Interview with Dr CK Cheung a passionate media educator

Dr Chi Kim Cheung

Dr CK Cheung is a passionate media educator. We had the opportunity to sit down and have a short interview with him. Nice to have you here Dr. Cheung. Is this the first time you are visiting Sweden? Yes definitely! What do you think about Karlstad? The city is very beautiful, but I don’t have had any opportunity to walk around cause the conference is so good I have to be here the most of the day. Why did you start to work with media? Well, because I think It’s very important,

like media is influencing people a lot so, as an educator working for the University in Hong Kong, I think that’s very important for me to train teachers to know what is going on in order to bring out the awareness of the possible influence of media on students. For how long have you worked with media? I started with a course 1996, so 15 year for now. What do you think about future media? It’s is very important because we know that technology advances a lot and the impact of media is getting higher and higher, therefor it’s very important for us to have media literacy and media educa-

tion right at the very early beginning. What’s the biggest difference between the generation today and the generation before in use of media? A lot! Like the generation before it’s kind of passive reception, you give me and then I will receive it. Okey? The generations today, because of the 2.0 it becomes kind of active participatiation like you can go to web and then not only to receive information but you also give out information, and then you can share the information not only between us, it can be spread al over the world. We can se the impactness became very very large, therefor I would say that media education will become more and more important. What do you love the most about you’re job? Well the flexibility the freedom and of course and always to help and influence people because the technology influence people it is very important for me as an educator to help the young people. It was really an honor to meet Dr. C.K Cheung for the great man he is and the fascinating passion for his work.

Prof. Andreoletti held a playful seminar ”Video gaming is a serious business, not a waste of time” Prof. Massimilano Andreoletti held a very playful seminar about video gaming on Wednesday morning. The participants was invited to play a game of ”Crayon Physics” which involved everyone in the problem solving. Some of the participants was invited to the stage and should play the game while the other should observe the players. But most got involved in the problem solving

and had difficulties observing the players. Prof Andreoletti used this as an example on how video gaming can be used to educate. Prof Andreoletti also gave a background on the video gaming industry and did a comparison with modern rock stars, where many games outperform the artists in numbers of sold copies. So, for Prof Andreoletti the ”video gaming is a serious business, not a vaste of time”

A Tool for every task: Social Media and Networking The founding director of the organization Media Snackers believes that when using media “you have to make a mess to find how you can go forward.” It is this theory that dictates how people worldwide use social media and social networking. DK told Summit delegates that social media includes a lot more than Facebook; it also includes all communication and connected internet applications. DK showed a huge range of these programs

in this very interesting session including: bubbl.us, Blogger, animoto, issuu, capzles and ustream. According to DK, these are only a scratch on the surface of social media tools. DK explained that social media and networking have opened many new and exciting opportunities in the 21st century; Companies like IKEA and Ford are are embracing this media change and using networking websites to communicate with consumers and give them the chance to enquire about their brands at the source. Learning to use and understand these

applications is just a matter of playing according to DK; this means trying new things and experimenting with more extensive knowledge about technology. To conclude the session DK left participants with a thought provoking quote: “If you only have a hammer and no other tools, you see every challenge as a nail. To improve the future of social media, more ‘tools’, or technology must be given to those worldwide who are only able to use one tool or form of technology.” It is in this scenario that each and every child should have the opportunity to use and carry a tool shed for any challenge.
