radiating cable can be installed along the aisle ways to provide a strong signal just where it’s needed. Summary For certain industrial communication challenges, radiating cable offers unique advantages. Radiating cable provides consistent data rates over a long distance, can be shaped to provide signal in difficult-to-reach environments, and reduces plant RF congestion by constraining its RF signal to the exact area where it’s needed. These benefits are especially valuable in applications where machines move along a pre-defined path, where the terrain of a facility is particularly difficult to reach with broad coverage, and where signals on rotating equipment are otherwise transmitted through slip rings. Care must be taken in selecting and installing the components of a radiating cable solution. However, with a bit of preparation and advice from an experienced industrial RF vendor, a radiating cable system can provide troublefree communications for your toughest applications.

During the design process for the MLS203 X-Y fast scanning stage, Thorlabs again used in-house testing to evaluate encoder performance. When choosing an appropriate position feedback system to be deployed within the MLS203, a potential concern was the risk of sample spillage and the effect this would have upon position control. The dirt immunity performance of a number of competing encoder products was evaluated by the application of isopropyl alcohol (IPA), as a liquid contaminant, and common salt, in place of debris, to the encoder scales. Testing showed that Renishaw’s TONiC encoder system outperformed competing encoder products. This qualitative result allowed Thorlabs to determine that the

Safe retraction without loops: a new energy supply system from igus Retraction system for e-chains on industrial robots enables guiding of supply hoses for rivets and screws The motion plastics specialist igus has developed a lightweight and cost-effective concept for the automatic retraction of energy chains allowing further advances in robotics. Besides carrying energy, data and media cables, industrial robots nowadays also frequently carry supply hosesfor rivets or screws. The new triflex RSE system prevents looping of the energy chain, allowing these materials to be safely supplied to the end of the robot arm. The triflex R series has been designed by igus specifically for highly dynamic industrial robotic applications and as a multi-axis energy chain it can move in all directions in space. The universal triflex chains made from high-performance plastics work in even the most demanding industrial environments, are easy to install and can quickly be filled with cables from the outside. They also have high tensile and torsion strength. “However,

since nowadays it is not only just electrical and pneumatic cables that are conducted on the robot, but also often supply hoses for bolts, rivets or screws, tight bends or hanging loops can sometimes cause problems,” says Jörg Ottersbach, industry manager for robotics at igus. “Any reduction in the minimum allowable bend radius of the supply hoses can lead to a fault, reducing the efficiency of the process. - In the worst case a rivet or a screw gets stuck in the supply hose, which then leads to a plant standstill.” With its linear retraction of the e-chain, the triflex RSE retraction system offers an efficient and cost-effective solution that requires no curve, spring rods or deflecting rollers. Sleek design with direct control on the robot The extremely light system is based on the proven lubrication and maintenance

CSR Ideation workshop by Rotary Club With an objective of collaborative and participative approach with the corporate sector, Rotary Bangalore Whitefield Central (RBWC) organised a CSR Ideation Workshop on 12th December 2015 at Hotel Premier Inn, Whitefield, Bangalore. This was aimed at generating ideas for implementation of CSR activities, accomplish a balance between the actual needs of the society and the ‘act of giving’ from Rotary. The concept of an Ideation Workshop was first conceived in June 2015, when Rtn. Manoj Kabre, Chairman – CSR Committee for RBWC, discussed this with two CSR experts from corporates – Ms.Sheela Kedarinath from PwC and Mr.Deepak Prabhu from Cognizant. The objective was to make a first hand assessment of the “pain points” from the experts who are working in the field of CSR as a profession. CSR is an emotional act and needs internal creativity and inspiration – it is not something mechanical. Upon an initial discussion, it was realized that this subject calls for a collective brainstorming. This is where a need of a structured preparation and planning came in. A structured plan

was made and executed with regular follow-up. Under the leadership of RBWC President Rtn.R G Bhat, a core committee was formed at the Club which took leadership in organising this event. The format of the event was finalized to be in the form of an Ideation workshop wherein facilitate a collaborative brainstorming. There were six subjects identified for Ideation - Health and Hygiene, Environment & Ecology, Water & Sanitation, Literacy, Skill Development and Inclusivity - Differently abled. An online registration link for the event was uploaded at the website of RBWC www.rotarybwc.org. CSR representatives from various corporates were identified and registered for the event in advance. The format of the workshop called for a subject matter expert for each of the six subjects identified for the CSR workshop, to accompany a group of 3 CSR representatives. This enabled the group to do the right brainstorming and come up with an action plan document based on the guidelines given by the Rotary CSR team.

There were a total of 18 CSR representatives and 5 subject matter experts who participated in the Ideation workshop that was conducted for 45 minutes. The entire group was divided into 6 teams and each team was allowed to brainstorm for this time period to accomplish Ideation. This was followed by a presentation as per preconceived format by the leader of each group that was attended by about 60 members including the visitors from various corporates and Rotary members. Abhishek Ranjan and Rtn.Kishor Jagirdar attended the event, and expressed satisfaction and appreciation to the organisers and the Club. Subsequent to this Ideation workshop, RBWC will now plan for Implementation of all the action points that have been identified as a result of this workshop. This will need a partnership of corporates in a participative and collaborative manner, so as to address the needs identified by the group.

Nuberg commissions 3 EPC plants in one quarter across multiple international locations Nuberg Engineering, India based global EPC company announced its crowning achievement of successful commissioning of 3 major industrial chemical plants in last quarter. The company posted another quarter of very strong growth in the EPC (engineering, procurement & construction) industry by commissioning 3 plants in Abu Dhabi, Algeria and Ethiopia, respectively. THE LAST LEAF Dear Readers, Even as expectations changed in India, and as political problems became more salient for the Modi government, the Indian economy chugged ahead to become the world’s fastest-growing major economy, growing at 7.4% in the third quarter of 2015, overtaking China. It also became the world’s top foreign direct investment destination, according to the Financial Times, as announced FDI commitments to India surged to $31 billion in the first half of 2015. Those figures more than double India’s FDI levels from the first half of 2014. In fact, as per the recent statement of our Minister of State for Finance, if we grow at 7 per cent, we will double our economy in a decade. We are going to go from USD 2 trillion economy to USD 4 trillion economy, if the rupee strengthens, to may be USD 5 trillion economy. OK Play India, the plastic auto components maker, today announced its foray into the e-rickshaw segment, with the launch of its the E-Raaja priced at Rs 1.15-1.25 lakh (inclusive of taxes, Delhi). The company plans to produce the e-rickshaws from its two manufacturing units - one in Sohna (Haryana) to cater to the North Indian market and the second one in Ranipet ( Tamil Nadu) to cater to South India. It is making an initial investment of Rs 40 crore. There is a unique, life-changing socio-commercial project that has been put together by M&M in collaboration with the Minda Group, one of its key suppliers. During one of his round at his plant in Dresden in Germany, when Ashok Minda, chairman of the auto component major, realised that sub-assemblies were being transformed into full assembly units by the inmates of a particular jail. Some months later, at a dinner with Hemant Sikka, chief purchase officer, M&M, a similar idea was mooted. This is today slowly transforming the lives of some 30-odd inmates of Yerwada Jail in Pune. Mr.Hiromichi Fujimoto, founded ActiveLink 12 years ago, the physical fulfillment of a childhood dream. Before then, he had worked as an engineer for decades for Panasonic, to whom he proposed his exoskeleton idea. Exoskeletons are devices (attachments) that look like backpacks and act like weight belts, alleviating all stress from the waist and hips when lifting heavy objects. They’re designed to lessen the burden, not make you stronger — sort of like a technological steroid — and they seem perfect for factories. For instance, there’s a power arm prototype loaded with three motors and a sensor that can measure your magnitude and force. It can lift 65 pounds with just a thumb and one or two fingers. There is another one that is called the Power Effector, whose arms extend close to seven feet and can lift more than 650 pounds, and its height allows it to move over piles. The company plans to roll these products out in Japan, where you can rent one for as little as $420 per month, before any overseas expansion. ActiveLink, which was provided with the capital by Panasonic, has been profitable for the last six years, thanks to selling power-assist technology for research purposes, and for a series of R&D contract work.
